Chapter 63: Oaths and Secrets
With much on her mind, Hermione was taken by surprise when a wand was suddenly jabbed into her neck and she was pushed into the wall. Hermione looked up into the dark eyes of her former potions professor, Severus Snape.
"What are you up to Hermione?" His deep baritone voice spoke quietly as his lips pressed against her ears. His hot breath sent chills down her spine, as his wand was still held tightly against her. "I saw you out in the gardens using Thanatos. Whom were you sending a message to?" His clipped words had the power to make her shiver. Someone had seen her sending LiIy's message. Thank the Gods it hadn't been Tom or Lucius.
"Do you think the Dark Lord would also be interested in whom you are sending your little notes to?" His strong arms held her in a tight grip. She could feel how muscular he really was underneath his dark robes. For the first time in this time period, she was deathly afraid of Snape and what he could do to her.
"He would not take kindly to having a spy sharing his bed." Hermione's heart beat so fast she was sure that Severus could also feel it as he was holding her so close. A feral grin spread across his face as he waited for an answer from her. His grip around her waist tightened as he molded her to his frame. It was with a sick fascination that Hermione wondered what he was thinking holding her so tight? She had seen the lewd looks from many of the men as they watched her walking around the manor. Hermione had never seen Severus giving her those looks until now. She could feel every square inch of him as he held her close against his rigid chest, including the hard bulge between his legs that had only gotten bigger the longer he held her against him. To say she was frightened only touched the surface to her feelings. He could ask anything of her, with him holding valuable information over her head. She tried not to squirm, as it would only excite this man more. It was also becoming more painful having his wand pressing into her neck.
"It's none of your business whom I send messages to Severus," she spat out with a mixture of fury and fear. He whipped her around so her breasts were now heaving against his chest. His eyes traveled from hers, to her chest, and back to her eyes once again. He seemed to be enjoying this moment too much as his lips curled into a nasty grin. Drat that they were also in a quiet alcove, away from the main body where most people walked. Hermione liked to be alone on this top floor to think and plan. She hadn't heard anyone following her, but as distracted as she had been lately, she wasn't too surprised at Snape's attack.
"Why would he believe you over me? I'm his woman and I have no reason to betray him." The lie almost stuck in her throat as the words were processed in Snape's head. She actually felt like the message hadn't been sent to betray Tom; but to at least give Lily and Harry a chance to defend themselves and survive the upcoming battle. She still desperately loved Tom, and had hopes of saving him and living a long life with Tom and her son. Her secret plan was always resting at the back of her mind; when to initiate it was still in the works.
The sneer on Severus's face grew, "All I would need to do is show him my memory of what I saw. I wouldn't need to say anything else. Your own lies would speak for themselves with that one memory." Hermione knew what he said was truth. She had to think quickly of something to get her out of this lethal predicament.
Then it came to her, "What would the Dark Lord think if he knew that one of his most valuable Death Eaters was in love with a Mudblood?" It almost made her vomit to speak the words, but she knew they had hit the target. Snape's wand moved away from her neck, but he crushed her even tighter to his body.
"What are you going on about? What do you think you know?" His anger was making him red in the face. He was gripping her so hard it was becoming difficult to breathe. But she knew that she had found her way out of this current dilemma.
She only uttered one word, "Lily," and Snape let go of her so quickly that Hermione fell to the floor. He menacingly stood above, hovering, and she felt the heat from his anger. She looked up at him and smiled. "You keep my secret…" she stood and faced him, "and I'll keep yours."
They stood glaring at each other until Snape spoke, "Fine, but you will take a wand oath not to ever mention her name alongside with mine." Hermione with a determined look pulled out her wand and extended it towards his.
"I, Hermione MacMillan, do solemnly swear that I will never mention Lily Potter's name with Severus Snape's name. I will keep his secret about his…feelings towards her, safe. This is my oath." Their wands lit up and the deal was sealed. "Now, you will do the same for me."
Severus touched his wand against Hermione's, "I, Severus Snape, do solemnly swear that I will never tell of seeing Hermione MacMillan sending a message, with Thanatos, to wherever it went. I will keep this secret forever. This is my oath." Once again the wands lit up at the end of the sealing of this deal.
Both of them lowered their wands, Hermione putting hers away. She then leaned up to whisper into Severus's ear, "By the way, my message was to Lily." His startled look showed how this news shook him up. "She is my friend and I want her to be kept safe." The harsh looks she had been getting from the man had disappeared; they had been replaced with the gentle looks betraying his feelings for Lily Potter. Their eyes met in mutual understanding. He nodded his head, pushed off from the wall and walked away. Hermione let out a long-held breath of air. She crumbled to the floor, held her head in her hands, and wept.

After a long cry, Hermione composed herself enough to head back to her quarters. She opened the doors to be met with a surprise, "Well, if it isn't my two most favorite men in the world." Tom was on the settee, holding and talking to Thomas. His lazy smile beamed towards her as she walked through the doors, shutting them. Thomas began jumping up and down at the sight of his mum. "Mum, mum," Thomas began chanting in his little baby voice.
"When did he learn to do that?" Tom asked. He looked proudly at his son.
"He just started saying it last week." Hermione smiled down at her beautiful son. "I've been wanting to tell you, but…" Tom looked up at her and patted the seat next to him.
"I'm sorry, my love. We've been very busy with our planning. I wasn't neglecting you or Thomas on purpose." She could see how tired he was from the dark circles ringing his eyes. He was still so darkly handsome, with his thick hair laced with gray streaks. Tom set Thomas on the floor, who crawled off to play with his toys scattered around the room. He then reached out and drew her within his arms. She felt safe there, directly opposite of the arms she had been held in not over an hour ago.
"I've missed you my Lord." Hermione reached out to smooth her hands through his hair, and down the front of his chest. She leaned in to find his lips, to show him how much she had missed him. His arms encircled her pulling her on top of him as they now were lying down on the settee.
'I've missed you also my Lady." Tom's deep voice whispered back. They lay there silently holding each other, Tom's hand leisurely stroking up and down her back. It felt so good to just be held against his warm body, while the quiet sounds of Thomas playing in the background almost lulled her to sleep.
"Hermione, you need to promise me something," his voice woke her up. "This is very important." Hermione rolled to her side to look up at him while he spoke.
"What Tom? You're worrying me." Now they both were in an upright position. Great fear rolled through Hermione as she searched Tom's face. She could see that something was troubling him. His knitted brows and worry lines were prominent on his face.
"I need you prepared to leave with Thomas at a moment's notice." His hands came to rest on her shoulders, as he looked her in the eyes. "I want you to vow to protect our son at all costs, regardless of what you see happening to me." The words almost came out with a choked sob. "He still wants our son dead and I'm sure you're included in that threat now after your little meeting with him." Hermione didn't need to ask him about whom he was talking.
"Ever since Thomas's conception Dumbledore wanted him dead. He's tried his hardest to forfeit the life of our child." Hermione started trembling at the reminder of the great threat to her son's life. Tom pulled her in tight to his chest and she wrapped her arms around the man she loved. Her face nestled against him feeling the outline of his muscular chest. This was the safest place she could ever be. Nothing in the world could ever harm her if she could only stay right here in Tom's arms.
"You know that I will do everything, even give my life, to protect Thomas." Her words came out as a strangled whisper. "No one will harm our child." She knew that meant anyone, including the man currently holding her. The bond between lovers was strong, but Hermione now knew that the bond between a mother and her child was even stronger. There was no greater love on the Earth. She'd always thought about this, especially when she thought of how Lily had saved Harry with her love. But once Thomas was placed in her arms, she knew the reality and intensity of this bond.
"When Tom? You need to tell me what is happening? I can't truly protect our son unless you tell me when your plans are taking place." All pretenses had left, especially after Tom's plea for her to protect their son. Something had to be happening and happening soon. The hesitation in his face was apparent, as he looked across the room at their son. This man usually showed no fear whatsoever, but there was something different about tonight. He was troubled and it all centered on she and Thomas. It had been a long time since she had seen this kind of agony on Tom's face. It had been that day many years ago, on the Astronomy Tower, when Dumbledore had her trapped with the time turner around her neck. Tom had been in a helpless situation where he couldn't help his lover or his unborn son. Dumbledore had wanted to ruin this man, and he knew taking away the only things he cared about would make that destruction possible. They both knew standing on the tower that day that their lives would never be the same. Hermione's heart broke that day, knowing that this one action would hurtle Tom towards the Lord Voldemort that would wreck havoc on so many. Sitting next to her broken heart, there grew a massive hatred for the wizard named Albus Dumbledore.
"Next week…It's all starting next Tuesday Hermione. I want you and Thomas gone, somewhere safe, before then." She pulled back to look up to him. Her emotions were spinning out of control. She didn't want to leave Tom's side, but she knew she had to protect Thomas.
"My place has always been by your side, fighting for you…with you." The ugly realities of war swept over her once again, filling her heart with sorrow. With the nasty shift in the timeline anything could happen now. What would she do if Tom were killed in this first war? She had already lost so many people to war. The idea of burying someone else almost made her collapse. "I feel so torn. I'm your woman, and I made an oath to stay by your side to make the prophecy come to pass. I promised Flamina…" Hermione dropped down on the floor finding it hard to breathe. "She'll come back and take everything away from me." Paranoia started taking over as Hermione thought more about the "what if's" that could happen.
Tom knelt down by her and shook her, "Hermione, stop! Helping Thomas survive will be insuring the prophecy will come to pass." His hands came up to hold her face, "I know that you want to be by my side, you are a strong and powerful witch. Merlin I feel so lucky." He reached over to kiss her lips, soft and then firm. "Don't you see? What you are doing in this war, keeping Thomas safe, will be the most important part of the plan? Why do you think I've been keeping you out of the planning? I know you too well." He lifted her up to snuggle against his chest. He held her tight so she would look at him. "I know how sometimes you go running into things like a daft Gryffindor. I can't let you do that this time." Hermione didn't know whether to be angry or laugh at what Tom said. Little did he know how close to the truth he was, all except for the daft part.
Putting her down on her feet his hand stroked her cheek, "One of our spies in The Order found out that Dumbledore has a team of wizards that have been assigned…" Tom couldn't finish what he was saying. "Aww! Burn his soul to everlasting Hades!" He rushed over to pick up Thomas and held him against him. "That fucking bastard has ordered them to kill our son." Hermione's trembling hand went out to stroke her son's curly hair. In his innocence he reached out with his pudgy hand, and with a giggle grabbed his mum's hair. The icy fear trickled through her, as the anger towards Dumbledore enflamed stronger. With a few words it'd all turned worse than she could have ever imagined.
