Chapter 64
It was two days until the end of term and none of the students were paying much attention in class. Severus set his students essays rather than risk having them blow up his classroom because they were not paying attention to what they were doing.
For once however, he was not looking forward to the summer break. This summer would decide the fate of the whole wizarding world. By the end of July they would know whether or not Voldemort would reign.
If Severus had his way, he would avada the bastard while he lay in his bed, fuck the horcrux’s. But each evening they’d both sat well into the early hours, studying the dark magic books in the wall. Eventually Severus found a simple spell that involved invoking the shattered spirit to reveal itself for mere moments. The only trouble was you had to know where the horcrux’s was to be able to see the shattered spirit in the first place. There was also the problem of being able to use the spell outside of the wall without bringing the Ministry down on their heads.
Severus however practiced the wand movements as shown in the book. When he felt confident he had it right, he flicked his wand, waved and circled anti-clockwise twice and recited the spell.
Of course nothing happened since they were in the wall living room and their were no horcrux’s in there.
Albus came to their rooms the following morning however with the news that Wormtail and Nagini had simultaneously acted most odd about two-thirty that morning. The snake had coiled up tightly and emitted a dark glow. Wormtail on the other hand had run into his masters bedroom and woken him to show him the silver hand he bore. It was clenched tight and had the same dark glow as the serpent laid beside Voldemorts bed.
Severus smiled broadly. “I believe we have found the missing horcrux’s headmaster.”
He explained what he and Sky had been researching and that he’d invoked the spell at that time merely for practice.
Sky, having heard the conversation came through from the nursery with Paul and Tony, while Effy carried Alex to his father.
Sky passed Paul to Albus and they discussed what Bill Weasley had seen in the mirror at Headquarters.
Albus suggested Sky bring Wormtail and Nagini up in the wall mirror so Severus could invoke the spell again. That way they could be certain it was the spell that caused a reaction in the snake and the rat man.
The boys crawled about the wall bedroom under the watchful eye of Effy as Sky tuned the mirror into Wormtail.
Severus did the spell and sure enough, Wormtails silver hand clenched and the dark glow appeared. She focussed the image on Nagini and it too reacted the same way.
“That confirms it Severus. Those two are definitely the horcrux’s. The problem is, how do we destroy them?” The Headmaster said.
“Well the snake should be easy enough, we can kill it through the mirror.” Sky suggested.
“There is more to destroying a horcrux’s that merely destroying it’s host Sky. The spirit itself must be destroyed.” Severus told her. “That in itself is a dangerous task.”
A message was sent to Harry Potter, saying that the horcrux’s were found and under surveillance, and the search could be called off.
The trio retuned to number 12, avoiding the mass exodus of students waiting for the carriages that would take them to Hogsmead station.
Sky and Severus once again stood to see off the departing students, this time accompanied by the triplets, Severus’ hands gripping the buggy handles tightly, his knuckles white, and growling at anyone who dared to lean in too close to the babbling boys. He glared round portentously as several of the older male students dared to give Sky a hug before departing for the last time.
Sky completely ignored her husbands mood as she watched them leave to go to their respective homes, envying them slightly, though not as much as she once had. Sky had her own family now, though she wondered how they would be affected by the time the fight with Voldemort was over. One thing Sky was certain of however, Voldemort would not, could not be allowed to get his hands on her children. She would sacrifice everything to protect them and Severus, including herself if necessary.
Harry, Ron and Hermione arrived at Hogwarts the following afternoon. They were accompanied by the whole Order of the Phoenix and for the first time ever, Sky allowed them all access to the wall. She demonstrated how she could focus on anyone through an ordinary mirror and Severus cast the spell that showed the horcrux’s.
After three days of discussions, debates and downright arguing, it was decided that Albus and Harry, the only ones with any experience of destroying horcrux’s, would be the ones to destroy the final two.
Molly and Ginny volunteered to take the triplets to the Burrow for the duration, along with Effy and Spin.
Sky would bring Nagini’s image up in the mirror and Severus would cast the spell to reveal the horcrux’s, thus temporally immobilising the creature while Harry and Albus simultaneously destroyed both the snake and the horcrux’s. After a few days of respite, they would repeat the procedure with Wormtails hand. It was unanimously decided that Wormtails life was not an issue when it came down to destroying his hand. If the man lived through it, fair enough, he would be arrested and sent to Askaban, if not, then so be it.
Severus and Sky accompanied the boys to the Burrow. Sky was absolutely enthralled with the place and had difficulty keeping her eyes from straying everywhere at once.
Spin immediately set about taking over the housework without being asked, while Effy rearranged George and Fred’s bedroom so it was suitable for the babies.
Severus provided Molly and Ginny with portkeys, should it prove necessary to move the children in a hurry and they spent the day there with the boys while Molly complained half heartedly when Spin also took over kitchen duties.
“Goodness me, apart from looking after the babies, I am going to be redundant in my own home.” She said with a bemused smile.
“I suggest you take the opportunity to relax Molly. The boys will soon have you tearing your hair out.” Severus told her with a wry expression.
On the fourteenth of July at 2am, while Voldemort was sleeping, Sky brought up Nagini’s image in the wall mirror.
Severus immediately cast the horcrux’s detection spell and moved aside.
Albus severed the snakes head while Harry sent a powerful incendio through the mirror aimed directly at the snake. As soon as Voldemorts soul fragment appeared, it flew at the mirror as if it could see it’s assailants on the other side of it.
Harry was shocked at the speed with which the soul was advancing on him, but was fortunately ready with the sword of Gryffindor and threw it straight into the mirror, directly into the charging soul.
Voldemort woke to find his bed and room splattered with blood. It was the feel of warm blood and ash raining down on him that stirred him from his sleep in the first place. He barely had chance to make out the vague shadow of something flying towards the far wall when a sword came flying into the room and through the shadow.
He screamed in fury as the shadow burst into a screeching mass of molecules and disintegrated. Then he saw the outline of Nagini’s head at the foot of his bed and howled insanely.
He yelled for Wormtail as he waved a hand to light the torches in the room. When he saw his decapitated pet, the only thing he’d ever had any kind of feelings for, lying half cremated, headless in a large pool of her own blood he stated to shake. His own physical pain obliterated with the pain of losing his snake and his horcrux’s.
Wormtail quickly took in the scene before him and his eyes landed on the Gryffindor sword. He was about to scuttle over and pick it up, but Sky saw him and summoned it to her before he could reach it.
She passed it to Harry and turned away from the carnage in the mirror. The image immediately vanished and everyone in the room turned and left silently.
Sky and Severus lay in bed for a long time, neither one able to sleep, but not knowing what to say.
Sky thought that if there was so much blood just from a snake, how much worse would it be with a man. Wormtail was next and after him, she and Severus would be confronting Voldemort.
Severus was not in the least bit affected by the bloodshed that occurred that night. He was more concerned about how Sky would react to seeing something similar happen with Wormtail, and the subsequent destruction of Voldemort. He wondered if she still harboured any desire to try and make her father care about her. He doubted she did, but it could cause problems if he was wrong.
“Sky?”
She rolled over and looked at him in the dim light.
“I need to ask you something. Something important.”
“What is it?”
“I need to know if you … are you still of a mind to attempt to make your … Voldemort show any kind of feelings towards you?”
Sky sighed and sat up. “Severus, the day he threatened you and the boys, that was the day I lost my last vestige of hope that he might ever show anything but hatred towards me. Right now I wouldn’t care if he came to me on bended knees and begged me to love him, I want him dead. You and Alex, Paul and Tony, you are my family now. The founders too, but not him. Tom Riddle is the foulest, most loathsome creature this world has ever given birth to and I hate him Severus. I hate him with every fibre of my being.” She told him softly, but earnestly.
Severus sat up and put his arms around her. “I am sorry, but I had to know Sky. What happened tonight clearly upset you and it was only a snake that was killed. I worry how you may react when it is Wormtails turn, and subsequently Voldemort. Do you feel you are strong enough emotionally to take down a man who is already weakened by pain and the loss of much of his soul?”
“He didn’t lose his soul Severus, he gave it up willingly. He was greedy and wanted too much. As for him being weak, I think he has always been so. But instead of trying to make himself stronger as a person, he surrounded himself by others he thought powerful and tried to draw from them. And the way he did his best to destroy those weaker than himself. Severus I wanted a father, not a monster. I don’t think I will have a problem killing him if you are with me. I won’t enjoy doing it, but he won’t change and I won’t take the risk he might ever get hold of the boys sometime in the future.”
Severus lay down, taking her with him. He was pleased with her words, her mindset on the situation. She’d been perfectly calm when she told him her thoughts and feelings on the matter and he could not fault her on her sentiments in the least.
She and Severus spent a large part of the next two days at the Burrow, playing with the boys and enjoying whatever Spin put on the table.
Molly still complained a bit about not having much to do, since between them the two elves had taken over the house. Ginny however told them quietly that her mum was enjoying having so much free time and they both loved looking after the boys, when the over protective Effy let them.
Now they gathered in the wall again with Albus and Harry. It was 2am and Voldemort was awake and in his sitting room, tormenting Wormtail to take his mind off the loss of Nagini and his horcrux’s. He was always careful not to torture Wormtail to death, as far as he knew he’d lost one of his horcrux’s and did not intend to lose a second. Had he known that Wormtail was his last horcrux’s he would most likely have the animagus in a gilded cage under constant supervision. Voldemort also appeared to have acquired another wand and was using it to apply the crucio on Wormtail.
Severus offered Sky a mild calming draft before they arrived and she took it. By the time Voldemort grew bored and retired for the night, it was 4.45am and those in the wall, two were asleep.
Sky wanted to do the same but she needed to keep her wand trained on the mirror so sat cross-legged on the floor, leaning heavily against Severus who sat heavy eyed behind her. Several times she’d been tempted to summon Voldemorts wand and end the curio’s. Regardless of the fact she knew the rat man was a murderer, Sky still hated to see him suffer the crucio that way. Each time her wand twitched, Severus would gently lay a hand on her arm and prevent her from doing anything more with it, afraid of alerting the despot to the fact that someone was aware of what he was doing.
Wormtail was lying in a heap on his own, twitching and writhing just as Severus had done in previous times. The times Sky would sneak into his rooms and heal him with the wand and stone.
“Albus, he is alone.” Severus said, startling the old wizard awake.
Harry stretched and yawned, trying to focus his blurry eyes until he realised his glasses were on the table next to the chair he was dozing in. “What time is it?” he yawned to the Headmaster.
“Almost 5 o’clock. Time to destroy the last horcrux’s Harry.”
The young wizard half walked, half staggered to stand beside Sky and Severus, as Albus stood behind them.
Severus once more invoked the horcrux’s detection spell, and Wormtails silver hand clenched and glimmered darkly in the half light. Albus fired a high intensity melting spell at the silver hand of the insomnious but still writhing man, causing the hand to liquefy, rather than slicing it from his arm and causing unnecessary additional pain.
‘Typical Gryffindors.’ Severus thought ungraciously.
As the puddle of silver spread across the floor, the dark shadowed fragment of Voldemorts shattered soul rose high and hovered near the ceiling for a moment. Then as before, it was as though it could see the small group watching through the mirror and swooped towards them. Harry threw the sword of Gryffindor straight at it, only this time he missed. Still being slightly sleep fogged, his aim was off and this time the dark spirit whooshed through the mirror into the wall sitting room. It slowed and moved leisurely round the room, apparently examining it’s surroundings and the group of stunned people in there. Then it let out a reverberating roar and headed straight for Harry.
Sky screamed, Albus froze and Severus kicked out, catching Harry hard on the hip and sending him sprawling across the floor milliseconds before the spirit was able to touch him.
The spirit bellowed in anger and frustration as it rounded to attack again.
Sky, Severus and Albus all trained their wands on it, Harry was still trying to figure out what sent him sprawling and was unaware of the dark shadow flying towards him.
Severus shouted at him to stay where he was and not move while he, Albus and Sky all sent respective incendio, petrifaction and imperio spells at it.
The spirit was slowed by the combined curses and Sky yelled at it to ‘stop’ as her stone and wand glowed darkly at the thing.
It froze for a second, then turned to look at her, a grotesque disfigured grimace on it’s hideous face. A slight orange flame surrounded it for a moment and petered out, held now only by Sky’s imperio and waiting for iher next command.
“Harry sat back on his hunkers, staring wide eyed at the spirit above him. He really wanted to shuffle back so he was not under the cursed thing, but the pain in his hip was such that any movement almost caused him to pass out.
“Do something.” He whispered to no one in particular, unable to tear his eyes away from the thing and just wanting it away from him.
“What do you think we are trying to do Potter. Now shut up and keep still.” Severus hissed with a glare at the boy-who-
lived-to-be-a-constant-pain-in-his-arse.
Sky kept her wand trained on the spirit, unsure what to do with it now she had in in her control, and afraid to break her concentration in case it flew at one of them again.
Albus’ and Severus’ eyes flickered constantly from Sky to the spirit and back again, neither sure if she had something in mind or if not, what they could do to destroy the abomination in front of them. The sword of Griffindor was through the mirror, out of their reach and they knew of nothing else that could destroy it.
A sudden flash of red and gold appeared in the room, covered in a ball of flame and headed straight for the immobile spirit.
A high scream emitted from the dark phantom as Fawkes speared it with her beak and travelled though it, causing it to incinerate in mid air.
The phoenix landed gently on the Headmasters shoulder and turned it’s black eyes on Sky, then Severus. She trilled sadly and disappeared.
The two older wizards and Sky slid to the floor to watch in amazement as a shower of ash rained down on Harry, he in turn coughing and spluttering as the ash choked him
Sky waved her wand in the same manner as she had always done to clean the wall whenever she entered to begin a new learning regime with one of the founders and the ash cleared, leaving the place spotless, as though nothing untoward had ever happened there.
Voldemort, aka Tom Riddle, threw his robe back on and rushed from his bedroom just in time to see another part of his soul disappear into thin air. His eyes fell to the writhing mass on the floor.
“Wormtail, what happened?” He seethed, his voice deadly, dangerous.
“Wormtail whimpered and rolled to his side, unable to speak or stand for the excruciating pain boiling in his veins and his broken bones. As yet he was unaware of his missing hand and looked pleadingly at his master, even though he knew it would do him no good.
“Fool! Imbecile!” The Dark Lord screamed. His eyes fell to the puddle of silver and the stump at the end of Wormtails arm. “NOOOOOO!” He bellowed, his pain once more forgotten as he moved to the liquid silver and bent to run his fingers through it. “This cannot be.” He hissed. “AVADA KEDAVRA!” He shouted, aiming his wand at Wormtail and killing him instantly. “Avada kedavra!” He cried over and over, sending the curse out randomly at anything and everything he could and could not see in the hopes of hitting whatever had dared to invade his place of sanctuary. “Daughter if mine, I will kill you with my bare hands.” he said quietly into the room. “You are mine now and I will kill you slowly. I will spit in your face as I dismember you slowly. I will take you apart finger by finger, foot be foot, limb by limb. Your children and husband will watch every part of you that I dissect and I will feed you to them piece by piece.”
Fortunately Sky, Severus, and the others did not hear his ranting, his hatred and obdurate intentions towards her. The connection in the mirror was gone the second the spirit entered the wall.
Voldemorts eyes lit up when he caught sight of the glistening sword of Gryffindor laying on the floor in front of him. He smiled evilly to himself.
