CH 64 Calling sielulintu
They stood in a large cavernous room, it was dank and dismal. The walls were bereft of decoration other than chains fastened at various heights, at the end of each chain hung a metal cuff. Lou shivered. “This is creepy Severus.” She whispered. “I don’t like it.”
“You do not need to whisper Lou, no one can hear you. This is a memory, nothing more.”
“That doesn’t make it any less creepy. What is this place?”
“This is where the Dark Lord currently resides. More than likely this is where the ceremony will take place.”
“In here? But it’s horrible; we can’t get married in here.”
“We do not have much say in the choice of location I’m afraid. It is not somewhere I would have chosen myself. To your left, that is the Dark Lord.”
Lou leaned to look round Severus and saw a large throne like chair sitting on a podium near a wall.
“Arrgh!” She wailed and clamped a hand over her mouth, expecting the hideous creature sitting on the throne to turn and look at her.
“He is merely a memory Lou, I told you. He cannot see or hear you.”
“Yeah, I forgot. Urgh, he’s horrible, what happened to him? Is that what happens when you lose your itse’s?”
“I suppose it must be. He has changed often over the years; I assume each change followed the making of a Horcrux.”
“The itse. We’ll have to call for sielulintu in the morning, he’ll need time to collect them from Tuonela and bring them here, then he can release them during the ceremony. The Sampo will have to stay wrapped up in your pocket, don’t try and touch it till you take the collar off me, it won’t try and draw you once the ceremony starts, at least it shouldn’t.”
“I am so glad of your certainty on that score, it inspires me with confidence.” He told her dryly.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to scare you. The book says you’ll be okay and I believe it. The Sampo’s real, so everything else must be too.”
‘Circe I hope so.” He thought.
When he led her upstairs that night, she clung to him. “Severus, I don’t want to be on my own tonight, I’m scared.”
He looked down at the young woman in his arms, her head tilted back so she could see him. She looked frightened out of her wits and more in need of comfort than he’d ever seen anyone look before.
“Lou, are you sure you cannot …it only for one more night.”
“Please Severus; I’ll be pacing the floor all night if I’m on my own.”
“Then a dreamless sleep potion?”
“Nooo. I’ll feel like I have a hangover in the morning. Severus we know what we want to happen tomorrow, but neither of us knows for sure how it’s gonna turn out. Please, I just want to lie with you, I feel safe when I’m with you; I can sleep if you’re next to me.”
He sighed, kissed the top of her head and resigned himself to the fact that she was right; there was no way of guaranteeing tomorrow’s outcome. “Very well, I shall try and exercise some restraint on your behalf. Go put a nightgown on, and make certain it is less than risqué, I shall find it difficult enough keeping my hands of you. Something modest, unassuming. And make sure it covers everything.” He called as she skipped down the landing to her room.
Lou smiled a little as she entered her room. After all that happened, he wanted her to wear a granny nightgown. She looked through them all, Madam Malkin had made sure her nightwear was as risqué as her underwear. She used her wand to transfigure one into a long, white cotton nightgown. It fastened high on her neck and the hem reached the floor. It was baggy and had long sleeves. ’Well if this doesn’t make him look at me as though I’m a pensioner, I don’t know what will.’ She thought, heading to his bedroom.
Lou knocked on the door and waited. It was only seconds before he opened the door. “It was not necessary to knock, what on earth are you wearing?” He asked shocked.
“A granny gown like you said.” Lou replied, walking in and climbing into the bed.
Severus followed her with his eyes. ‘Bloody hell that gown is worse than some of her others. She looks so …virginal.’ He gulped and headed for his bathroom. He transfigured a pair of his boxers into black silk pyjama bottoms and put them on. It was the first time in many years that he’d actually dressed for bed, always preferring to sleep nude.
When he walked back into the bedroom Lou was knelt on top of the bed holding a teddy bear of all things.
“Look what Tilly brought me. She said it used to be yours and I could have it.” Lou looked pleased when she told him, then her face fell. “It’s alright isn’t it? If you don’t want me to have it, I understand.”
“Not at all, I did not even realise the thing still existed. Keep it, it’s yours.”
“Thanks, he’s soft. Tilly said you called him Tata.”
“Did she indeed.” He said, a frown on his face. ‘I shall be having words with that elf.’ He decided.
“Why did you call him Tata?”
“I have no idea, not get under the covers and go to sleep.”
Lou settled in beside him, still cuddling the bear. “Night Severus.”
“Goodnight Lou.” He replied.
“Night Tata.” She whispered.
‘May the Gods give me strength.’ He thought, peering at her out the corner of his eye.
Lou soon fell into a deep sleep, snuggled up to Severus and cuddling the bear, she felt more contented than she had for a long time.
Severus however was not so contented. At first, the sight of her in that white gown brought forth his baser urges, then when he saw her cuddling his old teddy bear, his favourite teddy bear, she looked so much younger even then, she was. Now he was watching her sleep and thought she looked like a small angel.
She was on her side facing him, her knees drawn up and still clutching at the bear, her other arm was across his waist, her fingers curled into a loose fist. Her hair was half on the pillow and half covering her face so he gently moved it away. Her lips were slightly parted and he thought she looked like a beautiful child. His stomach sank. ‘A child, I shall be marrying a child. A child I have already fucked and should all go well tomorrow, I shall be fucking her again, and again and again..’ Severus was convinced he was now a bigger monster than Voldemort.
He tried to prise the bear from her clutches so she would not look quite so childlike, but she whimpered in her sleep, holding tightly to it and snuggling closer to him, so he let it go.
Lou was first to wake next day. She was still holding the bear and still snuggled up to Severus. She propped herself up to look at him. She noticed all his frown lines were gone when he slept, he looked peaceful, content. Lou thought he was like a dark prince, handsome, tall and dangerous. It was delicious and scary at the same time and she shivered, a familiar tingle starting down below. It wasn’t a thought that just occurred to her, she’d thought it for quite a long time, she’d never dared to tell him though in case he laughed at her. Even after all they’d been through, she was still unsure of him and more unsure of herself.
“Do you really think that?” He asked in a deep purring voice.
“Ooo. I thought you were asleep, do I think what?” She asked when she recovered from her fright.
“That I am a tall, dark, handsome prince?”
“You heard? Oh Severus, that’s not fair.” She said, reddening, dropping the teddy bear and scooting from the bed to run to the bathroom. She felt embarrassed that he’d heard her thoughts again.
Severus chuckled at her reaction. He’d been half-awake for a while and was aware of her looking at him, when he heard her private musings about him he was intrigued, flattered. Especially he enjoyed the effect it had on her. He hoped she wasn’t too long in the bathroom he had a raging hard on and needed to pee badly, but he did not want her to see the effect she’d had on him.
When he heard her in the shower he cursed, then dashed in to use the toilet. Unfortunately peeing did nothing to rid him of his erection so he waited in the bedroom until she was finished. As soon as she came through wrapped in a towel and walked to the wardrobe, he threw off the covers and shot back into the bathroom. Lou had no idea he was having more than just a shower.
They had breakfast and Lou called for Kreatcher.
“Kreatcher, we’re gonna call for sielulintu, have you brought what we need?”
Kreatcher came forward with Lou’s satchel, put his hand inside and drew out a small knife, about five inches long, what looked to Severus like a whistle, and an odd-looking spoon.
“What are these?” He asked Lou.
Lou picked up the knife first. “Sami knife. It is similar to what you call the altheme, only smaller. It‘s sheath, and the handle are made from reindeer horn.” The she took the whistle. “This is exactly what it looks to be, a whistle, also made from reindeer horn. This.” She told him, holding up the last object. “Is the Kesa. A drinking cup, again made from reindeer horn. Please sit with me Severus.” She said, patting the space beside her on the floor.
“When sielulintu comes, he will want payment before he will go to Tuonela. You’re gonna have to help me again Severus, like you did at Gringotts.”
“Gringotts? I do not understand, what payment does this sielulintu want?”
“Blood, enough to fill the Kasa. Half from me, half from you. I can’t cut myself, you know what I’m like. The cut must be made on the right earlobe, the blood caught directly into the Kasa. Then the cut can be healed. Only the Sami knife can be used.”
“Lovely.” he said dryly. “And the whistle?”
“To call sielulintu. Are you ready?”
“I suppose I shall have to be.”
Lou picked up the whistle and blew as hard as she could.
Severus watched her and cringed, expecting to have his eardrums burst with the noise, he was surprised when he heard nothing. “I think your whistle is broken.”
Lou shook her head and silently blew the whistle twice more.
“Now what?” Severus asked. He was starting to get agitated and felt rather foolish sitting in the middle of his living room floor while Lou blew down a whistle that did not even work.
“He comes.” Kreatcher whispered. “sielulintu comes.”
Seemingly, from out of nowhere, there appeared a large black swan. It landed in front of them and looked from Lou to Severus, who sat staring at the bird with his mouth open, then back to Lou.
“Who calls sielulintu?”
“I do.” Lou told him.
“You have the payment?”
“We are ready to give payment sielulintu.” She told the swan.
“You want I should travel to Tuonela for a lost soul, who’s?”
“I want you to find six itse. The itse of Tom Riddle. Two are etiainen, two are in Tuonela, two are contained in artefacts unknown. The rest still reside within him. He has removed the itse with the sole purpose of prolonging his life. They must be returned to him today, joined with his remaining itse, then all returned to me before his henki can be destroyed.”
“You have the Sampo?”
“I do sielulintu.”
“Then give me your payment.”
Kreatcher stood behind Lou, holding the Kasa on her right shoulder as Lou presented the Sami to Severus.
When he took it from her, she screwed her eyes tight.
“For goodness sake do not jump this time or I shall probably take your bloody ear off.” He told her.
To her credit, Lou only flinched a bit when Severus sliced down her earlobe. He watched in fascination as the blood dripped heavily into the bowl.
“You heal now.” Kreatcher told him, bringing him out of his reverie and he quickly cast a healing charm on her ear.
“That hurt a lot.” She told him, pouting. “Your turn now.”
Lou moved behind him to hold the Kasa while Kreatcher came to his side and relieved him of the Sami.
Severus looked alarmed. “Are you not going to make the cut?” He asked, turning round to face Lou.
“Eew no, I couldn’t, it’s safer is Kreatch does it.”
Severus was not so sure as he turned back and saw the old elf grinning at him evilly. This time Severus screwed his eyes shut tight, convinced the elf would like to cut his throat.
‘She’s right, it does bloody hurt.’ He thought as the elf sliced his earlobe.
“You heal now.” Kreatcher told her when the Kasa was full.
Lou healed his ear and as Severus sat rubbing at his still painful lobe, Lou carefully took the Kasa and held it in front of sielulintu, who dipped his beak into the blood and drank until the Kasa was dry.
“Have the Sampo with you, otherwise all itse return to Tuonela.” sielulintu told her before spreading his wings, taking flight and disappearing.
“Is that it?”
“That’s the itse sorted, they’ll find their way back to Voldemort during the ceremony. We still have a lot to get through yet.” Lou told him.
“You think I do not know that? I was just surprised with how easy this part was.”
“Yeah, but the rest isn’t gonna be so easy is it?”
He said nothing as he stood and helped Lou to her feet.
“Thanks Kreatch, we couldn’t have done it without you. You wont forget to bring the Sampo will you?”
“Kreatcher not forgetting anything. Kreatcher has Pegnose whitter, whitter, whittering in Kreatchers ear all time so can’t forget. What time is you leaving?”
“The ceremony begins at ten, we shall leave here at ten forty five.” Severus told the elf.
Kreatcher pulled a face and left
Lou giggled. “I think Peg’s keeping him in his place, don’t you?” She asked Severus, waggling her eyebrows.
“It would appear to be the case, though do not get any ideas of doing likewise with me.”
“I wouldn’t dare.” She said, still giggling.
Severus went upstairs to adorn his best ceremonial robes, this time he did not retrieve his Deatheater mask and robe.
Lou‘s jaw dropped when she saw him. “Oh Severus. You look …like my dark prince.” She finished shyly. “I wish I …” Her face fell as she banished her clothing and stood before him naked once again. This was not at all how she’d pictured herself to be on her wedding day.
Severus hooked a finger under her chin and lifted her face to meet his. He wiped the tears from her eyes and leaned down to kiss her. He kissed her gently at first, then deepened the kiss, invading her mouth with his tongue as he held her close. When their lips parted, he looked at her. “Lou, you could never look more beautiful to me that you do now. Now gown could ever be good enough, you are as the Gods made you, perfect.”
Kreatcher reappeared carrying the linen wrapped Sampo. “You must give it him, be sure yous loves is strong or he will die.” Kreatcher said, passing her the Sampo.
Severus held out his hand, he knew exactly what he felt for Lou now, and trusted her enough that she felt the same.
He fixed his eyes on hers as she unwrapped the Sampo and passed it to him.
He was still relieved when he felt no ill effects once he took it from her. He placed it in an inside pocket of his robe, then went to adjust his clothing so it would not show. “It is as though it is not there, how strange.” He said, looking for some sign of a lump in his robe and finding none. “It is also remarkably light, I did not expect that.”
“The Sampo was forged with magic Severus, it will only be seen when it wants to be seen. At least that’s what it says in the book.”
“Then the book must be correct.” ‘It has to be.’ He thought. “Are you ready?”
She nodded, unable to speak for fear of crying.
Severus wrapped his arms tightly round her and put a hand to his mark before apparating them both to the Dark Lords lair.
They arrived near the entrance to a large tumbledown mansion. It looked as though it hadn’t been inhabited for many years.
Severus kept Lou close to him, his cloak as well as his arms wrapped protectively about her.
He was not surprised to find an assemblage of Deatheaters waiting for them in the grounds.
“Snape, our Lord is waiting. He is quite excited about today.”
“Indeed Bangstal, then you may inform him that we have arrived.” Severus told him, still keeping Lou enclosed in the folds of his cloak.
“Lets see her then before I go in.”
“No Bangstal, she is not here so that you may ogle her, now go.” Severus demanded.
Bangstal did as he was bid, knowing better than to argue with Snape, as the other Deatheaters walked behind and to the sides of Severus and Lou. They entered the building, Lou looking through the gap in the top of Severus’ robe, thankful that her body was, at least for now, hidden from view.
The main entrance was in such a state of disrepair that Severus removed his wand to scourgify the floor before they crossed the threshold. It was littered with debris and since Lou was barefoot, he did not want her to have to risk cutting her feet on the small stones and pieces of masonry that were lying around.
“Would it have been too much trouble for one of you to at clean the place up a bit before we arrived.” Severus growled at the troupe of men escorting them.
“The Dark Lord did not ask us to do anything through here.” One of them retaliated.”
Severus said nothing, merely glared at the man who’d spoken.
They were led down a dim corridor and stopped at a large wooded door. One of the Deatheaters stepped forward and opened it. Severus stayed where he was and heard the man announce their arrival.
“Well why are you still here you fool, show them in.” The Dark Lord told him.
Severus removed his arms from her, thus the protection of the cloak, and gave her a brief smile before stepping through the door. Lou followed as close to seven paces as she could, her eyes lowered to the floor.
Both were surprised at how light the room was this time. The floor was spotless and Severus, who was able to look around, saw that the whole chamber was clean.
The walls were hung with tapestries depicting various scenes of battles, dragons and a few rather vulgar displays of couples in various positions of copulation. Sprays of flowers and white ribbons hung elegantly from the ceiling and walls, a long table was set against one wall and was filled with platters of food and drink.
A long narrow carpet was laid, reaching from one end of the chamber to Voldemort’s throne, tall vases set at intervals to the sides holding more flowers.
