"That's a good look on you, Sev!" the younger man cried.
Gently, but firmly, Severus removed the item and mock-scowled at Harry. "Just because I was rail-roaded into this little get together does not mean I wish to look like a Christmas fairy."
A moment's silence followed this, before Harry burst into peals of laughter. He bent over, gasping, tears pouring down his cheeks. "Oh! ... Sev!" he cried, "I had an image of you... dressed all in white, with golden wings and blond hair..." he snickered again, "It was just too funny!"
Severus' mouth quirked but he suppressed the smile ruthlessly. Only his dancing eyes told Harry that, far from being irritated, he too was amused.
With an effort, Severus said sternly, "This is your idea of a good time, is it? Mocking me?!"
At once serious, Harry responded, "You know my idea of a good time, Sev."
"Which is what?" Ginny's cheerful voice broke the intense moment.
She carried James on one hip and looked radiantly beautiful. A warm glow suffused her skin, and her red hair picked up highlights from the decorations, turning her tresses to golden fire.
Harry felt his breath catch. She looked so very beautiful. With total honesty he answered her question, "Time with all of us, of course."
He moved across the room and hugged her before reaching for his son. "Ready for Christmas number one, kiddo?" he asked, looking into the small face.
A gurgle of pleasure answered him.
"Yeah, me too."

The presents (bought especially for their 'date') had been opened and admired, the turkey eaten, and the crackers pulled.
Now, Severus sank into a seat groaning as his full stomach protested. Ginny settled at the other end of the sofa, James balanced on her knee. Harry nestled between them, one hand rubbing his overfull belly.
"That was so good!" he groaned, looking at Ginny.
"Indeed, Ginevra," Severus added, "an excellent meal! I doubt that Mama Weasley's will better it." Even said with Severus' traditional snark, the compliment was still clear.
Flushing a little with embarrassment and pleasure, Ginny smiled happily. "It wasn't just me," she said, "you both helped." She leaned over and kissed her husband. "And we wouldn't even be having this day if you hadn't suggested it." She gave him a private smile, showing her love. "Thank you, Harry. It was a lovely idea. Let's make sure we all do this regularly. I'd hate us to be so busy with our lives that we forget to spend time with one another."
Harry nodded, heart full. Sitting with the three people he loved best, he was utterly content.
Severus, sitting next to Harry, was hard pressed to not kiss the younger man. His arms longed to slide along the seat back and gather his beloved into his embrace. He ached with the love he felt, and hated himself for ruining this wonderful moment with his secret, selfish desires. He loved Ginny, loved little James, and never wanted to hurt them; but his need for Harry drove him relentlessly. He was afraid when he considered the future: what was in store for the little family. Would, one day, it all become too much and he would confess to Ginny? How could he live this lie? Betraying her trust and love?
He wanted Harry. He needed Harry. He loved Harry. And he knew that Harry wanted and loved him. But did Harry need him?
And still, there was Ginny and James to consider. Harry would never do anything to jeopardise his son's happiness. And neither would Severus.

The next day was lovely. A magical day out of time. Sunlight bounced off the thick piles of bright snowdrifts pressed up against the trunks of the large dark trees of the forest nearby. The sky was a crisp blue, and the chill in the air was exhiliarating for the three adults who walked along a magically cleared path through the woods.
Harry stopped when he saw a frozen pond and exclaimed brightly, face red with cold, "Oh! I always wanted to ice-skate! Always! But I never had the chance! Can we?" His face was turned to Severus then to Ginny.
The older man caught the confusion in the woman's eyes. "I doubt Ginevra has encountered ice-skating previously," and began to explain what it was.
The doubtful look on her face made it clear she thought the idea of sliding about on metal blades ridiculous, but she agreed, albeit reluctantly, to join Harry on the ice - after Severus had ensured that it was safe.
Stumbling about together, conjured skates on their feet, Harry and Ginny laughed and clung together. Both spent more time getting up than actually skating. And both were clearly loving every moment of it.
Severus sat on a fallen log. James had snuggled up to his 'uncle' and his eyes were drooping as he fought off sleep. Above him, Severus sat gazing at James, and then at his father, a contented smile upon his lips.
After the ice-skating came the walk back to the house, a sleeping James held tightly in Severus' arms. The three adults walked in silence, the silence of happiness and peace and complete trust.
Once inside, Ginny pointed her wand at the fireplace and muttered "Incendio". Shrugging out of her coat, she told the two men to warm up before the blazing fire and disappeared into the kitchen, returning moments later with a tray holding three steaming cups of cocoa and a bottle of juice for her son.
They settled onto the thick rug in front of the flames and the three grownups drank down their cocoa whilst James tried to pull his shoes and socks off.
The warmth of the room made them drowsy, and with a yawn, Harry's eyes closed. His head tilted to settle, with a small sigh of happiness, onto Severus' shoulder.
Severus startled at bit at the contact, a jolt of guilt forcing him to cast a wary eye at Ginny, his mind racing with possible excuses. He was, however, surprised at the expression in Ginny's warm, brown eyes. She was smiling, shaking her head slightly in amusement.
Ginny glanced over at her husband an indulgent smile on her lips. She was glad Harry was so close to Severus, although she was a little surprised at just how close they were. Still, when she thought about how every father figure Harry had ever had had been taken from him, she really thought she really shouldn't be surprised. Hadn't she come to look upon their former teacher as a father figure herself? After all, she'd said it herself. Severus was family.
