Two figures
rushed out of the house to greet Harry. “Thank Merlin you’re all right,” said a
chubby blond man. “But you look bloody awful! Was the ride a little rough?”
“You could say
that.” Harry swallowed hard as he was led inside. “We were attacked. It was
like they knew.”
“What?” Ted
Tonks exclaimed. “But that’s impossible! Someone from the Order would have had
to leak the information, unless you were being watched that carefully.”
Harry said
nothing as he was led to a couch. “Are you all right?” asked a woman who bore
an unsettling resemblance to Bellatrix Lestrange.
Harry nodded.
“I…I think so.” He was shaken, but not physically hurt.
“And what
about Dora?” Ted asked. “Is she all right, too?”
“I don’t
know,” Harry answered truthfully. “We all went our separate ways.” He felt a
sudden pang of guilt. These people were worried about their daughter, and it
was all because of him.
“It’s good
you’re all right,” Ted said as he tried to hide his concern. “Your Portkey is
set to leave in a few minutes.”
Harry nodded.
He hadn’t been told anything about Portkeys, but he followed Ted Tonks and
Hagrid to a sitting room where a silver hairbrush was sitting on a little
table. When it started to glow, Harry followed Hagrid’s lead and grabbed the
other end of the brush.
He felt a
sudden tug behind his belly button and the room went black. Minutes later he
landed in wet grass. Three figures rushed toward them. Ginny flung her arms
around Harry. Molly and Lucius stood side by side, both of them a little pale.
“Did something happen?” Lucius asked. “You’re the first to come back, but
Arthur, George, James, and Moody should have been here by now. Their Portkeys
came back without them.”
Harry gazed up
at Lucius’ worried expression and he was afraid to tell him the truth. “We were
attacked,” Hagrid answered for him. “We just barely got away with those
modifications James and Arthur made to the bike.”
Harry suddenly
wished that the ground would open up and swallow him whole. Lucius started
frantically scanning the sky looking for some sign of the missing ones. “How
did they know?” Molly asked.
The five of
them stood outside and waited. The others came back one pair at a time until
only Bill, Draco, James, and Moody were missing. Everyone else had a few cuts
and bruises to nurse, but were otherwise all right. They each told their tales
of what had happened to them.
It was nearly
midnight when Bill and Draco descended from the clouds on their broom. Molly
ran to wrap her arms around her oldest son, while Draco ran straight for his
father and buried his face in the older wizard’s chest. “It was awful,” he
whimpered.
“What was
awful, Dragon?” Lucius asked softly. He desperately wanted information about
James, but he did his best to remain calm and comfort his son.
“You-Know-Who,”
Bill answered with a shiver. “We saw him.”
Draco nodded,
his face still half-buried in his father’s robes. “He went after James and
Moody. He came out of nowhere and hit…he hit Moody!”
“He never had
a chance,” Bill shook his head.
“And James?”
Lucius asked, resisting the urge to grab and shake the redhead to get more
information.
“He took
control of the broom and headed east. You-Know-Who and the Death Eaters that
were on our tail chased after him. I’m sorry we left all of you worrying. Aunt
Muriel insisted we stay and have some tea to calm our nerves.”
“I’m just glad
you’re safe,” Molly assured Bill.
“We need to go
find James,” Lucius insisted. “And try to recover Moody’s body.”
“How?” Remus
asked. “James could be anywhere.”
“Bill said he
went east,” Lucius argued. “So we’ll go east. I can’t just sit here and
wonder.”
“But you’re
going to have to,” Arthur said. “James has been in tight spots before. I’m sure
he’s fine.”
Lucius didn’t
seem very reassured, but he gave in. Kingsley returned to his post watching
over the Muggle Prime Minister while the Weasley clan went inside. Harry,
Draco, and Lucius stood huddled together in the yard. None of them were going
to move until James was safe.
The hours
ticked by with no sign of James. The echoes of the explosions Harry had heard
rang in his ears again as he watched the sky. He couldn’t be an orphan again,
he just couldn’t. He’d known that the plan was too dangerous from the moment he
was told about it. He should have resisted more, or something. Now, because of
him, Moody was dead and James was missing. Never in his worst nightmares could
he have imagined anything like this happening.
It was nearly
dawn when they saw a dark figure appear out of nowhere, a few feet in the air,
near the edge of the property. It dropped like a stone and didn’t get back up.
Lucius flew across the lawn as fast as his legs would carry him, Draco and
Harry not far behind.
James lay
unconscious in the damp grass, his body covered in burns and blood. Lucius searched
for a pulse and was relieved to find one. He scooped James up in his arms and
ran for the house, knocking frantically on the door.
To everyone’s
surprise, the door was answered by Azriel. “Thank the heavens!” the elf
exclaimed as he ushered the small group inside.
“Where did you
come from?” Harry asked, not remembering seeing the half-elf earlier.
“The portal in
the attic,” Azriel answered. “Molly called for me; she said James might be
hurt. Everyone else is in bed, so try not wake them.”
Harry nodded and followed Lucius into the
living room. Lucius laid James on the couch and Azriel set to cleaning his
wounds and bandaging him up. “He should be fine,” the half-elf assured them.
“The three of you should be getting to bed yourselves.”
Harry wanted
to stay up, but he was so tired he was about ready to fall over. He grabbed
Draco’s hand and led the blond up to Ron’s room, where he assumed they would be
sleeping. Sure enough, two small beds had been crammed into the room. Neither
boy bothered undressing; they just climbed into bed and let exhaustion take
them.
