Chapter 63
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
With help from Lynn.
It was only breakfast time and Harry already wanted to snarl. Some he expected, of course, like the story of what they had done being emblazoned across the front page of the Prophet. As anticipated, what was written had the whole school twittering about it and looks he didn't like, as they were pitying, being tossed his way by most. He could handle this end, of course, as he knew it was coming. The rest was making him barmy!
He wasn't exactly sure what was in the letter Ron, Ginny and the twins received from their parents, but he was also damned sure it was to push him for what their parents wanted, something laid out in the one he received. No! Then there was all of his friends pushing to want to talk to him alone. He had handled it by putting them off until that night. While he had to face it, he had plenty to do before then. Part of it was getting with Draco to deliver not only the letter to him, but others, including the ones to Thor and Snape. He could normally manage, but he knew he'd be called out to attend the hearing. While he ignored everyone trying to get his attention and attempting to talk to him by pretending to read the paper, he was focused on what was coming. He knew he wouldn't get a chance to go to his first class because his Solicitor was coming to get him, which meant he had to get in contact with Draco quickly so it was done before he left. Draco would need time to get with those he had to deliver messages to. If he went about it this way, he would probably have the rest of the day. He needed the time to deal with everything else going on.As he shoved the food in his mouth, hoping everyone around him took it as he didn't want to talk yet, Harry read what was in the paper. It appeared Fudge had a hand in what the Prophet printed because several key items were missing, like the Dark Mark and any mention of Death Eaters. The speculation was the attack was revenge over something to do with him. While he was sure some, like Dumbledore and those in the Order, knew better, the unwashed masses wouldn't, something that helped. He was thankful that letters related to the mess hadn't shown up yet. It was traditional for all mail to come at breakfast, of course, but he was sure by tea he would end up bombarded. So far, he only had the Weasley's letter and a couple others from those he knew, nothing he couldn't handle. It would just take time for him to sit down and formulate a response. Because he was turning everyone down, he had to word what he said carefully so not to offend or make them push further. Finally finishing the paper, at least the relevant parts, Harry tucked it and the letters into his robes to read then deal with later. Though everyone around him was trying to get him to talk, he put it off saying he needed to think for a while. Under the circumstances, it was something they could understand. Then he stood to leave, saying he was getting his books. When he passed by the Slytherin table, he shot Draco a signal, hoping he picked up on the hint. He just hoped he was fast about it since he knew he didn't have a lot of time before he would be gone for most of the day.Draco had been reading the paper intently when Potter passed close to where he was seated on his way out of the hall. Though his brow furrowed at the odd gesture, something that looked like Potter was mimicking smoking, he quickly figured out Potter meant they needed to meet up for some reason. After making an excuse, he vacated the table then went to find Potter. He wasn't sure where he wanted to meet up, but decided to go the route towards the tower, hoping it was the right way.Harry was thankful Draco could think on his feet and was logical about how he went with matters. He waited in a small hidden alcove for Draco to pass by then grabbed him by the sleeve and tugged him in. Making sure the wards were activated around it after he quickly set them up, he said, “I don't have much time because I'm going to end up called out before I get to my first class. The Dark Lord has a mission for you.” The he handed over his letter, holding onto the ones he would pass over once Draco read his own.Of course, Draco quickly tore into it then read it fast. He would reread it later to pick up on everything and make certain he missed nothing. Taking in what it said, he gave a determined nod. He could do this easily, and would. He also knew who to recruit to help, ones that wouldn't ask too many questions and would think what they wanted on the matter without realizing what he was really doing.Once he finished, he looked at Potter, determined and said, voice firm, “Where are the letters? I'll get them to their recipients.”“Just make certain you're not seen,” Harry told him, handing the letters over. “I'm sure you can manage.”“I will, don't worry. And you can consider me your shadow from here on out,” Draco assured him, quickly flipping through the letters to look at the names he had to deliver them to. Most were easy, but the two professors would be a tad trickier. He'd manage, though.“I have to go. Someone will be grabbing me soon so I can get to the Ministry. Just be careful,” Harry said with a sigh, mind already working on all he had to do today and what he had to handle when he came back. It wouldn't be easy or fun, but he would take care of it.“Fill me in tonight,” Draco told him with a grin, slipping the letters into his robe.“I will,” Harry assured him with a grin. “Right, I have to get out of here. Wait a couple then do what you need to.”After Draco nodded, Harry slipped out, making sure no one could see him then headed towards the dorms as fast as he could. He hoped to be in them when someone came to find him.
Harry was just walking towards his first class when Professor McGonagall caught up to him. It was time, something that had him anxious and relieved at the same time. It meant he could stop many bits in their tracks, but he had a delicate dance to do before he could get it there.
Trying to look apprehensive, he asked, tone containing some wariness, “Is something wrong, Professor?”“Your Solicitor is here, Mr. Potter,” she told him, starting to guide him towards the Headmaster's office. “He says it's important and you need to go to the Ministry with him.” She then vanished Harry's books to the dorm.“Nothing else has happened, has it?” Harry inquired as they moved along quickly, assuming that was one of the first bits people would think to ask.“Not that we've heard, no,” Minerva assured him making certain to send an excuse along to Harry's first class so there wouldn’t be issues. “If it was catastrophic, I'm sure we would know and the DMLE would be here as well.”With a nod, Harry walked beside her, hoping they could manage this without problems or Dumbledore thinking to try and interfere. He was sure Solicitor Piper could manage, but there was always that spanner the old man seemed to have that he liked to toss in.As they walked, Minerva said, quietly, “Tonight, when everything settles down and you have some free time, I would like you to come to my office for a chat.” Quickly, she added, so he wasn't on edge, “Nothing is wrong, of course. I just think we need some time to work out options about what's coming, nothing more. We don't have much time before break and you need to decide how you're going to handle not only living arrangements, but how you want to take on other matters.”Though Harry gave her a nod and told her he would, he was already on edge. Though Professor McGonagall did seem to be the type to ensure her students received the help they needed, she was also so far in Dumbledore's pocket with some matters, he was certain his agenda was coming into play as well. At the least the very start of it anyway. With a tight smile as she stopped at the foot of the revolving stairs that led to the Headmaster's office, she told him, before giving the password, “If you need to talk and feel you can't do so with your friends, my door is always open, Mr. Potter. Remember that. In cases like yours, there is much to work out, some of it very confusing. We also know there are plenty of other areas that are hard to deal with. You can discuss it with me and it'll go no further. Together we can work towards finding a solution you're happy with.”“Thanks, Professor,” Harry told her with a tight smile. Oh yes, he needed to stay wary, that's for sure. Then, with a bit of a shaky breath, he stepped onto the moving stairs and rode up, ready for almost anything, or so he hoped. It was time to take a big damned step and he had to stay alert because of it. Dumbledore was the main reason, but there were plenty of others. He could manage, though, and would.
“Do we have any idea what the hearing today is about, Albus?” Minerva asked the Headmaster after Harry left with his Solicitor. She was concerned, of course, but didn't think it was anything to worry about.
“I honestly don't know,” Albus told her truthfully with a shake of his head. “The only thing I can think of is the emancipation hearing, but that isn't until later in the week. Mayhaps its Madam Bones wanting to discuss it with him before it's time. They wouldn't convene a full hearing for just her wanting information, though. This is one we'll have to wait to see on. Harry should be back this afternoon, I would think. We'll then go from there.”After leaning back in his chair with a tired groan, he was worried. Though someone might be able to push that hearing up closer, he didn't think they could manage it this fast. At least he hoped they couldn't. If they did, he would have way too much to work with he wasn't sure he could take on, not with everything else happening.Rather than speculate, he said, “Molly and Arthur sent off their offer to Harry. He should have received it today. We'll have to see what he says from there. I also quilled a note to both Sirius and Remus about what's happened. When it comes to Sirius, I added our thought on Grimmauld Place. Hopefully, he won't have an issue and will sign the place over. I included, to both, that I thought it would be for the best to have them around for the holidays. It takes no great leap of logic to guess it'll be a trying time for poor Harry. We'll have to deal with the Nick issue, of course, but I'm sure it's not insurmountable.”“Let's see what Harry is like when he comes back, Albus. We need to understand his state of mind before we push for anything. It may take giving him a couple of days. While he's handling what's happened quite admirably, it doesn't mean he doesn't feel something over the mess,” Minerva told him with a sad shake of her head. “The events would be enough to rattle anyone.”“Very true,” Albus conceded. “I'll let you take the point and judge how to handle the whole situation. We'll go from there.”“I'll talk to him tonight and let you know,” she said, standing and smoothing down her robes. “I do have to go. When he returns, I'll meet him at the front doors and we'll go from there.” Seeing a nod from Albus, she swept out to tend to her many duties.Albus sat there and listened to the staircase until it stopped then sighed deeply. This wasn't something he counted on and was worried how badly it would mess up what little of his plans were left in place. He now had to wait on variables he couldn't judge and didn't like it, at all. No, this needed to get moving, fast, and he had to push it. He just wasn't sure how. He would find a way, though, somehow. He didn't care what he had to do, something had to come. With a weary expression on his face, he looked at all that waited on his desk for him to tend to and shook his head. He just couldn't, he was too tired. A short nap was in order then he would do what he could before he was too tired once more. After an exhausted groan, he stood then shuffled off to his quarters planning to rest for an hour or so. Too much was riding on him for more to be allowed. He would manage, just like he always had. It was taking more out of him than he expected was all.
As Harry stepped back through the castle doors, he was pleased. The hearing had gone exactly how they wanted it. Lucius had managed to meet with Fudge and the man was there, pushing for Madam Bones to sign the order. Even if he hadn't, Harry was sure he would have received it anyway. All the questions he was asked were ones he could give a satisfactory answers to. He had the places and means to live on his own. Nick was someone mentioned, but not brought up much. The interview he had given over the summer contributed heavily in his favor as well. So, after a few hours, he was now considered a legal adult and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
While the emancipation took plenty of time and the bulk of the morning, other areas factored in as well. The order to stop Dumbledore from messing in his affairs should have expired when the hearing was over, no matter the outcome. As he and his Solicitor knew the old man wouldn't stop, even with the order, they had it renewed for a year. They could get it renewed each year if he wanted. He didn't think it was needed as the old man was on borrowed time anyway, but it was nice to know it was there as an option.Once they finished in Madam Bones' office, it was almost noon. They weren't done, but they had gone to lunch, meeting Nick. Of course, 'Nick' was pleased with all they accomplished. They had relaxed while they ate and talked over all the other bits they wanted handled and what needed to be done. Once they were finished, he and Piper had gone back to the Ministry to handle other minor matters, such as his estate and getting the marriage license. He had that as well. Once he returned to the Abbey that night, they would fill it out and send it off to Piper to handle from there. Which meant, come that night, they would have as much in place as he could manage before break. Good. The only issues he now had to worry about were what was coming in the castle. He was sure what he was coming back to was bad. Plenty were probably already plotting what they could do to spin him in circles and get him moving how Dumbledore wanted. He also had to worry about those in his house when it came to what their parents wanted. On top of that, everyone else that might be trying to figure out what was going on. So, he had a lot on his plate today and he probably wouldn't be going to class. Though it would put him behind, he was glad he came in as the last class of his day was already in progress. It would give him time to gather himself and tend to other bits.He gave an internal sigh when he saw McGonagall standing there waiting on him. While it was good it wasn't Dumbledore, he still didn't fancy meeting her first as he was aware she was going to push for plenty the old man wanted. However, if she did want to have that talk now that she mentioned before he left, it could work for him as he could state he was tired from all that he had to do. He also did need to hand over some of the court papers to her so it was legal with the school. Those were something he was sure would set off more hell for him. It was best to get it over now, if he could, then press on.“You're fine, aren't you, Mr. Potter? It seemed to take a good long while to finish,” she observed, hoping he would give up some of what went on. Harry had changed plenty, so it wasn't always easy to get him to talk anymore.“It was just long and drawn out,” Harry told her with a sigh. “If you aren't busy, there are parts I need to pass on to you for the records. They're official and need filed so the Board knows what's going on.”“Come to my office and we'll tend to matters,” Minerva told him, motioning her lion to follow. “You can sit and relax a while as I'm sure you'll need it. We can talk a little as well.”“Good idea,” Harry told her, trailing along, already formulating how to handle what was sure to come.
About the normal time they met up each night, Draco was anxious for Harry to show up. He knew what was coming that day, of course, but hadn't managed to find out anything more than what was in the letter he received. Potter had been gone all day and he didn't see him until tea. By then, he couldn't ask, of course, so he was curious. He also wanted to ensure Harry knew he had delivered the letters. On his person were responses from all of them as well, something he needed to pass along.
After finishing one fag, he had just lit another when a noise drew his attention. He was relieved to see Harry coming out when he looked up. Good. Now he could get some answers. He waited until Harry took a seat then asked, “Well? What happened?”After lighting his own fag, Harry relaxed back with a grin then handed over his copy of the emancipation papers. “I got it. No doubt there, of course, but it was still the idea of what might have come. We also managed to get the injunction against Dumbledore extended. It's something we desperately need, honestly. While it won't stop everything he can pull out, it ends the worst of it. Now we just press on the best we can and hope we can dance him in enough circles until he drops dead.”“This is good, Potter,” Draco told him, grinning as he did. “You've stopped tons. Well, the most overt. The covert is the problem.”“I just have to stay alert and do what I can. Nothing to worry about, I'll manage,” Harry told him, taking the papers back when he was done.“We'll have your back as you do,” Draco assured him, reaching in his robes and pulling out the letters. After passing them over, he said, “I managed to get them to everyone and there are the responses. Those of us keeping the closest eye on you have a schedule worked out for it. It'll mostly be me, but the others will help as well, especially between classes and such. Nothing to worry about. Thor and Professor Snape will do what they can as well.”“Good,” Harry smiled, taking the letters and putting them in his robes with the rest of the papers. “We just have to stay alert, nothing more. He's going to pull plenty out as I've backed him into a tight corner. With him not having much time left, we need to worry.”“We have you covered,” Draco assured him then began walking him through all they had come up with to help. As time went on, they would add more if they needed to.
After curfew and Prefect rounds, a very tired Albus was meeting with Minerva and the Weasleys. The topic, of course, was Harry and what came of the hearing at the Ministry. So far, he hadn't heard back from Remus or Sirius, though that wasn't unexpected. So, what he was going to try to do was to get everything in place he could. The hols weren't far off and they needed plans in place as fast as they could manage.
“We'll do what we can, Albus,” Arthur assured him. “Let's see what he says. We haven't received a reply yet, but that's not unexpected considering what he had to deal with today. Once we hear what he has to say on the matter, we'll go from there.”“He did tell me he was planning to spend the break with Nick,” Minerva added quietly, looking around. “While he didn't say much more, he did mention plans. What those are I don't hazard to guess. With all that's happened, I'm sure he does have to spend some time tending to part of this situation. We all know how messy dealing with estates can be, especially if something else comes along that requires tending to. Him now being a legal adult will mean he has to step up and take care of matters he wouldn't have had to until he was actually an adult.”“We can easily make sure he gets where he has to go if that's the case,” Molly assured the both of them. “It's something we'll make certain to pass along as well. And help all we can with what has to be a small mountain of paperwork. It can't be easy tending to that end, even with a Solicitor.”After agreeing with his wife, Arthur asked, looking around, “He managed to get the injunction against Albus extended?” He thought that's the way it sounded, but wanted to make sure.“He did, sadly,” Albus told him, shaking his head. “It won't help matters. As it's magically enforced, it's binding.”“After all we heard about the Dursleys and what was in the paper, I don't blame him, Albus,” Molly huffed, glaring at him. “Don't say it either, Albus Dumbledore! We know it's true by now. This is a case of you've made your bed and have to now sleep in it! We'll do what we can, of course, but if he's this angry with you, it'll taint all we're trying to do to help if he knows you're involved.”“Yes, I've made mistakes,” Albus admitted with a short nod, though he planned to push things the way he needed them. He would just have to stay covert about it.Not wanting to go down that road again, he began to give suggestions, making sure to word them in such a way that it wouldn't violate that order, on how they could manage with the now tricky situation they were in. He needed Harry to at least see part of what was coming his way for anything to work. And he planned to ensure it did. Before the break, he would have another talk with him as well, hoping it would help, at least a little.
