Chapter 66

Again Kathy sobbed loudly as she recognised faces she knew. She couldn�t bring the dead back to life, but she had a damned good try when she came across Tonks body.
She knelt beside the dead girl, crying hysterically, pressing her hands to the side of Tonks� face as she desperately tried to bring her back, hoping against hope that she could force life back into her.

Nothing happened.
She crawled to Remus� body where it lay prone next to his love, the mother of his child. Again she tried, she tried so hard, begging them to live. Again nothing happened and Minerva had to lift her bodily from the deceased woman and lead her away.
�I want to� I can�t take this Minerva. Do you mind if I go to my old rooms, please. I need some time to take all of it in.�
The older witch nodded. �You take as much time as you need dear. My office will be open when you feel like talking. Albus� portrait is up there if you wish to see him. I know he will be delighted to speak with you.�
Kathy slipped outside first, although she�d done no major healing, she still needed to breathe the air, to rid herself of the images before she could rest.
She found the entrance to Severus� office easily. Dropping the wards she entered and looked round the dismal room. It looked as though no one had entered it for months. A thick layer of dust covered everything and she instinctively walked over to Jack and ran her hand over the front of his jar.
Cyclopes sleepily opened his eye partway, it widened when it saw her and blinked madly.
�Hi Jack. It�s been a while.� When she entered her own rooms they were spotless. The elves must have been in while she was gone, but no one had seen fit to change the rooms. They were just as she�d left them. Throwing her coat on the sofa, she kicked off her shoes and headed for the bedroom. She slept for several hours, then found Severus� list.

It took at least another three hours before she�d reduced everything and placed it in the carpet bag he�d charmed for her.
Kathy did go and talk with Albus. He and Minerva confirmed that Severus would have been a free man had he survived, thanks to Harry�s memories. Minerva said the general consensus was that his body had most likely been stolen by a few stray Death Eaters that were still at large, though nothing had been confirmed as yet.
Kathy wanted to tell her he was alive and well, but she needed to speak to Severus first, to let him know that he was safe to return.
�Kathy you don�t need to return to that little house now. You can stay here, help us rebuild, anything. But please, stay with us.�

�I�ll be in touch Minerva, I promise. I just need time to adapt to� all of this.�

Severus was pacing the floor by the time she returned. Several times he�d been tempted to dissolution himself and apparate to Hogwarts so he could find her. He didn�t know if she was in danger, though he couldn�t feel any distress from her.
When she apparated into the living room he pounced on her.

�Where the hell have you been?� He yelled, grabbing her shoulders while his eyes scanned her from top to toe. �I have been worried out of my mind. Why did you take so long?�
�Severus please calm down. I�m fine, I was� everything was crazy when I got there. Voldmo� don�t.� She said as he made to clamp a hand over her mouth. �He�s dead Severus. Voldemort is dead.�

Severus stared at her for a moment, unable to believe what he heard, then he fell back onto the sofa on shock and relief. �So he did it? Potter fulfilled the prophecy.�

�Yep, and there�s more. You are a free man. Harry told everyone that you were working for Albus, he told them about your memories and you�ve been hailed a hero. Severus they think you�re dead. They�re looking for your body. Minerva�s heartbroken, she needs you there, she begged me to stay and help her.�

He looked at her, still trying to absorb the news that Voldemort was dead. Several times he opened and closed his mouth, but no words would come, he was speechless.
�Severus many of your� your friends, they� they didn�t make it.�
Who?�
�Tonks.� She sobbed. �Fred, Rem� Remus. Oh Severus there in the hall. All the bodies. I saw them, all of them, and it�s heartbreaking.�
Severus held her tightly for as long as it took her to cry out her anguish. He didn�t try to stop his own tears as they fell silently onto her hair.
�I brought your things.� She told him in a trembly voice. �Please, get changed and we�ll go together.�
She began removing items from the seemingly bottomless bag, sobbing all the while. �I brought Jack see.� She said as she placed the jar on the mantel, needing to talk about anything other than what she�d seen at Hogwarts. �And Albus wants to talk to you. Well his picture does. I spoke to him Severus, he�s backed up your story, your memories. I think he knows that you�re not d-dead, but he didn�t say so. Severus say something please.�
�I am� stunned. I don�t know what to say. Kathy, I need you to hold me. Now.� He pleaded softly.
She didn�t hesitate, she went to him and he pulled her onto his lap, again holding her close to him, and again letting his tears fall freely into her hair.
�Kathy.� He said once he had himself in control again. �Even after what you have told me, I am not certain of my reception should I show my face at Hogwarts. Even with the truth now revealed, there will be those that will prefer to believe the worst of me. I need time before I go back.�

�Okay. How much time?�

�I don�t know how much time, but I do know that once I return, regardless of the kind of welcome I receive, my time will not be my own for a good while. Kathy when I left you here, just before I Obliviated you, I told you something. I opened my heart to you. And to myself if I�m honest.�

�I know. You said you loved me.�

He drew a breath in through his teeth. �You remember that? I wasn�t sure that you� you told me the same thing in the ROR that day. Do you still feel the same?�
�Yes. I�ve always felt it, I was just afraid to admit it until I thought I wouldn�t see you again. I never stopped loving you Severus. What about you?�

�Oh Gods Kathy, I could not stop loving you if I tried.� He took her left hand and raised it to his lips. After placing a tender kiss on her fingers he ran a finger over the two bands of gold. �Did you even noticed this?� He asked her.
�Yes, but I don�t know where the second one came from.�

�I placed it there after I declared my love for you. I am bound to you Kathy no matter what happens in the future. I am yours, if you will accept me.�
Her eyes, already wet, flowed again as she flung her arms round his neck. �Yes. Yesyesyesyesyes.�
�Then we are one Kathy. As soon as I am able, I want you to undertake a hand fasting with me. Your acceptance of me means we are already, by law married, but I would like us to make it official.�
�We�re what? Are you serious?�

�I am. Are you pleased?�

She nodded, smiling through her tears.
Severus felt himself harden even as his heart melted. They were bonded, no one could come between them now. She was his and he wanted to stake his claim once and for all.
