Chapter 65

“Now that you mention it, that’s where I’ve seen the wand,” Tom nodded after Harry told him what he discovered. “It comes down to how to get it from him now.”
“Shouldn’t be nearly as hard as what it normally would be,” Harry told him with a snicker. “He was winded and looked plenty old yesterday after his walk from the Great Hall up to his office. Doubt it would take too much to defeat him.”“Let me get an exact telling of his condition from Severus then we’ll go from there,” Tom said with a smirk. He then added, quietly, “You’re the one taking him on when it comes to the confrontation.”“He is?” Sirius asked quietly, looking between the two from where he was seated off to the side of the desk, like normal. That was an idea he didn’t like in the least. Albus might not be in the best of shape, but he was still not someone you wanted to fool with. Since they were in the office alone before he and Harry did their normal, he wanted to ask since it wouldn’t give away anything to the usual Death Eaters around.“Tom promised me long ago I would be the one who could do it.” Harry told him, smirking and looking pleased.“If what we know is right, it’ll come down to him doing so anyway,” Tom added, looking at Black. “He’s the Master of Death. I’m sure it’ll come into play when the confrontation happens.”“That as well,” Harry nodded, now curious what it could mean and how it would play out. He then added for Sirius’ sake, “You’ll be by me the whole time, so I doubt it’ll turn out bad. Tom will as well. Between you two and everyone else, as I don’t see this as something which would be a one on one fight, I’m sure it’ll turn out fine.”“True,” Sirius grumbled, still not liking the thought.“It’s not something we can plan on, though. If the fight comes, it’ll just happen. Let’s see if the old man gives us some kind of foreshadowing of what he’s planning. If he does, we can plan it out,” Tom said. He hoped it would be the case as he didn’t like going into anything without the most basic of plans.“Right,” Tom said, straightening up. “Did you get with your Solicitor about the title change for Grimmauld Place?” He asked Sirius. This was something he wanted in place before the hols. Somehow, he had a feeling the break would end up pivotal for plenty. With as short as Albus’ time was, he figured the man would try something.“All sent off and I should get the paperwork back tomorrow. Then Harry has to sign it after I do. Once he does, the house is his,” Sirius told him. He was actually happy to have the old family home going to someone else. It wasn’t something he wanted and it being deeded to Harry would eliminate him having to deal with anything to do with it ever again.“Good,” Harry nodded, looking pleased. “It’ll all be in place for the hols then.” He then told Sirius about the plan to go on Christmas day. When he finished, seeing Sirius about to protest, he added, “We need this. It’ll only be for a couple of hours. All we want is for it to end up clear we were married, something you witnessed, and we’re on our honeymoon. If we get it out there, we’re not going to have as many problems and it will keep the old man spinning in circles, throwing off whatever he’s planning.”Though Sirius didn’t like going back to that horrid house, even for a couple of hours, he understood the why behind it. With a heavy sigh and reluctant nod, he agreed. “Just so it’s only for a couple of hours, no more. I don’t want anything to do with that place.”“No more, our word,” Harry assured him. “It’ll be risky anyway with Tom being there. His disguise and glamour has fooled everyone, but if that old man’s around, though he managed once, not to mention who all else might turn up, we don’t want to chance it for any longer.”“Understood and not something I thought of,” Sirius admitted. He thought he could handle this with Harry around and it only being for a short time. “I’ll have to get you through the Fidelius.”“You already did,” Tom snorted, grinning a tad. Before Black could ask, he explained about the gift for Harry’s birthday. “You already allowed me through.”“Yeah, the stunt rather backfired there, Sirius,” Harry laughed, reaching over to give his godfather a playful shove.“Guess it did,” Sirius grinned a tad sheepishly. “Didn’t think of it at the time.”“Was rather a good gift I appreciated,” Tom told him, looking smug.“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Sirius chuckled, scratching his goatee. While it might seem to plenty a traitorous act, giving away the location and ability to get into Order headquarters, he found he didn’t rightly give a damn. Tom hadn’t used it to his advantage, yet anyway, and with how Albus was, he really didn’t care. Let the old man and some of the others deal with the fallout.“Right,” Tom said, straightening up. “Let’s get to work on some of this. Then you two can do your normal rounds.” Pushing over the papers of the legislation he was working on so Harry could stay caught up, he explained what he wanted and waited for Harry to read it. Once he did, they would go from there.
As they walked around tending to their usual rounds, Sirius told Harry, “Not sure about some of what you have planned, honestly. The bit with Grimmauld Place—that I do and have no problem as long as it’s only for a couple of hours. It’s the thought of you facing Albus in a fight which is bothering me.”
“Don’t let it,” Harry told him, checking over his notes. “You know who trained me. Trust me, I can hold my own against him. With as bad of shape as that old man is in, he won’t stand a chance against me. You’ve not seen him to know the shape he’s in now. Not only is he physically affected, so is his magic. Not sure about the levels, but I’m betting they’re lower than most. Before he goes, he’ll be a squib. He might know plenty of spells, but he’s running on empty and surviving on potions to even get him through the day. There’s no chance in hell he’ll come out on top in a fight with me. Add on the fact I have plenty to help and he won’t win.”“It’s still the idea,” Sirius sighed. “I know what he’s capable of. Well, not all, but I’ve seen him in action. He’s nothing to trifle with, even now. I’m sure there’s plenty he can pull out you won't know about. The same with Tom. That's what has me worried.”“I’m not,” Harry told him, no smug tone involved. He could be egotistical about plenty anymore, but this wasn’t an area he was that way about. “You’ve not seen or dealt with him, Sirius. You heard Snape; he’s only functional because of potions. Even then—they aren't helping much. He looks like an old man and acts like one. I doubt he has a quarter of the magic he used to. Even with that quarter, I doubt it’s anywhere close to effective. Most of it is probably being used just to keep him going, nothing more. His magic is probably the only reason he's alive. While I know to stay wary because of all he plots, this isn’t something I’m overly worried about. If he tries, I have plenty to pull out that will just blindside him, like the fact he's facing me. That should stop him in his tracks and throw him completely off.”He then lowered his voice and added, “Trust me, Tom’s not going to allow it to get too far. He’ll be right there. As I said; I won’t be facing him alone. No one is going to allow it.”“Still,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head.Harry stopped and pulled Sirius into a small room then shut the door, warding it. While he knew who was in the house and where they were, generally anyway, he didn’t want this overheard. When he finished, he said, “Sirius, it’s nothing to worry about. I’m not going looking for a fight with the old goat. If it comes, it’s because he’ll bring it. And we’re sure it’s coming. You’ve heard most of what we know by now. With all we’ve heard, the man wants me to face Tom. With as short on time as he is, it’s coming, fast. He’s not going to end up content to put whatever in place and let it go. It seems like he is pushing for it to come before he dies. I don’t see him trusting to just let it happen. Our feeling is he will have to be there to make sure it plays out just how he wants it. It’s then the confrontation will come. Plenty will be around for it, I’m sure, as Tom isn’t going to let me go this alone. And he’ll have plenty of backup when it comes. It’s then it’ll happen. I’m not playing his game, all there is to it.”After thinking over what Harry said, Sirius gave a soft groan then nodded. “True. Yeah, I think you’re right. It’s just the idea, Harry. He has plenty more experience than you do and knows more magic than most alive. It worries me, a lot.”“I won’t say I’m not concerned about what might come, but I know it is. We have for a long time now. Knowing allowed me to prepare the best we can manage. Tom made sure of it. He trained me personally. You can ask Barty; he’s seen us duel. I held my own, Sirius. If I can hold my own against Tom, someone as weakened as Dumbledore doesn’t stand a chance. Then you factor in plenty, including you, will be around when it happens. It’s not something to worry about, Sirius. I’ll come out ahead, no matter how this plays out.” He then lowered his voice and added, “Tom promised me this a long time ago. It’s my payback for all the hell that man put me through. He made my life a living hell over something he felt was right and truths he twisted to suit his needs. It’s the only measure of justice I’m going to get.”“Understood,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “I don’t like it, but will deal accordingly. Just expect me to be attached to you like there’s a charm on the both of us when it happens. And if it looks like it's going south for you, I’m stepping in. You might want to end it, but I won't allow you to end up in danger over it. It’s my job to protect you and I plan to.”“I wouldn’t expect less of you,” Harry told him with a smile. “And I plan to have you right by my side through all of it.”“Planned for it or not, I’m there, Harry,” Sirius told him with a bit of a grin. “We’ll be like conjoined twins; there won’t be any shaking me.”“More I expected,” Harry chuckled, shaking his head. “Just keep in mind I’m not actively looking to fight the man as in provoking it or attacking. All I’m doing is letting it come naturally.”“That’s fine,” Sirius nodded. “Just so you get in touch and don't go off half-cocked before I get there if I’m not already, like if you’re in school.”“He’s not going to pull anything there,” Harry assured him. “It'll come with him putting me in a position to face Tom. That won’t be at the school as it would endanger too many. He might not be in the best of shape, but he’s not going to pull it there.”“Good,” Sirius sighed. Figuring that was enough, he asked, “What all are we doing today? Anything odd?”“The normal,” Harry told him, holding out his clipboard so Sirius could see. Canceling the charm on the door, he motioned for Sirius to follow so they could get on it. “Only odd bit is I want to check the progress on some of what the elves are doing. They’re still working on parts of the Abbey. I want to check on it.”“Nothing hard then. Good,” Sirius nodded, looking over the list on the clipboard. This would be easy enough that they would keep busy, but not end up overly stressed. Perfect.
After going through the basics of what he wanted to know with Barty, Voldemort leaned back in his chair then nodded. Good. The group was going on like he wanted with all of them improving. They hadn’t been in a real battle yet, so they couldn’t determine if there were issues arising from the problems when it came to a true confrontation, but he was confident they would all rise to the occasion. This is what he wanted.
“We’re as ready as we can get then,” he observed.“Yes,” Barty told him with a smile. “I’ll keep working with them, of course, but they're good to go if you need them. Probably a lot better than the one group we have.”“I think anything is better than that group,” Voldemort snorted, shaking his head. “They have their uses in other ways, so I won’t grouse.”Then he switched the topic to one he had been thinking about. “I’m going to have you start using a glamour the way Titus does. From now on, though we have things to attend to alone, I want Evan to have both you and Titus along for most. Even if I’m there. The time has come we need to worry, Barty. I think Dumbledore might be planning his big finale over the hols. Evan won’t be caught alone if I can at all help it.”“Set up what you need to, let Evan and Titus know, and I’ll be with them at all times,” Barty told Voldemort, straightening up and looking intent. He knew what this job meant and the trust his Lord was putting in him by assigning such a duty. Yes, he would keep Evan safe, even if it cost him his life.“Good,” Voldemort told him, looking pleased. He then said, cryptically, “There is something big being planned over the hols, of a personal nature. You’re one I want to attend. I’m not sure on the rest yet and haven’t talked it over with Evan. You, though, are an honored guest. I know you don’t go anywhere, but I want you around for it. Christmas Eve is when we’re planning for the event.”“I’ll be here,” Barty told him, mind working on what it could be. If it was personal, he wasn’t sure what it could mean, but was highly intrigued by it.With a nod, Voldemort pressed on, “I want you to prepare and help the ones you’re working with to do so as well, to ensure they’re ready at a moment’s notice for whatever might come. I don’t want any of us caught unawares and having to scramble to mobilize. This is important, Barty. Others I have to summon might take a tad longer, but I want those staying here ready to go and to fight.”“It’ll be done,” Barty assured him. “I would suggest a couple drills with you to ensure it as they might be rusty in that area. Maybe pick somewhere and summon them a couple times at random so they get in the habit.”“Easily done and I’ll do so. Just don’t give them any warning,” Voldemort told him.Once he heard Barty’s assurances, he pressed on to any gossip the man may have picked up while working with the groups. Most did focus completely on the task at hand, but some still didn't(, using it to pass information. While it might not help him, he wanted to hear it to stay on top of what was going on.Barty began to rattle off what he had picked up on, but found it hard to focus. His mind was wandering to what could be coming and what it would mean for so much. Highly curious, he wanted to know. Maybe he’d ask Harry. He wasn’t sure there, but he might drop hints to see what came from it.
As Albus shuffled into his office, feeling like he was about to drop, he was trembling madly. For the first time in a while he had left the castle and Apparated. It took every ounce of his energy to manage those simple tasks, something which left him feeling drained and exhausted. Normally he'd have someone else tend to tasks which required such uses of magic so he could preserve his own, but he couldn’t this time. No, what he had to tend to wasn’t legal and he didn’t want anyone else involved or knowing what he did.
After finally making it to his desk and dropping into the chair, he sent for some heavily sweetened tea then pulled out one of the potions Severus brewed for him. After downing it, trying not to gag at the taste, he leaned back with a groan, eyes going shut. While it didn’t give him the energy it would someone who was in good health would have, he felt more alert. Good.He dumped sugar in his tea when it popped in, more than normal to aid in being alert, then began to sip. As he did, he looked around to make sure the paintings weren’t paying close attention. When he noticed they weren’t, being busy talking amongst themselves or out of their frames, he slipped several vials of potions out of his pocket and put them in a secured drawer. These weren’t the kind he could ask Severus to brew. They were the illegal sort, one he had go to through a shadier contact to procure. He had plans which had to play out over the next few weeks. In order to make them work, he needed every ounce of magic he could muster and for him to ensure he was in the best shape he could manage. To do so, he needed a boost in the form of potions he couldn’t get the normal way.Once the drawer was secured, he sighed and shut his eyes. Time was growing shorter by the day and he knew what he was going to take would shorten his time even more, but there was no way around it. Harry had a job to do and he needed to make sure it was completed. So, starting the following night, he would once more implant the visions and keep doing so until he could nudge Harry where he wanted him to go. It meant he now had a standing order for some very illegal potions to keep him going until the final confrontation happened. While he didn’t like the idea, he would go with it as he saw no other way to make this come to pass.Hand trembling, he put down his tea cup then slumped. He was tired, all there was to it. A nap was coming as he wouldn’t manage to stay awake much longer, but he now had the means he needed to push this. Time was of the essence and he knew no other way to go about it anymore. The gentle nudging and information wasn’t something he had time for. While he had everything written up and would have it owled to Harry the day after they left the castle for break, he needed a sense of urgency in the lad only the visions could create. Yes, he would go about it this way.Not opening his eyes, he thought about the letters he had received earlier and tried not to groan. Sirius and Remus—unlike what he thought, they turned him down. When it came to Sirius, there was no leverage to draw him back as he was apparently spending the hols with Harry. His hope was to get Harry to Grimmauld Place one day to let the others work on him. One item did please him, though; Sirius agreed to sign Grimmauld Place over to Harry and was in the process of doing so. Good. It meant Harry would feel like he had a home that didn’t belong to anyone else. While he wasn’t certain how this would play out since Harry was attached to that Nick character, he might manage something there. Well, have others manage something, like Molly and Arthur. He didn’t know yet. As he was too tired to plan right now, it would have to wait until he had some rest.A heavy sigh escaping him, Albus’ chin dropped to his chest. He needed a nap and it would happen in the chair. Even with the potion, he didn't think he could make it to his quarters. Unlike some times now, this would just be a short one. The potion would give him enough energy to just doze for fifteen minutes or so then wake up. Once he had the short nap, he thought he could work out what had to come then poke the right places to ensure it came to pass.As he thought over what had to come, he slipped off into the doze he knew was coming, breath deepening. Yes, he wasn’t long for the world, something Albus knew. Though there was a sense of urgency over so much, he couldn’t fight the toll the curse was taking on him.
