"Or maybe you're just plain wrong," Apollo's tone was defensive as he looked from one to the other.
Roark looked over at his Uncle, meeting his blue eyes. "I honestly wish that we were, Uncle, but you haven't been here. You've not seen, nor have you heard some of the things we've seen AND heard from him. Then there's his continued determination to get Harry and me off Aquaria. He's...changed, and from what we can see, it hasn't been a good change. We received information that those orders to kill Kale, Tristyn, Logan, and Kili did NOT come from Riddle."
"That still doesn't mean it was Ardyn."
"You're right. Apollo, it doesn't," Aiden jumped in when he saw Roark open his mouth in preparation to blast his Uncle even as Harry sat forward in his own chair, emerald green eyes narrowed angrily. "That would be why everyone was so uncomfortable with leaving them here on their own with no further backup than they had. If it's NOT Ardyn, then that meant they had someone close to them that they hadn't been able to identify. It left them open to unclear danger. Unacceptable in our books," he said as he sat on the corner of Roark's desk.
"Though watching you handle that jerk was a real pleasure to see."
Roark's eyes suddenly narrowed as he turned his head to look at the speaker. "You set me up," he exclaimed, his eyes moving around the room with a punishing glare at them.
A sandy brow shot up as he looked at him with amused aquamarine eyes, his lips turning up. "Did we?"
"You did, and you damn well know it, Ryder!" the glare went from punishing to blistering. "Don't you dare think to try and deny it, or to lie about it, Ryder Stranton. I know when I'm being lied to," he turned his head. "Just as Ardyn has been lying to us from the moment we arrived here."
"Of COURSE, you do," he said with a chuckle.
"Which would be why none of us would ever think of lying to you, Demon Imp."
Roark looked over at Robin, who immediately raised a brow of his own as if daring him to respond. Roark gave a deep sigh and sat back in his chair, gazing around the room at the smiling men, before suddenly turning his gaze on Ryder. "I'm not a squirt," he told him before his gaze returned to Robin. "You and your damned tests. Headmaster Dumbledore liked to throw tests at us too. Like clockwork, just before the winter break, and at the end of the yahren {year} semester, the next was more dangerous than the one before it. None of you will ever change, will you?"
"To some of us, you are--"
"Ryder, that's enough," Robin gave his youngest brother a look that silenced him immediately. "And no, Rory, we won't. Dumbledore is too old, and too sure he is always right to change his ways, and you and Harry were not, and ARE not the only ones he liked to challenge with those little tests of his. He has always liked to test those he saw as the brightest, the most powerful, and most determined to go beyond what they were, or were expected to be. Now," he moved to take a seat in one of the chairs before the desk, "tell us what has happened since you sent my brother-in-law and his cousin home?"
Waving everyone to take seats, he reached out for the com pad. "Lex?"
"Here," came his immediate response.
"We have guests. Please join us in our office."
"We'll be right there. Except for Severus. For some reason, he's locked himself in his lab and has placed a 'DO NOT DISTURB' on his com. His door is also shocking the hell out of anyone who touches it."
Deep chuckles sounded around the room as Roark glanced over at Harry, who shrugged. "So, business as usual. Best not to worry too much about it. He'll come out when he's finished with whatever he's working on."
His door slid open to admit Alexei, Desmond, Fili, Jordan, and Tyler, frowns on their faces as they listened to whatever Payton was telling them, while Ethan kept attempting to get a look at Desmond's shoulder, earning him an irritated growl each time he tried.
Finally, he gave up with an exasperated sigh, turning to Tyler, who raised his hand to ward him off. "Don't even think about it, Cousin," came his growl, THEN he saw Kili, his blue eyes widening, then narrowing. "WHAT the FUCK happened to you, Kili Matthew Durin?!" he snapped out harshly "And WHY weren't we told?" he glared around the room.
"Terminator. We'll tell you about it in a bit. There are a few other things we need to talk about first."
"Yes, there are," Roark spoke up, a midnight brow arching. "So, Captain, I trust you haven't made it so I have a few extra reports to fill out?"
Payton grinned at him. "Of course not. We only had a few...words with him."
"Lords of KOBOL, guys, we're FINE. Now leave us alone." Desmond growled, making Roark turn his head, only to chuckle as Robin was now up and trying to look under the bandage, even as Sebastien was trying to look under Tyler's. "Damn it, Rory, it's not funny."
His hands rose in a placating manner. "Hey, I'm not the one Severus insisted remain in Life Center after drugging you both up to the gills with pain meds."
"ROARK!!" came the twin shouts.
Fili chuckled suddenly, seeing the impish look that had entered Roark's silver eyes. "Oh, oh, we're in trouble now. I think our Demon Imp has come out to play." He turned his head to look at Harry. "Is Demon Scamp going to be far behind?"
Harry grinned, an amused look in his emerald eyes. "You never know," he said in a tone that had them all shivering because when Imp AND Scamp came out to play, NO ONE was safe.
"We like to let them out once in a while. Keeps things interesting for everyone around. Sebastien, Robin, Ethan, I suggest you three back off. They really ARE alright, though neither of them will be taking part in the raids we're planning, other than as lookouts, and yes, Kili, that means you as well."
"DEFINITELY means you," Harry growled with narrowed eyes, "so do stop trying to hide behind your brother. You know very well what those raids have become."
Alexei looked around the room, shaking his head in not-quite disbelief. "I guess," he began with a sigh, " we should have expected this. We send the two of you home," he pointed to Logan and Kili, "to protect and keep you safely alive, and what do you do? You turn around and come back, bringing a third of the family with you."
Logan snorted. "It's not quite a third, and like we were going to have a choice after Dad, Uncle Thorin, and our brothers got done with those reports. Then there were those two Terminators." A chuckle sounded. "You should have seen the look on their faces when Uncle Thorin got done telling them about the attack on us in Presidium Square."
Roark shook his head with a chuckle of his own. "Oh yes, THAT I would have loved to have seen. I can just imagine that their looks were priceless."
"Oh...they were."
"Like stranded gapping fish. Then, just as suddenly as the shocked surprise wore off, the fury set in."
"Um...Dad was absolutely furious when they came at us," Kili said. "I was really surprised he didn't set the whole Square on fire...or them, for that matter."
Fili let out a snort. "Someone dared to attack his baby, and in a very public place at that. Stupidity at its highest. The wound, little brother?" he asked, turning to check under the bandage himself.
A frown. "Let my guard down. Got nicked by one of the knives they were using. It's really only a scratch, but the blades had poison on them. That was the real problem. It wouldn't stop bleeding. It was like I was a bleeder, which I'm not."
"And for the record," Logan said in a tight voice, "as I have said before, I DO NOT need to be protected, or kept safe. Neither does Kili. We certainly weren't going to leave you guys here alone to deal with Ardyn and Riddle. As it is, we're gone for three sectons {weeks}, and you two, " he looked at his brother and cousin, "get yourselves shot."
"Like Ki's, they're only grazes. Nothing to worry about."
"Then why would Severus insist you be kept overnight?"
A shrug. "No idea. You'll have to ask Severus when he surfaces as he was the one to issue the order. Logan, Ki, were the two of you and Chris able to find out anything?"
"Well, we found...something. We weren't able to access it though, due to all the protections wrapping the information up tight. Chris said he'd keep working on it, but it's going to take some time. The protections are layered, and they enter connect in some places. If you pull the wrong one, all the others alert him that someone has been looking into his personal accounts since his move here. It's probably going to take more time than we have to get at that information."
"I see," he said as he looked around the room at all the Durin's. "I don't want anyone else dying," came softly as his gaze fell on Dante standing beside Logan. "Far too many have died as it is."
