Chapter 68: Weapons of War
Slipping out of bed, Hermione slid on her robe and slippers. Tom was deeply asleep, with the help of the sleeping potion she had slipped into his tea before bed. His heavy breathing could be heard in the almost silent room. In fact, the majority of the house had been drinking the same tea and was all in a deep sleep. The only person not asleep, beside her, was Peter Pettigrew who was standing guard tonight. She hadn't been able to slip him anything, so she was planning on something else to put him out of commission.
Heading to the main dining room she spied Pettigrew leaning up against the wall. His head was bent down and he was struggling to stay awake. Hermione laughed thinking of how she'd be helping him out with that in just a moment. Quietly moving forward she whispered, "Stupefy" and Pettigrew fell over into a heap on the floor. She hated the ugly rat and would rather do away with him for good. Seeing him fall flat on his face at least made her feel good, even though she knew she shouldn't be so horrid. Hermione was tired of the way he'd been leering at her about the house. She thought her death stares towards him would have given him a clue to leave her alone. But no one ever said that Pettigrew was all that bright.
Hermione opened the doors to the dining room and looked around. No one was there, but the battle plans were laid out on the huge table with full details. There were maps of where the attacks would happen and what Order members would be there. Hermione gasped when she realized what she was looking at. These were not the plans of the Death Eaters; they were the plans of The Order. One of the Death Eater spies had been able to get all of the plans from the other side. She had wondered what had been happening today. As she had wandered by the room earlier, there had been a lot of excitement and loud talking in the room. After that, she had been determined to see what had been causing all of the commotion. Well, knowing exactly what the enemy was planning was cause to celebrate. The only problem she could see was that The Order knew what the Death Eaters plans were. So it looked like both sides had double agents in the enemy camps. Hermione laughed when realizing this oddity. Thinking back to the timeline, she knew that Snape wasn't a double agent yet for The Order, so it was a mystery as to whom the spies were.
She went around the table looking at the various plans. Her heart started beating faster when she saw a plan to attack Malfoy Manor. The Order knew where they were. That meant that Dumbledore knew how to get to her and her son. Why had he not already attacked them? What was he waiting for? Trying not to panic, Hermione knew she needed to step up her own plans. This must also be the reason why Tom had been planning on relocating Narcissa and Draco, along with Hermione and Thomas. He was anticipating the planned attack from The Order. She fell into the nearest seat. Wouldn't that be her bad luck if The Order decided to attack the night she had drugged all of The Death Eaters? For once she hoped that good luck would be on her side.
She jumped up and quickly left the room. She walked to a lower level room in the manor. Inside the room was a very rare sight in a wizarding home. Lining the walls of the room was a variety of swords, axes, knives, and bows and arrows. She remembered when she had first discovered this room many weeks ago. Lucius Malfoy had actually been the one to discover her as she had been investigating the manor. Lucius had explained to Hermione how his great, great, grandfather had enjoyed using the Muggle weapons of war to "liven" up his socializing with his enemies. Ever since then, all Malfoy men had been trained in how to use all of the weapons. Lucius was planning on training his son Draco at the age of six, when he had first started learning how to shoot a bow and arrow and throw a knife.
Hermione looked over all of the weapons deciding what she wanted to take with her. Even though her wand was her favorite weapon of choice, it would be a surprising move to pull out a sharp blade and slice someone's leg or possibly throat. This was war after all. She needed to do whatever she could to put her at an advantage over an enemy. The number one thing she had learned from Tom and his Death Eaters about fighting was that you don't use weapons to fight, you use weapons to win. It all came down to intent. Hermione wished that she had learned this earlier in her life. She had been very timid, even in her fifth year during the times of training with Dumbledore's Army. Frankly she had more reasons in her life to win now. She'd spent time learning how to survive and defend herself against an attack. Tom had pounded into her head that if you wanted to learn to defend yourself, you needed intelligence, balance, and precision. She was a better duelist now than she had ever been during the war as a young teen.
Hermione walked along the wall eyeing each weapon. She knew she'd need something that she could conceal easily, but be able to draw out at a second's notice. The first thing she took off the wall was a 5-inch, double-edge- blade boot knife. She'd been only wearing sturdy boots the past few weeks. This knife would hide easily in her boot along with the holding strap tied around her calf. If she ever lost her wand, or had it taken from her, she'd have this for backup. Walking further along the wall she then saw an automatic switchblade. This could be concealed easily and opened fast when needed. She had practiced with this one day and was surprised at how fast she had become using it. None of the other weapons would be feasible to use, especially if she had the baby in her arms or tied on her back. Hopefully if it came to being attacked, Thomas would be safely tucked away with Narcissa or a house elf. Tom needed her to help fight this war. Anyhow, if she had a chance to help take down Dumbledore, she wasn't going to miss out on that opportunity.
Smiling, she hugged her knives to her chest feeling a little better about the upcoming battles. Hopefully Lucius wouldn't find that these were missing right away and suspect her. Closing the door to the room, she walked softly up to her chamber. As she slipped inside, she checked on Thomas who was still fast asleep. Hermione hid her knives in a hole hidden behind a loose brick in the fireplace. She shrugged off her robe, and kicked off her slippers then got into bed. Tom didn't even stir. His back was to her as she reached out to run her hands up and down his back. He gave a big sigh in his sleep. She felt no guilt at all that she had drugged him or the others. None of them had been getting a lot of sleep, and this would do all of them a world of good. She snuggled up to her man lacing her arms around Tom's torso. Closing her eyes, she fell fast asleep as if she had also taken the drug laced tea.

It had been a long night at the Potter house. Baby Harry had been up with a fever and his Mum hadn't gotten more than an hour's sleep. Lily lay on the couch holding Harry who had finally fallen asleep. She'd almost floo called Madam Pomfrey to come and take a look at him, but finally she'd gotten Harry's fever down. Now she was absolutely exhausted.
It would have been nice to have James around to help take a turn staying up with the baby. Sadly, they had not spoken since he'd been there a few weeks ago. They sent each other a few notes, but nothing had yet been resolved. Lily knew that she needed to forgive her husband. She wished that she had Hermione to talk to about what had happened. It was hard not having another women that she could trust with this problem.
She closed her eyes and started drifting away when she heard someone coming through the floo. Opening her eyes, she watched Sirius walk out and brush off the soot. He also looked tired and she wondered what he had been doing last night. Without saying a word to Lily, Sirius plopped down into an empty chair and sighed.
"What's wrong Sirius? You look as tired as I feel." Lily rubbed Harry's back as he stirred and whimpered in his sleep.
Sirius looked over at her like he'd just noticed her. "What happened here last night? You look terrible."
Lily laughed, "You really know how to flatter a lady don't you Padfoot? Harry was sick all night and neither of us got much sleep."
"Is he well?" Sirius sat up with concern. "Do we need to call for Madam Pomfrey?"
"No, his fever is down and he's resting now. I'm more concerned with what's bothering you." Lily sat up still cradling Harry against her.
"I know what The Order is planning on doing." Sirius leaned forward with his head in his hands. "I know where Hermione and Thomas are."
Lily shook her head, "I don't understand what you're trying to say."
Sirius looked up, "Dumbledore is planning an offensive move against Voldemort and his Death Eaters who are all staying at Malfoy Manor."
Lily stared at him because she knew what this meant; Hermione and Thomas were in danger. "What do we do Sirius? How do we let her know she and Thomas could wind up in the middle of a grand scale attack from The Order?"
Sirius ran his hands through his long hair. "She probably already knows."
"What do you mean?" Lily asked trying to hold back her shock.
Sirius came over to sit by Lily on the settee. "Dumbledore found out that a spy from the Death Eater's camp stole the battle plans. The funny thing was he didn't act that angry about the whole bloody mess."
Lily was puzzled, "So you're saying that Dumbledore wanted the other side to know what they have planned? That makes no sense whatsoever."
"That's what I was thinking too. Why let someone from the other side know what they plan on doing? Why give them that advantage?" Sirius gave a great sigh and shook his head.
Lily shifted Harry to her other arm, "You need to go back to headquarters and try to find out more. You have to go with them when they attack the manor." Harry started crying as Lily's voice rose with her plea.
"Promise me Sirius that you'll protect Hermione and Thomas."
Sirius smiled, "To be honest Lily, I don't think that Hermione needs protection from anyone. I think its Dumbledore that will need the protection if Hermione get's her hands on him again."
Lily laughed and she bounced Harry in her arms, trying to calm him down. "Keep an eye on James too." Her smile faded now. "Even though things aren't back to normal, I still love him."
Sirius nodded, "I know Lily. I'll do my best. But, you promise me that you won't leave the house and that you'll change the wards once I leave."
Lily snickered, "You're starting to sound like Hermione. I promise with all of my heart to stay put. Is that good enough for you?"
Sirius stepped towards her and gave her a kiss on the forehead. "Wish me luck." He left not expecting a response.
Lily dropped back onto the settee. "I think we all will need a lot more than luck to survive what is coming our way." She looked down at her now sleeping infant. "Especially you Harry James Potter. You are not going to grow up without me this time. " Harry squeaked in his sleep. "Glad to see you agree with your mum."

Dumbledore closed the door to his study putting up locking and silencing spells. "Tonight is when we plan to attack. There will be no mistakes. You have one mission to accomplish."
"We know Albus. You've gone over it a thousand times." James huffed as he crossed his arms. "Any how, we've taken the cursed Unbreakable Vow with you, so what else would we do?"
"I want it done as soon as we get to the manor before Hermione has time to escape with her brat." Dumbledore pounded his fist on the desk making the three other men in the room jump. "The Dark Lord's son needs to die."
Hiding in the corner under James's invisibility cloak Sirius Black almost fell over. Hermione was in love with Voldemort and had borne his son? The revulsion flamed up in his gut. He couldn't believe that she had chosen the dark wizard over him. Maybe she had been under the Imperius Curse? Gods! There had to be a reason why the women he loved was in love with one of the most evil wizards that had ever lived. It only made him more determined than ever that he would get there first, save Hermione and Thomas, and take them far away from the Dark Lord.
