Chapter Seven
.
Harry smiled as he looked down at his godfather. Sirius had been sleeping soundly for over a day while Madam Pomfrey ran several tests on him to insure that he was indeed okay. Harry hadn't once left his godfather's side.
James had remained in the infirmary the entire time, as well. He and Harry talked very little-both mainly concentrated on the sleeping man that they loved so much.
"When do you think he'll wake up?" Harry asked when Madam Pomfrey entered the room.
"Mr. Potter, you have already asked me that question how many times?" the nurse asked.
"Sorry," Harry mumbled.
"It's okay. Why don't you go eat dinner with your friends?" Madam Pomfrey suggested.
Harry shook his head. "I want to stay here with Sirius."
Sighing, the nurse walked back into her office.
Later that night, Harry was sound asleep in a chair that he had pulled up to Sirius' bed. James, however, was wide-awake. He couldn't stop thinking about everything that Remus had told him about his beloved husband.
"James?" Sirius mumbled weakly. He blinked several times and then continued to look at James curiously. "Where am I?"
"You're awake!" James exclaimed. "Thank Merlin. How do you feel? Should I go get Madam Pomfrey?"
Sirius looked up with amused eyes. "I'm okay, but I'm really confused. Where am I? And why are you here? &;I m;I mean, you're "
James slowly shook his head. "I'm not dead, Siri. It's a long story that I'll tell you when you're feeling better."
"I'm feeling perfectly fine," Sirius replied. "I want to understand what's going on."
James sighed and glanced over at his son who was still sleeping.
Sirius followed James' gaze and couldn't help but smile when he saw Harry.
"Do you remember being rescued from behind the veilamesames finally asked.
Sirius paused and then shook his head. "I don't think so. Unless wait a minute. You saved me?"
James nodded.
"I thought that was a dream," Sirius mused. He rubbed his forehead and sighed. "Harry was there, too. And Remus and Dumbledore, right?"
"Yes," James replied.
"How did you save me?"
James quickly explained everything to his husband.
"You did all of that for me?" Sirius asked.
James looked down at Sirius sadly. "I'd do anything for you, Siri. I love you."
Sirius looked thoughtful. "How are you here? Didn't you die that night?" he asked slowly.
James shook his head. "No. Lily died, but I was thrown into some kind of dungeon or prison."
Sirius sat up and just stared at James. "What? For how long?"
"Until just recently," James replied quietly. "A deatheater helped me escape."
Sirius raised his eyebrow curiously.
"Normally they would appear about once a day to give me water or bread or something small to eat," James mumbled. "They never talked to me until "
"Do you know who it was?" Sirius asked.
James scowled. "Pettigrew."
"He saved you?"
"Yes," James answered. "I don't know what to make of it."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that, James," Sirius said softly. "It's hell to be imprisoned."
James flinched and leaned forward slightly. "Siri, I tried to escape so many fucking times, but it wasn't possible. If I had been able to if I'd been strong enough to escape then I could have saved you. Gods, how did you ever survive? I'm so sorry, Siri. You would never betray me."
"No, I wouldn't," Sirius said quietly. "I'm not sure how I survived to be honest. I think the dementors loved me."
James wiped several tears out of his eyes. "Siri, gods, I'm so sorry! That should never have happened to you. I just wish I could have done something to-"
James stopped speaking when Sirius sat up and wrapped his arms around James as tightly as he could. James returned the embrace and clung to Sirius.
"I'm just so sorry," James murmured. &;"Th;"That should never have happened."
"Stop apologizing," Sirius replied. "It wasn't your fault. I'm sorry for what happened to you, James."
James pulled away slightly and stared into his husband's beautiful blue eyes. "Siri, how can you even talk to me after the way I treated you? I was a fucking bastard to you. Gods, I'm so sorry! Can you ever forgive me?"
Sirius pulled James into his arms once again and closed his eyes. "I forgive you."
"You do?" James asked, surprised. "But, Siri, I was horrible to you!"
"Not necessarily horrible. Anyway, you were going through a lot then, too."
"That's no reason for the way I treated you, Siri. I should never have ignored you and been so cruel to you. I love you so much, Sirius. I'm just so sorry for everything. I was a complete bastard."
Sirius almost laughed. "Yeah, so you were sometimes. I should have been more understanding, too, James."
James lifted his head and looked at Sirius while shaking his head. "Siri, it was all my fault. I'm the one who should have been more understanding."
"James, please stop berating yourself over this," Sirius said. "You did hurt my feelings, but I also was a bit selfish back then."
"No, you-"
"Let me fi. &n. I know I was. And maybe I am letting this whole thing go too easily, but the thing is, I've missed you for too long, James. I had years to sit in Azkaban and dwell on everything bad that happened. And then I was on the run, and fucking hell, had I known you were alive, I could have saved you!"
"Siri, you had no way of knowing. I was completely concealed."
"Whatever. I should have saved you. I spent those two years thinking about you and Harry. What I'm trying to say is, I've had long enough to think about everything that went wrong. If we're both here again, then I want to be happier because I honestly can't even remember what it's like to be completely happy."
James looked at Sirius with tears in his eyes. "I love you," he said again as he embraced his husband.
"And I love you," Sirius replied as he clung to James. He simply couldn't believe that his beloved husband was actually alive again. There was no way in hell he was going to dwell on their mistakes of the past. He desperately wanted to spend time with those he loved and build happy memories with those special people. He'd had far too much pain in his life
"Siri!" Harry exclaimed, waking from a deep sleep.
Sirius broke away from James and tightly hugged his godson. "How long have you been awake? Why didn't you guys wake me up? Merlin, I had a dream you both were talking."
Sirius just laughed while James sat back with a smile on his face. He still had one very important question to ask his husband, but he wasn't going to do that with Harry in the room. He'd wait until later. In the meantime, he couldn't believe that Sirius had forgiven him. James knew one thing, though-he would never hurt Sirius again. Never. He loved him far too much.
