CHAPTER 7
1996
(the next day)
Hermione
was totally confused. No, no, no, she wasn’t confused about her feelings
regarding Draco, their new ‘situation’, or the thing about the mirrors.
No. None
of that.
What she
did was confused about was the question when exactly during this whole
ordeal she had turned into a blushing ninny. At this moment she and Draco were
paired up to brew a potion in Potions class and even asking him to pass the salt
made her face break out into a fiery shade of red. Why was it so hard to talk to
him now? She never used to act like some stuttering idiot, and quite frankly she
didn’t like it one bit. She always had been good with words and was known to be
comfortable around boys. Hell, her two best friends were male, so why was she
acting like some girly girl all of the sudden? Draco reached for the onions and
semi-casually brushed Hermione’s arm in the process. She shivered at his touch.
He noticed and he smirked.
“Damn bastard,” she thought, but couldn’t stop a smile forming on her own
lips.
“Would the Head Boy and Girl please stop acting like a couple of Nifflers
on heat!” professor Snape sneered. “There is work to be
done.”
Hermione
was sure all the blood in her body had run towards her face when all heads
questioningly turned towards her and Draco. She noticed that Harry and Ron were
staring at her with a mixture of shock and wonder on their faces. She looked
back at them and gave them a ‘what’s he talking about?’ sort of look. She sighed
in relief as they seemed to buy it and continued to work on their potion. She
casually looked at Draco, who seemed to be trying to hide a smirk. She might
have some difficulty talking to him, but she realised she would have no problem
kissing that smirk right off his face. Suddenly she had to force her face not to
break out in one too.
After
potions she, Harry and Ron were making their way towards the Great Hall for
lunch. She was lingering behind a bit, clumsily fumbling with her bag when
suddenly she felt a hand clasping around her wrist. She was pulled backwards and
before she was given the time to even put up a fight she found herself pulled
into a broom closet. The door closed, leaving her shrouded in darkness. Her
heart was racing. It was pitch black and the air was thick and hot. Before her
mind was given the time to process what the hell was going on she found a set of
lips gently pressing against her own. Draco. Her body relaxed immediately at the
welcome intrusion. She stepped closer so she was pressed up against him so she
could feel the warmth and firmness of his body. She
ran her hand through his hair, loving the feel of it. She had wanted to touch
it’s silky-smooth texture all day.
It
was even softer then she had imagined. He had
actually left his hair jell-less today, something he’d never done before. He
must have caught on she didn’t like it during the days he saw her watching
him... and he changed it. He actually changed something about himself for her.
Did he know how this little gesture made her feel? How it made her heart swell,
threatening to explode?
She felt him trace her bottom lip with his tongue. She slightly parted her lips,
giving Draco permission to go further. Having no experience in this whatsoever,
she was planning to let him take the lead in this so she could mimic what he was
doing. Why weren’t there any books on kissing techniques? Why? She would
feel a lot more relaxed having been properly prepared for this. She gasped as
she felt him catch her tongue with his. She always thought she had a good idea
what a French kiss would feel like, but she concluded that it felt rather
different than what she had expected. But not in a negative way. His
caress was gentle, waiting for her to respond, and she answered his caress
almost
automatically.
Wow.
Definitely not in a negative way!
She
moaned at the feel of the kiss deepening; their tongues sliding heatedly against
each other. She pressed her lips harder against Draco’s in an attempt to deepen
the kiss even further. She didn’t really know what she was doing, but at that
moment her natural instincts seemed to do most of the thinking. And judging by
Draco’s appreciative groan, Hermione’s natural instincts were doing a fairly
good job at that. The passion of the kiss increased. Their bodies pressed more
firmly against each other, as if they would be able melt together if they got
close enough. After a few moments they were forced to break the kiss; both being
in dire need for oxygen.
“Hi,” Hermione panted, not really knowing what other words to
form.
“Hi,” he responded with a chuckle and she could feel his warm breath
against the sensitive skin of her lips. “That should be about suffice to get us
through lunch wouldn’t it?”
Hermione
laughed and let go of him so they could get out of the closet in time before
anyone grew suspicious of their absence.
“Perhaps” she replied. “But I might need a little pick-me-up before
dessert.”
He
smirked (not that she could see it because it was so dark, but she just knew he
was) as he opened the door and carefully took a peek to make sure no one was
there. He fully opened the door, stepped into the hallway and offered a hand to
help Hermione out. He had this look on his face as if he didn’t quite know who
to laugh at for blushing so vigorously: Hermione or himself. Hermione mused that
she probably had about the same look on her face too.
“You go first” he said. “I’ll follow in a few
minutes.”
She
smiled and nodded. She turned around to leave when suddenly she found herself
overcome in a feeling of unfinished business. Like when you’re leaving on
vacation and you have this inexplicable feeling that you’ve forgotten something
but don’t know what. But in this case, Hermione did know what she had left
behind. She turned back around, wrapped her arms around Draco’s neck and
engulfed him in another kiss.
“‘Suffice
to get us through lunch’ my ass!” she thought.
So
in one day she went from goody-two-shoes who had never been kissed to girl being
thoroughly snogged in a closet and in a public hallway.
“Interesting”
she mused as she let go of Draco and toddled off to lunch.
*
That evening
both Draco and Hermione met in their common room. Mission: lifting the
spell. Even though this whole thing
was about to be over and done with, she realised she’d never look at Draco the
same way again. He was right about wearing masks. He wore one, she wore one, and
Harry and Ron probably had their own set too. She wondered what they were like
underneath them. Would they be much
different? They were her best friends and it could be very possible she didn’t
know them at all. But she figured it didn’t matter, they would always be her
friends no matter what secrets they hid. Or wouldn’t they? Would they still want
to be her friend if they found out she’d been fraternising with the enemy? Would
she even tell them? Not yet, she decided.
Not
yet.
“I can only lift the spell on my side” Draco explained. “Only the person
who casts the spell can lift it.”
“Oh.”
“Well, at least I wont be ogling you anymore.”
“That’s not fair then is it?” Hermione said.
Draco
shrugged.
“Leave it up,” Hermione said decisively.
“What?” Draco uttered in surprise.
“That way we can both see who’s looking and when. It wouldn’t be right
otherwise.”
“Are you sure?” Draco enquired.
“Yes,” Hermione said with a slight smile.
So they
were going to have to sleep next to each other, both fully known of the other’s
presence. This was going to be awkward, Hermione mused.
*
“Now this is rather odd, isn’t it,” she said as she snuggled herself
under the covers. She looked at Draco who was propped on his elbow and looking
back at her. Suddenly she was hit with an instant flash-back of last night. Him
lying there next to her; looking mind numbingly gorgeous as the moonlight was
reflecting on his pale naked skin and the shadows were accentuating every curve
and every muscle of his body. She felt the blood rushing to her cheeks again and
just wanted to hide her face under her pillow; not that this action would be a
very subtle solution.
“Yes, I was getting quite used to sleeping naked,” he said
sarcastically.
“No one’s stopping you,” she replied jestingly. That boy was not going to
lift a finger to make things less awkward for her, so why should she?
He arced
an eyebrow.
“Really?” he said and started pulling his shirt over his
head.
Hermione’s
eyes widened.
“Draco no!” she shrieked. “I was only kidding!”
But he
didn’t listen and kept stripping himself from his clothes.
“Draco,
I’m serious! *Draco!* DRACO!!!”
