Chapter 7: In which a declaration of love is made
The night after they were at the apothecary
Severus sat up suddenly, his right hand searching for the wand under his pillow. He was a light sleeper, it had come in handy in the past.
A heartbreaking moan filled the air.
What was that? It sounded like someone being in great pain. And it came from the adjourning room.
The boy.
Riddle!
Damnation.
Not taking the time to grab his robe Severus sneaked soundlessly to the door connecting their chambers. Whoever HE had sent, they had to be very skilled. The wards he had put around these two rooms were very strong.
He pushed the door open.
The little room was dark.
He scanned it ready to dodge every curse flung his way. His body shield was glimmering in the cold night air.
Nobody was in the room but a whimpering, moaning body hopelessly entangled in the sheets and battling with invisible demons. Severus lowered his wand.
A nightmare. The boy had a bad dream; there was no real danger.
He tugged some of his hair behind one ear and slid on bare feet over to the bed. The adrenalin is his vein was no longer as potent and he began to feel the late (or early?) hour. The whimpering had grown louder and was interrupted by little NO!'s. Suddenly the body arched up and the mouth opened in a soundless shriek captured limbs desperately pulling on the folds that restricted them. But the young man didn't awake.
Severus watched it silently and then decided to interfere. The little nuisance would manage to strangle himself with his luck.
What the horrible dream hadn't managed, a touch on the shoulder did easily.
Green, troubled eyes opened wide and stared unseeingly back at the potions master but the awareness crept back.
Next thing Severus knew that he had a smaller body all over him and slightly muscled arms were thrown around his neck. Harry was now sobbing openly.
This was definitely a new situation for the older man.
And one he could have done without. He now fully understood why Lucius regularly fled his family home when his wife was on her monthly. There was nothing appealing about tears soaking the skin and sniffling against his ear.
This had to stop.
Now.
He doubted that his first idea (scolding) would help much so he tried to calm the black haired down. With the success that the wretched boy sobbed even louder.
Ok, let's try something different. But what?
"At least I don't have any nightclothes I have to change after this display of a waterfall en miniature."
THAT got him the younger ones attention. A gasp and the next moment a very red in the face Harry was back in his bed and staring up to him.
"If this little drama is over now, I want to get back into my bed. I feel cold." With his head high he prepared to exit the small room but in the last moment he stopped. "What was the dream about?"
Another sniff. "I don't know."
"You don't know?!?"
"Hm, no. Just that there is a lot of green light, someone is screaming and I hear an insane laughter. Not always in this order. I have this dream quite often and I don't know what it means. Vernon was always furious when I woke him up with my screaming." A pillow was desperately clutched to his chest and the fear on the young face was very clear.
"Green light."
"Yes. It is horrible."
Snape had closed his eyes for one moment. "Try to go back to sleep."
He left the door half open.
Another morning had broken at Snape manor and the wizarding inhabitants were at breakfast. Severus fully clothed for the day and nipping on his tea and sometimes on his buttered toast. He never ate more in the morning and now he was mainly keeping Lucius company. The blonde man was devouring his food with gusto. But his eyes were fixed on the figure behind his friend's chair. He actually stared and his forehead was wrinkled in deep thought.
Harry still wasn't sure what had happened the night before but his now constantly heated face whenever he looked ant his master. Severus' smirk whenever he saw him made him really uncomfortable.
And what was Mr. Malfoy up to with all his staring? After a while Harry stared back with aplomb and not a small portion of hurt dignity. He was no zoo animal, honestly!
Severus finished with the Daily Prophet and, following Lucius' stare, turned around to view his servant.
"What are you doing?"
The boy was surprised. Wasn't that obvious? "Looking at Mr. Malfoy."
"Quit it, it isn't polite." He turned around again and taped his fingertips disapprovingly at an article he found particularly ridiculous.
"But he stares at me too!"
"That's something different altogether."
Harry knew better then to talk openly back but he couldn't prevent a soft: "I don't think so." to escape him.
Lucius decided that a change of topic would be a good thing.
"Have you met someone interesting the last evening? Where have bee been by the way?" He chewed on his sausage.
"At Violett's," Harry answered the question and Lucius nearly chocked, the next piece of sausage on for fork stopped in midair. He stared accusingly at an indifferent Severus who pointed at the fork.
"I don't mind your choice for food at eight in the morning but would you please cease swinging the greasy thing in front of my face?"
The blond shrugged and continued eating. It was no use fighting with Severus. The last piece of bacon disappeared in his mouth and he cleaned his hands on the napkin.
"Apropos interesting encounters: Harry, what where you taking about with Mr. Riddle last night?" While stating this question Severus served some tea to his friend.
The boy was clearly startled but with all the things he didn't knew about witchcraft... It never came to him that Riddle might have spoken about their conversation. "How do you know master? I haven't seen you."
"Not surprisingly. You will answer my question in time, I hope?"
"He questioned me about my surname and so on. I didn't know why he bothered."
"Knowing you like I do I presume you told him exactly that?"
The dimple on the servant's skin made an appearance. Laughter made green eyes sparkle. "Well, yes. I thought that you wouldn't mind if I was a little insolent to him." Harry was happy to see his master's lips twitch. "I told him that I don't, that was Ok, yes?"
Another nod of approval.
The servant bit down on his lower lip and wrinkled his nose, there was something about this that worried him. "It's not that I know much about my family, Vernon never told me anything. So it wasn't a real lie."
Another piece of toast was slowly devoured while the boy was caught in his thoughts.
"I don't like to lie."
"No?"
Lucius followed the little conversation and had to hide a smirk behind his cup of tea. He couldn't guess why Severus would encourage the boy when he avoided other people like the plague.
The attention of his master made Harry chatty. "No master. Well, a little white lie now and then when it is important but generally I don't do it. But lying is better than getting bashed so I did it to avoid Vernon's wrath. But I wouldn't think of betraying someone I love, that would be sin, wouldn't it?"
"You are asking the wrong person boy. I cannot remember loving someone so I cannot give you counsel on that."
Harry was baffled. "But there must have been someone in your life to love? He continued rather naively: "I don't love easily myself. I loved my tutor and I think I must have loved my mother though I cannot remember her. Well, and there are you, of course."
Lucius spitted his tea across the table and had difficulties to breath. Some of the liquid had gotten into the wrong pipe.
"Come again?" Severus himself sounded rather startled.
"I-I told you that I love you."
Before Snape could say something vile Lucius sat his teacup down with force and declared that he would leave them alone to buy a nice present for his wife. He left, still shaking his head. Neither of them seemed to care much.
His departure gave Severus time to compose himself. "Well, that's nice to hear but not very advisable. And I don't think that it is wise either."
Silence.
The servant thought that he should take a leaf out of Lucius' earlier strategy and poured more tea as a distraction. At his master's wink he added a hint of lemaon but no sugar.
"Thank you." The potions master had to bite back a smile (unheard of expression on his face) about the others surprise. "I can be polite. Most of the time I chose not to. It is tiring and people you loathe never end a conversation if you don't give them cause. You can sit down. At my feet."
Harry promptly did as he was told.
"Given the tendencies of this day I shudder to think about what would happen if I set a foot out of my front door. No, I think you should entertain me a little bit."
Entertain. With what for goodness sake, Harry was wondering and it showed.
"Your eh- unspoilt and fresh insights on life always amuse me. Tell me about your past."
