The first sign of trust
Later that evening she sat huddled in the library. No one was there at this time of night and Thea was glad for the privacy. She flipped through the book in front of her with her left arm, her right cradled in her lap. She had finally found a spell for the healing of bone, but she was seriously concerned that she might not be able to cast it in her present state.
She knew now that her wrist was definitely fractured. The pain was so bad that her head was throbbing and her vision would sometimes fade in and out. She knew she couldn't cope with this amount of pain, and that if she went to Madame Pomfrey she would have to explain what had happened. She couldn't even claim she had fallen, as this type of fracture was caused by the application of large amounts of pressure. No, she couldn't go to the hospital wing.
Closing the book Thea rested her head upon it, careful not to jar her right arm. She could go to Dumbledore, but Thea knew that he would insist on knowing who had done such a thing. She could refuse to tell of course, but Thea knew Dumbledore would work it out, and she couldn't risk getting Malfoy in any trouble. Especially not now.
Suddenly Thea jerked her head up, being rewarded by a nauseating wave of dizziness. Professor Snape. He could help her. She was sure that he would be able to treat her injury, and be able to keep quiet. Although Thea had suspicions about where his true loyalties lay, she was almost completely sure that he was aware of whom the Malfoys associated with, and she had noted that he often played down the acts of Malfoy. If anyone would keep silent about what Draco had done to her, it was Snape.
Thea frowned, but it was still so risky. At that moment red hot pain shot up her arm, and as if in reply, Thea stood up and started out of the door, heading for the dungeons and Snape's office.
Thea took a few deep breaths before knocking on Snape's door. When there was no answer at first Thea's heart sank as she thought maybe he wasn't in there, and she had no idea where his private chambers were.
Her head hung forwards slightly. Maybe she would have to risk a self-healing after all.
But then the door swung open in front of her and Thea jerked her head up.
'Miss.Carter.' Snape spoke in a voice with no hint of surprise, dee the the fact she was knocking at his door at 10.00 in the evening.
'Professor.' She spoke, her voice slightly breathless due to the pain.
'I need your help with something.'
He stared at her for a moment, his long hair falling over his face, almost completely covering his eyes.
'Come in. Take a seat by the fire.'
Thea obeyed, walking smoothly so as not to hurt her arm. She lifted it carefully to hold across her chest as she lowered herself into the chair. Snape was watching her carefully but remained silent as he took a seat.
Thea cleared her throat.
'I had an accident and I've fractured my wrist. I'm too weak to heal it myself due to the pain. I was wondering if you would help me.'
Snape's face remained completely impassive.
'Why have you not gone to the hospital wing?'
Thea sighed. She was hoping he wouldn't have asked questions, but part of her knew that he would.
She lifted her head and looked him in the eye.
'Because I don't want to cause any trouble.'
Snape nodded, and then abruptly stood up.
'I will heal it for you.' He spoke as he moved to the wall, tapping it with his wand and taking potions from the hidden compartment there.
'But you must tell me exactly what happened.'
Thea did. She spoke in a neutral voice, which trembled ever so slightly when she told how she had been pinned helpless on the bed. Snape meanwhile knelt in front of her, tending to her wrist and occasionally stopping her so she could drink a potion. His face was deceptively blank.
'And so I thought you were the best option.' Thea finished, staring at his dark, slightly greasy hair.
Snape nodded. 'I've given you something for the pain, and something to mend the fracture. You're lucky it wasn't more severe, or you would have had to drink that ghastly tasting Skelegrow.'
Thea nodded weakly.
'You will have to stay longer so that I can treat these bruises though.'
Thea looked down at her wrists. The left was covered in small, fingertip sized bruises, and her right was simply covered in a huge black-purple bruise, fading to a yellow around the edges. She winced at the sight of it.
Snape looked up into her eyes.
'He hurt you quite badly.'
Thea didn't answer. What was she supposed to say?
She watched him for a while as he held his wand to her skin, his lips moving as he wove his spell. She stared at his face instead of the gradually fading bruises. His eyes were black slits, his mouth looking soft now that it was moving; not the hard line she saw in class. His face was infact quite pleasant in a harsh way; lots of lines and angles, but nice. Handsome.
Thea stifled a yawn. Who knew? She thought as she rested her head against the back of the chair and gradually fell asleep.
When she awoke it was to the presence of someone leaning over her. Instinctively she brought up her arms to cover her face and let out a little cry.
'Miss.Carter.' A familiar voice intoned. 'Thea, you're all right. It's professor Snape.'
Thea lowered her arms and looked dopily around her, she seemed to be taking an unusually long amount of time to fully awaken.
'It's the potions I gave you.' Snape said as if reading her mind. 'It will make you very drowsy. You should go back to your dorm and sleep it off.'
Thea nodded weakly, making a vain attempt to stand. She swayed slightly and felt Snape circle an arm around her waist for support.
'Thank you.' She murmured, before looking up at him and holding his gaze.
'I mean for everything. Thank you for all your help, and for being willing to help me.'
Snape merely nodded, his eyes hooded as he gazed down at her. Suddenly it seemed to Thea that with his eyes staring into hers and his arm around her waist, this was too intimate. She straightened, steadied herself and carefully moved away. He of course, let her go. And she felt silly to be so embarrassed around a member of staff. She very much doubted Snape saw any of his students in a sexual way. He was too much of a professional.
She smiled and said thank you once again. He stared at her for a long time before saying, 'Miss.Carter, if you ever need my assistance again, you need only ask.' He paused. 'And it might be for the best if you arranged to be in the company of others as much as possible.'
Thea frowned slowly, realising what he was saying. Malfoy might attempt an attack again, and next time he could be successful in his advances. The thought of Malfoy raping her was too powerful an image, and she swallowed as she nodded her head.
Gently curling his fingers around her elbow, Snape led her to the door, unlocking it as he did so.
'You must take this as soon as you awake tomorrow, and once more at midday.' She slipped the potion into the pocket of her robe and nodded. nd pnd perhaps,' Snape mused thoughtfully, 'we should cover some different potions and spells in our next private lesson.'
His eyes burned into hers, and she knew that he was already planning to teach her some new spells; spells that would protect her against Malfoy.
'I would appreciate that, Professor.' Her voice was serious. Snape nodded at her, turning away abruptly, and so Thea left, walking slightly shakily down the hall.
Snape leant against the closed door his, his eyes angry black slits. He had always knew that Draco Malfoy was a nasty young man, so he wondered why he was so surprised that he had attempted to rape a fellow student. Maybe it was more the fact he had intended to rape Thea that confused him the most. Although an attractive girl, Thea had not the cool perfection of Adrianna, or the buxom, earthy beauty of some of the other young women.
But then Snape imagined Malfoy would be more excited by stripping power from a woman as strong and controlled as Thea. Still, the thought of student rape was intolerable, and Snape found himself quite furious.
After Snape had poured a large glass of sherry and had been staring thoughtfully into the fire for sometime, he heard a dull ringing sounded from within his desk. Quickly standing, Snape pulled out what looked like a large piece of glass. He laid one fingertip upon it, and the surface seemed to swim and churn before the face of a very distinguished man appeared.
'Snape.' His voice sounded in the small room.
'Mr.Carter.' Snape nodded, his face neutral.
The man smiled. His eyes were a startling green, his hair dark and thick, as was his beard. He had a haughty look on his handsome face, and his thin mouth was curved in an arrogant smile.
'You are watching my daughter carefully?' Carter demanded. 'You know she is to be initiated soon.'
'Of course.' Snape spoke into the glass. 'I am keeping a very close eye on her actions.'
'Good.' Carter's voice had dropped so low he was practically purring. 'She will be tested soon, and then we shall see where her allegiance lies.'
'Of course, sir. I will wait for further word.'
'Good. Transmition over.' Carter was curt, and then he was gone.
Snape laid the communicator carefully back into the drawer. A troubled frown marred his forehead. He wondered what Thea's test would be, and if she would even be aware that it was occurring.
