AN: Does anyone know how to get the italics to work when posting to ff.net? I have a lot of things that I'll be having people say that are thought and I prefer to use italics, but if no one knows I'll just have to use tildas (~) to denote them. I'll try that here for this chappie.
~blah blah blah~ means character thoughts
"blah blah blah" means character talking
*blah blah blah* means the subconscious talking
And now on with the show...
Chapter 7: Firecall with Dumbledore and a Chat with Athyr
Remus returned to the living room to find Harry, Draco and Sirius involved in a hushed discussion about Athyr.
"...its obvious that she's not from our wizarding world. But how can we know that what she has said is true?" Draco was asking both men.
"True," Sirius agreed. "While she does resemble the girl I met on that island I just don't know. She does smell the same however..."
"I know that its her," Harry offered and blushed when Draco frowned at him.
"Harry you seem to be hosed by her. While, I'll admit she's very powerful. A powerful what is what I want to know. She could be another Voldemort for all we know. I think we should firecall Dumbledore and see if he knows anything about her."
Remus watched the conversation for a moment before joining in, "I agree with Draco. Since we're not sure about who she is and all we have to go on is her word it wouldn't hurt to get information from a more trusted source."
"Can you at least agree with that Harry?" Draco asked his boyfriend and reached out to grab his hand.
"Sure," Harry agreed reluctantly, "but I'm telling you, she doesn't strike me as someone we shouldn't be able to trust. Why would she tell us all of those things about herself? If she were here to do us harm why wouldn't she just kill us and be done with it?"
"Something else to consider is how she smelled to Sirius and myself," Remus added. "Siri said that she smelled familiar. However, what I caught was a whiff of blood and magic, very old magic. And something else, almost like lust, but somehow more potent."
"Fine," Sirius said, "we're in agreement that she's different and that she could potentially be dangerous..." he stared at each of the men individually. "Let's just talk to Albus and then take it from there."
Taking the initiative Sirius walked to the little clay pot beside the fireplace. After picking up a handful of floo powder he tossed it into the fire and called out for the headmaster of Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Moments later the wizened face of Albus Dumbledore appeared in the now green flames of the hearth.
"Good afternoon gentlemen to what do I owe this wonderful call?" Even in the flames of the fire it was possible to see the twinkle in the wizard's eyes.
"Albus, we have a visit we were hoping you could give us some information on," Sirius informed the Headmaster.
"I take it you mean the young girl from Egypt?"
"Albus, do you know everything?!?" Sirius and the others couldn't believe the level of knowing of the wizard. Dumbledore always seemed to know what was going on.
"Well with the great release of power from Egypt I would have been hard pressed to have to have not felt it. As I'm sure young Harry was as well," eyes landed on the young Gryffindor.
"Who is she Professor Dumbledore?" Draco asked. ~I need to know who she is...why Harry feels this way about her...Why I'm beginning to feel this way about her,~ Draco thought to himself.
"She didn't tell you?" returned Dumbledore.
"She did..." Draco answered sheepishly, "but we were hoping you could..."
"We want some assurances that she is who she says she is," Sirius finally said.
"Oh gentlemen," the headmaster began, "I assure she is the goddess she told you she is. There are other things she may have to tell you, but that is for her to reveal, not I."
Draco and Sirius breathed a sigh of relief while Remus and Harry were content to have what they already knew confirmed.
"If that is all I will leave you, but do have her contact me. We have much to discuss and I have something that I must return to her," that said Dumbledore disappeared from the flames.
"Well," Harry clapped his hands and stood. "Now that that's taken care of how about we get on with our day."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Draco found Harry sitting beside the lake next to his godfather's cottage. With a glance it was obvious to him what was on the mind of his lover. *And on your own as well* the little voice in his mind reminded him.
Gathering up his Malfoy pride he decided to plunge back in. ~What do I have to lose,~ he thought to himself taking a seat beside Harry. ~Everything.~
"Do you really think we loved her in a past life?" Harry asked before Draco could ask the exact same question.
"I don't know Harry. I can't imagine loving anyone else but you," Draco sighed. He really didn't want to have this conversation. "In this or any other lifetime."
"I feel something for her, Draco. I don't know if it's love or not, but..." Harry broke off.
"I know Harry. I know... she's only just arrived and yet, I feel as though she's always been there."
"In my dream there were so many emotions flowing over me, but the one that I felt the most was a sense of completeness," Harry hung his head. Draco noticed that there were tears in his eyes, "I love you, Draco, how can I love someone else, too?"
Fury pulsed through Draco. It focused solely on Athyr. ~She's causing this... my love hurts so much because of her... I won't have it, no matter what I feel for her.~ Wrapping his arms around Harry, Draco kissed the tussled dark head. ~Athyr and I will just have to have a little talk.~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Athyr awoke just as the sun was going down. She yawned once and tried to get her surroundings and as the memories came back she was filled with a sense of loss. Melancholy though she was the hunger she felt took its place as she remembered the cookies from earlier.
"And maybe a bath..." she murmured to herself making her way to the door. It opened before she could touch the handle and Draco stood there blocking her path.
"Good evening Draco."
"Athyr..." the young Slytherin hesitated when faced with the Egyptian goddess. Drooping amber eyes blinked up at him. Draco could hear his heart pounding when faced with her. Despite the feelings he was coming to have for her, he loved Harry more and he wouldn't have her confusing him with stories about their past lives together.
"I want you to stop telling Harry about your past lives," he blurted out.
"You were there as well, Draco," Athyr reminded him quietly.
"It doesn't matter. Harry's all confused because he believes that now he's in love with you as well. He doesn't understand how he can love two people equally."
"I'm sorry that Harry's confused. I never meant for that to happen. Triads or menage a trois, as I believe they are called now, were a common occurrence during my previous lifetimes. I know it is difficult to believe, but loving two people equally should not be that hard to understand," she explained. "But that doesn't really matter anyway."
"Why not?" Draco asked furiously. This conversation was not going the way he had expected.
"I don't plan on repeating the past. I have no intentions of giving in to my feelings. In fact I don't plan on falling in love with you or Harry at all." Athyr swept out of the room, leaving Draco.
~She said exactly what I wanted,~ Draco thought. *Then why do you feel as if your heart is breaking?* his subconscious asked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner was a quiet affair with Athyr and Draco contributing little in the way of conversation. Harry also said little but Sirius and Remus were able to draw him into talking about Ron and Hermione's budding relationship and how the two were planning to spend their summer.
"Well Hermione wanted to visit the Burrow, but Ron wanted to visit her in the Muggle world," Harry explained. "And when Ron phrased the request in the form of an educational experience for himself, Hermione was all for it. So Ron will be staying at Hermione's house for a month and then she'll be coming for a shorter visit to the Burrow. They want to meet some time during the next few weeks so that Ron can do some shopping in Muggle London."
"Shopping actually sounds like a good idea, Siri," Remus said. "You and Harry both need new wardrobes. What with Harry wearing his cousins hand me downs and you with that decrepit leather jacket. You could both use a few improvements."
While Harry was all for shopping for new clothes, Sirius wasn't as easy to convince. "What do you mean 'decrepit leather jacket.' I'll have you know that this jacket is a classic. I've had it since I was in high school," he miffed to Remus.
"Yeah, and it looks like it too," Remus deadpanned to the others drawing a small smile from Athyr and laughter from Harry and Draco. "I'm not saying you have to get rid of it Siri, but wouldn't it be good to get some other clothes as well. You may as well spend some of the money that the Ministry rewarded to you." The Ministry of Magic has released the holds on the Black family vault and had also given Sirius reparations for his wrongful imprisonment and help during the war.
Sirius frowned, but it slowly turned to a smile as he gave the idea of shopping more thought. "I guess so and it'll give me an opportunity to spend some of it on Harry."
"I have my own money, Sirius," Harry reminded his godfather.
"Save it for school or whatever, Harry. I want to spend some money on you. I haven't ever had the chance and now I can make up for lost time."
"I too would like to do some shopping if I may," Athyr piped in from her seat. "My family has always had a vault at Gringotts and I since I'll be in London I'll be needing clothing to fit in."
"Sure," Remus said warming to the idea. "That way you can meet Harry's friends, Hermione and Ron and you can see some of Diagon Alley along with Muggle London."
"I'll owl Ron and Hermione and we'll plan to meet up with them in a couple of weeks," Harry said happily.
"However, until then, is it okay if I borrow clothes from one of you?" Athyr asked. "While I can always clean this dress, I think that wearing it everyday will get a little old eventually."
"Sure you can borrow something of Draco's, he's got tons of clothing and he never fails to visit without bringing at least two trunks full," Harry offered.
"As long as Draco doesn't mind," Athyr said.
"You don't mind do you Dray?" Harry asked glancing over at his boyfriend.
"No, it's fine," Draco answered hesitantly. "Just pick something out of the trunks and one of us can spell it to fit you."
"So now that that's settled," Remus began. "Who want's dessert?" He placed a tray of cookies in the center of the table.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After dinner and dessert at which time Athyr devoured several chocolate chip cookies (AN: YUMMY COOKIES) Harry led her to his and Draco's room and opened the trunks and helped her go through the clothing. Athyr picked out one pair of jeans, a white t-shirt, black hooded zip-up sweater, and a pair of white silk pajamas. She went into the bathroom with the pajamas and after showering and washing heir sir she came back out.
Harry gaped at her. ~I thought she was beautiful before, but now... ~ Draco had come in and sat on the bed reading a magazine. He too looked shocked by the change a little hot water and soap had caused to Athyr. Her hair, though wet was shiny and waved heavily. Athyr sat at the end of the bed next to Draco's feet and used a towel to dry the ends of her hair.
"Harry do you have a comb?" Athyr asked. Draco snorted and glanced up from his magazine.
"You see his hair, do you think that he can get a comb through that mop?" Draco ducked as Harry threw a pair of socks in his direction. "I have a comb and brush, however, and I would be willing to lend them to you on one condition."
"And what would that be?" Athyr asked narrowing her eyes. She could feel the evenings earlier tension draining from her and she was able to give Draco a real smile.
"I want to comb and brush your hair," he answered. Then threw the socks that Harry had tossed at him earlier back at his boyfriend when he laughed.
"Draco has this think about long hair. I don't know why, but when he found he couldn't tackle my hair he gave up, but he's been dying to get into Remy's and would have asked by now, if Sirius hadn't made his head off limits," Harry explained. Grabbing a pair of pajama bottoms he went into the now steaming bathroom.
"I don't mind," Athyr shrugged. She turned her back to Draco and pushed her damp hair over her shoulders. Draco had left the bed and returned with a wide toothed comb and a large paddle brush. As Draco began pulling the comb through the wet strands and was surprised with the softness of the hair. After he had worked all of the tangles out he reached for the brush and starting at the crown of Athyr's head he dragged it down to the edges. Within a few strokes he noticed that Athyr's head was slumped forward and glancing over her should he noticed that her eyes were closed.
"Athyr..." he nudged her slightly. When he got no response Draco put down the brush and slid closer to Athyr. He could smell the soap that still clung to her, but there was also an underlying scent it smelled warmer and it comforted him. Giving himself a mental shake Draco tapped her on the shoulder and when her eyes open he smiled. "Looks like someone's still tired, despite their nap earlier."
"Thanks for doing my hair. My mother used to brush my hair for me," Athyr's eyes watered. She hugged Draco and when he pressed a small kiss to her cheek she pulled away quickly. Eyes wide she placed a hand over the spot where Draco had kissed her. Mumbling a quick goodnight she fled the room.
Harry had returned just in time to see the small embrace and Athyr's reaction to it. "So you do feel it," Harry said, it wasn't a question.
"Yeah, but it doesn't matter," Draco sighed and rubbed a hand between his eyebrows. "I even spoke to her today about telling you about the dreams and how confused you had been this afternoon. And I just went and kissed her. Bloody hell, I'm probably more confused than you are." Draco's normally smooth hair became disheveled as he ran his hands through it. "I feel it, but I don't want to. I only want to love you." Harry had sat down beside Draco and rubbed a hand over his back, which was caught and brought to his mouth and kissed.
"I think this is probably something that her lovers went through before," Harry murmured. "Trying to decide if its possible to love the someone other than the one you're with. And like those before us we're going to have to make that decision."
"No we won't," Draco said softly. "She won't love us back. She told me today that she doesn't plan on falling in love with us at all."
