Last Chapter:
Knowing it was better that the conversation didn’t occur outside, Severus stepped to the side, allowing Draco to drag Potter into the empty classroom. As soon as the boys were inside, Severus let the door shut with a large bang, which made Potter jump, before turning to the pair.
“What is going on here?”
Chapter 7 - Truth Rising
Severus’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the pair. Neither of the boys spoke. Draco stood staring at Potter, who in turn was staring at the floor.
“Well?” Severus barked out, causing Potter to jump slightly, his eyes still trained on the floor.
Draco opened his mouth to speak, but one glare from Severus had him closing it shut before crossing his arms in front of him, glaring back at Severus.
“I…I…”
“You, you are late Potter. I don’t know what you thought bringing Mr. Malfoy would do. 50 points from Gryffindor and you will serve another two detentions with me, on top of the week’s worth you already owe me. Understood?”
Harry nodded his head, his hands beginning to shake slightly as Snape rebuked him. He didn’t want to tell Snape that he hadn’t brought Malfoy here. He didn’t want to explain why he was late in case he angered his Professor, so he bowed his head and wrapped his arms around his middle to try and offer himself some comfort.
“Mr. Malfoy, I hope you have a better explanation as to why you are here.”
Draco snorted at his godfather’s conduct and uncrossed his arms as he perched himself on the nearest desk in the classroom.
Severus rolled his eyes and stood staring expectantly as his godson made himself comfortable on one of the wooden desks.
“I found him,” Draco gestured towards Potter, who was standing at a distance from the pair, head still down. “trapped on the trick stair in the staircase. I pulled him out.”
“That still does not explain your reason for your being here.”
Draco smirked and shook his head at his godfather’s uncharacteristic impatience.
“It’s hard to explain.” Draco looked over to where Potter was standing; his head was now up, and he was staring wide-eyed at Draco.
‘No, you can’t say anything.’
Draco dropped his gaze from Potter’s, unable to watch the panic building in those eyes.
“Look at his arms.” Draco stood as Severus blinked at him before turning towards Potter, who was already backing away from the older man, his arms held in front of him.
‘No. Please!’
“Please no.” Harry turned his head towards Draco for help. ”Please.”
Draco’s expression did not change as he watched Snape advance on a terrified Potter.
Severus reached out and roughly seized one of Potter’s outstretched arms, his face not revealing any emotion, even upon hearing Potter’s cry of pain. With a sneer at the younger boy’s attempt to pull his arm away, Severus pulled up Potter’s robe sleeve.
Severus stared down at the bruises and cuts that formed a patchwork across the Gryffindor’s skin; his expression still didn’t change.
“See.”
“Indeed.”
Severus dropped Potter’s arm, which fell numbly to his side. Severus moved back to where Draco was sitting.
“How bad is it?”
“That’s just the start. It’s like that all over his front and back.”
Severus raised an eyebrow at Draco’s inside knowledge, but said nothing.
“He wouldn’t tell me how it happened, just kept saying he couldn’t tell.”
Severus nodded and pulled himself up to his full height; he stared at Potter, who swallowed.
“How did this happen?” Severus barked out.
Harry’s eyes moved down to the floor as he began to vigorously shake his head.
“Nothing…I just…”
“Don’t lie, Potter.”
Harry panicked; images of his uncle rushed through his mind, and the only words he could form began to babble out of his mouth.
“I’m an idiot and I can’t go anywhere without falling and hurting myself; that’s where the bruises come from.”
Draco and Severus exchanged puzzled looks as Potter began to babble excuses, his hands shaking as he looked as if he was on the verge of collapsing.
Severus moved forward, but that only seemed to fuel Harry’s imminent meltdown. Harry covered his eyes with his hands, his head still violently shaking from side to side. He moved backwards towards the corner, excuses still pouring from his lips, his mind going blank, until he hit the stone wall behind him.
“I’m an idiot. I’m an idiot. I’m an idiot.”
Draco and Severus watched as Potter slid himself down the wall repeating “I’m an idiot” to himself. When Potter reached the floor, he began to rock violently back and forth, his back and head smashing into the wall with sickening thuds, echoed by the words “I’m an idiot.” They stood transfixed by the sight before them, too stunned to do anything. A sudden smash brought them both out of their stupor.
“What do we do?” Draco asked Severus in a hushed tone, not wanting to upset Potter even further than they both had done.
“Potter, stop that this instant!” Severus bellowed over the younger boy’s babbling.
Surprisingly, the noises stopped instantly, hot tears streaming down Harry’s pale, gaunt face, sobs raking through his malnourished body.
Severus moved towards Potter with the intention of discarding the broken vial that lay next to him, only to back off when Potter screamed in pure terror upon seeing his advancement.
Draco watched as Severus jabbed his wand at the mess on the floor, clearing it before turning his back to Potter, no emotion expressed on the hard features.
“Now what are we going to do?”
“There isn’t much we can do.”
“So we’re just going to leave him there?”
Severus shrugged and turned to watch the Gryffindor curled up on the cold stone floor, his body shaking uncontrollably. Draco reappeared with a grey blanket folded over one of his robed arms. Slowly, Draco approached the raven-haired boy, carefully unfolding the blanket as he moved. When he was near enough, Draco placed the blanket over his shaking frame, covering Potter completely.
Before Draco had a chance to move out of the way, a fist came flying up through the blanket, which muffled Potter’s panic filled screams.
“No…please…need to…can’t…breath.”
Limbs flew out from the blanket as Potter struggled to remove it from on top of him. Severus glared at Draco, who was crouched next to Potter, staring at the boy, before he stalked over and pulled the blanket away from Potter, who stared up at him as the blanket was lifted.
“He thinks you’re trying to suffocate him.”
Harry, however, only managed to catch the word “suffocate,” and seeing Snape towering over him, blanket in hand, drove a bolt of fear through him. Harry jerked himself away from the floor, dragging his shaking body until he was hidden behind Draco, one hand clutching at his own robes.
“Please.”
Severus and Draco stared at each other, neither of them knowing what to do. Draco narrowed his eyes at Severus when he moved away from the pair, leaving Draco to deal with the terror filled boy.
Draco took a deep breath before turning his head to look at the figure crouching behind him.
“Harry.” Harry’s head shot up to look at the blonde, flinching back slightly when he saw Draco staring down at him. “Harry, you need to calm down.”
Draco turned his body around so he was facing Harry, causing the younger boy to release his robes from his hand.
“Look at me, Harry.” Draco waited patiently until Harry timidly lifted his eyes, small sobs still escaping his parted lips. “Neither I nor Professor Snape is going to hurt you.” Draco studied Harry’s eyes for any sign that Harry was taking in what he was saying. “Understand?”
Harry seemed to calm down upon the mention of his own name, so Draco continued to use it to soothe the boy.
Severus stepped forward, and Harry shrank back behind Draco, his small frame still shaking. Draco glared at the potions vial in the man’s hand, but took it any way. After twisting the vial in his hand to see the label, Draco nodded in thanks to Severus.
“Harry, take this potion; it will calm you down.”
Draco turned his body around so he was facing Harry once more and placed the calming draught into Harry’s trembling hand.
“W-w-what is it?”
“It’s a calming draught; it will relax you.”
“Are you sure?” Harry asked, his eyes flickering briefly to where Severus was standing, clearly not trusting the older man.
“Yes, I’m sure. Do you want me to drink some first?”
Harry nodded and watched as Malfoy retrieved the vial and took a slow sip from it. Harry didn’t understand the change in Malfoy. Normally, he would have left him stuck in that step or probably left and brought back his gang of cronies to mock him. But instead, he had stayed and helped him. He brought him to Snape and then almost protected him from the man.
‘What’s going on?’
Harry shut off his mind as the vial was gently pushed back into his own hand. The Gryffindor silently studied Malfoy for any affects the potion may have had upon him. Once he was satisfied, he quickly downed the potion. The cool liquid passed over his tongue, leaving a bitter and yet refreshing taste in his mouth. It travelled down his throat, soothing his tired vocal chords, relaxing him as it travelled through his body.
“Better?”
Harry nodded. As his thoughts began coming back to him, he quickly tried to regain his composure. From the looks on the pair’s faces, it wasn’t needed, so he sagged back against the wall before drawing his knees up towards him and placing his head in his hands, the now empty vial clattering to the floor.
Draco moved to ask Harry what was wrong, but Severus caught his eye. He shook his head and motioned for Draco to come over to where he was standing. As Draco moved towards him, Severus pulled his wand from out of his robe sleeve and cleared the empty vial away. When Draco was close enough, Severus placed a silencing spell around the pair.
“We need to find out what happened to him, Sev. This is serious.”
“I can see it’s serious, Draco. People don’t normally break down every other second!” Severus snapped.
“Well, what are we going to do?” Draco glared at his godfather, who let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose as he thought.
“Well, the simplest way to make him reveal what really happened would be to give him some truth serum. He seems to trust you enough.”
“I suppose.” Draco nodded to Severus, who removed the silencing spell surrounding them before Draco moved over to shelves at the sides of the classroom to pick out a vial of truth serum.
Draco grabbed the vial as he made his way back to where Harry was sitting.
“Harry, would you like a drink?”
Harry didn’t lift his head, but nodded against his hands; embarrassment had begun to set in. He had freaked out in front of the two people he disliked most, and now it was more than likely that they would both use it against him at some point. But Malfoy genuinely seemed to care. Harry had never seen Malfoy act like this with anyone. Maybe it was all an act to make him trust him before spilling his secret to everyone.
“Come on then.”
“What?”
“We can’t drink in the classroom, health and safety and all.”
Harry let himself be pulled to his feet and led out of the classroom. The trio turned to walk deeper into the dungeons, but Harry hesitated.
‘Where are they taking me?’
“It’s not far.” Draco gave a small tug on Harry’s arm and ushered him along the dark corridor. Severus was walking in front, leading the way. Draco was at the rear, making sure Harry was going with them. That left Harry sandwiched in-between the pair. This unnerved Harry; he had no way out again.
‘Please don’t hurt me.’
Unknown to Harry, Snape had stopped at a door at the end of one of the corridors, causing Harry to carry on walking straight into him. Luckily, the calming potion was still taking effect(,) and Harry just muttered a muted “Sorry” before continuing to follow Snape into what looked like his personal quarters.
The thing that struck Harry most was how homely Snape’s quarters were. The room was fairly large. Most of the walls were coated in bookcases on which hundreds of potions books resided. At the end of the room was a desk piled with paper, and there where two doors just in front of the desk on opposite sides of the room. On the left hand side of the room was a small mahogany dining table with two chairs on either end of it. On the table stood a blue ceramic teapot with several mugs, presumably from this afternoon, all standing on a wooden tray. On the right hand wall there was a magnificent fireplace with a fire crackling in the grate, the flames illuminating a drink cabinet which stood beside it. In front of the fire was a dark blue sofa, two identical, inviting chairs on either side of it, and a wooden coffee table centrepiece, which were elegantly set off by the cream carpet. The room had a blue and cream colour scheme, which surprised Harry. He had thought it would have been green and silver, with snakes embroidered everywhere.
Draco moved over to the dining table and pulled some clean mugs from a cupboard hidden in the bookcase, then stood and looked over at Severus, who was shutting the door behind Harry. Harry was biting his fingernails, eyes roaming around the room, trying to take all the features in.
Draco gave a small cough, causing Severus to look in his direction.
“I can’t make tea,” he announced.
“I’ll do it,” Harry offered and was about to move towards the dining table when Snape held a hand out in front of him. Harry immediately stopped and shuffled back to create some distance between himself and Snape.
Severus moved over to the dining table, taking the vial from Draco and directing him towards the seating area. As Severus made the tea, Draco sauntered over to the sofa and settled himself back against the large cushions, adjusting the smaller cushions behind him until he was comfy. Once he was satisfied, Draco motioned for Harry to sit. Slowly, Harry shuffled towards one of the armchairs and perched himself on the end of the cushion, his arms wrapped around his centre.
A minute or so later, Severus placed mugs in front of everyone. Draco nodded at Severus, who gave a slight nod in return to confirm that he had added the potion to Harry’s mug. With that, Draco reached out and took a sip from the steaming mug, recoiling his lips as he felt the heat burn his mouth slightly.
Harry followed the other’s example and raised his mug to his lips, gently blowing on the surface as Draco was now doing. He had only had tea a few times before, and he couldn't remember what it tasted like. Harry gulped, unaware that the room’s other occupants were watching him do so. Harry took a small sip, letting the liquid flow across his tongue before swallowing it. Harry then took a larger sip before replacing the mug on one of the small mats on the table in front of him.
Draco watched as the mug was placed on the table. He was about to open his mouth when he received a kick to his leg from Severus, who had settled himself on the armchair nearest Draco. Draco glared at Severus, who slightly shook his head in answer. It would take a slightly larger amount than two sips to get the information they wanted.
Scowling, Draco got up, still holding his mug of tea and made his way over to the drinks cabinet.
“Draco!”
“Just a little.”
“No Draco. What would your father say?”
Draco smirked, sat back down and sipped his tea once again. Harry smiled at the banter between the pair and picked up his mug and took another mouthful.
“I wish I could have someone like that to talk to.”
Harry’s mug fell from his hands, landing on the table, and his hands flew over his mouth.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” Harry repeated as he caught sight of the tea creeping across the length of the table and dripping off the edge onto the cream carpet.
Severus and Draco did not move. They both placed their mugs back on the table. Draco pulled off his black school shoes and threw them over the sofa, much to Severus’s disapproval and lifted his legs onto the sofa so he was sitting cross-legged to avoid any tea that could find its way onto him. Severus shook his head, but didn’t say anything. Instead he leaned forward in the chair, looking directly at Harry.
“Potter, sit down,” he said firmly. Two pairs of eyes followed his movement as he sat back down on the armchair. Harry looked over to Draco, pleading with his eyes.
“I said I couldn’t tell.”
“No, you can and you will tell, Potter. How did you get all those cuts and bruises?”
Tears began to fall from Harry’s eyes as the potion forced his mouth into action.
“My uncle, he…”
