The next time she awakens, Tonks sighs in contentment. Feeling a pressure on her side, where Harry lay, she sighs in amusement and wonder, completely overtaken in his arms. Sometime in the night, she had realized that in the few minutes before the wedding, after the wedding and before they consummated the marriage, she had gone from crush to love.
As the final fibers of sleep left her eyes, Tonks sighed. Shaking Harry softly, she wakes her husband with a kiss to the lips. His eyes flutter open for a moment before he, too, is swept away in what he feels is a good showing of how she may, or may not yet, feel about him.
"Good morning, Harry." she whispers to him, softly as if enjoying the solidarity of the relationship. He smiles at her as if in acceptance of their marriage. "Good morning Dora."
She smiles at his shortened nickname, which makes her consider for once the love that her mother had when she named her daughter what she did. It was at times like these, when she was completely sure of everything, that she was more complete.
Of course, she too had to admit, that since waking up earlier in the morning, she was surer of her feelings than she had been before. Smiling at Harry's innocence was something she was going to cherish for a long time to come, even through all the hardships and obstacles that he faced. Looking back, she was surprised to see that it had always, in some way, been Harry that calmed her.
She was six when Harry defeated Voldemort, her mother had been gone for weeks at a time, and she'd only ever once met her father. She was lonely, starting wizarding head start, she wasn't, she found out, the only one. That all the students of wizard families had been uprooted in some way.
She first met Serena there, at the Wizarding Head Start School in Hogsmeade. Through their loneliness, they were able to come together.
Then, Harry had come along. He had defeated Lord Voldemort, and two girls began their long childhood crushes. Serena had, eventually, outgrown hers, but Tonks had not.
Then during her Hogwarts years, Tonks had been treated differently because of her skills as a Metamorphmagus. At first, it was hard to accept that people could treat a person the way they do because of something that was so utterly stupid.
She could not date, all of her dates thoughts pressed towards the perfect female, and she was forced to change. Soon, it was obvious that only, in her mind, that Harry Potter would accept her for who she was.
She blushed as she realized with a flicker of thought that she was right. Looking over at Harry, she grinned thinking that maybe, just maybe, it would be alright.
As she got up, she made her way to the hall bathroom/shower. The other tenants and her shared, as it was only a single bedroom floor. She knew they'd have to get a bigger space. She knocked on the door, and when no one answered, walked in. She made her way to the shower, after having removed her clothing and placed them in her bag.
It was then she heard it, the trilling like a phoenix, a song that would make any person of the light happy and hurt the people of the dark.
Wanting to lightly back out, she walked slowly towards the door, but stopped as she heard him.
"Are you getting in or not, Dora?"
She blushed furiously as she realized that the person in the shower in front of her was her husband. "Yeah, sure" she commented lazily.
After they were rinsed and lathered, she was surprised at Harry's sudden turn. If she'd tried that, she'd have lost her balance. Glaring at his ability to keep steady in the slippery spots, Tonks was surprised to find herself face to face with him.
Harry, of course, was grinning at her madly. Looking in her eyes, as she did his, Harry felt as if all the problems in the world were as minute as those of the caterpillar, who had yet to turn to a butterfly.
"Good morning, Dora. Now that we are properly freshened, I wanted to properly greet you."
A short, passionate kiss later, they were stepping out of the shower. Just their luck too, as a knock had just come at the door.
"It's getting on ten minutes lassie, hurry up in there!"
Tonks groaned in displeasure. As Harry took to drying her from the waist down, Tonks worked on her top half, and the top of his head. As he finished up with her, she dressed quickly and again blushed when he stood up, fully dressed himself.
Opening the door, the newlyweds smiled at the look that crossed old lady Marshall's face.
Walking past her, Harry and Tonks entered her one-person apartment.
"So," he began quietly, as to draw her attention but not scare her, "what do we need to do today, Dora?"
She sighed, hoping the answer would be to sleep, take some pain-relieving potion, anything but what she knew needed to be done. "We need to go make sure cousin Draco's claim goes contested."
Harry looked at her, as if wondering if she were serious. She nodded at him, and grinning as she realized that after all that had happened, he was still scared. Scared that it would all leave him at a moments notice.
She sighed as he picked out a small, barely used emerald green dress robe that matched his eyes perfectly. Frowning, she remembered that it was the same one he had wore during the Tri-Wizard Tournament, and wondering if he, even for the briefest moments relented marrying her for the beautiful Patil girl.
But, she reminded herself, it was Harry, and not some common womanizer, and that her fears were unfounded, especially after last night's experiences.
"Harry, not those old things, here... put this back on."
He looked to the tuxedo that was staring him in the face, as memories of last night came back to his mind. A blush covered his face, and she knew that it would be hard to convince him to ever wear that piece of clothing again.
"Alright, we'll go to Madam Malkin and Gladrags, but Harry, you need to do this. It's not something you can put off forever."
Harry sighed, wanting to understand how a group of people that have too much power and influence can gain even more off a will, when in the muggle world, it's hardly ever heard of.
His confusion, and fear, may have been misinterpreted, because Tonks smiled at him. "Harry, you might be scared to do this, but I'm not! It's something I have to do, for my family's honor. I want you, my husband, to be there beside me when I rub our contest in his face, but if you need time, I will give it to you. Now, what I need to know is will you work with me?"
Harry nods his head. "Of course I will; you didn't even have to ask, Dora. I'm just... confused and upset I guess. I mean, we're in the limelight even more now, because of our marriage, if we do this, then we'll have inherited the Black name and all of its separate... responsibilities."
"It's alright, now, what I need to know is if you're coming or not?"
Nodding his head in a resolved way, Harry grabs onto her hand as she apparated them to the outside of Gladrags in Hogsmeade.
Entering the store, Harry smiles as Mr. Gladrag runs over and greets him, as does Hilda Malkin. She had been called earlier for another job, this time from the Malfoy's, who insisted on having the best of the material. Narcissa, in particular, made sure the banner of the family Black was on her robes, as she was sure that today they would gain the seats, and honors that are bestowed on her family.
However, Harry and Tonks had other ideas. Asking for the same service as yesterday, they said they would be paying final respects to a member of her family today, and that she and he needed the appropriate clothing. They both obliged and, smiling, fitted them together in a way that showed their status in life.
Tonks, who was wearing a very nice magenta, had robes with the symbol of the Potter family on her robes, with one slight alteration. It showed that she was the Lady of the Potter family, and therefore had the ability to do anything under that family banner that she would have as a Tonks, or under the Black family.
Harry too had robes, of a midnight blue. His was fitted with the Potter crest, which made the entire situation even better as he was declared Lord and head of the family due to their marriage.
Looking at his wife, Harry asks the silent question, 'are we ready?' She nodded at him in answer and, smiling, took his hand and apparated to Diagon Alley, where they immediately made a great impression. Many pureblooded families, whom had been in attendance at their wedding, or at least represented in some way, were all giving Harry some of his proper respect, as he was the head of an ancient family, now at least.
Taking her hand, Harry watched as she moved towards Gringotts at a leisurely pace. It was at these moments that Harry was jealous of his wife, for growing up in a house that embraced her life, and embraced her magic as if it were just another aspect of life, and that there was nothing wrong with being different.
His thoughts, however, turned to the matter at hand. At Gringotts, the line was backed up for people seeking entrance. Most of them, half-blood or lower according to stature, were being held back by the guards.
"Excuse me, what's going on?" he asked one of the patrons of the bank. He sneered at Harry's dress and said, "some big meeting of the purebloods, and they've restricted access to the ancient pureblood families."
Harry looked at his wife. "Make way, Harry Potter coming through."
The crowd, well those closest to the Potter's looked at them. Excited whispers ran through the crowd as their hero walked easily to the large double doors. The Goblin there had this look as if to say that it wasn't important that Harry Potter was there or not.
The other wizards held their breath in bated anticipation as Harry stood looking at the Goblin's. They were all guarding the door, including Vladimir, who was looking as if it were the last thing he was wanting to do at the moment.
"Sirs, if this has anything to do with the Sirius Black business, I humbly request you allow my wife and me in to contest."
Vladimir smiled. "Yes, yes... she's a daughter of the house Black! Let them in, let them in!"
Tailpipe, who was too there waiting for the business to end, had, by request of his family, requested a closed session of the purebloods counsel. Try as he might, the Goblin should have known that Vladimir would have found a way of getting passed what the law had decided. Nodding to the guards, he let Tonks pass. As Harry strode forward, however, he was denied, and a glint was found in Tailpipe's eyes.
"Is there a reason for keeping my husband out of this bank?" Tonks asked shrilly. Oops, mistake number two, Tailpipe. Harry grinned as he was allowed in the bank, finally. Turning back to the crowd, which was bordering on turmoil, Harry looked at Vladimir and asked if there was a way to let them get some money from their vaults even though the bank was closed. The Goblin nodded and assured him the others would take care of it, and that neither the meeting, nor the ritual could start until and unless he witnessed it.
As he lead them to the room, he warned that each pureblood family was at this meeting, including the Weasley's, the Longbottom's, the Bones' and the Malfoy's, the Parkinson's, and the Nott's.
Though he did explain that since the heads of most houses were, under federal law, wanted for treason they could not show up and so the next oldest female took over unless there was a male heir.
"Just like they're doing with Sirius." Tonks commented and Harry had to grab her hand to calm her down.
"Vladimir, I'm confused about something. If... if Tonks and I have a child, it won't be a pureblood, but it won't be a half-blood either, as we're both half-bloods. What happens in that case?"
Vladimir smiled before answering, "Since you're married, and from ancient families, you are both considered to be pure of blood when together. Separate, you are Harry Potter and Nymphadora Potter, but under the laws of wizarding society, you, when together like this are Lord and Lady Potter, the final heirs of the house Potter."
Harry sighed and looked at his wife. "So, it's your decision, Dora. Do we go in as Lord and Lady Potter or as the representatives of our different houses?"
She smirked and said, "What do you think, my Lord Potter?"
Smiling, Harry bowed his head.
When the door opened, the room turned at once to see the newly wed Potter family enter, bringing protest from one side and welcoming from the other. Amelia, working in her capacity as head of Magical Law Enforcement, and Albus Dumbledore were in attendance. Albus was there as former head of the Potter family fortune and in his position as Head of the Wizengamot. He sighed in relief, while other's like Narcissa Malfoy had deemed it necessary to make noise.
"And what, exactly, are you here for, Potter? Nymphadora, you of all people should respect your pureblood family members in this matter! You're both, in case you have forgotten your place, not allowed in these proceedings."
Pansy Parkinson laughed as Draco sneered at his school rival.
Harry looked at Tonks and said, "Lord and Lady Potter wish to join these proceedings, as it was not deemed fit to notify us about the meeting of the counsel."
Fudge paled as he heard their status, and names. He stood, wiping his forehead as Narcissa looked at him with that death glare she had perfected, and said, "I welcome you, Lord and Lady Potter to the counsel. As the newcomers, you have the floor and can express your opinions on the matters at hand."
Harry looked at Dumbledore, who was too smiling as if he'd been given an early present. He knew why they were there, and that was for Draco Malfoy to steal his inheritance. So, he decided to state the facts as he knew them first.
"We both, as much as Narcissa and Draco loath to admit it know why this meeting is taking place. You are here to witness a Ritual to declare Draco the heir of the now defunct Noble and Ancient House of Black, which was left without an heir due to Sirius Black's passing. We also know, for a fact, the reason this is happening, and that is so that Voldemort may line his pockets with unlimited amounts of gold, and use it as such as everyone recognized the man that Sirius Black was.
Narcissa paled, not actually thinking Harry knew the purpose there. It was quickly replaced, however, as she recovered and said, "Then you would also know that the entire second part of that is hearsay, and slander, and you are not able to prove anything."
Harry glared at the woman. "I know, for a fact, that your husband is a Death Eater that has, and will continue to, support Voldemort. Maybe I was wrong about your son, and for that I will apologize, but make no mistake, that is what this money is going for.
I also recognize the fact that yesterday Draco Malfoy did have the claim that he is now playing on, and that yesterday, Draco Malfoy would have received the estate and all the lands, properties, and wealth therein.
However, as I understand it, the laws pertaining to Blood Heirdom refer to the last legal heir receiving the money from an estate if, and only if, there is no other mentioned heir, or in this case heiress."
Pansy glared at the word 'heiress' and decided to make her presence known. "Of course only you could and would misinterpret the law that way Potter, it states that 'if the will named anon-eligible heir of the family, then the next male heir would receive the congregate."
Harry looked at Vladimir. He nodded of course. Harry thanked her for her correction and said, "The problem was, and remains, that in his will Sirius Black named a half-blood as his heir, my wife."
Tonks stood up here and placed her hand on Harry's shoulder. He nodded to her. "As of yesterday, I was an unmarried daughter of the family Black, named alongside an unnamed heir in the family because of Sirius' fugitive background it never passed. Harry Potter was Sirius' one legal heir, he had filed for adoption, but was denied on the fact that he was, and remains after his death, a criminal.
Sirius Black was, and remains, Harry Potter's legal godfather. He knew, when the adoption was declined, however, that Harry would be unable to receive the honored fifty-one percent of the family and left it to me. I was ineligible due to my status as an unmarried daughter, and Aunt Narcissa, by her own admission, sees me as family to her disowned sister, Andromeda Black Tonks.
Due to that, I would have been ineligible at the time of the original reading. That is where the dilemma comes. Had Aunt Narcissa not had Draco here apply for the ritual, they would have inherited the family fortune, am I correct Vladimir?"
The Goblin nodded and said, "That is correct, however, am I to understand they are no longer eligible, Ma'am?"
Tonks confirms this by saying, "As of yesterday, I am now eligible to retain my and my husband's part of the inheritance. As of yesterday, Lord and Lady Potter took over as the heads of the Potter family, and we have come for what is ours by right."
Draco laughed. "What does that mean, Potter? Just because you married, we want proof that you did the deed, Potter! Did you bong your wife, or did you just play around a bit and call it something else? I bet you couldn't even use it if you wanted too, growing up with those muggles must have ruined you or something!"
Harry glared at him, about to respond rudely when the Headmaster stood up. "The floor recognized Albus Dumbledore."
He thanked the Minister for Magic and looked at the group. "Late yesterday night, before they left to Auror Tonk's apartment, I gave them the Consummation Conformation Potion, and had it set up where several different Consummation balls would notify us when they performed to the duration of their marriage.
The results, as you can see here, clearly show that Harry James and Nymphadora Tonks Potter did, in fact, and consummate their marriage as according to what is required by magical law. They are, in every way, husband and wife, and eligible according to this counsel's rules, to receive their inheritance. I move that the motion set by the Malfoy's is receded, and the will issued by Sirius Black is read."
"I second!" shouted Amelia Bones, who, as far as she counted, showed that Harry and Tonks would win by a bare margin, as long as no outstanding votes came in.
Narcissa glared at her and to Draco. He stood and said, "You cannot do this! Who is to say the potion was not tampered with? Who's to say she was even a virgin last night and eligible to go into the marriage!"
Harry looked at Tonks and said, "Dora, change for me."
She nodded at Harry, and glaring at Draco for forcing her husband into the situation closed her eyes, into whatever his version of the perfect female would be. She had tears running down her eyes as she felt her face reshape, her eyes, and hair changed color. She grew in height, and her breasts shrunk. She looked at Draco and said, "The perfect woman, according to my husband."
Then, she apparated. Harry glared at Draco and said, "Be glad that I think her base form is the most perfect form in the entire world, or I would have to kill you for what you've done. Now my wife thinks that I, as all of the other males in her life, have only used her for one thing, and that was to change her appearance to what they thought they wanted.
Now, Headmaster, Minister, if you're finished and I've proved successfully that I'm in love with her, may I leave until you make your decision? Either way, I have business with the other Goblins concerning my parents will, and I need to find my wife as to prove that we are married."
Leaving the room, Harry let out a sigh. He looked around the room, and though he knew she wouldn't be there, more like somewhere crying, not having seen her new form.
Harry could only hope that she would believe him when he told her he most enjoyed her true form, because it was her wholly and truly.
Of course, first, he'd actually have to find his wife, and let her know with all that he could that he was honest about what he said. Walking towards the Goblin-in-Charge, Harry asked to see the wills of James and Lily Potter, and asked them stored in a travel pouch. The Goblin nodded and produced the necessary documents, had Harry sign, and thanked him for his business.
Business had, too, resumed as soon as he exited the door. The Goblins, excluding Tailpipe who wanted nothing to do with them, all were working merrily.
Soon, about ten minutes later, Dumbledore exited the room with a large smile on his face. He looked at Harry and nodded, as if telling him that all was well again in the wizarding world. Harry sighed, not knowing what to do, until the Headmaster suggested that he simply tries to contact his wife at her mothers. Harry glared at the man, suggesting it was his fault for not warning him of what had occurred.
The Headmaster smiled as Harry placed his hand to the floo powder. Asking Vladimir for a bit of privacy, Harry smiled when the Goblin granted his request. Not knowing who, exactly, to call for Harry simply said, "Andromeda Tonks".
His head spun for a second before she answered, in a voice that showed Harry that he was very unwanted at the moment, "What can I do for you, Mr. Potter?"
Harry gulped loudly, before gaining his composure. "Yeah, can I talk to my wife, please?"
She glared at him, as if blaming him for the entire situation, while he was not at fault at all. "I'm not sure my daughter wants to speak with you right now, Mr. Potter. I, myself, am sure that I would not want to speak with you after what you did!"
Harry was shocked. He tried to speak, but the words just would not come out. Not even a day and he'd broken the bonds, and everything else that meant anything else to him. Nodding his head, Harry sighed and said, "Alright, tell her when she wants to speak that I'm at the one place that I know where I stand."
Andromeda did not understand, but did promise him that she would pass the message on. Harry took one look at his wife, whom he just barely caught a glimpse of and smiled as he did notice she was in her base form... so he was confused.
Why... why did she resent him so, why did she hate him? He had hoped that she would enjoy the fact that someone thought she was perfect, but apparently he had screwed up everything. Wiping his eyes, Harry barely recognized the fact that Vladimir had passed on the will to Harry, and asked what he needed.
"A portkey, set for my home."
The Goblin nodded and asked Dumbledore for the portkey. The man nodded and said, "Portus!"
He smiled at Harry, and handed him the portkey. As the item pulled him, the first glimpse he had was of two beady eyes staring at him in disgust.
As tears stung at his eyes, Harry was so separated from reality that he never noticed the people in the room, or the dropping of a plate. He never noticed, as his tears threatened to pour, the synchronization that four people of above average height, and two with regular height could put as something out of the ordinary happened.
That was, until of course, he was hit in the back of the head, spilling him over onto the carpet. Thinking carefully of the irony of the situation, Harry said, "Hello Uncle Vernon."
"What of it boy, not coming home last night, but then coming home in your freakish ways? How dare you, boy, just assume that you were welcome back here!"
"Aren't I uncle, haven't my friends and my headmaster told you exactly why I must stay here?"
The man nodded. "Just go up to your room. No breakfast, no lunch! You'll stay there, only let out for the bathroom! What if Marge had been here? The freaks would have come and 'bliverated' her memory!"
Walking up the stairs to escape his uncle's useless rant, Harry barely heard the first word, "And we better not find out you found yourself a cheap bag, no sense in letting your freakishness run wild!"
As soon as his head hit the pillow, he cried.
In another room, in another house just an hour's drive away from their current location, the Lady Potter lay in her old bedroom crying. Her mother, across the room from her, was patting her back in a way that showed she understood. "Why mum, why of all things did he have to ask me that?"
The woman sighed. "Nymphadora, you're just married. We didn't give you a chance, a real chance to get to know each other. We forced you into a marriage, and told you to consummate that marriage, after leading you into it. He didn't know, he didn't realize that you would be stuck in that position unless he released you from it. It is his hearts desire to see you in your natural form, not with the manipulations, the toning, or even the shaping of your breasts to be bigger than they were. You could have had, naturally, the biggest and fullest set of heaving bosoms that the world had ever seen, but you didn't. So, you were given a gift, a gift that most people would pull hair to have.
Harry... he wanted to see you without your gift shaping you. He wanted to know that his wife was her own person without the added necessity that was caused by people fearing her. So, he asked you to be your own person, unconsciously. He asked you to be yourself, and you couldn't take it, Nymphadora."
She cried, her sobs wracking up a wealth of emotions in her mother that she had not seen in a while. Her heart cried out to her husband, who she had hurt in her foolish, emotional spat. She cried, her grief welling up inside of her like a volcano about to erupt. Her emotions, a roller coaster. She had to figure out a way to tell Harry how she felt, but where would he have gone?
Deciding that at the moment, she was tired and needed to sleep as apparition while you're distraught would not help you anymore than the person you were looking for. She laid down, hoping for a few minutes silence, before she fell into the deep pits of sleep.
When she woke the next morning, she noticed a soft difference than the night before. She soon realized it was the fact that her husband was not next to her, nor did she know where he had gone after she had walked out on him.
Bustling downstairs brought her out of her stupor, and grabbing her wand, Tonks made to walk downstairs. She saw a hair of red locks, and immediately recognized her mother, who was making coffee.
"Mum?" she asked quietly. Andromeda turned to her and, almost immediately, her happy smile turned to a frown.
"Nymphadora, you're supposed to be asleep! Why are you out of bed?"
She sighed and said, "Couldn't sleep. I woke up because the bed felt different, and then remembered that I went to bed without my husband. Look at me, mum, a day and I'm already falling in love with is fallibility, his nurturing ways, and the fact that he tries.
Did he tell you anything of where he was going?"
Her mom looked confused for a second before nodding. "It was... a weird statement Nymphadora, he went to "the one place that I know where I stand."
Tonks fell into a heap as her fears were confirmed. She walked over to the floo, to distraught to go anywhere else, and called out Wisteria Walk.
Her mum, of course, didn't know what to think. She knew Wisteria Walk had a squib, and a couple of other people in the know there, but there was no record of a family there, or anywhere near there either.
Wisteria Walk, in Surrey, her mother checked, was full of names. The first, and only she recognized, was that of her great cousin Arabella Figg.
As Tonks arrived at Wisteria Walk, Mrs. Figg was in the midst of making coffee. She looked at her visitor, and smiled.
"Hello Tonks." she said with an accusing stare. She blushed and said, "Hello cousin Arabella."
"What brings you here, Tonks?"
"I need to get to Privet Drive, Arabella. I think that Harry went there today when he was distraught. If so, I shudder to think what's going on there."
She nodded and handed her a bucket. "This will mask your magical signature, so that Harry is the only one monitored. Go ahead and get it on, girl, I don't have all day!"
She applied the cream, not bothering to correct the woman as she had not received the Daily Prophet in a few years.
Alike in so many ways, yet different in others.
Finally, after all that work, she had reached her destination. Inside, the clattering of an argument between uncle and nephew that could be heard by her auror ears, was beginning to take place. Words like, "freak", "marriage" or her personal peeve, "not good enough for a woman, any woman".
So, when the door came off its hinge, the crowd turned to see her. Immediately, she could see the fat boy, Dudley, get stiff as a rock at site of her. Vernon, it would seem, wasn't to far off, though Petunia did look as if something had crawled from under a rock if that made her feel any better.
She looked at Harry directly and touched her ring, watching his reaction as she twisted it, his eyes closing as he thought she was removing the rings in disgust.
Then, she kissed them. Both of her rings at once. She held out her arms for her husband, who ran over and grabbed her into an intoxicating kiss that shook rafters and broke windows, the pitch was so off the charts.
Vernon, it seemed, couldn't handle the fact that Harry had a literal goddess in his arms, and made to shove him out of the way for his son, but Tonks glared. She showed him her ring and asked Harry where the room was he stayed in.
He gave her a look as if to say, "Yeah, right" but then with dawning understanding led her upstairs. He turned to the right as if to enter Dudley's second bedroom, but was stopped and told that since the room was fit for two, that they could take the guest room and that he could clean all of the material out.
They agreed and retired for the morning, intent on renewing their bond and resuming their marriage.
