Chapter 7: A Talk With Professor Lupin
Emily
stayed in the hospital wing for most of the weekend, with Helga visiting her
from time to time. She knew that her sister was going to get into trouble for
what had happened, but she wasn’t going to tell her that. On Sunday night Emily
was finally able to leave the hospital wing and return to Gryffindor tower.
However when she arrived Percy cornered her.
“How could you
allow yourself to get points taken off,” he said. “Five more points from
Gryffindor for being stupid.”
Emily burst into tears and went up to her dorm. Helga glared
at him.
The next
morning Helga had Divination, the first time that she would have the lesson
with Professor Trelawney. The Divination teacher had them working on different
shapes and writing down what they meant. In Transfiguration most turned in
their essays on Animagi, or wizards that could change into animals at will.
Helga was told that she had to do it and turn it in my Friday. When the bell
rang the Gryffindors headed up to lunch and Helga saw her father again talking
to Professor Dumbledore.
“I can’t believe
that Flitwick graded my paper wrong,” Emily hissed when she joined her.
Helga turned to her sister.
“What.”
“He graded my paper
wrong,” she repeated. “He gave it a ninety instead of the hundred that it
deserved. He said that I needed to stop being a Know-it-all.”
Helga felt like grinning, but decided against it.
“So what are you
going to do?”
“Demand the ten
points that he robbed me of,” Emily said.
Helga shook her head.
In Care of
Magical Creatures Hagrid had them doing Flobberworms, which had to be the most
boring creature in existence. Several Slytherin’s complained about the lesson,
but Helga liked them.
“So where are you
heading off after dinner?” Emily asked, who had returned from Defense Against
the Dark Arts.
“I have stupid
detention with that dumb Muggle Studies professor,” Helga said. “I have no idea
what she’s going to make me do.”
“Maybe lines,” she
said.
“Maybe,” Helga
muttered.
When she
finished her dinner she went up to the professor’s office and knocked. When no
one answered, Helga started to get mad. Why wasn’t she here? Helga decided to
return to the Gryffindor common room.
“What happened?”
Emily asked when her sister returned early.
“She wasn’t there,”
Helga said. “And I’m not waiting for Filch to catch me and give me detention.”
Emily had a bad feeling that she was going to get into
trouble for this.
The next
morning there was a note that arrived by owl. She took it and saw that it was
from Professor Cloud. She opened it, read it, growled, and then left. Five
minutes later she knocked on Professor Lupin’s door.
“Enter,” he called.
She opened the door and saw that Professor Cloud was in
there with her father. She glared at her Muggle Studies Professor who returned
it.
“There you are,”
she snapped. “Your daughter didn’t show up for her detention last night. I’m
taken fifty points from Gryffindor for that.”
“Miss Cloud, there
is no proof that she’s my daughter,” Lupin said. “Anyway, I think that you were
dead drunk at the Three Broomsticks last night. So I don’t think that you have
any right to talk.”
She glared at him and he returned it.
“I think you need
to leave,” Lupin said.
She screamed bloody murder and then left.
“I’m sorry about
missing my detention sir,” Helga said. “But I really didn’t know that she wasn’t
there.”
Her father put a hand up to stop her explanation.
“Helga, you don’t
have to make excuses for her,” he said. “She wanted to get dead drunk, that’s
her right. She could have at least informed you that she wouldn’t be able to
make it. I restore the fifty points that you lost.”
“Thanks, sir,”
Helga said.
He nodded and then told her the reason why he had summoned
her.
“I know this is
something that you don’t want to hear, but I think that your mother made a
mistake when she said that I’m your father. There is no way that I can be since
it’s against wizard law for me to even think about getting a woman, muggle or
witch, pregnant.”
Helga stared at him, not sure if she understood.
“But, my godfather
was the one that told me,” Helga protested.
“Then he had it
wrong,” Lupin said.
Helga felt tears welling up and she knew that she was close
to crying. And then she did what any self-respecting cat did, she ran away.

“You did WHAT,”
Severus screamed when Remus told him what had happened.
He stared at her.
“I told her the
truth,” he said.
Severus glared at him.
“Oh that’s great,
Mr. I’m so smart,” Severus hissed. “You never thought to think about doing the
Paternity Test to see if she happened to be telling the truth. You just threw
what she had been told in her face and made her run away, crying. Gods, I
thought you were the intelligent one of the four.”
“Don’t insult me,
Severus,” Remus growled.
“Oh, I’m not,”
Severus defended. “I’m just stating a bloody fact. Of course, I could do the
test, if you want.”
“No,” Remus
snapped. “I don’t want the blood test.”
And he walked out.
Severus,
however, wasn’t going to give up that easily. He was a Slytherin at heart and
if Remus wanted to act UnGryffindor and not see what he has, then what was it
his business. He grinned, it was his business. He decided that it was about
time that do a very Slytherin thing, interfere.
