Chapter 7 Nina’s story
In the kitchen at Falls Farm, three men and one woman stared in shocked silence to where, moments before, Jane had stood. It was the sound of the teapot dropping from Aggie’s hands and smashing on the stone floor that brought them out of their stunned silence.
Albus was the first to speak. “Oh dear. I was not expecting that.”
“Albus? Where…?”
The Whites were still silent. Aggie’s mouth kept opening and closing like a fish, but nothing came out.
Pete decided he had bet keep quiet too since he couldn’t figure out if he had really seen Jane just disappear or if he had imagined it.
“Severus. You must go now. Find her. Take her back to Hogwarts.”
“Find her Albus. How the Bloody Hell am I meant to find her when I don’t know where she bloody went. And what bout these two?” He wanted to kill the pair of them.
“Only you can find her Severus. She is connected to you somehow.”
“And these two?”
“I shall deal with them and then I shall meet you back at Hogwarts. Go Severus. Hurry.”
Severus looked at Albus for a moment and then turned his gaze to the man standing at the side of him. “Very well, but if I do not find her, what then?”
“You will find her!“ The old man said.
Severus concentrated for a moment on the image of Jane in his mind. Then he too disappeared.
When Jane opened her eyes she was laid on her back looking up at the sky. As she moved her head to the side she felt dizzy. Very slowly she tried to roll over onto her side and discovered that pain seemed to be coming from everywhere in her body. Still she forced her self to turn over and bracing her self against the wall in front of her she managed to get to her feet. She did not know what had just happened and she didn’t care. As she looked down at herself she realised that she looked a mess. Jane still didn’t care. Peering round, trying to see where she was she saw a sign that said Platform 9¾
. Limping across the platform trying to find a way out she discovered that there wasn’t one. As she leaned against the wall next to her to try and get some control over herself she fell backwards and wet through the barrier onto Kings X proper. No one noticed as she got up and wandered aimlessly through the throngs of people. If someone knocked into her she just carried on. The events of that morning coming back to her. She didn’t want to remember. She wanted to pretend it hadn’t happened. ‘Oh God! They knew now. They knew and they would hate her.. Jane did not blame them for hating her. She hated herself. So why should they be any different. It saddened her to think that she would never see them again. Poppy. Poppy had been so kind to her. The nurse had shown her affection. Jane had never experienced that before from anyone. The old man, Dumbledor, he was nice to he too. He gave her yellow sweets that made her pull funny faces and never looked at her unkindly. Then their was the Vampire. What was it about him that made her feel so safe? None of the student seemed to like him. He was bad tempered and never seem to like anyone else. But something told her that he was good. That deep down inside of himself he did care, about all of them. She also thought that he cared for her. Even tough he tried not to show it. He had promised her that he would keep her safe. Told her that her Uncle would not hurt her while he and Professor Snape was there. But then she remembered the expression on his face when he had found out the truth. She knew that they hated her now and that she could never go back there. Wherever there is. So Jane wandered about the station. Finally facing up to the fact that she was really only good for one thing.
When Severus had apperated he had not got a destination in mind. He really had no idea where to start looking for her. The only thing he thought of was her. Not where she was but how she looked. How she had been when she was in the same room as him. The look of mischief on her face, the look of innocence, the cheeky expression she sometimes had. Worse, was the trust she had shown him openly. Why the hell did she choose to trust him? Severus didn’t know but he felt that he had taken that trust and crushed it in his fist. Just before she had apperated she had looked into his face. He knew that he had worn an expression of utter loathing. Loathing and disgust for her Uncle and what he had done to her. Then it dawned him. ‘Circe.’ She must have thought it was directed at her. As Jane had done, he saw the sign for Platform 9¾
. Although he knew that she was not here, he checked any and every place where she could have hidden. Once he was certain that he had checked everywhere, twice, he transfigured his clothing into Black jeans and black sweater, and stepped through the barrier to find that the station was packed with muggles. “Bugger! How am I supposed to find her in amongst this lot?” But find her he would. It was fortunate that he was so tall. It made it easier to see over the many heads of the many people the were milling around the place. The trouble was that Jane was only a small, a slip of a thing really. ’I’ll never find her if she’s in among this lot. If she is here at all.’ These thoughts and more went through his head for over an hour as he wandered around the station looking for her. Once, he thought he had seen her but as he approached the girl turned round. He could not help the disappointment he felt when he realised it was not Jane. He was considering giving up and finding somewhere so he could Apperate away from here, maybe if he concentrated hard enough he would find her somewhere else when he saw her. She was walking towards the exit alongside of a man in a suit. Her head was down and her hands hung limply by her sides. As he followed them the man in the suit bend down and said spoke to her. A nod was her only response as they continued walking. Severus picked up his pace. He dared not run and alert her to his presence. If she Apperated again he did not know if he would be able to find her again. As he came up behind them he could hear the man talking quietly to her.
“You better be a good screw girl. If I am going to be paying for a room then I expect my money’s worth.”
She nodded again.
“And you do everything I tell you to do. I’ll make you sorry if you don’t.”
‘What the Hell was she doing?’ Severus had heard more then enough to realise what was going on but he did not want to believe it. He put out a hand, grabbed her arm and turned her to him. “Jane.”
She did not look at him, just stood there.
“Do you mind. This one is mine. Go find your own fuck.” The suited man spat quietly at Severus, trying to get his own grip on the girl.
Standing a good head taller then the man, Severus had no problem looking down at him with his most intimidating scowl. “The young lady is NOT available. Nor will she be at any time in the future.” Keeping a grip on her arm he dragged her out of the doors and headed for the nearest quiet ally he could find. Leaving the man in the suit glowering and wondering how the hell he had let his promise of a good fuck get away from him.
As Severus pulled her into an alley and made sure that it was empty he asked her, “What the hell were you playing at? Do you know what that…what he expected you to do?” He shook her a little as he spoke.
Jane didn’t answer, did not respond. She just stood with her head down.
“Miss…Jane.” He spoke more softly now. “Did he……..did he do anything to you?” Severus did not know if he was prepared for her answer, but he had to know.
Their was still no reaction from her.
Keeping his grip on her arm, he Apperated them back to the gates of Hogwarts.
He did not loosen his grip at all, there was no way he was going to risk her running off or disappearing like she had at that place she had grown up in.
Because it was late afternoon when they arrived and classes were over, there were quite a few students about outdoors. Severus put on his best scowl.
When they saw their dreaded Potions Master practically dragging the girl along beside him they stared, wondering who it was. Wonder soon turned to amazement when they saw that it was Jane. She looked to be in a sorry state. Her hair was mussed and even with her head down they could see that her face was dirty and grazed down one side. She was back to wearing those baggy jeans and loose sweatshirt again. They too were filthy. And she only had one trainer on. Her other foot was bare and she was limping. They also stared at Severus. He had forgotten to transfigure his jeans and jumper back to his usual austere robes. The girls thought he cut quite a dashing figure in muggle attire.
Neither of them noticed, as they walked up the step to the main entrance. Albus was there, waiting for him and looking very relieved. Poppy was with him and rushed towards Jane clucking like a mother hen. She had been very distressed ever since Albus had returned alone and told both her and Minerva what had happened.
“Jane. What on earth possessed you to just disappear like that? We‘ve been worried out of our minds. Where have you been?” When she got no response she turned to Severus.
“Severus. Wherever did you find her?”
“Shall we go inside first Poppy.” It was clear that Severus was not going to give any answers on the doorstep. Especially in front of the students who had now gathered nearby, hoping to find out what was going on. Although if truth be told, most of the fifth, sixth and seventh year girls were now more interested in eyeing up their Potions Master. They were pleased to see that he had a really nice bum, amongst his other assets.
He took no notice and continued inside and headed towards the headmasters office, not releasing his grip on Jane.
Nobody noticed Draco Malfoy, watching from behind a suit of armour near the main staircase. ‘I think it is time to write that letter to my father.’
Only as the office door closed behind them did he relinquish his grip.
Poppy immediately took charge of her. Guiding her away from the others and running her wand up, over and down the girl. Jane let her. Standing where she had been put. Eyes downcast, hands at her side.
The others watched as poppy finished her examination.
“Well, apart from some scrapes and a few bruises your fine, physically.” She added as she uncorked a phial of healing potion and held it out to her.
Severus walked over to them. “Jane, take the potion and drink it.”
She did as she was told and no more. Just drank it and stood, holding the phial at her side.
“She has been like this since I found her. She will do whatever you tell her to, but nothing further.”
“But why? What is the matter with her?” Minerva was as worried as the others as to what had happened to Jane.
Severus did not answer. “Kali.” he called.
When the house elf arrived Severus told her. “Kali. Jane needs you to look after her for a short while. You are not to let her out of your sight for even a second. Do you understand?”
“Kali is understanding Sir. Kali is not taking her eyes off Miss. I is looking after her well.”
“Good. And she will need to be told to wash and eat, otherwise she will do nothing.”
“Yes Sir. Kali is taking Miss to her bed and take care of her.” “Don’ts you be worrying Miss. Kali is taking care of yous.” Kali took Jane’s hand and they both disappeared.
Once Jane and Kali had gone the four adults Albus, Snape. MacGonagall and Pomfrey all sat down to discuss the days events.
Albus cleared his throat. “I suppose that we should start with Miss Manohel’s story and take it from there.”
“Who?” The three all asked Albus at the same time.
“I will explain. Nina Gweneth Manohel, is the true name of the young lady we have all come to know of as Jane White. She is seventeen as she has told us. One year after the attack on James and Lily Potter, There was another attack, probably random, by a group of die hard Death Eaters. This attack took place when Nina was almost three years of age. While they were torturing her parents in the living room Nina, woken by the noise, made her way down stairs. She was probably still half asleep at the time. She must have seen some of what was going on because she fled into the kitchen and out of the back door where the Death Eaters had entered. She had apparently hidden herself in some shrubbery at the bottom of the garden. It wood seem that around that time there was another in the area. A Mr Alfred Anderson. Brother to Agatha White. Nina knows her as Aunt Aggie. Alfred had been hanging around the area for a while, watching the comings and goings of various households in the neighbourhood. He was what I think Muggles call a house burglar. On this particular night he had been hiding in the shadows and watching the activities of the house next door. When he had seen the group of masked figures suddenly appear in the back alley he had lain low. He did not know what they were up to when they went into the Manohel’s but he knew it was not good. He was going to scarper when he saw the little girl come running out of the back door and into the bushes. Alfred may have been a thief but he was not a cruel or unkind man. He could hear the child crying and waited to see if her parents would come to get her. He did not know how long he waited but when the masked and hooded figures came back through the door and one of them could clearly be seen carrying the head of a woman, he knew that there was no chance of this little girl surviving if they got hold of her. As the group were all turned towards the house and one of them was chanting something while pointing what he assumed was a stick, he grabbed Nina and ran down the back allies until he reach his car. He bundled the child inside and drove off. As soon as he felt he was a far enough distance away from the area he stopped the car. He dare not go to the police as he was already under suspicion. But what was he meant to do with the girl asleep on the back seat of his car. He could not bring himself to just dump her and he remembered that his sister Aggie and her husband were unable to have children of their own. That is how he came to take her to Falls Farm. He arrived in the early morning and presented them with a ready made daughter. They would love her and look after her. Or so he thought. They took her in and changed her name and soon became bored with the novelty of having a three year old tearing around the place asking for her mummy and daddy and crying when they told her that her name was Jane, not Nina. Pete got his mean streak back and Aggie backed him up. They were careful with her while she was at primary school. The teachers there n
Thought that she was a late developer because she was so quiet and withdrawn. They never questioned it. She didn’t cause them any bother and always did as she was told. They did not look any further as long as she was not bothering them. That is how it was until the age of ten when Nina, or Jane as she was known, was put to work on the farm. That is when the real abuse started. The child suffered such heinous atrocities from a very young age, against her body and her mind it is a wonder that she is not insane.”
The three in the room with Albus did not speak. Minerva was sniffing and wiping her eyes with her handkerchief. Poppy was sobbing openly at the side of her.
“I shall not go into details of the abuse that Miss Manohel suffered. It is too harrowing and would serve no purpose at this moment. Severus, I believe that you already know much of what has transpired during her life with the Whites.”
“I do headmaster and it is not something that I would wish to discuss. If I am truthful, I do not believe that I could.”
“Oh Severus. How do you know? Surely she has not told you openly has she?”
“No Minerva she has not. While we were at the Whites this morning Miss White…Miss Manohel and I were in contact with each other, and I had the Misfortune of her memories being transferred to me. A kind of involuntary reverse Legillimency that I have not before experienced. I assure you it was not pleasant.”
I believe those memories were reinforced when Mr White had the audacity to speak of them were they not Severus?”
They were headmaster.” Severus was glad that Albus did not repeat the accusations made against himself by White when he was raging. Only a sick being would rape and abuse a child like that.
“Well I’m sorry but I must go back up to the infirmary. I have two other patients in there and that poor child. What must she be thinking at the moment.” With that Poppy left. Truth be told, she could not bare to hear any more.
“If you do not need me Albus, Severus, I too shall take my leave. I honestly do not think I could take any more tonight. That poor, poor child.”
“No Minerva. You go too. Severus and I have just a few more things to discuss. We shall see you at dinner”
“Thank you, Albus, Severus.”
The Potions Master nodded and Minerva took her leave.
“Shall we meet back here after dinner Severus?”
“Severus sighed but he knew their was still much to discuss. “Very well Headmaster.”
The two friends headed down to the Great Hall. Both had a lot to think about during this evenings meal.
