CH 7 A fiery temper
Lou watched as the tabled miniaturised to the size of a matchbox, and then grew back to it’s normal size. “Awesome.” She told him, reaching out and knocking on the table to see if it was still solid. “So my stuffs been made little like you did there?”
“It has.” Severus told her.
“Wicked.” She told him with a grin.
“There was no wickedness involved I can assure you.” Severus told her. “It is a simple spell, nothing more.”
Remus chuckled. “Wicked means good Severus, it’s how the young ones speak these days. I’ve heard Harry and his friends use words like that a lot.”
“That is ridiculous. Why say the opposite of what one means? It does not make any sense.”
Lou started laughing. She thought it was funny that he was flummoxed for a change instead of her. Severus was a real stuffed shirt as far as she was concerned, but she didn’t dare tell him that, not now.
“I don’t suppose I could have a bath. Oh and do you have a washing machine? No course you don’t, no electric, you do have a washing line though don’t you? At least then I can hang my clothes out to dry if I wash them by hand. Where’s the washing powder?” She asked as she limped out of the room and headed for the kitchen.
Severus and Remus were once more left looking at each other puzzled.
“What on earth is she talking about Severus?”
“I believe she intends to start washing her …erm smalls in the kitchen sink and then wishes to hang them out to dry.”
“Urgh!” Both exclaimed together as they headed to the kitchen.
Lou was rummaging under the sink looking for washing powder. Unable to find any, she resolved to use normal soap, at least there was a bar of that on the sink and she’d used it often enough before. “I’m going to see what needs washing, have you two got anything that needs doing?”
Severus’ eyebrows nearly hit the roof. “If you think I am letting you loose on my personal attire, you are quite mistaken, besides, there is no need to do your own laundry, the house elves see to that.”
“Ew. Them heads at the bottom of the stairs. You’ve lost me now.”
“Laundry is collected each evening and taken for laundering. It is returned the following morning, cleaned and pressed. All you need do is to leave it in the hamper in the bathroom.”
Lou was stunned, not sure if he was being serious or not. She wasn’t too sure if she liked the idea of someone else handling her clothes either. “So they’re real then, those elf head things in the hall?”
“They are only heads and quite dead.” Remus told her. “It is the live ones from Hogwarts that do our laundry for us.”
Lou shivered at the thought that those heads once had bodies and actually lived. “Bloo …crikey.” She said. “Erm, can I have a bath then, I mean, one of them things wont come in if I do will it?”
“Actually, “Severus told her “there will need to be one present with you if you wish to bathe. You cannot get your leg wet, so a house elf will have to be in attendance to assist you.”
“What? No way. I can manage on my own.”
“It is house elf, or one of us.” Severus told her ominously. “Take your pick, personally I would prefer you chose the elf.”
“I’ll settle for a good wash thanks, I don’t want anyone in with me.”
“Suit yourself, but you will need to bathe properly fairly soon, you are starting to smell.”
Lou looked desolate. She’d never smelled, not ever. Not matter how rough things had been , she’d always found some way to get herself and her clothes clean. Letting her head drop she started to cry.
“Oh Merlin.” Severus rolled his eyes. He’d been lying when he told her she was starting to smell, he just wanted to encourage her to take a proper bath. She would feel better for it.
Remus scowled at Severus and moved toward Lou, putting an arm round her shoulders.
She stiffened and shrugged him off.
“You do not smell Lou, so don’t think for a moment that you do. Believe me, if you had any kind of an odour about you, I would know about it.”
“Why did he say that? I’ve always kept myself clean.” She told him, sniffing.
“He …we … just think you would feel better if you were to have a soak, Severus has some marvellous healing potions that you can use in the bath, and there is a large range of spigots to chose from. I’ve seen muggle baths, they’re not nearly so grand as we have here.”
“H ..how would you keep my leg and hip dry if I did get a bath?”
“Magic of course. That is why you would be better with an elf. Severus or I would need to be in the bathroom with you to maintain the spell that will keep water from your injury. A house elf would cause much less embarrassment for all involved.”
“Oh this is just to weird, are they safe, these house elf things? Do they bite?”
“Extremely safe, you have nothing to fear from them. Their only wish is to please.”
Severus stepped to the fire place and threw in a handful of floo powder. When the flames turned green he stuck his head into them, causing Lou to gasp, and shouted “Hogwarts kitchen.”
After having what sounded to Lou like a one sided conversation, he pulled his head from the flames and she was horrified to see a small, grey skinned creature step from the flames. It had big droopy ears and wore what looked like a tea towel, it’s feet and hands were long, with sharp claws, it had skinny arms and legs and large eyes.
Lou stared at it and grabbed hold of Remus when it spoke.
“I is Moon Sir. How can I be helping yous?” The creature asked Severus as it bowed.
“”I do not require you Moon, the young lady requires a bath and has an injury that must be kept dry. If it is not, there will be dire consequences. Your task is to ensure she can bathe and keep the wound dry at the same time.”
“Oh yes Sir. Moon is doing that. Not letting the young miss get her poorly wet at all Sir.”
“Good. Go run the bath, I shall bring her up in a moment.”
The elf disappeared with a small ’poof’, leaving Lou more nervous than ever.
“What was that?” She asked them, her eyes almost as big as the elf’s.
“That Lou, was a house elf.” Remus told her. “Really, you have nothing to fear from them, her name is Moon and she’ll do everything she can to make you comfortable.”
“Come.” Severus told her as he stood waiting at the kitchen door. “The sooner you are finished in the bathroom, the sooner I can check your leg and apply a fresh dressing.”
That served to remind Lou for the first time, that he’d seen her most private parts each time he’d checked her leg. The cut went right up to the edge of her hip bone and the top of the bandage was wrapped round her lower belly. He couldn’t do that with her knickers on.
With a face as red as a lobster, she walked through the door to the bottom of the stairs.
When he picked her up and carried her up the stairs to the first floor landing, she kept her eyes averted.
“Is something wrong?” He wanted to know.”
“No.” She answered with a squeak.
Severus frowned, carried her into the bedroom and deposited her on the bed before sitting on the bed opposite, his hands clasped between his knees. “Something clearly is. All of a sudden your face has become red and you cannot look me in the eyes. What is it? Is it because I told you that you were beginning to smell? It was only my intention to encourage you to take a bath, not to offend you.”
“No. It’s just that ..well you’ve seen … you …where the bandage is, here.” She pointed at her right hip. “You saw my …you know.” Lou sat picking at her sleeve, mortified that she was having this conversation.
“I see. So you think the fact that I saw your bare backside is cause for concern?”
She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know, it’s just embarrassing that you did.”
“I assure you, the site of you bottom did nothing for me whatsoever. The only area of your body that held any interest for me is the site of your injury.”
“What? Why? What’s wrong with my bottom?”
“I give up. I really do.” He grumbled as he stood to leave. “I shall be up later to see to your leg.”
Remus found it hilarious when Severus told him of the conversation he’d just had with Lou.
“Trust me Severus, you can never win an argument with a woman, when it comes to certain parts of their anatomy, it’s a no win situation.”
“That is ridiculous, she is nought but a child, why on earth would she care what I or anyone else thinks of her …parts?”
“She’s more than a child Severus, she’s a teenager. You of all people should know what they’re like, being head of house at Hogwarts.”
“I do not deal too much with the more personal side of female problems Lupin. They see either Pomfry or another female staff member for that kind of thing, or discuss it amongst themselves.”
“Well you’re going to have to deal with it now whether you like it or not. She’s your responsibility Severus, so you better get used to it.”
Severus glared at the grinning Lupin. It was not funny, not funny at all.
Lou meanwhile was fighting with the elf about who should be the one to remove her clothes. “I can take my own damned clothes off, I don’t need any help.”
“The master is saying I should bathe you, and that is what I must be doing.”
“He didn’t say you have to take my clothes of for me. Get of me.” She yelled as the elf tried to remove Lou’s jumper.
Frustrated, and afraid of incurring the masters wrath, Moon snapped her fingers and Lou found herself sitting naked on the bed. All she had on was her bandage.
“Hey, you cant do that, I haven’t even got a towel.” She protested as she found herself floating toward the bathroom. “Arggghh” She moaned indignantly. “I can walk you know, I don’t need to be floated about.”
Downstairs the two men were standing in the hall listening, smirks on their faces as Lou ranted and yelled at the poor little elf who was doing her utmost to obey Severus’ orders.
When Albus and Kingsley Shacklebolt walked in the front door to see them both grinning and the heard the commotion from upstairs, Albus raised an eyebrow.
“What on earth is going on?” Albus wanted to know.
“Bath time is what is going on Headmaster, with assistance from a Hogwarts elf. Louhi is not too impressed with the creatures hands on approach.” Severus told him while struggling to keep a reasonably stoic expression on his face.
Kingsley was quick to grin along with them when he heard the kafuffle and cacophony of swear words that was drifting down the stairs. “Sounds like you have a right little she-devil on your hands Professors.”
“You don’t know the half of it.” Remus told him “The girl is wild at times.”
“She will hopefully be calmer when she is done with her bath. I have instructed the elf to use a healthy dose of calming potion in the bathwater. A sleeping draught in her evening cocoa and we shall hopefully get a decent nights sleep.”
“Kingsley looked at the Potions Master in surprise. “You’re slipping potions in her drinks?”
“We have no choice Kingsley.” Remus told him. “She doesn’t trust us, the only way to get her to take anything is to sneak it into her food and drink.”
The four men moved into the kitchen and were just settling down to coffee when a rather bedraggled looking elf appeared. “The miss is ready for you now Sir.” She told Severus. “The miss is not pleased with Moon Sir, but I is thinking she is less pleased with you. She is saying some terrible things she is be doing to you and the other Sir for this.”
“Thank you Moon. Never the less, you will stay here while the young lady is in residence. There are certain aspects of her care that it would not be appropriate for Lupin or myself to deal with.”
“Yes Sir. Moon is staying to look after the miss. Is you needing me anymore tonight?”
“Yes, you can come and help me see to her leg, I am not in the mood for another battle with her this evening.”
Once Severus and the elf left the kitchen, Albus burst out laughing. “He really has his hands full doesn’t he?”
“It’s not that funny Albus.” Remus told him. “She tried to have another conversation with Mrs Black this evening. When we stopped her she called Severus and me …well lets say the word was not very complementary. We had to hold her down eventually and she only stopped when she received a spanking. I’ve never known anyone with such a fiery temper.”
“Really? I think you have Remus.” The Headmaster said, his eyes twinkling.
“Well yes, Sirius did have a bit of a short fuse I admit, but I tell you Albus, that girl is so unpredictable, you don’t know what she’s going to say or do next. Sirius’ temper had nothing on her. I wouldn’t blame Severus if he put sleeping potion in every one of her meals.”
“That bad eh?”
“Well no, maybe not that bad Kingsley, she can be quite pleasant at times, it’s just when she loses her temper that the sparks fly. Oh and man, do they fly.”
“Would not any of us be the same, if situations were reversed? This must be terrifying for her a lot of the time. She has clearly not had a stable upbringing and that does not help any, plus she has been taking care of herself for quite a while by the sound of things. I also noticed she had a letter in her personal belongings that still has an unbroken seal on it. I have a feeling that all she truly knows about her background is what she told us herself, that her father was a criminal and her mother abandoned her. It could be that the unopened letter holds information that would benefit her if she were to read it.”
“Are you suggesting we look Albus?”
“Not at all Remus, though I do think she should be encouraged to open the letter. I am in no doubt that she is Sirius’ child, no doubt whatsoever. We can confirm this when we introduce her to Kreatcher tomorrow.”
“Oh Merlin no. You can’t subject her to that Albus.”
“I am afraid we must Remus. Just as Harry was.”
“If he submits to her rule Albus, it is going to cause a lot of problems as far as this place is concerned. It might put young Harry’s nose out of joint too. He thinks this place and the Black fortune is his.”
“I know Kingsley, but it cannot be helped. Even I cannot overrule whatever decision she makes about this house when it is proven that she is Sirius’ daughter. All we can do, is hope to take custody of her until she becomes of age. Severus must also have some say in all of this, since he is the one with the most authority over her at the moment because of the life debt. Until he has repaid it, they have a bond that cannot be broken. She saved his life at great risk to her own, even though she did not know him.”
Upstairs Lou was laid on her side on the bed, she was wearing a pyjama top and nothing else as Severus tended to her injury. She clutched the hem, trying to hold it down between her legs while her face burned red at the elf sat on the bed in front of her.
“It is healing nicely. You will have a permanent scar, there is nothing I can do to prevent that, but it will not be as noticeable as it would have had you been treated in a muggle hospital.”
“It doesn’t matter, I can live with it. Can I put my bottoms on now please?”
“Go ahead.” he told her, heading for the bathroom to wash his hands.
Lou couldn’t put her bottoms on quickly enough. The elf had provided them for her. Lou didn’t have nightwear, preferring to sleep part or fully dressed, in case she needed to be up in a hurry.
When Severus emerged from the bathroom she was standing by the door waiting to go downstairs for her supper.
