LEECH
Sweet child of mine, I let you down
Look down on me, bear not a frown
Forgive that I did not protect you
Against my wish, I failed, its true
Forever I will bare the blame, of losing you to heavens plain
Yet know my darling that my love for you will cause me endless pain
My child who at my breast did nurture
You were my hope, my dream of future
So here I stay, bereft of all
That I hold dear, my child I call
Your name for all time in my heart
That you would know we’re not apart
Inside of me is where you are
Eternally you’ll be my star
In heaven shining bright on high
A lustrous light, a breath, a sigh

Chapter 7
Some angst and explanations in this chapter.
Kathy was led from the cabin, the two powerful wizards walking either side of her, though she didn’t know they were wizards, towards the biggest castle she’d ever seen in her life. Actually, it was the only castle she’d ever seen, but still, it was imposing enough to stop her in her tracks. Staring up at the impossibly large building in total amazement, she momentarily forgot her troubles, the million and one questions temporarily shoved to the back of her mind, her fear and heartbreak put on hold for the interim. “Bloody hell.” She whispered.
Albus stopped and waited for her to catch them up, where as Severus ignored them both and continued up the steps and headed straight for the dungeons. He needed a large fire whiskey, followed by a shower and another fire whiskey. Maybe he’d follow that with a few more before having a spot of supper and going to bed.
He was more than rattled when Albus entered his private rooms with the woman in tow.
Glaring at the Headmaster, he downed the shot and stalked into his bedroom without a word. He slammed the bathroom door behind him, relieved himself in the toilet and undressed.
The shower felt like heaven on his skin. He took his time, hoping Albus and the chit would be gone by the time he emerged from the bedroom again.
When he was dry, he pulled on a nightshirt and his dressing gown, shoved his feet into his old comfortable slippers and walked back into his living room. The sight of Kathy and Albus sitting at his table eating supper did not exactly endear him to the headmasters cause.
“Albus.” He said in a low voice. “Do you not think it preferable that the young lady be taken elsewhere and settled down for the night, rather than being forced on m…? I am sure she is in need of rest.” He amended. A warning glint in his eye.
“Mrs Ripley was in need of sustenance Severus, and assures me she is quite well enough to listen to our explanations as to why she is here.”
“She may be Albus, but I am not.” Severus remarked, downing his second promised shot of fire whiskey. He took the bottle as well as his glass with him when he moved to his favourite chair by the fire and slumped into it.
“I took the liberty of ordering supper for you, if you would care to join us.”
Severus’ eyebrows shot into his hairline as he shot from his seat. “Join you?” He yelled. “In case you have forgotten, these are MY private quarters, and I would prefer that they remain so. Now if you would be good enough to take Ka… Mrs Ripley and escort her to wherever you intend to ensconce her, I would like my privacy back.”
Kathy’s eyes widened when Severus began to shout, his obvious agitation putting her on guard. She pushed her chair back from the table and edged her way to the door, unsure what the man would do next. “Can I go home now?” She squeaked.
Both heads snapped in her direction.
“Obviously not.” Severus barked. “Since it is clear you have nothing to go back to.”
“Severus that is enough.” Albus glared at his colleague warningly.
Kathy stared at Severus as his words sunk into her brain. For the half hour she’d been in these rooms, she’d almost managed to forget what had occurred put her in this situation, now it all came flooding back and she sank to her knees. Visions of her beautiful little girls flooding her mind. “Elizabeth. Gwen.” She choked. “They’re babies. They’re just babies. How could… why do they… Just babies.” She choked again.
Severus swallowed hard, a strong surge of guilt overtaking him as he looked at the huddled form on the floor.
“Mrs Ripley, Kathy, I am sorry. I did not mean to… “He couldn’t say any more. Her grief was too much to witness and he turned away.
Albus shot a glare at his back then turned to the woman. He pulled her to her feet and led her to the chair that Severus vacated moments before, drawing the young woman into his arms. He offered no words of comfort, nothing he could say would ease her grief.
Neither he nor Severus had previously known the full events leading to Kathy’s capture, and even a time turner would not allow them to return and bring the children while they were still alive. Instead, she would be forced to see them die over, perhaps in a different manner, but it would happen regardless. Such was the nature of a time turner. Even bringing Kathy forward in time had its risks, but at least they were aware that her present self was still alive somewhere, or would have been had they not changed events in the past.
Eventually she cried herself to sleep and Severus was forced to help the drained, older wizard to his feet and assist him to the sofa.
“This is going to be more difficult than I first realised Severus. She unwittingly draws power like a sponge draws water.
“Only if you allow her skin to come in contact with your own. I made certain to wear gloves on my travels.” Hagrid though did not appear unduly affected; I must assume that is because of his size, rather than any innate ability to resist her Leeching. She still drew strength from him, but he was unaware of it.”
“I did notice that yes.”
“I wonder how her husband and children fared; do Leech’s only draw from magical folk?”
“No, from what I have read, a Leech can draw strength from anything that lives, be it animal, vegetable or mineral. So long as it holds some kind of tangible life force, a Leech can draw from it. Her children shared her blood; hence, they were immune to her… ability. As for her husband, the only explanation I can offer is that her love for him somehow prevented her from drawing from him. According to her file, her mother was a milkmaid, hence when she was carrying Kathy; her constant contact with living bovines was her salvation. Her father was a farm labourer and he too was in contact with living creatures. It was only after the child was born that she drained first her mother, and then her father. That was the reason she was placed in the orphanage, with her mother dead and her father too weak to care for her any longer. The other children at the orphanage soon grew wary of her. They didn’t know why they always felt weak when she played with them, but the connection between fatigue and the young girl soon became apparent. Tom Riddle was her only source of comfort during her childhood, he discovered that he could not hurt her with his own unique powers as he could the others, thus she intrigued him for a while. Eventually I believe he just got used to her being around, and possibly, she was a source of companionship for him too. You will have noticed he did not make actual contact with her unless it was absolutely necessary.”
“Actually he did, though not skin to skin. That is what confirmed my decision to wear gloves whenever I was around her. Are there others, like her I mean?”
“Not that I’m aware of. Leechers have been recorded over the centuries, born to both muggle and magical parents. The main objective has always been to keep them out of the wizarding world, if they survive that is. Most perish in the womb, or shortly after birth. The few that have survived have usually lived short, miserable, lonely lives.”
“Yet Kathy… Mrs Ripley defied those odds, even going so far as to marry and produce offspring of her own.”
“She is a rare phenomenon yes, though not the sole one of her kind to do so. Unfortunately it is the way of our kind to ignore, despise, or destroy that which we cannot control or do not understand, as such very little is written about the full capability of such beings. A small entry in an old text by Livel Moorcraft mentions that a Leech may be taught to take control of his or her ability. They have always been considered malevolent beings in the past, and if one were discovered living in our world, he or she would be hunted down and slaughtered. It is imperative that we keep her identity secret Severus. She carries a strong magical signature, as all her kind do, but she cannot perform magic in the way that you and I can. Hers is a different kind of power. She can hopefully be taught to draw only what she needs, from alternative sources to humans, and also how to bestow much needed life force upon others when necessary. It is my hope that when Tom Riddle recognises her, he will welcome her with… open arms so to speak.”

Well, you know pretty much what a Leech is now, so I hope there will be plenty of comments and questions about it.
