The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 7
Lucy thought constantly about the man with the black eyes. “Gran you said that bloke teaches potions, well I’ve never done anything like that. What other things don’t I know?”
“Ah Lucy, there is much you don’t know, too much to tell over a pot of tea. We need to work hard over the summer if you’re to learn enough to enable you to attend Hogwarts.”
“That’s another thing, what about my exams. Gran I want to go to university, I want to be a vet. This Hogwarts place, well it doesn’t sound like the kind of school I’m used to, what I need.”
“Hogwarts is nothing like you are used to Lucy. This world you are in is nothing like you are used to. We have a long road ahead of us girl. It should not have been this way, you should have grown up with your own kind. You are an intelligent young woman, the reports given me by that ridiculous woman that insisted on visiting me show that. You take after your father in more than looks. Grindelwalds have excelled in magic for generations, you will too. Lets go home.”
Severus watched the two women from the entrance to Knockturn Alley. He was keenly interested in this new addition to their little community. He could hardly believe she had the nerve to stick her tongue out at him like that. He was going to make her suffer for that when she was under his charge. He wondered if Dumbledore knew of Lucy Grindelwald, it was unlikely. It brought a smile to his face that he would be the one to impart this news to the old wizard. It almost made up for the accident in his classroom. Well maybe not that, but close.

“I erm, ran into Hetty Grindelwald In Diagon Alley this afternoon.”
Albus’ eyes became suddenly curious. Severus didn’t normally take the time for idle chatter, and he certainly did not make a habit of discussing his visits to the apothecary.
“Oh, and how is dear Hetty these days?”
“Not as dead as I previously assumed her to be. She asked about you.”
Albus nodded and folded his hands on the desk. His Potions Master was deliberately withholding something from him, and was obviously enjoying the fact he knew something Albus didn’t. “How nice, what did you tell her?”
“I told her you were much the same as always. Any chance of a cup of tea? I find myself rather parched.” Severus maintained what he thought was an innocent expression, but was unable to hide the gleeful sparkle in his eyes.
With an impatient sigh, Albus summoned an elf and ordered tea and biscuits. “Would you care for a brandy with that Severus?”
The Potions Master nodded, he knew the good stuff would be offered eventually.
The two slowly sipped brandies and a chatted about the poor quality of potion ingredients until Severus was willing to impart to Albus his little revelation.
“Actually, Hetty was not alone.”
“Oh, and her companion?”
“A young lady. She was introduced to me of course. Her name is Lucy.”
Albus scowled at his friend. Severus was being deliberately obnoxious. “And?”
“This brandy is very good.” Severus held out the empty goblet, smirking as the grumpy older wizard poured him another. “Thank you, most kind. The young lady is living with Hetty apparently.”
“Living with Hetty? But the woman’s a recluse.”
“So much so that I personally thought she died years ago.”
“So this -Lucy, what do you know about her?”
“Quite a lot actually, though I will have the opportunity to learn more when she begins classes after the summer holidays.”
“Severus, have mercy please, what aren’t you telling me?”
Severus smirked, he’d finally got to the old man. “You mean about Lucy I take it. Well, originally I thought she was much older than her apparent sixteen years. She has long, blonde curly hair, green eyes, quite pretty in fact. Dresses disgustingly, muggle attire. Rather outspoken little brat too. Acts like a muggle, knows her potion ingredients. Can perform wandless, non-verbal magic, but seems surprised about it.”
Albus waited, a questioning look on his face as he waved a hand at his companion, encouraging him to say more.
“Ah, you want every detail. Well, she was rude, nervous, but refused to be cowed by me. She wants to go to university and train to become a vet. Something to do with animals I believe. Has a great deal to learn about all things magical, so clearly she was not raised in our world. Oh, and her last name, Grindelwald. She is Hetty’s granddaughter.” He sat back, took a good swig of his drink, and smirked at the utterly shocked expression on Albus Dumbledore’s face. “I thought that might shut you up.”
Albus downed his brandy in one. “No. It cannot be. Hetty only ever had one child, and you know of my past with him. He never married, I would have known.”
Whether he did or not, it does not change who she is. The girl shows a strong resemblance to any image I have seen of Gellert Grindelwald. There is no mistaking her ancestry. As for her mother, we did not get as far as discussing the finer details of her parentage.”
“I don’t understand Severus. From what you say, the child has possibly had a muggle upbringing, but the girl would at least have been sent a letter on her eleventh birthday. Someone would have visited and explained things to her guardians. Certainly the name Grindelwald would have caught my attention at any rate. I would never have missed that name.”
“It seems you did. I take it you will be paying Madam Grindelwald and her granddaughter a visit in the not too distant future?”
“What? Oh, yes. I think it best you accompany me when I go.”
“Me? Why?”
“Because you have already made their acquaintance, besides, I want you there.”
“And I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to reacquaint myself with the chit. She is a rude, argumentative and offensive little girl whom I will have the displeasure of teaching when she arrives next term, I have no wish to extend that period of association.”

A week later and Lucy was in a flap. “Gran none of this is gonna help me pass my exams. I’ll never get into university at this rate. Do that again, it’s so cool.”
She was frustrated at the lack of education she was used to getting, at the same time becoming more embroiled in what Hetty was teaching her. She could now move things with her wand, and without it if she concentrated hard enough. Not that she did so in front of her grandmother. She wasn’t doing too well with this transfiguration thing either, at least not with her wand. Her charms were coming on nicely, and her potions were reasonable, if not perfect. Arithmancy was the oddest branch of mathematics she’d ever undertaken, but she was quite intelligent and took to it readily.
The only reprieve she seemed to get was when she was out on the hills with Maxi.
They soon became firm friends, and even though he was a muggle animal, he was extremely intelligent, protective, and territorial. As far as he was concerned Lucy was part of his pack, and it was his job to protect her at all costs.
Hence when two figures apparated on the road at the front of the house while Maxi and Lucy were playing fetch, he dropped the ball and raised the hackles on his back, growling deep in his throat.
“What’s up Maxi, seen a grouse?”
Maxi barked loudly in the direction of the two wizards heading in their direction.
“It’s alright Maxi, it’s just a couple of blokes out for a walk.” Lucy dismissed them with barely a glance and grabbed the ball, throwing in the opposite direction to the two men.
Only Maxi didn’t go after the ball, instead he placed himself between her and the men drawing nearer. He bared his teeth, snarling viciously.
“Albus, I don‘t think that beast is too pleased to see us.” Severus withdrew his wand.
“Hetty’s dog, yes he is rather protective. Just approach slowly, I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
“You’re sure, you mean you don’t know? Albus have you seen the size of it? He makes Hagrid’s dog look like a pup.”
“Maxi stop it. Sit.” Lucy ordered.
Maxi obeyed, but still growled and showed his teeth menacingly. He was tense and ready to spring into action at the slightest hint of danger from these two humans.
“Oh shit it’s him. The one I told you about Maxi. Tall, dark, and sexy as hell, but with a distinct lack of civil personality. I wonder who that is with him.” Lucy took a firm grip on Maxi’s collar, even though she would never be able to hold him of he decided to take a shot at these two.
“Don’t come any closer, you’re upsetting the dog. It’s best you keep to the road.” She called to them.
“We are not here for the simple pleasure of walking Miss Grindelwald, we are here to visit with your grandmother.” Severus told her. “Might I suggest you control that hound of yours, otherwise I may find myself forced to take alternative action.”
“You lay one finger on this dog and it’s me you’ll have trouble controlling.” She told Severus.
“Why you insolent li -”
“That is enough, both of you.” Albus said sternly. “Miss Grindelwald, as Professor Snape has already said, we are here to visit Hetty, I for one would appreciate it if we were allowed to arrive with all our body parts still attached.”
“Is gran expecting you? She doesn’t like visitors and she said nothing about expecting guests.”
“She is indeed expecting us. We are willing to wait, if you prefer to confirm this with her before we proceed.”
Lucy eyed the strange old man. He was something, that was for sure. Long white hair, an even longer beard, bright blue robes that matched his eyes. He seemed oddly calm and unafraid of Maxi, and she felt a certain -sincerity from him.
“Okay, but wait here. If gran says you’re okay, I’ll keep Maxi out the way.”
