Hermione stared at Draco with a look of disbelief and shock. “You are going to help me escape?”
Draco stared hard at the ground, “Yes. Get far away from here. Voldemort plans to use you to get to Potter. We knew that Potter would come to rescue you from my filthy pureblood hands. The news of your defection should have reached him by now. We expect him to rush headlong into Hogwarts,” Draco said brutally, his voice cold and detached. The only obvious sign of the Draco that she knew was in that glimmer of self-loathing in his icy eyes.
“You knew that the whole time, obviously. Gods, I have been a fool. Did you even care that I was betraying myself with my parent’s killer? Have you no sense of fucking decency?” whispered Hermione, the pain lancing through her.
“No, I am a Malfoy,” Draco whispered back, pulling away from her.
Hermione’s hand cracked out and connected with the side of his face. Her eyes were black with hatred. Her pupils dilated in rage as she stared across at him. Draco did not blink, but he felt the strength behind the blow. He needed her to hate him. If she didn’t, she may stay and he couldn’t have that on her conscience. Not now.
“The potions, you set that up? To pretend that you were forced to tell the truth, to think I was beautiful. Do I really disgust you? Is that it? Now, you just feel bad?” Hermione sucked in a painful breath as she realized how much he had lied.
The fucking potions, he had shortly forgotten about those. Draco sneered suddenly.
“Yes, I thought it was clever, to make you think I was in love with you, using a “truth’ serum. It was easy enough to fake the results. In addition, you messed up with the potion with Snape. That was when I realized, you wanted me still. As for my feelings? You were an assignment, a filthy mudblood that I had to be with to catch the Potty head and Weasel. In truth, you disgust me, you Filthy Mudblood,” Draco spoke very deliberate and cold. His eyes bore holes into the floor.
Hermione’s eyes were dry and burning from the lack of tears and her throat was closing up. She could not play ball with the Deatheaters. It hurt too much. Draco had been lying to her and for whatever reason he had a guilty conscience now. Hermione knew not to look a gift horse in the mouth.
“Voldemort will kill you, if he finds out you helped me,” Hermione spoke suddenly after sitting quietly for a moment. “I don’t want your death on my conscience.”
Draco looked at her stunned and humbled for a moment. After everything he had done to her, she still was trying to protect him. He was a fucking fool. Draco fisted his hands and growled at her. “It won’t be.”
“I may be just a filthy Mudblood, but I still won’t leave your well deserved fate. Even though every touch you ever gave me was a lie, even though you have hurt more then any other person on this earth,” Hermione shuddered and stood up, staring down at him with a cold look.
She fingered the pouch in her hands. Back to Ron and Harry. She could not even imagine a thing now. She felt strange, and displaced.
Draco was staring defiantly at her from the other side of the room. His pale hair was tousled and his silver eyes hooded, his firm lips set in a flat grimace. Hermione felt an ache where her heart was and her belly had a stone in it.
“I loved you,” Hermione words sputtered painfully from her lips and she gasped holding her belly.
She clapped a hand over her mouth and the tears finally came. This was really happening. She gripped the pouch in her hand and dug her nails into the leather. Ron’s bracelet lay just inside, a reminder of what real love was. It gave her a small measure of strength and she bit her lower lip, tears raced down her pale face.
Draco could not look at her, he felt numb but he rationalized that this was for her own good. He was guilty of everything she said. A tiny lie among the many truths seemed insignificant now. He longed to scream and smash the room to pieces, but they had very little time. He was being watched more then likely and he had to act fast.
“Go Hermione, NOW!”
Hermione did not have to hear the words twice. She ran from the bedroom and walked carefully towards the common room door.
She could hear banging outside the common room door. They were coming for her. Hermione closed her eyes.
…
Notts banged on the door again, “Oiy! We know you are in there,”
“Yeah, open up Gel,” hissed Professor Carrow.
“Stupid, bloody portrait,” Blaise yelled from the other side of the door.
Millicent walked down the corridor and ducked into the hallway. BUGGER, Zabini was there with the Carrows and NOTTS, stupid pillock.
Millicent swallowed her apprehension and sauntered up to Blaise.
“Ahem…” She cleared her throat. “Pardon me.” Millicent said the password, under her breath, and the portrait swung up to the Head Boy & Girl’s Common Room.
Zabini glowered at her and Notts and the Carrows pushed her aside and rushed in. The common room was empty and they searched the bedrooms. Draco was sitting at his desk with an unconcerned look on his face. He skimmed through the Seventh Year Potions book and then looked up at them.
“Hey now, do I go barging in your bloody room?” Draco arched an eyebrow and slammed his book shut. Notts stared at the imperious look of outrage on Draco’s face and he looked back at Blaise. “ I thought you said he would be gone, with her.”
“Gone with who, precisely?” Draco replied, as he stared glacially at Blaise.
Suddenly Blaise turned to Notts. “I was mistaken. I guess, the ghost was wrong.”
“GHOST?!” shrieked Carrow, with a look of anger. “We are running up here because of what a damned ghost said?! Who is going to explain that to Voldemort? Not me! You saw what he did to Dolohov when they thought they had Harry Potter and he was wrong.
Hermione heard them screaming at each other and she felt anxiety grip her body until she was shaking. The way they were talking made her realize that she was a great fool to believe that any of them had changed. The closet that she had hid in was not exactly a brilliant move but she had very little choices.
“Err… Didn’t I say it was a ghost that saw her trying to escape?” Blaise’s eyes stared to the ground, glazed over with fear.
“I saw it too, clear as day,” chimed another female voice, Millicent stepped in from the common room. “Hermione escaped using a port key, while me and Draco where talking in here.”
Draco’s eyes widened and stared hard at Millicent. Blaise did not look up from the floor.
The Carrows hissed and Notts turned around. “We must tell Voldemort, if we want to see any mercy on this day. We allowed the filthy mudblood to escape,” Notts growled under his breath and stormed out with the Carrows in tow.
Millicent stared hard at Draco once the others left.
Blaise stood slack jawed and Millicent gave him a bemused look. “The Imperius? Charming. Where is Hermione?”
Draco shrugged and stared hard at Blaise. He waved his wand and Blaise’s eyes grew cloudy and blank.
Suddenly Blaise came to life. “Millie? You believe me don’t you? The ghost said he saw Draco and Hermione escape,” Blaise looked confused.
Draco scowled slightly and pushed Blaise towards the door. “Well, now that you’re wrong, can you please fuck off?”
Millicent patted Blaise on the back of the head. “Good boy, just run along now.”
Hermione shuddered slightly in the closet. Blaise sounded so dead, so empty. Millicent caught the slight movement from the closet and she frowned.
“Blaise will try to blame you again later,” Millicent said bluntly, moving towards the cabinet and she jerked open the doors, and looked at Hermione. “Out. I have a port key, its destination is Spinner’s End, from there you can find your own way,” Millicent handed her a bag from around her shoulder.
Hermione looked at her with a suspicious expression and Millicent rolled her eyes. “Or you can just stay here and become a punching bag for Voldemort,” hissed Millicent as she thrust the bag into her hands.
Hermione grasped the bag like a lifeline and she opened the drawstring part, inside lay a simple golden key, she knew innately that this was the port key. She reached down for the key and grasped her hand around it. Her eyes landed on Draco and she painfully closed her eyes. It was too soon for her to see the tear that had snaked its way sdown his face.
Hermione disappeared suddenly and Millicent turned to Draco with a solemn look.
“You did the right thing,” she said quietly, and she placed her hand on his shoulder.
Draco shrugged off her hand and turned towards the window. He folded his arms and stared grimly out into the snow-covered grounds by the Whomping Willow.
“It would be a first time,” Draco replied, and he ignored the tears that burned in his eyes.
