Draco’s face looked as if he had been Petrified. Not a muscle twitched in that perfectly sculpted, slender face. His skin looked bloodless, as he stared intently at Ron waiting for the inevitable.
“Syl. Where?” Harry asked in nearly a whisper.
Ron gave Draco a look that seemed to beg the Malfoy heir to help him shield Harry from the truth, or to at least tell him how to soften the blow. Draco could only continue to stare empty-eyed at Ron.
Garnering his courage, Ron steeled his voice and entered into report mode, as if he was recounting the facts of any other case.
“His body was dumped on the steps of St. Mungo’s.”
“Is he…?”
“He’s alive. Just. He suffered a few bruises, a broken wrist and ankle. He had some minor hexes hit him as well.”
Harry, at a loss for words looked down into the wood of the desk’s top as though the very meaning of life was housed there. Draco could see Harry’s chest expanding and contracting painstakingly slow, as if Harry were deliberately trying to slow his own heart rate. Draco asked the question Harry couldn’t seem to voice.
“Is there more?”
Ron glared at Draco, unable to reason why he would force Harry to hear such news. Draco just shook his head minutely, letting Ron know there was no point in holding back.
“He’s in a coma at the moment. On first inspection they thought he was just unconscious, but a more thorough scan revealed that he has suffered…mental trauma. He’ll be moved to the Janus Thickey Ward once he’s stable.”
“Cruciatus?” Draco asked, knowing well how easily it was to use that Unforgivable to turn someone into a turnip.
“The Medi-Wizard that first assessed him thought so, but the second scan suggests a Legilimens induced this condition. They’ll be more definite once the Psycho-Healers see him on ward four.”
Draco was perplexed. He had never heard of Legilimens being used to the point of placing someone into a coma. Typically once the needed information was ripped from the mind of the victim the spell was discontinued, leaving the person a bit disoriented and with a heck of a headache, but otherwise unscathed.
“That spell doesn’t work to induce coma, Weasley,” Draco insisted.
“It does when used repeatedly on a resistant person who has had some Occlumency training.”
At that Harry lifted his gaze to Ron, horror and regret shining in those green eyes. Ron knew what Harry was thinking that if only he had not begun teaching Syl to Occlude or better yet completed the training perhaps the young Auror would be whole at the moment. Draco’s head swiveled back and forth between the two Gryffindors, watching their silent communication.
“They…mind raped… Syl. Oh, Merl…Ha! Ha-ha, ha. Ha…” Harry stuttered out the beginning of his thoughts, which quickly descended into a laughing fit.
Draco was dumbstruck. Harry had just learned the closest thing he had to a younger sibling was possibly a vegetable for life and he was laughing. Draco trained his focus on Harry’s eyes were wide open and un-crinkled as would be expected with true mirth. His pupils were dilated and unsteady. Draco could almost see the grief and sorrow trying to breakthrough the drunken glaze of rage and mania.
All of a sudden the temperature in the room spiked, Draco felt his scalp become damp with sweat and the nape of his neck grow hot being covered by his long, thick braid. Ron’s upper lip and brow began to perspire. The hearth, which had been extinguished by Ron when he came through the Floo, erupted in wild, high flames. The stained glass in the arched windows of the study began to rattle, and Draco could barely make out Ron screaming at him to help subdue Harry as his ears were assaulted by his lover’s continuing mad cackle that grew louder by the second, as if the Auror had unconsciously cast Sonorus on himself.
Ron moved slowly away from the door towards Harry, wand gripped tightly in his hand, yet held down almost flush to his thigh. He could only hope that he could get close enough to Stupefy his friend before he crumbled the Manor down on top of them. Just as he lifted his wand to take aim, Draco threw himself in the path between Ron and Harry.
“Don’t!! You’ll provoke him, idiot. Are you trying to get blasted to Gringotts and back? His magic is unstable. We don’t even know if Harry recognizes us. Let me try.”
Ron gave Draco a small nod, all the while his eyes never leaving the laughing madman that was once Harry Potter.
Draco fought the urge to fall down and cry at the sight of Harry doing a very unwelcomed impersonation of Bellatrix on a good day as he inched his way closer to the desk. Harry’s laughter turned desperate and dissolved into true tears as he approached. Draco had a fleeting thought that Harry’s tears looked as thought they would scald him if he got too close.
“Harry, baby, listen you’ve got to pull your magic in. Please, Harry listen to me. Pull it back, baby.”
Draco was pulling out his best stuff, however simple. Calling Harry baby almost never failed. No one had ever called him baby, even when he was one. Harry had never in his memory been cuddled or cooed, kissed or tickled. Whenever Draco wanted something badly, or wanted to soothe Harry of a particular hurt, he called him baby. He only hoped the love in that word registered in his lover’s head this time.
Harry looked at Draco, the laughter still trying to break through the tears and sobs. There was recognition there, along with exhaustion and sadness. Draco’s heart cracked a little at the sight.
“Draco? Syl. He… No. He’s…Draco?”
Harry’s voice was small and he was making no sense, but the windows stopped rattling and the flames in the hearth leveled out to a normal height. Sensing that this was as near safe as they would get for the moment Draco made a quick decision.
“Bolley!”
A wrinkled, ghastly, toothless elf appeared wearing a clean lime-green toga with the Malfoy crest emblazoned on the front.
“Yes, Master Draco? How may Bolley be of service?”
“Bolley, Master Harry.” Draco nodded in Harry’s direction.
The old elf took a look at Harry who was by now shaking and dry sobbing, but still with wide, dilated eyes that made him look on just this side of mayhem.
“Certainly, sir,” the elf replied before pointing a crooked finger at Harry and casting a silent spell. Harry’s eyes immediately rolled back in his head before he slumped forward and almost fell to the floor before being levitated by the elf.
“Bolley shall see Master Harry to bed. Will there be anything else, sir?”
“No, Bolley. Thanks.” Draco let out a sigh of relief as he watched the hunched elf dodder out of the study, Harry’s limp body floating behind as if hung up on marionette strings.
