Hermione knuckles turn a snow color as her body shook with anger as she held tightly to an angry letter from some random witch. Attach to the letter was the same picture of her “cuddling” up to Remus. That damn article was nothing but garbage it was an outrage that people believe Rita Gossip Skeeter. The article itself did little to detract from an innocent and friendly embrace by the werewolf. Rita Skeeter made it seem like Hermione and Remus were intimately involved and were lovers. The thought of that witch smirking as she wrote these lies were enough for Hermione to plan sweet, Slytherin style revenge. What was a shot to the heart was that the only people who knew of this soul mate problem were in the Order. They would never reveal those secrets.
Now, the whole wizarding world knew. Ever since then, Hermione and Remus have both received upsetting letters and howlers. The filth of the article about Remus and her being secret lovers was enough for Remus to received hate filled howlers about him being a cheater and preyed on her when she was a child. When the first howler snapped in his face, accusing of these lies that Skeeter brought, Hermione saw the look on his face. It was watching a building collapse into itself, leaving only behind ruin and rubble.
Hers were no different, some of the howlers accused Hermione was being a slut and played with the hearts of wizards for joy. After the tenth howler, Hermione simply sent them off a small box in a cupboard, all to suffer a burning fate. But still, the article itself was enough for Hermione to start hexing things to bits. Mostly any copies of the Daily Prophet she saw.
As the Weasleys went back to the Burrow, Mrs. Weasley tried to have Hermione stay with them. Hermione did not feel like going back to that place, not while Ron was giving her the cold shoulder treatment. He was such a child at times. Instead, she took up the invitation to stay with Harry at Grimmuald Place for the summer. Only real problem was that Ginny took advantage of Harry being here and they spent most of their time in his room, leaving Hermione alone.
Hermione sighed, easing back in her chair. The only real sanctuary she had in here was the library. Abet smaller than the one at Hogwarts, Hermione took in comfort in the silence. When Hermione first walked in the library, she had hoped that the library would have some Dark Arts material. At least something about the marriage ritual that she and Remus how involved in. But all she found was many references of a soul mate was and this was already what Hermione, and most muggles, knew about.
“YOU DISGRACING, LOWER THAN WORMS FILTH DARE TO ENTER MY HOME AND TAINT MY ANCESTORS HOME AS WELL?”
Hermione gave a started as she heard the loud and shrilling voice of Mrs. Black’s portrait. She jumped up from her seat as soon as she heard the wail of a crying baby. She ran through the corridors, her wand raised. Hermione skidded into a halt, her shoes scuffing up the old floorboards as she saw Remus trying to hush a sleeping child in his arms. Hermione flicked her wand and the heavy curtains were drawn back over the screaming portrait. Only the muffled screams of outraged were heard.
Without the curses from the portrait did little to calm down Remus. Hermione craned her head to see him attempting to coo and sooth the baby’s weeping. The baby’s puff of hair flashed into a rainbow of colors from purple to daisy yellow to jasmine green to even tomato red. When the werewolf noticed her, his caramel eyes sparkled with a plea for help that he could not speak over the cries of his troubled child.
Hermione ran over and took the little infant from the arms of Remus and gently wrapped her arms around Teddy. Hermione hummed softly and began to rock him softly. Teddy had quieted but still cried. The brunette eased Teddy onto her left arm as she pulled out her wand and turned a spare button into a pacifier. Once Teddy’s eyes grew large, his little chubby hands snatched it and suckled on it like candy. It was finally a few moments before Teddy was silent as his mind was focused on the little sucker.
Hermione handed Remus back his son before she led into the living room, fearing that one more noise would set both Mrs. Black and Teddy off. The werewolf nodded in thanks and sat down in over worn couch, the cushions were too thin to be comfortable. Hermione saw the dark bags under the man’s eyes, either from the stress from that awful article or that the full moon was a weeks away.
Hermione sat across from his father in chair with its cushion having missing patches of leather. “Remus, what brings you by?”
“I had to get away from those howlers,” Remus groaned, bouncing Teddy on his knee. “And to ask Harry if I can stay here for a few days.”
Hermione frowned, “Is something wrong?”
His cinnamon colored locks waved in the air as he shook his head in dismay. “My landlord is threatening to kick Teddy and me out. He claims it is the lack of money but…”
Hermione was going to ruin Rita Skeeter all over again, even if it meant locking the woman in a jar for a year. She made it harder for Remus to have a normal life. “What about Andromeda, can’t she help you two?”
He shook his head, “She tried to have us stay but, unfortunately Andromeda does not have the proper facilities where I can transform. I know that Sirius cleaned out some cells for me whenever I was here.”
“I will talk to Harry about you and Teddy living here. He will no doubt agree to it. As will I.”
Remus twitched in his seat, crossed between hugging her or staying down. “You live here? What about the soul mate….”
Hermione held up her hands, “I have come to terms that we will not get rid of this predicament so soon. And it pains me to say this but; Skeeter made a good point. Are we really married or just bound by our magic?”
At this, the former professor frowned in deep thought. “I don’t really know for certain. I have not received any word from the Ministry about my marital status as of late, I guess neither have you,” Hermione nodded. “But, now thanks to Miss Skeeter, we might as well be.”
Hermione huffed, crossing her arms. “I don’t even know how she heard about this.”
Remus’ sun kissed cheeks colored in shame. “Maybe do on my part. I forgot to cast a silencing charm over us.”
Shaking her head wildly, her eyes widen in shock. “Don’t say that, Remus! It isn’t your fault. If we have to blame anyone, it should be Dolohov. He is the one who caused all of this.”
“Why he would do that is beyond me.”
The room fell silent as both similar minds were in deep thought. The crack of the fireplace eased into the air. Hermione’s mind raced over the possible outcomes and theories of why a Death Eater would do this. Death Eaters were the means to evil, only relishing in chaos and sang for blood. To bind two people’s souls were something that would bring happiness in two people’s life. As Charlie explain it as a marriage and marriages were always full of joy and love not death.
Teddy broke the silence when he started to cry and squirm in his father’s arms. Hermione got up and walked over as Remus rose from his seat to take care of his son. “I think he is tired,”
He nodded, “He has not gotten any sleep and neither have I for the matter. The howlers come in all sorts of the day.”
“How about I show you to your old room where you can both sleep in peace? There will be no howlers interrupting you, I promise.”
His smile full of thankfulness and the way his hazel eyes sparkled in the fireplace sent Hermione’s heart fluttering like fairy wings. A little patch of pink blossom on his cheeks once he realized he was staring in her eyes. Remus hid it poorly with a cough.
Hermione led Remus up the stairs to a large enough room for both him and Teddy. Against the wall, a queen size bed was propped against it. The faded purple sheets were tucked under two pillows, one overstuffed and the other thin as a muggle magazine. The fabric making up the canopy used to be a good white color but due to the lack of care and upkeep, it turned into a listless brown color. A little desk for one looked out through a window, right next to a hip high bookcase filled with the bare books. On the other end was a door which Hermione could only guess was the closet.
“Sorry about the lack of care, Remus. I will talk…or rather ask Harry to speak to Kreacher about fixing it up later,”
Remus smiled at her, “Its fine, just as long as it is quiet and peaceful.”
The floors creaked and groaned as Remus explored his new room. He conjured up a white crib with orange flowers along the legs and posts. Remus used a scrap of fabric to make up blankets and a pillow for his son. Hermione smiled as she saw the adoration and love in Remus smile as he placed his son down for a nap.
“I will be downstairs if you need me.”
When Hermione turned to leave, Remus called her back. The look on his face was concerning to her. He looked at her with the seriousness of someone about to go to a funeral and he was the one who felt guilt.
“Hermione, before you go, I think we need to talk about this soul mate stuff…”
Hermione’s forehead crinkled, haven’t they talked about this already? What else was there to say? “What is it, Remus?”
“If this soul mate situation is not in fact a marriage binding, I will be most thankful for that. Hermione, you are very young and you have your whole life to look forward to. I don’t want you to suffer…being married to a werewolf.”
Hermione remembered this same conversation from him but with Tonks as the main subject. Replacing Tonks made his words feel like a curse going through her body. It felt worst then ten Crucio’s zapping through her body. As the pain began to numb her body, her body hummed with pent up frustrations and anger she had yet to release. Hermione crosses the distance between them in a flash and raised her wand to cast a magical field over Teddy’s crib. He would not hear them or see them, just the ceiling.
“Listen here, Remus,” Hermione snapped angrily at him, looking up at the towering man. “I never asked to be married to you; I don’t even know we are truly married. But, you are my friend and a dear friend at that. I’m just thankful that Dolohov didn’t bind me with someone horrid. But, if we are married, I will be happy. You are an honorable man, Remus. Someone I can trust and depend on to help me through this,”
Remus turned his eyes away, hurt clear in his eyes much like those triple scars down his face. Hermione was angry, albeit too angry and she was taking a lot of frustrations out on him. She didn’t regret one second of this. He opened his mouth to speak and before she knew she was doing, Hermione quieted him by putting her fingers over his lips.
“Don’t say that you can’t do this because you are a monster. I know you, Remus. You are not a monster. And if I turned out to be married to you, I don’t care what other people say about me or about us. I have had years of this kind of prejudice and nothing they say will make me feel ashamed of me or us.”
“What about the fact that I am a werewolf? I could hurt you, Hermione,” his voice was rasp with growing concern, speaking over her fingers.
Flashes of her watching him transform right before her enter through her inner eye. Back when she was fourteen, Hermione was both scared and strangely fascinated by the creature. That beast could have ripped her and her friends to shreds but now Hermione knew that wolf was just a small part of Remus. The Remus she respected, admire, and knew would not do that normally.
“I have faced Death Eaters for a whole year and nearly every year in Hogwarts, I was faced with a challenge. Your wolf, I think I can handle pretty well.”
When she knew that Remus wasn’t going to protest any further, Hermione dropped her hand. He looked at her in amazement. “You really have grown a lot since that little third year witch I met in Hogwarts. You can grown a lot stronger, brave, and more mature,” he breathed out.
“Well, if you are friends with Harry and Ron you sort of have to. And someone had to watch over them while we were out hunting.”
Hermione attempt to bring a smile to his face, telling him it was going to be fine. Yet when her deep chocolate eyes met his hazel orbs, she felt a sharp chill go down her spine. It was almost like he wanted to devour her but also keep her safe. Before Hermione could question it, she found her lips occupied with his. Hermione heart stopped as she felt the sun chapped lips over her lip balm glazed ones. It was only just a second and then he pulled away. If it wasn’t the way her lips still tingled, Hermione wasn’t sure what had happened.
“Hermione, I…”
“Hermione, I’m back!”
Harry’s voice had drowned out the werewolf’s. Hermione jumped and turn to the door where downstairs she heard Harry. When Hermione turned back to Remus, he had turned his back to her and kept himself focused on Teddy.
Hermione swallowed, raising fingers to her lips. She opened her mouth, unable to form the words that needed to be said. After two tries, Hermione resigned herself and release the spell over Teddy before she slowly made her away down the steps to Harry.
