Chap. 7: Uncovering the tale.
Upon Healer Tompkins arrival, she noted how down Harry looked, and was immediately concerned. After her notice, she quickly took the same chair beside the bed, and studied Harry momentarily.
“Harry, how are you feeling, as you do not look well”?
“Do you recon, as I’ve been up all night”! Harry scowled. “I couldn’t sleep with all the things you heaped upon me yesterday”!
“I ordered dreamless sleep for you, why did you not take it”? Tompkins asked.
“Because, I don’t like to take it, and I wanted to think everything through”. Harry replied. “However, now I think, it’s time that we talked”.
Upon Tompkins nod, Harry continued. “I remember that Dumbledore said that he got the cloak from my dad just a few days before he was murdered (1), and you say three. Sirius said, that the Fidelius Charm had been placed for a week (3), and he told me this, when I finally confronted him, after his escape.
“However, I found a letter (7), from my mum, to Sirius, and it sounded like Dumbledore had the cloak since my birthday. It talks about Sirius’ present to me and about my Dad not being able to go out without his cloak”.
“Well, without seeing the letter, it could mean several things, Harry”. The Healer explained. “One, it could mean that you had a delayed birthday party, or two, you received a late birthday present from Mr. Black, as after all, you were in hiding for a while. It could also mean that it could have been in the possession of Aberforth Dumbledore, if your mother did not name which one, or maybe, Mr. Black had it, while saying Dumbledore did, and was keeping it away from your father, just trying to keep him safe, and from sneaking out (2).
“If that’s so, then you may be right, in that Dumbledore knew Pettigrew was the secret keeper, and let them take Sirius to Azkaban (5)”. Harry coldly replied. “Barty Crouch was sending people there without any trial, and Dumbledore admitted that he gave a statement against him (10).
“Harry, my opinion is that he did know, but that is only mine, and you know what I said about opinions the other day. What you have to do is to find what you believe in, and learn to live with it.
“I can only say this, about my thoughts and opinions of Albus Dumbledore”. Tompkins replied. “He was a very manipulative man, and was just as far to one side, as You-Know-Who was to the other (9)”.
“Humph! I’m thinking across those same lines, too, and have been for a while. Especially, I have been, since Skeeter’s book came out, and I spoke to Ron’s great aunt”. Harry grunted out. “Hell, I know I was used, but to find out that I might have been left with the Dursley’s, just to what, keep me away from my Godfather, makes me want to puke.
“You know, I believed Dumbledore about the blood protection, that is, until it hit me that Voldemort now had the same blood in his veins as mine, after he was re-created, and could ‘touch me now’. That would mean that those supposed spells or wards would no longer work at the Dursley’s, as Voldemort now carried mine and Aunt Petunia’s blood. It didn’t matter, though, as I was sent there anyhow, and with the same old excuse”.
“Mr. Potter, from the memories that Draco stole, and I was shown, from you aunt, and her husband, well, you do know that you were abused while living there, do you not”? Healer Tompkins asked. “I mean, that there was physical and mental abuse directed towards you, and by all three of them, from the time you could walk and talk?”
“Oh, I know I was mentally abused, but not really physically. I was never beaten, if that’s what you mean”. Harry muttered.
“Mr. Potter…, Harry”, Tompkins sighed, “being grabbed by the hair, and slammed against the wall by an overweight uncle, starved for days at a time, while made to live in a cramped cupboard, and beat up by your cousin at every turn, which he was encouraged to do so by your uncle, means you were physically abused, and to a bad extent at that.
“The mental abuse of being labeled and called a ‘freak’, or something other that was disgusting, everyday, plus being shouted at for doing better than their son in school, and not being allowed to have friends, is mental abuse to its greatest, and it’s not right”.
“I know that already, all right”! Harry growled, and turned his head away from the healer. “Don’t think that I don’t know what they did to me, I know better than anyone”!
“Harry, this is hard for me to say, but it must be said. By being left with the Dursley’s, you were held back, both magically, and mentally, and made subservient. Anyone, who would have rescued you from that situation, would practically be a God, in your young eyes.
“The Chinese used similar methods to break people, or to change them, so they would want to follow their beliefs, and I mentioned this earlier. The main thing, though, and now that it’s all over, is to try to let it go, and heal, without taking it out on everyone around you, and yes, that means the purebloods too”.
At this, all Harry gave was a snort.
“Harry, just because that most purebloods have money, and a high rank in our society, or have refined manners, or ways, does not automatically mean they are evil dark wizards, and out to get you. The purebloods are still a majority, and you can’t keep turning everyone against you, over something they had no part in.
“Now, while I’m at it, how many Slytherins, in your year, do you think followed You-Know-Who”?
“All of them, and probably all from every year, if the truth was known”. Harry growled.
“Well, it may surprise you”, Tompkins replied, “but after it was investigated, only three boys from your year were, and that was Draco Malfoy, who it was forced upon, and Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe, who was following willingly (11).
“Blaise Zabini and even Theodore Nott stayed neutral, as did all the girls of that year. There were a few older ones, who joined the Death Eaters, but not near as many as you might think”.
“That is why I helped Draco, because he did what he had to do to save his father and mother from being tortured, and killed, right in front of him. This is a fact, and I think you know this. Even though he liked to talk the talk, when he saw what the Death Eaters actually were, he didn’t want anything else to do with it, and in a way, he had it worse than you did, during what would have been your sixth and seventh school years”.
“I had it rough too”! Harry shouted. “We had to live in a bleeding tent for months, and live on little to no food. We risked our lives while trying to find those Horcruxes!
“In Draco’s case, Harry”, Tompkins retorted, “he may have had better lodging, and food, but he was made a torturer for You-Know-Who, and made to curse muggles, and their children, along with other Death Eaters, for that things enjoyment. When he went back to school, and was hoping to get out of it, the Carrows used him on You-Know-Who’s orders. He was still being punished, by being made to do everything possible, against his will, which they could think of, over his father’s failure”.
“I know that, and saw some of it through the link I had with Voldemort, but still, I think I had it worse”. Harry replied, and had a stubborn set to his jaw.
“Harry, why do you hate Draco so much”? Tompkins asked, and truly wanted to know.
“Because of the way he acts, just like my stupid muggle family! Just like that if anyone has less than him, they’re below him”! Harry retorted.
“Really, you believe that”? Tompkins asked.
“YES”! Harry shouted.
“Harry, is it not true that Draco was the first child your age that you met in our world”? Tompkins enquired.
“Well, yes, but what’s that have to do with it”? Harry snarled.
“Harry, he described you that day, when you were both at Madam Malkin’s. He said that you were dressed in oversize clothes, full of holes, and he knew you were muggle raised, as you said something to let it slip”. When Harry started to reply, the Healer cut him off. “However, he still tried to talk to you, and still tried to befriend you that day, didn’t he? Even though he didn’t know you were Harry Potter, until that day on the train, he still tried. When he later found out that you were ‘the’ Harry Potter, and offered his hand in friendship, Ronald Weasley made fun of his name, and then, Draco, insulted him, so you took up for the one who was the poorest, who was the most downtrodden, and lowest in wizarding culture, over Draco. Why was that Harry, why not be friends with both”?
“I don’t know”. Harry muttered, and looked away again.
“I think I do, Harry, and I’ll tell you why”. Tompkins remarked. “You were broken, Harry, broken by the Dursleys, who had everything you did not, and you thought Draco was like your cousin, just because of who he was, and not wanting to give him a chance, you snubbed him.
“Several from Hogwarts have said that you said that Draco would look down upon those beneath him, over how much they were worth, or how they acted, and that you agreed with Ron Weasley every time he made a disparaging remark about other purebloods, and Slytherins in particular, when in fact, he tried to be your friend.
“You can’t have it both ways, Harry, he either looked down on you, or he wanted to be your friend, and you know the truth, and its time to let the past go, as Draco, and the other purebloods, are not the Dursleys.
“I think that Dumbledore got just what he wanted, by having the Dursleys raise you, as he got a loyal fighter, one who hated the pureblood ways, the rich and powerful, and could easily be molded, and controlled over it”.
Harry scoffed at this. “I’ve never met too many purebloods who weren’t right arses, Healer Tompkins, so I wouldn’t know.
“Did you ever think, Harry, that they were right arses over your attitude toward them, and your past actions”? Tompkins retorted, turning it back around on Harry.
When Harry wouldn’t reply to her, Healer Tompkins stood, and started walking to the door, where she finally stopped, and looked back on her patient.
“Did you think it over, what I told you that Minerva McGonagall said to Dumbledore, about your scar, and about the Dursleys yet”? Tompkins asked.
“Some”, Harry remarked, “but I don’t know for sure what he intended”.
“You do understand that that scar was not a Horcrux”? Tompkins enquired. “That since it was not made to be one, that it may have possibly been removed”? (13)
“Yea, I thought about it, but I’m still not sure”. Harry said, and turned his head to look out the large window.
“Harry, I want you to take some dreamless sleep potion this afternoon, and rest up, as this is nothing to kill yourself over, and it is all in the past, just history, and we can’t change that. All we can do, now, is to help you heal, and have a better future”. Tompkins said, and turned, leaving the room.
Harry stared at the spot where she had been for some time, before downing the phial of dreamless sleep on the nightstand, beside the bed, then lying back, and passing out.
Author’s notes:
I have done what I set out to do, and that is to bring anger from at least one reader, which is what I’m striving for, and explaining the much deeper undertone of JKR’s story, or the underpinnings that are truly hidden. It is my full intention to show the truth of things, even though some are assumptions, by using not only the 11 total books, but quoting the interviews with JKR, and her websites notes, along with the HP Lexicon. There are hints that she has given, and if you read carefully, you can find them, but they must be reasoned out, and the clues followed. The 7 books, I think, painted over a story that was much darker, and perverted, than the reader gets to see, as after all, they were children’s books.
(1) Above, Harry speaks about the time line of the cloak, and when Dumbledore received it. He tells Harry, in the DH, during his Kings Cross vision, that he borrowed the cloak only a few days before the murder of Harry’s parents; a few days, meaning less than a week.
Dumbledore: “You. You have guessed, I know, why the Cloak was in my possession on the night your parents died. James had showed it to me just a few days previously”.
(2) The letter Snape found the last page to, spoke as though one would think it was written at Harry’s birthday, but then again, if you read it, it’s just vague enough, which JKR is good at, to be written after the Fidelius charm was erected. If we take the letter at face value, then it was written shortly after Harry’s birthday, as some do think, then which Dumbledore had the cloak, or was James lied to, to keep him safe, or maybe Sirius had it, while saying Dumbledore did? Also, remember, JKR says that everyone forgets about Aberforth Dumbledore.
Lily says, “and Harry's not old enough to know it's his birthday anyway”! However, that does not mean the letter was written on his birthday, only that Harry doesn’t know he had a birthday, as he’s not old enough. It could mean that they held a late birthday, and Harry didn’t know any better.
Lily mentions the McKinnon’s murder, but how long did it take for them to get word of it, since they were in hiding? The murder was supposed to have been close to Harry’s birthday. Evidently, Pettigrew told them of it.
Personally, I think it was a letter over a delayed birthday present from Sirius, or it could have been a delayed birthday in itself.
(3) As we know, from JKR, and from the POA, The Fidelius charm was enacted around one week before, (7 to 8 days), of the Potter’s murder on October 31st, and Pettigrew ‘supposedly’ went into hiding, according to Sirius, who was there when the charm was decided upon. However, Sirius finds out that Peter was not in hiding, and was with Voldemort, and had headed to the Potters to kill them. We know Peter went with him, as he collected Voldemort’s wand, after he fell from his own curse, and JKR verifies this (12).
(4) In the letter, Lily said that Bathilda Bagshot still dropped by, which would mean she either knew the secret address, or Lily meant she had dropped by right before the charm was placed.
(5) For Dumbledore to have come by the Potter’s, a mere few days before they died, Peter Pettigrew would have had to have sent him the address on parchment, or told him personally. If it had been a week or more, I think Dumbledore, as smart as the man was, and as eloquent with words, would have said a week or more. He did not use casual talk, nor slang, to describe things like time in weeks, nor months, as a few days.
(7) Lily’s letter:
Dear Padfoot,
Thank you, thank you, for Harry's birthday present! It was his favorite by far. One year old and already' 'zooming along on a toy broomstick, he looked so pleased with himself, I'm enclosing a picture so you can see. You know it only rises about two feet off the ground, but he nearly killed the cat and he smashed a horrible vase Petunia sent me for Christmas (no complaints there). Of course, James thought it was funny, says he's going to be a great Quidditch player, but we've had to pack away all the ornaments and make sure we don't take our eyes off him when he gets going.
We had a very quiet birthday tea, just us and old Bathilda, who has always been sweet to us, and who dotes on Harry. We were so sorry you couldn't come, but the Order's got to come first, and Harry's not old enough to know it's his birthday anyway! James is getting a bit frustrated shut up here, he tries not to show it but I can tell -- also, Dumbledore's still got his Invisibility Cloak, so no chance of little excursions. If you could visit, it would cheer him up so much. Wormy was here last weekend, I thought he seemed down, but that was probably the news about the McKinnons; I cried all evening when I heard.
Bathilda drops in most days, she's a fascinating old thing with the most amazing stories about Dumbledore, I'm not sure he'd be pleased if he knew! I don't know how much to believe, actually, because it seems incredible that Dumbledore ------
The second page that Snape stole:
------could ever have been friends with Gellert Grindelwald. I think her mind's going, personally!
Lots of love,
Lily
(8) As for Harry’s behavior:
JKR: “Harry is not, and never has been, a saint. Like Snape, he is flawed and mortal”.
JKR: “Harry’s faults are primarily anger and occasional arrogance”.
(9) As for Albus Dumbledore’s true intentions:
JKR: "Although [Dumbledore] seems to be so benign for six books, he's quite a Machiavellian figure, really. He's been pulling a lot of strings. Harry has been his puppet."
From Merriam-Webster:
Definition of MACHIAVELLIAN
1: of or relating to Machiavelli or Machiavellianism
2: suggesting the principles of conduct laid down by Machiavelli; specifically : marked by cunning, duplicity, or bad faith.
(10) Quoting Dumbledore from POA:
"It is your turn to listen, and I beg you will not interrupt me, because there is very little time," he said quietly. "There is not a shred of proof to support Black's story, except your word -- and the word of two thirteen-year-old wizards will not convince anybody. A street full of eyewitnesses swore they saw Sirius murder Pettigrew. I myself gave evidence to the Ministry that Sirius had been the Potters' Secret-Keeper."
Actually, this whole statement could be taken several different ways. It could be a warning that nobody would believe them, especially since he gave evidence, but he never admits to being neither wrong, nor sorry, about it either. Just because he gave evidence didn’t mean the man didn’t lie, and JKR has called him a liar before (9).
(11) JKR gives this fact, that the three boys, Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, were the only followers of Voldemort in Slytherin, during Harry’s time, which she gave in an interview.
(12) JKR: “Wormtail, desperate to curry favor, salvaged it from the place it had fallen and carried it to him. I admit that would have been a bit of a feat for a rat, but they are highly intelligent creatures”!
(13) JKR: “Harry was not technically a Horcrux, due to Voldemort’s lack of intent”.
JKR: “Harry was technically NOT a Horcrux because there was no intent to create one. The piece of Voldemort's soul did not make Harry "evil" or "contaminated."
JKR: "The only time he ever felt it [Harry's Horcrux] stirring and moving was in Order of the Phoenix, when he himself goes through a very dark time" and the piece of soul enjoyed it and fed off of it”.
JKR: “The Sorting Hat detected the piece of Voldemort's soul within Harry”.
JKR: Official definition of a Horcrux: "the receptacle is prepared by dark magic to become the receptacle of a fragmented piece of soul and that that piece of soul deliberately detached from the Master Soul to act as a future safeguard or anchor to life and to safeguard against death."
JKR: "In essence divided," the scene in Dumbledore's office where he watches a snake divide, was when the Headmaster was figuring out about the Horcruxes”.
However, above, JKR does not say that Dumbledore already knew that Harry had a piece of Voldemorts soul attached to him, only that he figured out that Voldemort had been creating Horcruxes, and she is very good at misleading her audience. I think he already knew about the parasitic soul attachment, and he knew it wasn’t a true Horcrux, but decided to leave it, and not try to remove it, until it was finally too late. Harry, in essence, was a pawn from that night, and JKR admits it (9)”.
