Lily hummed a bit to herself as she wandered around the edge of the lake. Her father was yet again busy with grading papers and her brothers were being mean and not playing with her. The one thing she really didn’t like about living in Hogwarts with her family was that there were no kids around her age here. And Fang was with Hagrid doing something in the forest for the centaurs so she couldn’t play with him either. So, she had decided to entertain herself by playing outside even though her father had told her a dozen time not to play by the lake without him or her brothers there.
She made a face and kicked a rock with her boots. It wasn’t like she was playing in the water. It would be way too cold. It was getting closer to winter so she knew soon she might even see snow soon. It was already frosty in the mornings when she got up. Sometimes if she saw one of the ghosts after they just came in in the mornings they’d even have a bit of frost on them. The thought of seeing the Fat Friar with frost on him made the little redhead giggle some. Lily didn’t much like the cold weather but at least she got a pretty new coat for winter because of it. It was her current favorite color of purple with big gold buttons and a phoenix stitched into the side with golden thread. It was much prettier than her last blue coat that didn’t have any pretty birds stitched into it. That one had been plain and boring.
Lily bent down to pick up a rock and examine it before tossing it to the side. It wasn’t pretty enough to keep as part of her collection. She eventually came to the river that drained out of the lake and into the forest and paused. There were a lot of big rocks in it that she could use to cross but she knew her father would go ballistic if he found out she had. She bit her lip and looked around. Maybe she’d just follow the river a little ways instead. If she stayed really close to the water maybe it would be okay to keep going.
After a moments thought, she nodded to herself and started following the water into the trees. She was walking along the water for a little while, occasionally examining rocks before discarding them, before she heard something that made her stop. She slowly looked around at the trees, suddenly remembering that her father said to never go into the forest.
She shifted some from foot to foot as she listened to something moving around in the leaves. Her heart was beating fast and loud and she was afraid whatever was out there might actually hear it. Slowly, the sound of something moving started growing fainter and fainter. Eventually, it was gone altogether. Lily let out a long sigh of relief and put a hand to her chest. She should definitely head back to the castle now. Her father would throw a fit if he knew she was in the forest after he told her not to go there. Lily made a face as she turned back the way she came. It wasn’t like she meant to disobey him. She’d just forgot about it.
Lily had taken all of five steps when something caught her eye and she turned to look. There was a pair of eyes looking at her from inside of a bush. She smiled some at the furry little face and bent down to get a closer look. “Hi there,” she said with a grin. It looked like a little fox. Or maybe a weasel or something. But it was cute and furry and all black. The furry animal just stared back with huge sparkling eyes.
Lily giggled some and reached out towards the bush. A sudden sparkle of light shining off Lily’s brand new coat buttons made the creature’s eyes go huge and suddenly the furry thing launched forward. Lily let out a squeal of surprise and fright as she recoiled. The furry creature slammed into her chest and they both went toppling over. Instinct made Lily’s arms clamp down around the little creature against her chest as she fell into the river.
The redhead gasped at how icy cold the water was before she realized her head was underwater. She kicked and thrashed to get to the surface and when she managed it sputtered and gasped to try and breathe again. She barely had time to take in any air as the current dragged her under again. The water was moving frighteningly fast and despite how hard and desperately she was kicking and trying to get to the surface she could only manage it for a second or two before she was dragged under again. She sometimes hit the bottom and tried to kick off but the river was either deeper than she thought or she was completely turned around because she couldn’t reach it.
Lily panicked even worse as she failed to reach the surface again and again. She just kept getting dragged down. Suddenly, she felt a tug and was wrenched out of the water by the back of her coat. She gasped and sputtered for air before coughing up icy cold water. As soon as she could breathe again she started crying even as she felt solid ground under her again. The little furry thing against her chest -that she’d somehow managed to hold onto the whole harrowing trip- trembled in her arms and whined, which only made Lily cry harder.
A warm, dry, and somewhat ratty coat was carefully put over her shoulders. It was too big and didn’t do much to actually warm her up but it helped comfort her. She curled up on the ground and shivered as she cried for her father. He always made her feel safe and all over better no matter what. Suddenly, there were hooves thundering closer and Lily heard a bad word spat out. She blinked some and tried to stop her tears as she looked up. She was still looking around in confusion with teary eyes when several centaurs appeared a few moments later. “Lily! Wha’re ya doin’ out here? Wha’ happened? Yer all wet!” Hagrid’s deep voice asked as he ran into sight a moment or two later, clearly somewhat out of breath from running.
Lily sniffed and rubbed at her face with one hand. “I fell in!” she cried as Hagrid hurried over and picked her up off the ground.
“Shh. It’s alrigh’ now. Come on, le’s get ya back ta the castle. ‘Arry’s probably worried sick,” he said as he held her to his big warm chest. She sniffed again and tried to slow her tears as she curled up in his much bigger arms. “I’ll come back afta I get ‘er ta the castle, Bran,” he told one of the centaurs before he started walking off. The lead centaur, a light brown colored male, nodded in understanding as the half-giant left with the still crying girl.
The small creature in Lily’s arm started moving around and poked his head up enough to see out over Lily’s shoulder. “W’ere’d ya get tha’ niffler from, Lily?” Hagrid asked, noticing the tapered face that was peering around curiously.
Lily sniffed. “It was under a bush and when I went to pet it it jumped at me. I fell in the water…” she explained, reaching up to pet the creature’s wet furry head.
“Ah, musta been after yer buttons,” he said as he kept making his way back towards the castle. “Wha’ abou’ tha’ coat yer wearin’?”
Lily shrugged. “The man who pulled me out of the water gave it to me,” she murmured as she snuggled deeper into said coat. It wasn’t terribly warm but it was dry and that made it better than hers.
Hagrid frowned at that. “Wha’ man?”
Lily shrugged again. “I didn’t see him…”
Hagrid’s frown grew but he didn’t say anything else. It only took a little while to get to the castle with Hagrid’s long strides but when he got there Harry was already outside looking around anxiously. “I got ‘er ‘Arry!” Hagrid called upon seeing his friend looking around.
Harry whipped around and hurried over. “Thank Merlin! What happened?” he asked, eyes going wide at the sight of his daughter soaking wet with a strange tattered coat over her and a niffler peaking out over her shoulder. He instantly held his arms out to take his daughter from his friend.
“Found a niffler an’ it jumped at ‘er. Scared ‘er an’ she fell inta the river,” Hagrid said as he obediently handed the shivering girl over to Harry. “Said a man fished ‘er out bu’ I didn’ see one.”
Lily nodded and wrapped her arm’s around Harry’s neck. “He said a bad word when the centaurs came and I think he ran away,” she added as Harry rubbed her back comfortingly.
Harry frowned just like Hagrid had before nodding to his half-giant friend. “Thanks, Hagrid. I can handle it from here,” he said. Hagrid nodded back and said his goodbyes before heading back towards the forest. Harry watched him for a moment before turning and heading inside the castle to his rooms.
As soon as he got Lily inside, he put the niffler she had brought with her in a cage he transfigured and sent his daughter to take a hot bath. As she was doing that, he asked the house elves for some hot cocoa to be sent up. Only then did he let himself examine the coat closer. He frowned at the once nice black coat in front of him. It was wool but had been worn so thin it was practically useless as a coat. Several buttons were missing and there were tears along the seams. It looked like it had been worn to death and back. There were nothing in the pockets except a few scraps of lint. Harry turned the coat inside out and found the tag. His eyes widened at the familiar Malfoy family crest embroidered in fraying stitches. Underneath the crest was stitched ‘Property of Draco Malfoy’.
