Anita looked at the man across from her desk and knew that he was trouble. She had seen so many of these clients in her work and learned that she couldn’t simply refuse some of the people with money to burn and a task to accomplish. Franklin Turner looked innocuous enough, but he was vague on the details of why he wanted great-great-grandfather raised from his grave.
“How did he die, Mr. Turner,” Anita asked the question again.
“He was a great man by all accounts, but his journals were rather vague and disorganized at the end. I would like some clarification. I would pay you three times your usual fee.”
“Mr. Turner, the method of death has a very important impact on the raising. If you cannot provide any proof that he did not die by foul means, I cannot help you.” Anita watched as Turner’s face crumpled into a scowl Severus Snape.
“Every other animator in the country has no problem with raising the dead as long as the price is right. What is your problem?” Turner stood and looked hard at Anita waiting for an answer.
Anita reached into her desk drawer and pulled out her backup gun, her firestar. She set it on the top of the desk, “Get out, Mr. Turner. And a bit of advice, if you try anything to force me to do the raising, I will kill you.”
Turner’s eyes widened as he stared at Anita’s gun sitting on the desk and the cold look in her eyes. “You, Mr. Turner, are at the very bottom of a list of people I have said no to. I have been threatened and the people I love because I won’t raise someone from their grave for some vague sketchy reason. I killed each one of them and did worst to one of them. Do not even think of coming near this office again or anyone I care for. Get out.” Anita looked blankly at the man with her hand sitting on her gun. Turner scrambled to the door trying to see where he was going and keep an eye on Anita. He ran from the office with a hollered ‘she’s crazy’ thrown at a concerned Burt, Anita’s business partner.
Burt came to the door with a fierce frown and started to say something then saw Anita’s gun still sitting on the desk and turned to walk away shaking his head. Burt’s reasoning for his docility was that Anita brought in too much revenue to scold her effectively and it would cost too much to buy her out of the animator firm. He did not notice the pale blonde man that pasted closely to him and entered in to Anita’s office.
Anita looked up at the man, vampire, framed in her door. He was tall, but not overly so, but statuesque. His long platinum hair immediately reminded her of the only other person she had met with that matching shade. She was immediately on the defensive and raised her gun in the blink of an eye. The vampire in the door raised his hands in surrender just as fast as Anita’s gun was aimed at his heart.
“I come in peace. I wish to apply for asylum with Jean-Claude Master of City of St. Louis.” Anita let her power of the dead flow outward and touch the dead man standing in front of her. He tasted of truth like a cool minty freshness to her power. She lowered her gun and placed it back in her desk drawer and motioned for the man to have a seat. She stayed tensed for action while she waited to hear what the man had to say.
“My name is Lucius Malfoy. I wish to join your master’s kiss.” His mouth sneered around the word for a group of vampires, like pack, for wolves. She was slightly impressed by the lack of fang flashed in the expression. Young vamps rarely knew how to police their movements to not flash fang like a cop flashes a badge. Anita could usually feel the age of a vampire, but Lucius Malfoy had an ageless feel to him like his power had come to him all at once.
“I have a warrant of execution for you, Mr. Malfoy. You cannot ask for asylum under vampire laws when you are a fugitive by United States law. I have the right to kill you where you sit.” Anita looked at the man across from her with hard eyes.
“I am aware of your laws, but I am also aware of legal precedence for stays of execution for vampires controlled by other vampires. You, yourself, signed affidavits to that situation. I was being controlled by the mother of your race.” Another sneer crossed Lucius’ face, but this time a fraction of gleaming white fang peeked out at Anita.
“Do you really expect me to believe that you were being ridden by Marmee Noir and can just stroll in here all free and clear?” Anita looked at the man through narrowed eyes, but she let her power feel out the truth of his words. “She does not let her little children stray. I have felt and tasted that power.”
Lucius sat forward and gazed longingly at Anita for long moments that seemed like he did not hear what she said. He shook his head strongly and spoke, “If you wish to have a civilized conversation with me I would suggest you rein your power; it is intoxicating.” He lifted his chin as if sniffing the air for a scent like a lycanthrope would. Anita balled the fist back around her power over the dead and sat back in her chair to put the extra inches between them. She knew her power was overly alluring to vamps.
“Thank you,” Lucius spoke in his smooth British accent. “Ms. Blake, you are probably well aware that I am of magical descent. I was a wizard before I became this.” He gestured to his whole body as if he were indicating a specimen.
“I escaped that thing by the same means it is rumored her rogue children have, magic. I am a wizard first and foremost. I simply warded my body against intrusion, but I was still subject to the vampire council. She controls them like dogs. I had enough of that from the Dark Lord. Again, I wish for asylum. Your territory is the only safe bastion from her.” Lucius let a little of his hard mask fall for Anita to glimpse some real fear in his bearing, before he reasserted his control over his body.
Anita was confused and that was a state that made Anita very defensive, so she got angry as usual. “Mr. Malfoy, I don’t like letting known killer criminals come to town and just get to bunk down with us.”
“Ms. Blake that is not entirely true. I believe the local Rex of the lion pride is a known enforcer for the mob out of Chicago. Am I wrong?” Lucius smirked and Anita found herself blushing before she scowled and retorted hotly.
“Haven is under strict orders to keep any criminal activity out of St. Louis. He also adds power to our group, stability. You don’t offer anything.” Anita said and raised an eyebrow at Lucius with her own smirk.
“Are we getting into negotiations now, or are we just baiting the hooks? I need to know Ms. Blake whether you speak for Jean-Claude or for only you? I have things to offer you and Harry Potter. I will not be relegated to kowtowing servant again.” Animosity radiated from Lucius’ presence like a furnace. Anita felt it like a flame and she felt tingles of the arduer start to rise at the feeling.
“You were held by Belle weren’t you?”
Lucius tensed at the question and went as still as Jean-Claude did when he was trying hard to shield like a son of a bitch. She nodded in quiet understanding of what Lucius probably went through until Belle and he could break free from Marmee Noir’s hold. Anita understood perfectly.
A cool calm eased into her mind and Jean-Claude was there, helping soothe Anita back to calm and control. She simply let him take all the pertinent information about the situation she was in knew what he wanted her to do. Anita had been so afraid of the true melding of master and servant, but it worked with an ease that Anita might have found far more disturbing only a year ago.
“Jean-Claude will meet with you tonight and he will be inviting Severus and Harry as well. He warns you that any misinformation or treachery will be met with the full extent of vampire, wizard and human law available. That means I will kill you.” Anita let the emptiness that had earned her the nickname of The Executioner and saw Lucius very visible flinch, so much for all that vampire control.
“I tell the truth about my intentions Ms. Blake. I have no objection to Mr. Potter and Severus being there.” Lucius nodded and sat back to wait for further instructions.
Harry was currently testing the limits of his husband’s stomach. Severus was grateful that he did not consume solid food anymore and did not have any bile to dry heave with. He watched as Harry spooned another fork full of sauerkraut, corned beef, and chocolate in his mouth. It smelled awful to his highly tuned and enhanced senses; he was a potion master for Merlin’s sake! He was relieved when the phone rang and he had an excuse to leave the table and not offend his highly sensitive pregnant husband.
“This is Severus Snape, how may I help you?” Severus went very still when as he listened to the other end. His silence made Harry look over to the partially concealed alcove where the phone in the dining room was located with his husband. He put down his fork and waddled over to Severus’ side. He put a hand on the man’s raised arm and did not like that Severus would not look directly at him. His magic flared and Severus turned swiftly to him to exclaim.
“Control yourself brat! This is important than hurt feelings.” He turned his attention back to the phone receiver and spoke one short phrase. “We will be there.”
Severus hung up the phone and turned to Harry, “Lucius Malfoy asked for asylum from Jean-Claude. He has opened negotiations and has an offer to us as well. They are meeting at the Circus later this evening to commence bargaining. I do not want you to go.” Severus fell back on a physical habit from his teen years by running a hand through his shoulder length hair. He looked pleadingly at Harry and frowned at the stubborn set of the young man’s jaw. He wanted to call him a boy, but he had never been a true boy and definitely wasn’t one now. He placed a hand over the extended belly containing his twin sons, “Please”.
“Sev, I don’t care how powerful you think Lucius is but I warded the Circus so hard that Lucius will be lucky if he can walk past the property line if he has any ill intent. I studied Ravenclaw’s intention ward thoroughly and even improved on them. Two Gryffindors were expelled from the grounds for thinking about pushing a deatheater child down a staircase. I will go, but you will have to drive, because I don’t think I will fit behind the wheel with my seat where it needs to be for me to reach the pedals.” He turned and called Mitzy to bring him some robes to where.
“Lucius will remember tonight if he can enter the Circus at all that I am the wizard that destroyed his Dark Lord tonight.” He put the robe on and scowled at the snort from his husband as the robe would not pass his belly. “Maybe not robes after all, besides he is a Slytherin. He will be expecting an attempt to intimidate; let’s go the opposite.”
Harry summoned a large t-shirt that said ‘You should see the other guy!’ and maternity pants, having Severus put his dragon hide boots on his swollen feet. He kissed Severus as the man tried to stand back up straight. Severus wrapped preternaturally strong arms around the young man he loved and use the utmost care to not hurt him in his desperate worry.
Lucius felt the physical force of magic testing him as he passed on to the property where his fate and his companion would be determined. The person with him was covered from head to feet in a heavy robe. Their face hidden and head down cast. He had a proprietary arm at the small of their back, the top of his companion’s head only reaching his shoulders. They were being escorted by two vampires that carried swords and guns. They looked so similar that Lucius speculated on whether they were twin, not just brothers. They watched him carefully as they crossed the magic that tasted of Harry Potter’s magic. His companion gasped almost silently, but they were vampires and it was heard. Their escort paused as they turned more focused attention on the cloaked vampire.
Lucius felt relatively secure as they descended the stair down into the catacomb underground that served as the bastion of the St. Louis kiss. The double heavy doors were reminiscent of his old manor and felt a slight pang at the fact he would probably never return. Curtains were held open by two black shirted security guards that had a smell that reminded Lucius of Pettigrew, but he ignored his urge to cringe at remembering the mousy man.
His first sight of the room full of people gave him an idea of how he was going to handle the meeting. He saw Jean-Claude sitting relaxed and sprawled enticingly on a sofa wearing skin tight leather pants that laced up the sides leaving snippets of pale flesh visible. His companion gasped again at the sight of the Master of City and Lucius flexed his hand on the vampire’s back.
He saw Anita standing next to where Jean-Claude lounged and Richard, the Ulfric of the local pack, standing on the other side. They made a very enticing and powerful picture for any one faint of heart, but Lucius was a Malfoy. There were other vampires lining the room, but Lucius dismissed them as non-entities to the negotiations. He looked for the other people that needed to be here tonight and did not see them.
“Jean-Claude, Master of City of St. Louis Missouri, I am Lucius Abraxas Malfoy and I am here to negotiate for asylum for me and my companion.” Lucius made sure to make eye contact with Jean-Claude telling the man he was willing to test powers and play the games that vampires loved to play.
“You are too young to know the games of vampire court so well Lucius Malfoy,” Jean-Clauade’s smooth French accent washed over the blonde former wizard, but Lucius stood strong against the power laced in the voice. He said the Malfoy name like it was meant to be pronounced from its original French origins. Lucius took a breath that he did not need, but was habit still left from his human years.
“Vampire politics are old hat for me. Vampires are eerily on a comparable societal level as wizards of old blood. I am familiar with it and do not find it taxing to conform to this existence.” Lucius stopped himself from needless explanation and stopped talking and waited.
“You contributed to much strife within my territory and relations with the human, Monsieur Malfoy. Why would I grant your request?” Jean-Claude sat up straighter and let some of the power out of his voice to gauge Lucius’ sincerity.
“I was not in control of myself and my former colleagues. We were enslaved and I was the only one to escape ‘her’ control with the help of your maker. Belle sent me here with assurances that if I offered enough you would provide protection. I have brought many gifts for you and your allies.” Lucius took his hand away from his companion and took a step ahead. He reached into the sleeve of his robes and a voice stopped him where his hand was just touching his wand.
“If you even think of pulling your wand I will end you Lucius.”
“Ahh, there you are Severus. I was hoping you would come so I could prove my sincerity. You are a master of the mind arts after all.” Lucius turned towards the deeply dangerous voice of his former friend. “I wished to resize my gifts the Master of City.”
“Put them on the table and I will resize them. And then, you will open your mind fully for me.” Severus gestured to the table with his wand and watched Lucius carefully place several match box size books and small wooden box. “Have a seat.” Severus conjured a small wooden chair and Lucius knew was meant to be uncomfortable. The blonde vampire sat and waited for the pain.
What he got was a slight pressure as Severus entered his mind and then started sifting through his memories of the last few years. When the man finally drew out of Lucius’ head the man was panting with the raised emotion. He looked far more human than he ever did in life. Severus turned away from Lucius to look at his companion. Lucius gathered his wits to speak rapidly.
“I can explain,” but Lucius was not fast enough to stop Severus from whipping the cloak down off the female with him. A startled gasp sounded from near the couch out of thin air. Suddenly Harry Potter appeared from where he was previously invisible. He moved towards the female vampire.
“This isn’t possible! I saw you with the stone.” Harry said as he reached out to a vampire that looked exactly like Lily Evans Potter, Harry’s mum. He turned towards Severus, “Sev?”
Severus was almost as frozen in confusion as Harry. He had gotten everything from Lucius’ mind. Lucius found Lily as the play thing of a vampire council member. Belle negotiated for her when Lucius informed her of her origins. Lily had survived by hiding her magic, but being strong enough not to be a victim to anyone but the very powerful. When Lucius was sent to Jean-Claude she sent Lily as well to help get them away from The Mother’s influence.
“This is your mother Harry,” Severus said and caught Harry as his feet went from up under him.
Harry looked from Severus to Lily and back again. “But the stone, Severus, I saw her!” Harry had a note of hysteria in his voice. Lily answered him though.
“I was there, Harry, love. I am dead and the stone brought me to you. I was being punished and trapped in a coffin when the final battle happened. I wanted to show myself, but how could I? I was a dark creature and I didn’t dare tell Dumbledore after everything that happened. The stone summoned me from the coffin and I thought I was seeing my son go to his death.”
“But how?” Harry asked as Severus steadying him on his feet. Harry unconsciously held his unborn twins for comfort.
“Dumbledore sent me to the vampires to negotiate their neutrality. I had to feed them I had been bitten many times. When He came the killing curse was enough. It took me three days to reconnect with my magic to apparate out of the grave. By then Sirius had been arrested, the Ministry was in chaos, you were squirrelled away somewhere, and Dumbledore had started a dark creature suppression campaign. I ran to the vampires, but that just put me under the power of a master. When Lucius found me I had hidden everything I had been for so long that it weeks for me to believe anything Lucius had to say. I thought you had died. Now I am here.” Lily reached for Harry, but could not bring herself to step towards her son. She knew he would reject her. She was a monster.
Harry pushed away from Severus and grabbed his mother around the waist. He was the same height as she was. He grabbed her hand placed it against his distended belly. “These are your grandchildren. Severus and I are going to be parents soon.” Harry babbled telling his mum all she needed to know about his current life.
Lily looked up over to Severus and smiled. It was haunted, but it contained some of the old Lily that Severus remembered from their childhood.
“You will love Teddy. He reminds me so much of Remus, but you knew him far better than I did, so you might know better.” Harry beamed at the woman who birthed him. She was here and Lucius Malfoy had gave her back to him. Harry sobered and turned to Lucius who was composed again and standing watching the reunion. Harry looked at Severus.
“He tells the truth. He was not at fault for what happened here. He is sincere.” Severus turned to Jean-Claude, “Belle Morte sent him to you.”
Jean-Claude stood, “Present your gifts Lucius Malfoy.”
Lucius walked towards Jean-Claude and presented his neck for the master. Jean-Claude kissed the pulse of Lucius’ neck bringing up a hand to sink into the platinum locks. “What have you brought my servant and Mon Loup?” Jean-Claude let go of Lucius and sat back in his seat.
Lucius took a breath he did not need before turning back to the table. “This have been in my family for some years, but the power to use them has long died in my line. These book were written by some of the most powerful necromancers in history. I present them to your Anita Blake.” He pushed the books towards the woman and saw her curiosity blatant of her face.
Then, Lucius, turned to the Ulfric and opened the waist high box. These are charmed trinkets that are unisex in nature that will help your young wolves control their emotions until they are in total control. I am aware that the government houses do not like to let go of new lycanthropes. With these gifts and my sincerity I request sanctuary from you Master of St. Louis.”
Jean-Claude saw that the gifts for Anita and Richard were well received, he could feel it, but he was confused about the absence of a personal gift from the vampire.
“You have given everyone a gift but me.” Jean-Claude let some of the power he possessed enter his voice and Lucius fell to his knees and crawled forward to Jean-Claude. He reached Jean-Claude’s feet and moved his hair away from his pale neck.
“I gift you the control of my magic,” Lucius whispered barely able to raise his voice against Jean-Claude’s power.
“Lucius! You cannot be serious,” Severus spoke and started to approach his old friend.
Lucius turned away from Jean-Claude and faced Severus with head low. “You do not know what it is like to be fully dead. You bask in the boy’s warmth and life, while I set adrift. I thought anything would be better than Azkaban, but my magic is so cold now. Then, I was the plaything of something that cared nothing for me or what I could offer. Belle promised me that he could offer me warmth. She could not be wrong if you have allied yourselves with him. This is my choice.” Lucius turned back to Jean-Claude’s feet and reached out to touch the supple leather of the thigh high boots.
Jean-Claude reached down and sunk his fingers in Lucius’ locks once more and lifted his head to look into his eyes. “You will be bound to me for as long as I live. You will be at my command, totally.”
“Yes!” Lucius sank into the warm nature of Jean-Claude’s power and became one of the vampire’s in Jean-Claude’s kiss. Lucius drank until Jean-Claude told him to stop.
“Asher, take care of our Lucius.” Jean-Claude looked over to the red headed vampire that had hair similar to Anita’s Damien. He caught Severus’ eye and nodded to the female vamp.
“Lily, Jean-Claude must blood oath you as well.” He gestured to the Master of City.
Lily turned the bright green eyes that she had gifted her son on Severus. She had a hard time turning away from her son. She continued to hold his hand as she asked Severus a question. “Is he truly fair? I won’t ask about kind, I know our natures, but will it be like the rest?” Lily looked at her old friend.
“We are friends and if Jean-Claude is not above board Anita Blake will be there to rectify the situation, if not Harry.” Severus spoke with a slight smile in his voice. He escorted Lily over to Jean-Claude and helped her to kneel, even if she didn’t need it. Severus was touching his friend again.
Jean-Claude lifted his wrist to Lily’s mouth and the woman bite into his flesh and drank. She moaned over the power exchange and let go before Jean-Claude said. She lifted sparkling green eyes to her new master, and then turned to smile at Harry. She expected to see some form of revulsion on her son’s face, but all she saw is love and pining ache for his lost parent. She smiled showing bloodied fangs and he frowned, for just a moment Lily wanted to cry, but Harry only reached into his pocket, pulling out a handkerchief to remove the blood from her mouth. He smiled as he finished and looked to Jean-Claude.
“Will it be alright if we take her home or is there some vamp orientation for her?” Harry smiled.
Jean-Claude could do nothing but laugh and it filled the room with power and tingling sensation. “Non, she is free to make her own living arrangements. If she is in need of work we will see if we can find her a place. I can see you wish to get reacquainted.” He leant down to Harry and kissed him on the cheek as an impulse and laughed at the giggle Harry gave him and the scowl from Severus. “Your husband is too cute, Severus.”
“Yes, I know. Jean-Claude we will take our leave. We shall be sending an invitation for a small gathering soon. Harry wishes to have a baby shower.” Severus nodded and shook his head at Harry and Lily as they drifted off in their own world of long lost family. They apparated back home leaving Lucius to acclimate to his new surroundings and to let Draco know where his father would be residing.
