Chapter Seven
Draco wandered up to the front of the train, glancing in compartments as he went. The Weaselette and Gary seemed to have done their job well, most of the younger years were ready to go and Draco only needed to remind a couple that they would be arriving in a few minutes. He arrived at the front of the train before it had even begun to slow down so he knew he would have a few minutes to wait. He took a seat off to the side of the store room door and rested his head against the wall.
He quickly ran through the rest of his day: get all of the students off the train and up to the castle, sorting ceremony and dinner, meet with the Headmaster for his room assignment and schedule of duties, a quick meeting with Granger, get settled in, and time permitting go down and check on the Slytherin dorms. He had just finished his list when he felt the train being to slow down and he relished in the last few moments of peace before the train rolled to a stop at the station.
‘3,2,1, ding’, he thought, his ding coinciding perfectly with the soft chiming that signaled the students could leave. Within seconds the corridor was filled with younger students pushing and shoving, each trying to escape the suddenly cramped space. He sighed audibly and slowly stood up. Why he gave Granger the easy assignment was beyond him. Yeah, she had a larger area to check but it was filled with older students. They knew from experience that it was better to allow the compartments closer to the doors to empty out first, only then would the rest attempt to get off. It made for a much easier progression.
Finally Draco pointed his wand to his throat and muttered a projection spell. He cleared his throat loudly and it resonated down the aisle.
“Listen up, everyone in the middle of the cars, go back into your compartments until those closest to the doors are out, then file out compartment by compartment. Compartments 1-4 come to the front, compartments 5-8 head to the back”, Draco instructed.
The students all froze for a moment before scurrying to obey the older boy. Once the aisle was as clear as it was going to be Draco patrolled up and down the aisle, helping some students with their baggage, answering some of the simpler questions himself or pointing them in the direction of the prefects on the platform for further directions.
Once he was sure all the students had gone he made one last pass down the train, checking each compartment and gathering up the left behind belongings. He shook his head at the collection he had acquired by the time he made it back to the Head compartment.
He saw the Head Girl waiting for him by their compartment, leaning against the door, a book in her hand and a small box by her feet. She looked up as he approached.
“Any problems”, she asked as he drew closer.
“Just the usual traffic jam that normally occurs with the little firsties, and somehow I think they managed to leave half of their belongings behind. You?”
“It was pretty easy, one fight between a couple of 3rd years but that was it, a few forgotten books but not nearly as many as you found. Here put them in there.” She nodded to the box at her feet.
“What’s that?” he asked.
“A lost and found box, I made them after I got my letter. There is a main box in the Deputy Headmistress’s office; once you place something in this box it’ll be transported to the main box in her office. I figured we could put a few of the drop off boxes around the school”, she explained.
Intrigued he started to put the items he found in the box watching in mild curiosity as they disappeared.
“Well that’s easier then lugging everything up there by hand” he said as they started to depart the train.
“I’m trying to find a way to have the boxes recognize different magical signatures, then we could have the items routed directly to boxes in the owner’s common rooms”, Hermione explained.
Draco merely nodded his head and climbed in the last carriage that was left waiting for them. Hermione climbed into the carriage after him and settled in the seat diagonal from him. The carriage started to slowly pull them up to the castle but neither of them spoke a word. Finally Draco had had enough; the tension was so thick in the carriage that you could practically see it.
“Listen Granger, we have to work together, not to mention live together, all year”, Draco began. “The past couple of years have been pretty rough on everyone and quite frankly I’m sick of fighting, I’m sure you are too.” He waited until she nodded before continuing. “Well I’d like to make this year as drama-free as possible. So here’s what I’m proposing, we’ll both come up with a list of things we absolutely don’t want and a list of things we absolutely need and then tomorrow night we’ll get together and sort through it all and come up with a list of ground rules. I’ll follow them if you will and hopefully we can make it to the end of the year without hexing each other beyond recognition.”
Hermione was taken aback; sure when Ron went all apocalyptic about Malfoy begin Head Boy she had said she thought he would try to keep the peace but that was mostly just to calm Ron down. She figured he would do whatever he wanted; ignoring her completely until he had to deal with some Head duty but here he was trying to…do what exactly she wasn’t sure but it seemed like he was trying to establish peace.
“What do you mean by things we absolutely need and things we absolutely don’t want”, she asked warily.
“Just things we can and can’t live without. How often and how late we can have visitors in the common room, noise levels, bathroom schedule. For instance, I know I will absolutely be requiring the bathroom for at least a half hour after all my Quidditch practices. Possibly longer.” He watched her waiting for a response.
“Well what if one of the things you absolutely need is in direct contrast to something I absolutely don’t want” she retorted guardedly.
“It’s called compromise”, he snorted as he closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the soft cushion. He peaked one eye open to look at her, “I have lived with people before and somehow made it work with them, I was under the impression that you would be less difficult then a bunch of Slytherin boys.”
When she didn’t make any move to respond he closed his eye again, “Just make sure you have your list by tomorrow night, ok?”
Hermione chewed on the inside of her cheek, trying to see all of the angles before committing to something that could be a trick.
“Ok”, she finally agreed. “Oh, before I forget. I checked the Head compartment before you got there and found this”, she said holding out the book he had seen in her hand earlier. “I figured it was probably either yours or Blaise’s.”
“It’s Blaise’s”, he said reaching for the book. “He was a little scattered today. I’ll make sure it gets back to him.”
The carriage lurched to a stop by the Black Lake. They were charged with helping Hagrid bring the first years from the boat to the Great Hall this year. There were so many more of them this year that they needed double the amount of boats then they did in previous years. This was another reason why taking the front of the train, and in turn taking responsibility for the first years, had been nice of Draco.
The two Head students dismounted from the carriage and walked over to the pier to wait for the first years. They could see the boats in the distance, slowly being pulled by and invisible force towards the castle.
“They’re going to have to get more carriages next year”, Hermione mused to herself while counting the boats.
“Or make repeat trips back”, Draco replied quietly before settling himself down on the wooden pier to wait. He stretched his long legs out along the planks and rested back on his bent elbows, his face upturned in the moonlight. He felt oddly at peace, calmer then he had in a long while. The awakening of his Veela half had not been an easy transition. He knew it was going to happen of course but no amount of research could have prepared him for what it was like.
‘If it wasn’t for that stupid snake-faced freak I would have been better prepared’, he thought with a sneer. Since the generation gap between when the Veela gene would manifest itself was so great all of the former Malfoy Veelas had closely documented the process in order to leave behind some guidance to the next generation. All of that had been lost however when Voldermort had come into power the first time. It had no longer been safe to leave those sorts of documents around with a tyrant running around all power-crazed. Hundreds of years of records and family history had been lost, Draco’s grandfather Abraxas had taken it away, presumably to burn it.
Draco could feel his Veela half churning within him, angry at the destruction of the history of its familial line. He quickly pushed it down; it wouldn’t do him any favors if he allowed his Veela to come out right now. Veelas were very sexual creatures. While it was true that once they found their mates they were fiercely committed to them, until that happened they had no problem satiating the constant need they felt with any attractive female they encountered. Unfortunately there was only one of those around at the moment and he didn’t think a quick shag on the pier would be something she would appreciate.
At that he smirked to himself, ‘well, she would appreciate it at the time’, he admitted cockily. Draco had always been a very talented lover but after coming into his inheritance he had been granted all the sexual prowess of a full Veela. While his father was focused on the power that came with being a Veela and his mother cared only about how many grandchildren she could get out of it, he was much more occupied with his enhanced…skills. His mind started to drift to the few women he had time to...experiment with since his change. He smirked remembering their soft cries turning to moans and finally screams as he proceeded to ruin them for any man who came after him. After all, no mere man could compete with him in his new and improved state.
His Veela half, craving the release that his human half was reliving, began to creep to the surface again. Draco normally kept that part of him firmly in check but his Veela was a sly creature and could tell he was momentarily distracted. His Veela felt a buzz of awareness and could sense a powerful presence nearby, a powerful female presence. The Veela couldn’t turn toward where he felt the power radiating from, not without taking complete control over the boy and if that happened, well neither would be in control for very long. The Veela was driven but not stupid. It knew that they didn’t have the time it would take to satisfy them both before the younger students got there.
But he did so want to see the girl who could admit such power, if only he could get control of just one eye, get Draco to open it up just a smidge he might be able to see her. He slowly pushed further up, taking advantage of Draco’s attention being diverted for the moment. ‘Just… a… bit…. more’, he thought.
A loud gasp was heard from beside him, pulling Draco’s awareness back to the current setting. He immediately noticed how close to the surface his Veela was and slammed it back down while jumping up, his eyes wide. He looked over at the source of the sound.
Hermione was leaning up against the railing of the pier, her hands grasping the wood tightly. Her chest was heaving and her face a pleasant shade of pink, her eyes were glazed as she stared through his chest. It seemed to take her a few moments to realize he was watching her. Her eyes cleared and flew up to his face then down to the ground, her face changing from pink to red.
“Sorry, I thought I … saw a spider”, she stammered while turning away from him. “Oh, look the boats are about to dock”. And with that she darted off without as much as a glance back.
