Draco held Hermione tightly as they listened to Melody explain the difference in magical and muggle vampires. They hadn’t heard this part before because they hadn’t met Demitri at that point in time. There were many nuances that even they hadn’t noticed, like Demitri’s ability to use magical items without problem. Most muggles couldn’t work port keys or use floo powder. She also explained that when being turned, a wizard could either lose their powers or have them enhanced but muggles would always gain the ability to use charmed objects.
All the seventh years were riveted. No other teacher at Salem had dared use examples of the dark creatures they were learning about. Even Care of Magical Creatures was taught strictly using textbooks. They were lucky they never had to encounter one of Hagrid’s Blast-Ended Skewerts but it was a shame they would never get to see a unicorn or a hippogriff. It almost made Draco want to bribe Harry into bringing Buckbeak’s grandson Pepperfeet.
“Now we come to the best part, mesmerizing victims!” Melody cried out and clapped her hands. She twitched when she heard everyone snicker behind her. It was difficult to hear her say that without thinking about Ron. The poor sod had asked about that particular gift and ended up in a demonstration that almost caused him his life. Melody would never have allowed it but it had turned Ron off vampires for a very long time. He’d grown comfortable with them over the years but he was still wary.
“Who would like to volunteer?” Melody looked around and grinned as she picked Parkers, the overeager ginger in the back.
Alex barked a laugh when the boy sauntered down the aisle. “Ah, memories.”
Parkers cocked his head. “What do you mean?”
“The last time that I did this demonstration, it was with a boy that favored you. He got quite the lesson.”
“Well, I think I can resist the vampire lure,” Parkers said cockily.
“Is that so?” Alex purred. His eyes started glowing. “You know I have kind of a thing for red heads. Look into my eyes.” The class let out sighs at the magnetism that Alex exuded.
“Alright,” Melody broke in. “Please raise your hands if you’d like nothing more than to do whatever Alex wants.”
There were only four in the class that didn’t raise their hands, which is exactly what she had expected. These were the children meant to be the matches for the phenoms. The fourth piece of the puzzle had walked in with the second class. This one made her eyes hurt she’d rolled them so hard. A vampire hunter was to be Rhapsody’s match. Demitri was less than impressed but Melody had insisted he stand down.
Most hunters had it in their blood, faster reflexes and a sixth sense that allowed them to pick a vampire out of the crowd. It was said to have come from imbibing a potion long ago but the vampires knew the truth. They were the offspring of daywalkers, which was one of the reasons why they’d forbidden them to be created. The daywalkers had turned on the vampires, irate at being forced to try and join a coven or procure food for their sires. They’d met regular mortals and had children. These children supposedly did not show any signs of vampirism and were deemed completely human.
Melody knew different. Her own boys had almost as much talent as Severus, minus the need to drink blood to heal faster. They were unnaturally fast, had hearing like a predator, and possessed inhuman strength, not to mention owning a wicked set of fangs. She suspected that the first generation of daywalker offspring was kept secret to avoid exploiting or exterminating them. She wondered if there were any like Aiden and Serena out there, the children of two daywalkers which produced a full daywalker without the hindrance of creating a bond when drinking blood.
Melody shook her head to stop her line of thinking when Alex asked Parkers to bend his neck and offer himself up. When the ginger haired boy complied, she interrupted. “That’s enough Alex. Let him go.”
Alex merely shrugged and snapped his fingers. The trance was broken and the now scared boy scampered away from him. Alex grinned, flashing his fangs for a moment and then turned to have a seat on her desk.
“There were four that resisted,” Draco said quietly.
Alex nodded. “Melody was able to transfer her thoughts to me earlier. Those four are meant to be mates for the phenoms.”
“Makes sense,” Hermione added. “They would need to resist it to be able to function in our family.”
Alex nodded again. “I’m not so sure about the hunter though.”
“Who is he meant for?” Draco asked.
“Rhapsody.”
Draco chuckled. “She’ll more than likely kill him if he tries anything.”
Alex’s shoulders shook as he tried to restrain his laughter. “There’s a thought.”
“Alright class,” Melody said, “that concludes the live demonstration of vampires. If the first class will go with Professor Snape to potions, we’ll continue on with the book information.”
Groans came from around the room followed by protests and begging to stay. Melody simply waved them away while grinning from ear to ear. It seems that they had made quite the impression. She chuckled when the second class practically kicked them out of their seats. A contemplative expression came over her face before she spun back around to the class.
“Mr. Thompson, Miss LeStrange, and Miss Parkerton, please stay behind for a moment. Professor Snape, do you mind?”
Severus shook his head and watched with sober eyes as the rest of his class filed out. He knew they dreaded his class but it would be nice if just for once, they found potions exciting. Only the three students asked to stay remained before he started to leave. Halfway through the door, he was almost trampled by a raven haired boy carrying a moaning girl with jet black hair.
“James!” Hermione gasped as he flew in.
James Potter was carrying his little sister Lily. The girl seemed to convulse and clutch at him, eyes wide and unseeing. He was gasping for air when he skidded to a stop in front of Melody’s desk. “Help her! Cadence said she didn’t understand.”
“Where’s Harmony?” Melody asked, her voice tense with fright.
“She’s visiting Dumbledore,” James panted.
“Fuck!” Melody screamed. “Give her to Alex, go back, and get Rhapsody immediately.”
“I can’t!” James cried. “Rhapsody went with Albus to visit Grandmum.”
“I’ll retrieve them,” Demitri said softly.
“Severus, portkey,” Melody ordered.
Severus didn’t hesitate as he summoned the familiar tin can and altered the destination for the Headmaster’s office. He still had his privileges as a former headmaster all these years later and he was never so glad. He tossed the trinket to Demitri who grasped it firmly and disappeared with a whoosh.
“Sev,” Melody croaked as she watched Lily struggle in James’s arms. “Dismiss your class. This is…beyond.”
Severus nodded and marched out the door.
“Class dismissed!” Melody barked and turned to coax Lily into Alex’s arms. “Come on Lily, let Grandpa take you.”
“Grandpa!” Lily cried and practically jumped from her brother’s arms into the waiting ones of her blood bound grandfather. She immediately stilled.
Draco’s heart dropped to his shoes. He knew that feeling, the immediate calm when you were in the arms of your true opposite. “It’s not possible!” He whispered fiercely. “She’s not like that.”
“She wasn’t,” Melody’s voice wavered.
“She’s changed?” Hermione gasped.
Tears fell down Melody’s cheeks as she nodded her head. She rushed to her desk and rifled through it before she plopped an old worn out journal down. “That book we got last…it contained only a portion of this one, the part entirely too dangerous to be in the hands of a psychopath.”
“Can we fix it?” Celeste asked. Her eyes were fixed to the poor girl who had gone limp in Alex’s arms.
Melody shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know but she isn’t the only one suffering. I’m sure of it. Alex may calm her but he isn’t what she needs.”
“What does she need?”
The deep voice startled Melody so badly she spun around and let loose a hex. Luckily, the boy had quick reflexes and deflected it easily. It was the hunter, Rhapsody’s mate. His chocolate brown eyes were guarded, as if he expected her to turn on him at any time but his aura, his aura held nothing but concern for Lily, a girl he’d never met.
“I don’t know yet,” Melody said hoarsely. “I’m sorry for hexing you.”
The boy shook his head. “No, I shouldn’t have startled you. I know better than to upset a vampire. I just…couldn’t help it.”
“What did you call me?” Melody asked slowly, her eyes narrowing into slits.
The boy sighed and ran a hand through his thick, black locks. “Look, I know what I am alright? My family is just about ready to disown me because I don’t share their views. I know what everyone in this room is, well, not everyone. Those two feel different.” His eyes locked to Draco and Hermione. “But they still feel…familiar.”
“Name,” Melody demanded.
“Deven Hershell.”
“Well Mr. Hershell, your senses are off because I am not a vampire.”
Deven laughed. “Close enough.”
“You’re a vampire?” Anastasia asked timidly.
Everyone looked up, shocked to see that the three students she’d asked to stay behind were indeed still there. The rest had run out as if they’d been set on fire. It was true then; they were drawn to the odd assortment of family.
“No, Miss LeStrange, I’m not a vampire.”
“Then what are you?”
“A daywalker,” Deven whispered.
“A myth,” Melody hissed.
“It isn’t a myth if you’re standing here,” the quarter giant said.
“Mr. Thompson, what is your full name?” Melody cocked her head to the side. The giant was brave, she decided, incredibly so.
“Matthew Thompson. Just call me Matt.”
“Well Matt,” Melody sighed. “That myth will remain one until there is proof otherwise…and there will be no proof. Am I clear?”
“Crystal,” Matt said firmly. “Why us? Why did you keep us back?”
“You four, Mr. Hershell included, are all immune to the thrall of a vampire. It’s a unique ability, only seen in those with a slightly…altered…genetic and magical makeup.”
Matt paled. “I…I’m normal, just like everyone else.”
Melody laughed bitterly. “Matt, no one, and I do mean that, no one is normal. However, rest assured that no one in this room will be telling a soul, for they all have something to hide as well. Isn’t that right?”
The other three students nodded a bit stiltedly.
“I’m glad we’ve reached an understanding then,” Melody said, her eyes locking with Severus’s as he barged through the door.
“I thought we said dismissed,” Severus snapped.
“Easy Sev,” Melody said gently. “These four are…special.”
Severus’s eyes widened in shock as he looked at each student in turn. “Impossible.”
“It would not appear that way,” Melody said sadly. “Sev, I need you to test her blood.”
“Test it for what?”
“This,” Melody said as she flipped the journal open to a well-worn page and tapped a passage.
Severus snapped his eyes shut, not needing to read it. He already knew it by heart, the urge to vomit almost overwhelming. The passage referred to the initial transfer potion that Melody and Harmony had imbibed to begin the core switch that saved their lives. Since it was only meant for those with an unbalanced core, there was no telling what would happen to those who were normal. Well, if Lily’s reaction was any clue, she was becoming a phenom. But who had switched with her?
“Will she be a squib?” Draco asked softly.
He remembered the state the switch had left Melody and Harmony in, completely devoid of the ability to use magic. He thought it was cruel, to have magic and then lose it. Being a muggle was fine; they didn’t know what they were missing. But to have something so integral to a person ripped away without a second thought, it was devastating. Melody had practically destroyed herself from the imbalance.
“I don’t know,” Melody said softly. “But Sev, please test her. We need to make sure.”
Severus nodded and conjured a vial out of thin air. He gently tapped his wand to Lily’s arm and then to the vial, watching it fill with blood before cancelling the spell. He stopped in the doorway before going to his lab. “It should only take a few moments.”
“How?” James croaked. “She never left our sight.”
“Well, I’m sure there had to have been some moment in between the time you were battling it out like cavemen and being picked up by aurors. It looks to be a delayed reaction. That’s why we need Rhap. She can break in Lily’s head much easier than I can.”
“But why? You’re the best,” James insisted.
Melody gave a sad smile. “Well, thanks for the compliment but I am not her type of special, if you follow me. Rhapsody is. I’ll only hurt her if I try.”
James nodded in understanding. Lily was changing into a phenom and since she went still in Alex’s arms, it was safe to say she was becoming a light phenom. Since Rhapsody was a dark phenom, Lily’s magic, or what was left of it, wouldn’t rebel against her like it would Melody.
“Is there anything we can do while we wait?” Celeste asked.
Melody nodded. “Get Harry. I have a feeling that we’re going to need to spring one of those boys from yesterday. Besides, he needs to know about Lily.”
“Where is he?” Celeste asked.
“He’s at St. Mungos,” Hermione answered. “He was the first one on the call when he learned it was me.”
Celeste nodded and tapped her wand to a stone she pulled from her pocket. “Be back as soon as I can.” She disappeared.
“Draco, Hermione,” Melody began softly. “I want you to go in the next room. It isn’t much more than a broom closet but I need you at your best. I have a feeling you two are our only hope.”
Draco felt Hermione’s breath catch as she scrambled from his lap. “There’s hope then?” He asked.
“There’s a reversal process but with the first procedure incomplete, I’m not sure. I do know that even I am not strong enough for it. It’s why we never studied it. Sev wasn’t either.”
“Wasn’t what?” Severus said as he walked into the room. His face was grave.
“Strong enough to complete the reversal.”
Sev nodded. “Besides the fact that I wouldn’t have reversed it for the world. The test, however, is mostly positive.”
“Mostly?” Draco stopped dead in his tracks on the way to the closet.
“They reversed the amount of the main ingredient, subtracted a few, and added one or two others.”
Melody let out a shriek of rage as she ran across the room and slammed her fists into the white stone wall, leaving an indention. Her hands immediately started swelling, blood dripping from her broken knuckles, but she paid them no attention as she continued to pummel the wall. Since Alex was still coddling Lily, Severus walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder. He neatly ducked her spinning punch and simply scooped her into his arms, whispering grim platitudes until she calmed down.
Hermione’s heart constricted. Lily was Melody’s granddaughter too and she knew from experience that the woman valued her family more than anything else in the world. Her tough act was just that, an act. To see poor Lily in such pain was more than she could handle at the moment. Hermione took it upon herself to heal Melody’s hands while Severus rocked her back and forth. When that was finished, she grabbed Draco and practically dragged him to the closet.
No words were spoken as the door swung shut. Sex this way was always bittersweet, as it had been the first time they’d had to do it. As always, joining was thrilling but they didn’t want to be forced into it. Still, Hermione made the most of it when she boldly cupped the front of Draco’s trousers and kneaded him just the way he liked. He responded with a deep groan and a silencing charm.
“I hate this,” Hermione whispered against his lips.
“You hate touching me?”
“No! I hate that I can’t take my time with you.”
Draco grinned in the darkness. “Just pretend were teenagers again, sneaking a quick shag behind a tapestry at Hogwarts.”
He spun and shoved her up face first against the wall. With a flick of his fingers, the room went from pitch black to softly lit with a singular candle. There was a stool nearby and he slid it into place with just a thought. “Step up Granger, or are you scared? Best hurry though; Filtch’s cat will be along shortly.
Hermione obediently stood on it, a bit breathless at Draco’s playful suggestion. He didn’t usually take her from behind this way. Draco’s large frame towered nearly a foot above her own. However, the small stepstool provided them with just the right leverage to make it possible. She trembled at the thought.
Draco nibbled and sucked on his wife’s neck as he yanked the offending material of her scrubs and knickers away, revealing her already slick quim. He regretted that he couldn’t taste her but they had to hurry. He quickly jerked his trousers and pants down to mid-thigh and entered her in one smooth thrust. The feral growl that escaped him made her shiver.
Hermione’s breath caught at the feeling of her husband’s thick cock filling her so completely. She scarcely noticed that the lone candle had blown out. The only light in the room was their magic combining, strengthening with each thrust into her core. She lost herself in the sensations of her folds being plundered, jumping when his hand reached around and started playing with her clit. She was on the verge of losing it so she grabbed his hand that was braced against the wall and bit down.
Draco howled as her fangs sunk into the tender flesh of his wrist. His climax rocketed through his body, making him weak at the knees and still he thrust as if his life depended on it. He brought his head down to the pale column of flesh above Hermione’s shoulder and tenderly sunk his fangs into it.
Hermione saw stars and a brilliant flare of light as her world spun, white hot ecstasy flowing through her veins. She let his wrist go and gave it a feeble lick before she fell against the wall. His fangs slid out of her and she shuddered when he tenderly laved at the puncture wounds. Thoroughly spent, they barely had enough energy to cleanse themselves and right their clothing before they sunk down to the floor in a heap. It felt as if they could sleep for a year but there would be no such luxury. Loud shouts broke through the blissful haze. They groaned and hoisted themselves up so they could figure out what was going on.
“What’s wrong with her?” Harry’s angry voice reverberated off the walls.
Not only had Harry arrived, but Ginny, Harmony, and Rhapsody were there as well with Demitri lounging against the wall. Half of a dozen voices were talking all at once which served to only frustrate Harry more. Lily was still clinging desperately to Alex, her body trembling with pain and fear.
“ENOUGH!” Draco shouted above the den. Everyone quieted from sheer shock. “Rhap, read her. The closet is free. Melody can discuss it with Harry and Ginny in there. Severus, come point out the fucking part in this bleeding journal that we need to read over. Everyone else be quiet while we figure out what in the fuck we’re going to do!”
With merely a blink, everyone did as they were told. It wasn’t the first time that Draco had taken charge. As the pure couple, they often took the lead on missions. Since the fates had deemed them the protectors, they merely accepted their mantle and carried on. Draco and Hermione settled back in Melody’s desk chair while Severus picked up the journal and thumbed through it.
“Here,” Severus said softly and pointed to a page in the middle of the journal. He sat down on the desk in front of them and leaned in so they could all see the book. “The original ceremony, of which you already know the consequences, is a three step process. It begins with a potion designed to destabilize the magical core. The recipe is here, below the text. The second step is the spell. It actually rips, switches, and replaces the cores. That is listed here as well. The third step is another potion; this one designed to reverse the process of the first potion without undoing the results. The one that Lily has been given is essentially a reversal in the amounts of the main ingredients. If you will compare, they should counterbalance but they do not. Any ideas as to what they were trying to accomplish?”
Draco and Hermione studied both recipes, and more specifically, the individual ingredients in them. The proportions were the key to the entire thing. Thinking back through the thousands of potions lessons, charms research projects, and experiments they’d conducted on themselves and with the other phenoms, the conclusion was obvious. It made them both a little short of breath.
“They’re trying to create a phenom from the soul half that they’ve stolen,” Hermione croaked.
Severus nodded. “I believe so. If you merge two unbalanced cores, as you two have done, you become balanced. If you merge a balanced core with half of another balanced core…”
“But there is a disconnect there,” Draco interjected. “When our minds were bound, our cores were still separate. When our lives were bound, we still had to consummate it. It was only when our bodies…fuck.”
Severus nodded. “It was when your bodies connected that your magic did. It’s why I can bite Melody and take her magic into myself, why a simple touch can lend it, why sex balances you out. It’s the connection. This potion enhances connection. If the affected core touches another, the magic connects.”
“And the magical core is connected to the soul,” Harmony broke in, startling them. “It’s why we lost the ability to cast but not the essence, the very cores we possessed.”
“So if she consumed this potion,” Hermione reasoned, “then she merely needed to touch someone to create the connection.”
Harmony shook her head. “You don’t drink the potion. Instead, you are anointed with it and then you touch the intended partner. If the potions were tampered with, then a touch would start the process, but not seal it.”
“So Lily is bound to some other person that she touched.” Draco shook his head in confusion. “She’s touched all of us. Why did that have no effect?”
“It is only effective for the first touch,” Severus supplied. “That is why this passage urges that there be no outside interference. I had the twins anoint themselves so they wouldn’t have the risk of becoming entangled with me. It is unknown whether Lily was doused or this other person was, but they touched and that was the catalyst.”
“Those necklaces,” Hermione hissed. “They have a life force. That would constitute touching a person. The soul would be bound when the necklace was placed around their neck. Why wouldn’t they bond with that though?”
“Melody said that there were probably only a few active necklaces and the rest were decoys,” Harmony said softly. “They most likely had a decoy.”
“So why douse them with the potion?” Draco frowned.
“Because they didn’t know which necklace was which,” Rhapsody growled. “Someone give me a parchment.”
Harmony thrust a muggle pen and some parchment at her daughter and placed her hand on the shaking girl’s shoulder. Her body seized for a moment and then she let out a scream not unlike one Draco and Hermione had heard eighteen years prior when she touched Harry the first time. She immediately let go and made towards the closet. She needn’t have bothered. The occupants had heard her cries and come running.
“Harry,” Harmony began shakily. “Rhap is drawing the person Lily needs, a boy I believe the aurors still have in custody. You need to free him by whatever means are necessary and bring him here immediately. Celeste will need to go with you to keep him calm on the way here. We’ll have to work quickly or their lives will be forfeit. Go now!”
Harry paled but marched over and grabbed the parchment from a livid Rhapsody. He studied it for a moment and closed his eyes in pain. “I remember him. He said his brother had spilled something on his clothes and gave him a robe to change into. Then he gave him the necklace as an apology.”
Rhapsody nodded. “He was telling the truth. Hurry Uncle Harry.”
Celeste ran up next to them and they disappeared in an instance. Draco grabbed the journal and started breaking down the spell. “Father, we’re going to need to modify this.”
Severus nodded. “I trust you can figure out how?”
“We’ll need help,” Hermione said softly.
Rhapsody turned. “Uncle Sev, you need to create a sealing potion based on the opposite of the one that was used. There…there’s no way to switch them back. If we don’t seal it, they’ll die. They won’t be strong enough to survive the reversal. They’re stuck together…always.”
Severus clenched his fists and nodded. “I’ll get started on it now.”
Rhapsody watched as Severus marched out the door, sans journal. “Uncle Draco, Aunt Hermione, you need to modify the spell based on the potion’s changing qualities. It’s… it’ll probably drain you completely.”
“Where do we need to do this?” Draco asked, already knowing that they wouldn’t hesitate to do it.
“That’s the bad thing. We can’t take them far. It’s risking it to bring the boy here but since we’re all here, it hardly makes sense to go there. Hogwarts could probably sustain it but Salem? There’s no way this school is old and sentient enough to handle that kind of backlash. It will most likely collapse if we don’t go outside.” Rhapsody rubbed her eyes. “That’s the last thing. We’re going to need more than the shield the other three pairs can give you.”
“How much more?” Hermione asked.
“I think it might take all of us,” Rhapsody whispered.
“Can they last one more port key?” Melody asked.
Rhapsody walked over and rubbed her hand across Lily’s forehead again. Her brows were furrowed and she whispered soothing thoughts into the poor girl’s ear. A few minutes later, she nodded and stepped back. “Maybe, but only if we do a blood bond before we leave.”
“A blood bond?” Ginny squeaked. She couldn’t believe her poor little girl would have to be bound by blood to a boy she didn’t even know.
“Not a traditional one,” Rhapsody clarified. “More like the one that, well shit, that isn’t exactly comforting is it?” She shook her head. “It’s like Hermione and Draco now, a bond for stability, but not a vow. It shouldn’t bind them that closely.”
Melody cocked her head. “It should work. Just a small drop should do, enough to still the spell until we can fix it. Harmony, Rhapsody, work it out. I want to do it at the Ranch, in the back…you know the place. We’ll have enough room to spread out and everything should be strong enough to withstand the backlash should something run afoul.”
“You’ll still need an excuse for students off campus,” Rhapsody said softly. “When I said all of us, I meant everyone who isn’t in a hospital bed fighting for their life.”
“Fuck,” Melody snapped. “That’s how many, four?”
“Six.”
“Six?” Melody asked.
Rhapsody nodded. “You’ve found two more that aren’t here right now, haven’t you? Isn’t that why you went nuts last night?”
Melody smacked her forehead. “You’re right. Damn it. Are you sure we need them?”
Rhapsody nodded and grabbed Harmony’s hand. Both women shuddered and then broke apart. Harmony sniffled a bit. “There won’t be time for home. How far can we get off campus?”
Melody bit her lip and waved her hands, a three dimensional grid appearing in their wake. She wiggled her fingers in an intricate pattern and a diagram of the school and surrounding grounds appeared in the grid. A dome appeared over the sprawling eight story school that extended to the grassy planes on the outside. There was a copse of trees beyond that followed by a sharp drop off and a river. Everyone still in the room gathered around the image, including the four very confused seventh years who had been too curious to leave.
“Alright, I imagine everyone can guess what this is. Salem is located just outside of the Caprock, making small cliffs a very real possibility. You can see here that the dome of wards surrounding the school extend to the edge of these trees, mesquite, thick as the jungle, and twice as prickly. The river is also a problem because it has wards on it too. It seems that Whorple was afraid that students would actually try to survive the brush so they could take a swim in it, regardless of the fact that it’s a good five miles out of the way and damn near dry half the year.”
“So our best bet it is to do this smack dab in the middle of the thicket,” Harmony said as she studied the map.
Melody nodded. “What most don’t know is that if you go about fifty feet through the woods to the west, there is a large clearing there. It should be big enough if we form tight shields. Should we fail to contain it, the power would backlash off the school and river wards. It won’t hurt anyone but us.”
“It’ll have to work. Now you just have to convince them.” Rhapsody nodded over at the four seventh years that were still looking pensively at the floating map.
“Ha. You’re hilarious,” Melody said flatly. “Go get everyone but do NOT come inside. Whorple’s already going to have my head on a stake.”
Rhapsody grinned. “You like the challenge.”
Melody snorted. “That’s beside the point. Go. James, you too.”
Draco and Hermione watched as everyone split off. Melody and Harmony were speaking with the four students left in the room. Rhaspody and James port keyed to the Ranch to grab everyone. Ginny and Alex were both trying to keep Lily calm. Everyone was busy, save one.
“Demitri,” Draco called. The vampire was there in a heartbeat. “I want you to go back home and keep watch over my mother. If they can hurt Lily right under our noses, they can do anything.”
Demitri nodded. “I will keep her with me at all times.”
“Thank you,” Draco said sincerely.
Demitri gave a toothy grin. “No thanks are needed. I stopped keeping score between us many moons ago. You opened my eyes young ones. I see what I have been missing. These last few decades have been like a breath of fresh air.”
“What will you do when Narcissa grows older Demitri?” Hermione asked quietly. It had been bothering her for a long while. “She’ll surpass you in visual age soon. What then?”
Demitri’s face grew sad. “She only grows lovelier each year. I will stay with her until she passes from this plane…but I am not sure I will want to remain without her. I have…never felt this way before in all my years.”
“You’re in love,” Draco said softly. “It changes everything…absolutely everything, and there is no better feeling in the world.”
“You are right, young one.” Demitri said softly. “I would not give her up for the world. I will go now. Send a message when young Lily is healed. Narcissa has quite the attachment to her.”
“We will,” Hermione said softly. “Be careful.”
Demitri waited while Draco adjusted the location to his port key and then winked out. Draco grabbed the journal and settled back in the chair so Hermione could read it as well. How in the world were they going to modify the spell to interact with the potion?
“Let’s go speak with Severus,” Hermione murmured. “We’ll need to know what’s in the potion before we can do anything anyway.”
