The sounds of growling stomachs had become commonplace already. Draco smacked his lips together, realizing that he was damned thirsty. How long had it been since he’d had something to drink? Too long. He felt weak and lethargic. He felt exposed. Granger had been giving him odd looks since he’d said the word mudblood. She couldn’t have known. Snape had obliviated her, but she looked so shocked…and sad. She had to know something about it. He hadn’t spoken to her since then, afraid of what she might say.
“Tempus,” Hermione whispered.
48 hours in the room. Two full days. It was still dark with only the flame and the chamber pot inside. The room seemed to be getting colder and without words, Granger had cuddled up a little closer to him to share their warmth. Now they were pressed together shoulder to toe, still shivering on the cold ground that refused to take a warming charm.
“We’ve got to get out of here,” Hermione whispered. “We’ll freeze to death before we starve.”
“No, we’ll die of thirst first,” Draco said, breaking his self-imposed silence.
“Try aguamenti,” she said.
“There’s nothing to catch it. We’ll die faster if we get wet Granger.”
A cup appeared with a bright flash.
“That was brilliant Malfoy. Now say, we’ll die faster if we don’t get out of here.”
“If I thought it would work, I would.”
Hermione snorted at that and grabbed the cup, filling it with water and giving it to Malfoy to drink. His lips were chapped from the cold and he smacked them more than he realized. At first, it had made her want to smack him. But then, she remembered the memories of him saving her…and she didn’t have the strength to do it anymore. Perhaps she could pay off her first life debt by not beating him up.
Draco gulped down the water greedily, wincing when the cold water hit his empty stomach. He cramped for a second and had to pant through the pain. When it subsided, he handed the glass back to Granger, who cleaned it and filled it again. She held it out but he refused. He didn’t want to make himself sick. She shrugged and drank it much more slowly than he had, carefully cleaning the cup and putting it just out of reach when she was done.
“Well, that’s a little better,” Hermione sighed. “But we’ll still starve.”
“My kingdom for a house elf,” Draco muttered.
“What was that?”
“House elf, Granger. You know, little creatures, bat ears, bug eyes, smack themselves with an iron if you act like you’re angry at them.”
“Oh stop,” she huffed, her eyes lighting up a moment later. “But that’s brilliant. House elves, they aren’t bound by the same magic we are. Kreacher said he was able to come home despite several wards preventing him from doing so. Maybe they can get us out of here.”
“Worth a shot. Know any house elves around Hogwarts then?”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “DOBBY!”
CRACK! “Yes miss?”
“Dobby!” Hermione shrieked and grabbed the little elf in a bear hug, swinging him around. She couldn’t help it. She was so happy. “Oh Dobby am I glad to see you.”
“Everyone is very worried Missy Mione. Says they can’t come in.”
“Can you take us out?” Hermione asked.
“Dobby can try,” Dobby said and took each of their hands.
There was a loud crack and his hand disappeared from theirs. They were left standing in the room by themselves, utterly disheartened. Even Dobby couldn’t get them out of this. They were doomed to stay here until someone came and got them. They sat back down in a mechanical fashion, too depressed to realize they’d huddled together again.
CRACK!
“Dobby is so sorry Missy Mione. Dobby will go iron his hands.”
“NO!” Hermione and Draco shouted at the same time, startling each other.
“No Dobby,” Hermione continued much softer. “You tried. That’s all we asked. It’s okay. It’s something about this room.”
“But if you can’t take us out,” Draco continued, “can you bring things in?”
“Dobby tries. What would yous like?”
“Food, please,” Hermione sighed.
CRACK!
Several popping noises sounded all around them. Plates of food appeared and vanished in an instant, Dobby doing the same several times before one lone plate full of food settled in front of them. It contained an apple, some nuts, a few slices of hard cheese, some raw carrots, bread, and some dried meat.
CRACK!
“Dobby is sorry miss. The room won’t allow Dobby to bring food that has already been prepared, and only enough for one person. Dobby will go punish himself now.”
“No Dobby,” Hermione said sternly. “You will not punish yourself. Can you try again in a few hours?”
“Sure Missy Mione. Dobby tries as many times as you want him to.”
“And can you send a message out for us?” Draco asked.
“Yes Master Malfoy,” Dobby said, trembling a little.
“Tell the Professors that we are alive, cold, but alive. Tell them we can only cast spells for basic upkeep and tell them what the room is doing to you as well.”
“Yes, Sir,” Dobby said, bowing so low his ears brushed the ground before he disappeared.
“Well,” Hermione sighed, looking at the food on the plate. “It’s something.”
“Looks like we won’t starve after all,” Draco mused, picking up the apple.
It looked delicious but he couldn’t hog it for himself. If they were going to be in here for any time at all, they’d need to stay healthy. He couldn’t deal with a sick Granger on top of everything else. That meant that they needed a balanced diet. He took out his wand and aimed a slicing hex at the apple, hoping it would work. It was weak, but the apple fell in half. He didn’t dare try it again.
“Thanks,” Hermione said meekly when he handed her half of it.
She didn’t know if he was being nice to her because he felt guilty or because he genuinely cared, but the apple looked delicious. She’d have to make sure he had more to eat this time than her. He was a lot bigger and it had been longer since he’d eaten. They might even have to ration things. She supposed they could save the meat, nuts, and cheese, since they would last longest.
Draco agreed, even though it killed him to do it and set the food beside the glass. They’d each drank a bit more and were now rather tired. In a move he was still questioning in his head, he took off his button down and transfigured it into the fluffiest mattress he could manage. It left him in his vest, but at least they could get off the cold ground.
Without saying a word, Hermione crawled up beside him and lay down. She didn’t think he’d appreciate her making a big deal out of it anyway. He draped his cloak over them and shut his eyes. It was rather strange lying on the ground in a dark, cold room snuggled up with her longtime rival. She didn’t really want to think about it though. This was survival, after all. It didn’t mean anything.
