Chapter 6
Though tired, James Potter II, Jamie to all those that knew him, was irate. It was mid-morning and they were just getting back from the Ministry after his parents and Albus were arrested the day before. Pacing in the small living room, ignoring his food, he didn't know what to do or say here. Honestly? He wanted to go smack his brother for having his parents arrested! Shaking his head, he snarled, “I can't believe Harry had you arrested!”
Knowing what her son was like, having taken after his father in this area, Lily soothed, trying to calm him down before he blew his top, “He didn't have us arrested, Jamie. He had nothing to do with it, actually. That call came from Rufus and Madam Bones. You can't blame Harry for this.” She had actually been pregnant with Jamie when that whole horrible mess in Godric's Hollow took place, though she didn't know it. She hadn't found out until they were in Argentina and, sometimes, when she looked at her second son, she felt immeasurably guilty about Harry. Right now, this was one of those times and she wanted to cry over it, but couldn't.“I'm sure he could have done something so you weren't arrested! I mean, they actually arrested Grandpa Albus too! That's not right!” Jamie huffed, looking at his mother.“In this case, it was the proper thing to do, Jamie,” Albus told him gently, smiling. “We made many mistakes it appears, and we have to pay for those now. Remember, we told you that coming back wasn't going to be easy and there would be problems. What happened was part of that, nothing more. We'll deal with it accordingly and move on from there.”“Harry had nothing to do with it, Jamie,” James told his son softly. Plopping in a chair, resting his elbows on his knees and looking down, he shook his head, “We actually didn't see Harry for more than a couple of minutes before Sirius took him away and didn't exchange more than a few words. It was Remus and Snape that came out to deal with us.”“You said Remus was your friend, a good one,” Sarah said softly, shaking her head, looking between her parents. She was a little over a year younger than Jamie, though much more level headed and taking after her mother in many areas. “Why would he do that if he was your friend, dad? I don't understand that part.”“Remus, apparently, is one of Harry's fathers. Snape is the other one. They're married, from what they said. We knew that they adopted him, but assumed it was something else other than being together,” James said with a shake of his head. “I don't know here. We'll work with the situation, don't worry. We're probably going to get a fine, a big one, but the worst of the charges they can't file because the statute of limitations ran out a few years ago. It'll be handled, don't worry. That we made sure of and hired a solicitor to help us. He assures us we're not facing jail time.”Looking around, Maggie, the youngest, having just turned eleven a month or so ago, asked quietly, “What's all this going to mean for us? You said you'd talk Harry into letting us live in one of the houses and to get access to the money he has. Is that going to happen?” This was something she didn't know how to handle or what to think about it. It was so confusing!“No,” Albus sighed, stroking his beard. Schooling his voice into something soothing, he said, making a placating gesture, “It's nothing to worry about, I promise. We have plenty of money, so that's not an issue. Harry only inherited a part of it. I also have plenty of assets to work with. We'll do fine on that front. For now, we're going to have to stay here. It's small and not as comfortable as we're used to, but we'll manage. Next week, Jamie and Sarah will be off to Hogwarts for what remains of the term, so it'll only be the four of us staying here. We'll manage until we can find a suitable house and buy it. I promise, we'll start looking for that tomorrow. It shouldn't be a problem to find something nice and comfortable.”“Can't you talk to Harry or something, dad? And explain the problem? I mean, he's probably angry, but he would listen, wouldn't he? Or go to Sirius? You said he's Harry's godfather and that you were good friends,” Sarah asked, looking between the adults, brow furrowed. This was quite upsetting and she didn't know what to do or think here.“Harry doesn't want to talk to us,” Lily said, looking down, eyes burning slightly. Sighing, she shook her head then told her child, “He's had a hard life, from what we understand, worse than we could have ever imagined. And he's angry. I don't blame him there. We expected him to be, actually, but this is worse than we planned for. And everyone's made it clear that Remus and Severus are his parents, so what they say on the matter is final. They're saying no, so we don't have a way to talk to him right now.”“Sirius—that's not a good idea,” James admitted quietly, running his fingers through his hair and shaking his head. “He—what we planned for there didn't happen. I don't think I even want to try to talk to him, actually. He would probably hex me within an inch of my life and some of what he would do wouldn't be reversible. For now, we don't have much of anything we can do. Until Remus, Snape or Harry decides to let us talk to him, we have to go on as we are and not count on some things, like the money and house.”“I don't get this,” Jamie huffed, shaking his head and crossing his arms over his chest. “You lot said it was Snape that betrayed you in the first place and told that evil idiot the prophecy, at least part of it. Why is he Harry's dad then? I mean, if that's the case, he has to be poisoning Harry against you now!”“Severus did give the prophecy to Voldemort,” Albus told him gently. “However, he was also a spy for us. He came to me and told me what he did so I could ensure that your mom and dad were protected. That saved their lives, Jamie. Remember that in the future. He also promised to protect Harry. That he's doing and there is no one more capable of taking on that job than Severus.”“Yeah, well, I'm sure past history is playing a part here too, Albus,” James muttered softly, shaking his head. “Lucius Malfoy is also involved in this. Nothing good will come of anything with him around. We all know what that arsehole was like.”“Lucius was a spy as well, James,” Albus soothed. “We just kept it quiet as he was in more danger than Severus. He might not be the most pleasant person to deal with, but he was on our side.”Looking between her parents again, Sarah asked, “Just what is going on? Everyone said that Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon weren't nice, but they would raise Harry right. How bad is it and what did they do to him? And why doesn't he go to school? You said he isn't.”“Your aunt and uncle didn't find Harry on the doorstep as we planned,” Lily explained, wringing her hands and shaking her head. “Someone stole him off the step before morning came. He—your brother's had a very hard life, one he's still trying to deal with. They didn't find him and bring him into our world until a couple of years ago. It's our understanding, from what little we've been told, that he never went to school, at all, so he can't go to Hogwarts because he doesn't even have the basic skills needed to try.” Looking around at her children, she said, “We aren't sure of the full extent of what Harry went through, but it was bad, really bad, worse than we can imagine. He's someone with many problems. Just give us some time to work with what's here and to see what we can manage. I hope, at some point, he'll agree to talk to us.”“We will,” Albus assured the children with a smile. “Just be patient. We need to figure out just what your poor brother went through and what's going on to manage that. Once we do, we'll have a better feel for what we can manage here. I don't think we're going to get into one of the estates or the money, but, at some point, you can at least meet him and see if you can't establish some kind of relationship. It's just going to take time.”“Let your mother and I work with the situation,” James told his kids, looking around. “We're going to see what we can do here to talk to Harry. It's just going to take us some effort, nothing more.” Looking at Albus, he asked, quietly, “Have you managed to get in touch with anyone that can help us here? So far we're getting nowhere when it comes to getting information, beyond what was in the papers. And I think we need to know! That’s only going to help in working with what's going on.”“I did,” Albus told him with a nod. “Minerva is going to come over tonight. She's found a couple of the old crowd to come with her. She's—not happy, of course, but she's agreed to help. We'll go from there once we talk to her.”“At least something is going right,” James muttered, shaking his head.“There's one thing I want explained,” Jamie said, looking between the adults. “We overheard some people talking while we were at the Ministry. They said Harry and Sirius are a couple of some kind. Is that true? Is Harry gay?”“That's our understanding,” Lily said softly, looking at her son. “Severus and Remus approve of it, so I don't think there's anything 'bad' there.” Lowering her voice, though taking a firmer tone, she said, “And you know that being gay isn't something bad or wrong. I expect you not to say anything about that, James Potter.”“Sirius is the same age as you and dad,” Jamie said incredulously, looking at her. “That's just—wrong! I mean, wow! If I brought someone home that age, you'd skin me.”“We don't have any say in this,” James groused, looking sour and shaking his head. “I tend to agree with you there, though.”“We don't know just what's going on or the reason behind it so, until we figure it out, we need to say nothing,” Lily told everyone, looking around. Then she added, smiling a little, “If he is with Sirius, he has the best protection in the world, so no one will ever hurt him. Sirius will love him in a way that no one else ever would. That's not wrong and is something your brother probably needs right now.”“It's still rather sick if you ask me,” Jamie groused, shaking his head.“Again, I agree,” James said, making a face, but keeping his voice low enough that the kids couldn't hear him. “Alright, we need some rest, all of us,” he finally said, looking around. “We have lots to do and prepare for. Your mother and I have something to do tonight, so we need to get some sleep. When we get up we'll be more clear-headed and can work with what's here better.” Standing and clapping his hands, he began to shoo everyone towards their rooms. Rest probably wouldn't come for him or Lily, what with some of what they heard, but they needed to try. After all, it sounded like they were probably going to be out late that night.
Huffing, fighting the urge to roll his eyes, though entirely amused, Lucius looked down at his wife, who was clinging to his chest, laughing so hard there were tears running down her cheeks. Then he told her, tone firm, but unable to disguise the humorous bent at what he was seeing, “Woman! You are being less than helpful here. We enlisted you to aid in us getting ready. You can't do that if you're laughing so hard your wand hand is shaking! Harry, Severus and I don't want our mustaches permanently affixed to our faces because the spell went wrong due to you laughing so hard you may wet yourself!”
Clutching onto Lucius, Narcissa stammered, “I'm trying, I really am. You all, though—I can’t help it! It's hilarious!” Looking up at her husband, seeing him in that red feathered—whatever you wanted to call it, she hitched, laughing harder, “This is just too funny!”Unable to stop it, Lucius rolled his eyes, but smirked, hearing the chuckles from around him. “Pull yourself together, Narcissa! Your assistance is required. Severus and I need the mustaches, Harry needs his makeup and mustache. The others probably need some help as well.”“Yeah, I do,” Sirius admitted with a nod, looking at the fur coat he was in, arms outstretched. “This thing is molting or something. Every time I move, it drops like a ton of fur here. You need to put some kind of spell on it to stop that or I'm going to be in a fur coat that has bald patches on it by the end of the night.” Shaking his arms, he watched as there was an almost a shower of fur coming off the coat.“I need more than makeup here,” Harry admitted, looking down at his legs as he tugged at the leather miniskirt. “First, I need someone to explain to me how in the hell girls can walk in these high heels without breaking their damned neck or wobbling all over. Then something needs done about these damned fishnet tights. It's pulling the hair on my legs and that bloody hurts!”
Chuckling, Sirius offered helpfully, grinning, “Cissy could do the hair removal spell birds use on their legs. That would stop the pulling.”
“We can do without the picture,” Sirius shouted at her retreating back, though knowing it was a losing cause.
Seated at a table next to the dance floor, Severus leaned back and sipped his drink, keeping an eye on Harry, Sirius and Lucius. They were on the dance floor having a good time. Sirius and Harry were dancing rather suggestively, but it wasn't anything any of them couldn't handle. Lucius was there as well, ensuring that most stayed away as he joined in with the duo. This was good. So far there were no problems and they hadn't seen James or Lily. Sighing, he said, casting a noise muting charm under the table so he could be heard, leaning over to the other two, “So far, so good. No sign of trouble.”
“I'm sure they're around,” Remus said with a sigh, pushing his soft drink can around while glancing about. “They aren't going to give up that easily and that restraining order isn't going to stop them. James—I doubt he's changed enough that he would just do the adult thing and back off.”
Shaking her head sadly, eyes locked on the trio on the dance floor, Narcissa asked, “Is there anything you can do to stop this? I mean, I agree with what Remus said. Harry doesn't need this.”“We're going to try everything legal we can come up with,” Severus told her. “That's not going to put a complete halt to anything and we know it. We just have to wait and see what comes then deal with it accordingly.”“Maybe Harry should come stay with Lucius and me until this calms down,” she suggested softly, looking between the two.“Though I like that idea, as it would keep him out of the mess for as long as we can, I think it's not wise. He wouldn't like it for starters, though he adores Lucius and doesn't mind staying there. He's attached enough to Sirius now that he doesn't want to be without him. That, in and of itself, is a good thing. Plus, it might set back all the progress he's made in so many areas, like getting out without being so wary. We want him to keep doing that and not let something like this affect him.” Remus told her with a shake of his head.“We're going to try to push for the legal ways here while doing what we are tonight to ensure that Harry can go on much the way he has been,” Severus explained with a sigh. “He has so much he's facing, like the next round of surgery in a week, that neither of us want to completely turn his life on its head and backtrack in this area. As Rufus said, he needs to keep moving forward.”“How much can the Ministry do?” Narcissa asked, looking between the two.“We don't know,” Remus admitted honestly with a shake of his head. “Rufus and Amelia, both, have assured us they'll do all they can in this area. It's just not something they have to deal with often and there aren't many laws in place. Not to mention this is such an odd situation that they're at a loss about what they can even do to prosecute the three for some of this.”Folding his arms over his chest, Severus glared at the table, sneering, “The worst of the charges they could have leveled at them can't come about because of the statute of limitations ran out. Those were the big ones that would have resulted in jail time. We were told that the worst to come from this will be heavy fines. That's not enough, everyone told us that, but it's all they can do. It'll be publicized in the paper tomorrow they're back and that'll result in some backlash towards them, but that's not enough either.”Sighing, Narcissa shook her head sadly then said, “Do they actually know just what happened to Harry?”“We don't know that either,” Remus told her, glancing at the dance floor and the trio. “They know some, but don't seem aware about other parts.”“Maybe you can set up some kind of meeting with them to explain this? I don't know. I don't mean involve Harry, obviously. That would be disastrous, for plenty of people. Like with Harry's Mind Healer. Set it up and have the both of you talk to them to lay it all out and what can come if they keep pressing with this asinine behavior.”Thinking that over, Severus gave a slow nod then said, tone thoughtful, “That might be a good way to handle this. They can get slapped with the reality of just what went on with Harry and he won't be involved when we do it. That way, when Rufus sets up what he talked about, what Harry will say to them should have more impact. Let me get with the Mind Healer and see what he says about it.”Looking up to watch the three on the dance floor, Narcissa smiled a little then said, softly, “He's so much better now than what he was. Some of this—it was unthinkable even a short time ago. And he's good for so many others as well. I love the way my husband is now, as does Draco. We attribute that to Harry and how this all changed him. No, we can't let them pull this or let it bother him.”“We're going to do all we can with that, Narcissa,” Remus told her with a smile. “We'll work with it as it comes and press on from there.”
Standing off in a small stand of trees in the park near the club, James and Lily watched the six Apparate away, presumably going home from their outing at the club. Shaking his head, voice quivering, James said, “I cannot believe this shite! They are letting our son go to places like this. Not only that, he's dressed in fucking women's clothes! No! This has to stop.”
Looking at the place they all vanished from, Lily put a hand on her husband's arm and patted it. “I don't think it's as it seems, James. It looks to be some kind of fancy dress party. There isn't any harm in that, you know.”“He's sixteen, Lily! He doesn't need to go places like this! Even if it is a fancy dress party, he sure as hell doesn't need to go in drag! We wouldn't let Jamie do things like this!” James told her firmly. “I don't know what they're thinking, but this needs to stop, now. Whatever is wrong with him, this shite isn't going to help.”Sighing, Lily soothed, “We'll keep an eye on it, James. Don't do anything rash that will make the whole situation worse. Let's find out just what's going on, then we'll see what we can do from there.”Shaking his head, looking furious, James sighed, “Let's go home and see what Albus has to say. He was going to talk to Minerva while we were gone. Maybe she told him something that can explain some of this to us.” Seeing his wife nod, he sighed then they Apparated away. This was bad and he didn't know what to do.
Standing in front of his dresser in nothing but sleep shorts, Harry fingered the CD cases there, grinning as he did. Lucius had won the contest and had given him the CDs. The man had then donated the cash that came with it to the foundation supported by the event. He had actually taken third place in the contest, winning a couple of things himself. Sirius had won for best mustache and Remus, surprisingly, had won a prize as well for most popular costume as voted on by those in the club. The prizes were great, of course, but they had fun. For Harry, that was the most important part. It had been great to go out with everyone and have fun. Even Severus, Miss Cissy and Remus had a good time from what they said.
Picking up the picture of all them in costume that Miss Cissy took, Harry smiled. It was funny, no doubt there, to see all of them dressed like that, but he liked it for other reasons as well. It was like he had a small capture of proof to the fact that there were now plenty of people around him that cared. They each cared in a different way, of course, but it felt good to have that. Especially knowing that none of them would have done something like this on their own and only agreed because it was something he wanted. That felt wonderful.Sitting down the picture, he picked up Bugs when the rabbit came over after eating his treat. His life—it was hard, he would admit that. And he sure as hell didn't like what was going on now, but the rest was good. He was safe with people that really cared about him. They wouldn't hurt him either and wanted nothing other than what he was willing to give. That was great.Looking up as the bathroom door opened, he grinned at Sirius when he came out dressed in a pair of boxers. Quietly, he said, “Thanks for tonight. I know you didn't like the costume, but it was a great time.”Walking over to Harry, Sirius pulled him into a one-armed hug and kissed him on the head. Grinning, he said, “Despite the strange shite, I had a great time. That was a riot. I don't mind doing this crap, honestly, just—next time we pick something that has more normal costumes to wear.”Leaning against Sirius, Harry grinned, “Alright, more normal next time, I promise.”Sighing, Sirius held the young man close then said, softly, “It was fun. I like doing this shite with you. What you like isn't things I used to do, so not only is it something new, but doing it with you makes it even more fun. Lucius feels the same way. Just a few years ago, him going in a costume like that would be unthinkable. He would do something, especially if it was for charity, but never something that outrageous. You've changed him. That's great too. We all like it. Hell, even Snape and Remus had fun. Something like the club really isn't their thing. So, we're good Harry.” Seeing the younger man smile and nod, Sirius told him, softly, “We need to get to bed. You have a Healer's appointment tomorrow.”Sighing, Harry petted Bugs then said, tone disgruntled, “Yeah, I do. Hate that crap, but it has to come. Alright, bed it is.”“It won't be so bad,” Sirius said, leading him over to the bed. “I'll sit in there with you, so you won't be alone.”Flopping on the bed, putting Bugs down so the rabbit could find a place to get comfortable, Harry nodded, “Yeah, I'd rather have you with me than Severus and Remus, what with where they'll be checking.”Stretching out by Harry, Sirius put an arm around him then said, “I thought so. No problem there. I can do that. Let's get some sleep.”Putting the lights out with his wand, Harry set it on the bedside table then curled up to Sirius, draping an arm over him. Sighing softly, he smiled a little. It was good and he liked it. Now, if all the other shite would just go away, he'd be much better.
