Chapter 7
Looking at the list in his hand, Sirius scratched his chin then said, tone distracted, “The lab is ready to go. We got that finished off this morning. I'll let Snape know when I send off the daily report to him so he can get us the ingredients we need. The greenhouse is mostly done. It's at least good enough that Pomona can send us the plants we need and we can store them. It'll still be a couple of more days until it's completely finished, but we're good there. Which means at the start of the week we'll be able to kick off with the classes. Work for the three of you?” He asked, glancing up at Lucius, Narcissa and Draco who were seated across the table from him.
“It does,” Lucius said, pleased with that. “When is Minerva coming over to do the career counseling?”“This weekend when she gets the time,” Sirius said tossing the list on the table then taking a sip of his tea. Brow furrowing as he thought about that strange arse dream he had a few nights ago, he said, “I think I'm going to see if I can't get Rufus over here in the next couple of days to talk to Harry about that. Auror training is out, we all know that, but if he wants to go to work for the DMLE there is plenty he might be able to do there that doesn't involve what he can't do. I thought he might be able to lay out some options that Harry might like and would be more enthused by than just going into History.”Sitting her cup down, Narcissa looked at her cousin then said, impressed, “That's a very good idea! Let's see what he can come up with then mention it to Minerva. We'll go from there when Harry decides.”“Any plan in place as to how we can say we came about him knowing about such careers? It's not something we would normally come across with,” Lucius asked though liking the idea.“Yeah, actually, I do. I'm going to get with Moody and say something about it coming from that direction. He would know about those areas and would gladly give Harry advice about what's out there if he's asked. Albus wouldn't think anything was off either,” Sirius said, looking around. Seeing pleased nods, he continued, “Alright, we'll press on with the rest of the classes as well. We've got one of the old parlors warded to use for that so we don't blast something into oblivion. What we think is one of us is going to work with Draco on practical while the other does theory with Harry. Some of them Harry can take the practical as well, but other's he can't.”“He still having problems?” Draco asked, shifting around on the bench.“Some,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “Spells he doesn't have to worry about directly pointing at or accuracy with he's good with now. It's the ones you have to be precise, he's having issues with. And he's plenty frustrated over it. The spells work fine as the wand is channeling his magic perfectly, it's the trembling that's making him mental.” He explained. “The new potions are helping. We've noticed they are calming the tremors. It'll just take time for them to fully get into his system enough to have the maximum effect. If they even cut it in half from what it is now, he's going to be fine. Remus is working with him a little at the moment as he's calmer about it. Harry had a pretty good blowup from frustration earlier over some of it, so we thought it best to let him handle it for a while and switch to spells that you don't have to be dead on accurate with.” He was about to press on and discuss a little more about that end when he was startled by Harry's stag Patronus cantering into the kitchen through the wall. Grinning, he said, “Like I said, it's channeling perfect! And he can do it.”Stopping at the head of the table, the stag opened its mouth then said in Harry's voice, “We're done for a while, so we’re coming in to get lunch.” Stopping, the stag looked around then added, “Oh, yeah, tell us if it worked with the talking when we get there.” Then the luminous stag vanished.“Impressive,” Lucius said with a smirk and a nod, looking at where the stag had been.“That should make him feel a bit better about the frustration,” Narcissa said with a smile.“Someone needs to teach me to do that,” Draco chuckled.“We can do that,” Sirius said with a grin. “Or Harry can. He taught the lot of them last year, so I bet he can easily manage with you.”“I'll say something to him,” Draco nodded, looking up as the door opened and Harry started to come in, followed by Remus.Though his first instinct was to stand and help Harry, Sirius stayed seated. The faster Harry learned to get along with the cane, the better off he was going to be. As it was, he was doing good, though he was slow. Sliding down to make room on the end for Harry to sit, Sirius grinned then said, “We got your message loud and clear. Good job there.”Waiting until Harry was seated, Remus took the place on the other side of his friend and said, “We were caught up with all I wanted to go through with him, so I thought we would work on that as he's having no problem producing his Patronus. He had it down in a couple of minutes. I thought it was something he could use if he needed help.”“Something I wouldn't have thought about,” Sirius admitted. Nudging Harry, he said, “We're going to have you teach Draco how to do it. If you can manage with Neville, you can teach him easily. We'll then teach him to send messages so if he needs something, he can use it.”After a sip of his drink, Harry said, “I can do that.”“You taught Longbottom?” Draco asked incredulously, eyes wide.“Yup. Him and everyone else,” Harry nodded. “I'll manage with you.”Listening in, Remus smiled, “Harry was quite good at it from what we heard.” Looking around, he said, “I think he's had enough lessons for today, so we won't be doing anything this afternoon. Let the frustration die down a little before we press on tomorrow.”“We'll find something to do this afternoon,” Sirius said as lunch appeared on the table. “If nothing else, we can sit in the backyard. The elves have it cleaned out. I think the fresh air would do us all some good.”Nodding as he put food on his plate, Harry said, “Works for me. I need to write letters to everyone at some point.”“When you want to work on them, find me and we'll practice with the dict-o-quill,” Narcissa told him softly. “The more practice you get with it, the better you're going to get.”“I will,” Harry nodded.
Sitting in the small living room with just Remus, Sirius looked at his friend after laying out the idea from that dream of Harry and Quidditch. By now, he was sure that what came in the dream was workable, at least part of it, though he wasn't convinced it was James that had presented it. He thought, maybe, that it was just his mind's way of chucking up those ideas. Other parts he still was iffy on, like that Harry was gay. That he wouldn't say anything about to anyone until he observed more. He would then go from there. “What do you think?” He asked quietly.
Rubbing a finger over his mustache, Remus pondered what Sirius suggested then nodded slowly. “It's something, if we take precautions, like the helmet that Keepers use, that I don't see where it would harm anything. Even now, Harry has quick enough reflexes that he's not going to take a Bludger to the head. Poppy may not agree, nor would someone like Molly, however I don’t see any harm in this.” He finally said looking at Sirius.“It's going to give him back some sort of normalcy,” Sirius told him quietly. “I don't see the harm here myself. It might go a long ways towards proving that just because some things are a struggle now it doesn't mean other parts aren't the same. I thought that the first few times I'll ride with him to make damned sure there isn't a problem and that he has time to adjust to steering the broom with the new problems he has. I just thought—shite, even normal things like walking down the stairs can be dangerous when it comes to re-injuring his head if he falls. We all know how often that happens. The same with all kinds of other common accidents.”“Very true,” Remus conceded. “I would say the first couple of times to tell Draco to be cautious until Harry gets a feel for what he's dealing with, but it might do both of them some good.” Smiling, he said, “It's a good idea, Sirius. I say we try it over the weekend to see what happens. Then go from there.”“We'll do that,” Sirius said with a firm nod. Thinking it over, he then changed topics and said, “The bit with Tonks--” Hearing a groan, he chuckled and grinned. This had been a topic they had talked about for a while now and they were getting nowhere with it as Remus was determined to not let it go any further. “Zip it until you hear me out,” he snorted, grinning bigger.Leaning back and folding his arms over his chest, Remus told him firmly, “Sirius, this isn't workable. I refuse to saddle her with this kind of burden! I've made that clear.”“Tell me this—if you had a good, steady income, would you be willing to give it a go?” Sirius asked, looking at him.“It wouldn't solve all the problems, but it would the major one and I'd reconsider. That's just not possible right now, what with the laws the way they are,” Remus told him pointedly. Shaking his head, he added, “And I don't see that changing any time soon either, what with the war.”“I might have a way to get you that income that doesn't involve a job, at least that kind,” Sirius said, grinning. “If it works out, I bet you can get a job with two people that your condition won't bother a bit.”“Say I'm intrigued,” Remus told him, eyebrow arched. “However, I'm not agreeing to anything until I know what it is, Sirius.”“Fred and George had that map of ours before Harry and have no idea who the Marauders were,” Sirius launched in. “We could sell them not only the template, but get a percentage of what they sell. That's just one of the many 'toys' we made. Those mirrors James and I used are another. They would make a ruddy fortune with those two things alone. And if we get a percentage, you won't have to worry about the money end of this problem.”Nodding slowly, Remus said, “True. They would pay a very nice sum of money for some of what we did and would be fair about a percentage of the profits. However, keep in mind how many teachers in that school know who the Marauders were, Sirius. They would hex us into oblivion for giving up those kinds of things to where students could get their hands on them. Their jobs are hard enough as it is that they don't need anything to make it worse!”“There is that, yeah,” Sirius conceded with a sigh. “I was thinking though—remember what was in that back room for the Ministry workers?” Seeing his friend nod, he pressed on, “We could arrange something like that, for teachers. The mirrors and some of the other things we did would be perfect for fast communication for not only the teachers, but some in the Ministry. The map, because we know the charms, could be made for any area, like the Ministry, Hogsmeade, stuff like that. And we would make damned sure that the name Marauders appears nowhere so we don't end up being on the wrong side of anyone's wand.”“That could work, yes,” Remus said thoughtfully, rubbing his chin. “The mirrors would be a boon for many, including those in the Order. It's far more reliable than the Patronus.”“We have a ton of other things we did as well,” Sirius added. “Those are just the two I can think of off the top of my head. Add on the fact that both of us could come up with all kinds of shite those two haven't thought of and I can bet my wand they would hire both of us in seconds as consultants. That's a good, steady income, Remus. You wouldn't have to worry about money and pulling your weight there.”“Very true,” Remus told him, thinking it over seriously.“Let me put out some feelers to those two and see what they say. We'll then go from there.” Lowering his voice, Sirius said, “It's worth a shot. They are good, no doubt, but we have experience they don't. On top of that, what you know when it comes to defense and how to protect yourself could be a huge plus in helping them develop products.”“I think—yes, I'll let you do that,” Remus conceded with a nod. “I just don't want the name Marauders out there with it.”“Neither do I!” Sirius laughed. “Snape and Minerva alone would kill us. We won't add anyone else. Let me get with them this week and see what we can manage. I'm sure Lucius knows enough about contracts and such that he can help us. Let's see what we can manage here. Then you press on with Tonks.”
Signing his name to the letter to Ron while Narcissa steadied his hand, Harry gave a sigh. This wasn’t bad, it just took forever was all. He was getting used to the dict-o-quill, so using that took a lot longer than just normal writing it out would. It was something he needed to get used to was all, so he was working with it.
Dropping the quill when he finished, Harry shook his head. He was feeling a little 'off' right now and didn't know why. Reaching up, he ground the palm of his hand in his left eye. It was twitching a little and he was starting to see flashing lights out of the corner of it. That was odd and he hadn't experienced anything like it before either. There was also a funny smell he was picking up on. As he knew that there was nothing around to cause it, he wasn't sure what to make of it. Then there was a tingling, like his arm left arm was going to sleep. The only think he could think was that he was just tired from all he did so far today. It was getting better, the lethargy and feeling worn out, but it still cropped up once in a while. Sighing, he shut his eyes and leaned back then said, “I'm feeling a little off, so it might be a good idea to knock off for a bit.”Sitting the letter aside, Narcissa told him, “That's fine. You probably need some rest.” Looking at Harry, seeing him rubbing his left eye, a strange expression on his face, she asked, gently, “Is something wrong?”“No, nothing, just feeling off is all, as I said,” Harry told her with a sigh.Knowing they had to keep an eye out for some strange symptoms for various reasons, Narcissa had him describe what was going on. As she listened, her eyes widened. Oh, she knew these well! Not only had she experienced a few of them herself, but her mother had the others and she knew just what was coming from it. Summoning an elf, she had the creature go fetch not only Lucius, but Draco as well. Standing, she grabbed Harry's cane, draping it over her arm then said, “I need you to come with me, Harry. Just lean on me so we can move quickly.”Bewildered, Harry stood and took her arm, leaning, though trying not to do so heavily, against her. “What's going on?” He asked as she led him out of the room, moving as quickly as she could with him leaning against her.“Remember Poppy mentioning headaches that might be coming?” She asked, hurrying them along, knowing that time was of the essence here. Seeing him nod, she said, “I'm sure that's what you're about to get. Your symptoms are the same ones that come right before a migraine hits.” Just as they were at the foot of the stairs, her bewildered husband showed up. Looking at Lucius, she said, “I need you to get him up the stairs and into his room as fast as you can.” Summoning another elf, she sent the creature to the room to darken it, lower the temperature and ready the bed. When Draco came as Lucius was starting to get Harry up the stairs, she sent him to find Sirius, telling her son to make sure her cousin brought the medicine for the headaches Poppy had given them then took off up the stairs as fast as she could get the room ready.Just as Lucius was helping him into the bedroom, Harry was sure his brain was starting to melt. A headache that was only on the left side of his head hit all at once and it was among the worst pain he had ever experienced. Gritting his teeth, he groaned as the light in the room seemed to make it throb even more. Shaking his head, he stammered out, “Headache!” Then, feeling his stomach start to churn, he added, “I think I'm going to be sick.”Having Lucius help him to the bed, Narcissa conjured a basin and got it to the young man just in time. Sighing, she had an elf bring a cold pack and waited. She knew there generally wasn't a lot of time to prepare for these, but Harry's had come on quickly. When the young man finished, she had him lay down and cover his eyes with the ice pack then shooed everyone out, making sure the lights were out.Stepping into the hall, she met a concerned Remus and Sirius, who was carrying the potions. Shaking her head, she sighed, “It's a migraine. Get it to him and it's probably going to take more than one dose of it. Just be quiet and don't turn the lights on if you can at all help it.”Groaning, Sirius nodded then let himself into the room to tend to Harry.
Two hours later, Sirius was seated on Harry's bed, running his fingers through his godson's hair. Finally, the potions took hold enough that Harry wasn't throwing up and moaning in pain. Bloody hell, that had been bad to go through. Any light, sound or movement just seemed to set off more pain for poor Harry. And there hadn't been anything he could do beyond what he had already done. He had given the potion just how it had been prescribed, one dose every fifteen minutes, but it hadn't seem to help much at all. That was just an absolutely helpless feeling.
Leaning his head back and shutting his eyes, he groaned. Oh yes, he would be getting in contact with Poppy and getting her to give them the medicine to prevent another one, because he didn't think either one of them could go through that again. Thankfully, Cissy had known what it was and what steps to take to at least help. He would have been completely lost without that.Sighing softly, he wondered how much more was coming when it came to dealing with this. He hoped it wasn't a lot and the worst was over. If that was the case, they would manage. However, his mind kept skipping back to that odd dream, wondering how much in it was factual. If most of it was, the physical part was something he could handle. It was the other he was worried about. That might end up worse to deal with than the physical part, especially if Harry was like him in that area.Looking down as Harry groaned then rolled onto his stomach, moving his head off his lap, Sirius then smiled. That was a good sign, it meant he was finally deeply asleep. Shifting around, he laid down and spooned up next to Harry's side, draping an arm over him. Shutting his eyes, he held Harry close and began to replay so much, looking for some sign, somewhere, that might indicate that his godson was living the same lie he had for so many years.
