Blind faith chapter 7
Breakfast was a quiet affair, they had not been able to get much sleep after what happened last night and it showed. They looked sleep deprived and worried.
“I studied some of the books I picked up,’ Narcissa ventured. “They have lots of suggestions to help Harry become more independent. Though safety wards can protect him for now they will not help him when he starts moving further away.”
Severus blinked at her sleepily, clutching a cup of coffee to his chest. Realizing how much change he had forced upon the Malfoy family. Having them take in a traumatized and handicapped boy was asking them to change their lives for someone they never cared for.
“Thank you.” He said softly, surprising the other two who stared at him confused. “I called upon you to help and you give me everything.” He said, refusing to look at them.
“Love,” Lucius said, gently taking his lover in his arms. “We are doing this for both of you. No child deserves what Harry got. Magical children need to be protected, no matter if they are pure-blood, half-blood or even muggle born. No child should ever be abused for their natural magical abilities.” Lucius said, talking as much about Severus himself as about Harry. It had been for that very reason that Severus had joined Voldemort in the first place, the charismatic leader had promised protection for all magical children. That muggle children were really lost children of the true race and should be taken away from their parents and raised in the pure blood ways.
“Go see your son. We will plan the spells needed and start casting.” Lucius told him. Even after the coffee Severus did not look much better and zombie like he moved off to the floo. Smiling a little when he found a large dog standing squarely in front of the fire place demanding to be taken along this time which gave Severus an idea. He rushed upstairs to get Jacobs harness and packed a small backpack of Draco’s with some of Harries books and toys. Hoping to help the boy feel at ease in the hospital.
Putting the harness on Jacob, Severus hoped that the trainer had been right and that the guide dog was allowed in the hospital with them. The healer at the floo frowned at the dog but let them though, Severus enquired about Harry and found out he had been moved to a private room. Resolutly the potions master stalked though the hallway, checking the door numbers until he found Harry’s room.
Jacob whined softly seeing his master. Harry was curled up in the corner of his bed, sweaty and shivering hard. Severus frowned at the picture before him, why were the healers not dealing with this. What was wrong with his foster son?
“Hello harry,” he said, forcing the cheer in his voice but watching the boy concerned.
“Good morning sir,” a healer said cheerily, startling Severus who grabbed his wand. But the healer seemed oblivious to the danger he had brought on himself and simply came over to the bed.
“He came through the night well but is jumpy and frightened since his sleep potions wore off.” The healer told Severus, watching the man for a moment.
“Good morning Harry,” He continued, approaching the small ball of a boy. “ I just need to check your lungs and head but after that you can have some breakfast.” The young healer told the boy, impressing Severus by the way he talked to Harry, but despite the assurance Harry still jumped when the young man touched his shoulder. Severus watched closely while the healer examined Harry confidently but the small boy remained frightened and jumpy. After recording his findings he turned to Severus.
“Would you mind if I checked you and the dog for anything that makes could make him sick. Just to make sure he is not infected again while his system is so weakened.” Severus nodded though uncomfortable at having someone cast a spell on him. He felt the tingling sensation as the spell swept over him. Jacob shook as if wet when the spell washed over him.
“Is this something we should do at him as well?” Severus asked, wondering if it could have prevented Harry from getting sick.
“It may be advisable for the first period but I am not his main healer. You should discuss this with him.” The young man advised. “Perhaps even training his immune system by starting with more benign germs and slowly letting more virulent strains access to him so his sysemt can grow used to fighting off them on his own.”
Severus smiled at the young man for advising him and explaining this to him. Like everything with Harry he would have to start slow and build up to a normal system.
Accepting the tray with breakfast, frowning at the yogurt and Jell-O on the tray.
“Hello Harry. You look better.” Severus said smiling. Pulling a chair besides Harry's bed, waiting for the boy to adjust to his presence.
“I brought Jacob to see you. He was very worried.” Severus said, seeing the large animal put his from paws up on the bed and nuzzling Harry’s arm whining softly. The boy slowly reached out to stroke the silky ears.
“Would you like some breakfast?” Severus asked, as Harry slowly seemed to melt against the dog and slowly the tension flowed out of him. Finally Harry nodded a little and Severus nudged the bowl of yoghurt against his hand. Harry dipped his fingers in, rubbing them together experimentally before slowly bringing his dripping hand to his mouth to suck the yoghurt off. Eagerly Harry dipped his hand back in and sucked it clean.
“It’s called yoghurt. Do you like it?” Severus asked, seeing the contents of the bowl rapidly disappearing. With his fingers in his mouth Harry nodded. Severus waited for Harry to finish.
“Next is Jelly-o, Why don’t you try using a spoon to eat it. It will make it a lot easier.” Severus suggested, nudging the spoon against Harry so he could explore what he was handed. Until Harry finally awkwardly held the spoon. Guiding his hand Severus helped harry take the first bites before slowly letting go of Harry’s hand allowing the boy to take his first messy bites on his own. Severus quickly spelled harry clean when the bowl was empty and the boy cuddled back into his blankets.
“I also brought your reading books so you have something to do and your stuffed stag.” Severus said, placing the objects near Harry. He had hated the stag toy when he had first seen Harry with it but Narcissa said Harry had instantly taken to it. It made him wonder how much Harry knew about his parents. The Drusley’s just did not seem like they would tell him about them but it made him question what he knew about childhood memories. Severus watched Harry grab the stag and pull it in a tight hug before searching his bed for one of the story books. Severus smiled when Harry managed to get the first book backwards and the story started at the end.
Harry frowned, holding his head to the side before slowly closing the book, turning it over and opening the book at the start. Severus proudly looked at the boy, everything he had seen harry do made him convinced that the small boy was very smart, despite his hard start in life.
“Good morning,” A loud heavy set wizard in master-healer robes said, startling Harry into dropping his book and withdrawing a little to the corner. Severus send a glaring look at the man, picking up the book to give back to Harry. The man looked a little sheepishly and grabbed Harry’s chart before withdrawing back towards the door. “I was told our little guest had a visitor.” The man said quieter, watching Severus give Jacob a boost so the large dog was completely on the bed. “I see you brought a pet. A special guide dog even.” The man said, keeping his distance and regarding the situation. When Harry relaxed a little the man waved at Severus to join him outside the room.
“I am glad to see you managed to relax him a little. He has been rather tense the last few hours.” The told Severus watching the chart. “We were concerned by the condition Harry is in. We understand you have recently taken custody?” The man said.
“Yes, 5 days ago. After I found him wandering Kings Cross with a Howarts ticket and the headmaster suggested the Janaus Thickery ward.” Severus said defensively. He knew it was a possibility that people questioned his authority over Harry.
“Good, our scans show an improvement over the last days and I just saw how much trust you have built with him.” The man said, glancing into the room to see Harry with the dog listening to a story. “I want to suggest for you to take him home. A healer will visit five times a day for the next 2 days and as needed after that.”
Severus looked at the man startled. Yesterday they had said Harry would have to stay at the hospital for two days.
“We have not done any warding yet and I thought a mind healer would come by?” Severus said.
“What he needs most of all is feel comfortable. Someone can come by tomorrow to do an intake in a place he feels at ease in.” The healer suggested. “Stress is affecting him too much so bringing him to a stress free environment is essential to his healing.”
Severus knew that last part from his own research and seeing what Harry was like when he arrived was not good for the boy.
“Allright.” Severu said, together they went back inside.
“Harry would you like to come home with me.” Harry shifted towards Severus and nodded.
“Good, let’s pack up your things and get you home.” Severus said, smiling when Harry patted the bed to find his things holding them out to Severus to put back into his bag. As soon as the healer lowered the wards confining him to the bed Harry jumped off followed closly by Jacob and automatically grabbing the hounds collar made off towards the hallway.
Severus looked at the healer surprised , unaware wards had been keeping Harry on his bed.
“We could not manage to keep him on the bed without sedations. He either hid in the corner or tried to get out of the room.” The man said apologetically.
“But confining him increases his fear.” Severus growled.
“Which is exactly why I want him home. We do not have the experience or place to deal with abused children. A closed mental ward is out for the question but we only rarely receive abuse cases and have no experience with their care. The other option is outsourcing to a muggle care facility but that would be disastrous and only chosen in cases we have no other option. Take him home, Sir. Care for him like you have now and we will be by to see how he is doing.” He said, the adults following the small boy and dog out. Severus subtly telling harry where to go.
At the floo they said goodbye.
“Harry, be careful of the stairs next time.” The healer said, smiling at the boy who trustingly let Severus wrap his arm around him and after calling out the address step into the flames.
Lucius was surprised when Severus stepped though with Harry pasted to his side.
“Welcome home Harry, We did not expect you yet.” He said, trying to read his lovers eyes.
“Let’s get you set up in the solarium Harry. You still need to take it easy for the next couple of days.” Severus told the young boy plastered to his side. Harry ended up on the couch with his stuffed stag snuggled up against him and his books, a self-filling cup of juice and a plate of healthy snacks close by. Jacob had wandered off outside.
“Do you remember where the bathroom is?” Severus asked, waiting for Harry to nod. “I am going to help Lucius and Narcissa. Just stay here and rest, Okay?” Severus again waited for harry to give a positive response before leaving the boy.
From the doorway Severus watched him for a little bit. Harry looked calmer and more relaxed than he had at the hospital but watching him Severus saw Harry get up a few times, wander the room and even wander to the hallway to the bathroom. Almost like Harry was testing if he was confined in any way.
Seeing the koi pond in the solarium Severus quickly cast a safety charm that would prevent Harry from tripping in. surveying the room he saw nothing else that could be threating.
Finally he ordered a house elf to watch Severus at all times when he saw Harry nodding off. He asked where Lucius was and headed off to find his lover. Walking though the hallways he could feel very subtle differences in the magic around him, very slight barriers around sharp points on the furniture and at the bottom of the staris he felt a strange ribbling under his feet just before the stairs started.
“It is a muggle way to warn blind peole they are at the stairs.” Lucuis said, watching him from the top of the marble staircase. “We also added them at the top of the stairs and have cast the same anti falling ward we used for Draco. We were just discussing his room. The books have some suggestion but we need to consider how to incorporate it with magical values.” Lucius said, hugging Severus gently. Severus kissed him deeply, puling the taller man against him.
“Thank you for everything.” The dark haired potions master whispered in his ear.
“No problem love. Lets get hime used to us, healty and ready for the world.” Lucius said, gently pulling Sevrus along to harrys bedroom. Narcissa was skimming another book.
“Did he get settled, why is he home already.” She asked worried.
“He was too stressed out at the hospital to heal so they wanted him in a more familiar environment and will visit to check up on him. He is in the solarium but he seemed really frightened of being confined again. He seemed to nod of and the elves are watching him. What about his room?” Severus said, looking around the spacious bedroom harry had been using until now.
“The book says a well-organized, uncluttered space with assigned spaces for everything he owns is essential.” Narcissa read from her notes.
“I noticed Harry likes to cuddle in a corner when he sleeps, so perhaps put the bed in the corner and the cabinet against the foot end to make a sort of little fortress where he can feel safe.” Severus said, watching as Lucius chanced the furniture like suggested.
“Perhaps the desk infront of the window so he can work with them open and feel a nice breeze.” Narcissa said.
“And put the couches in the corner with the table between them so wh won't trip over them.” Severus added, smiling at seeing the furniture dance without Lucius direction meaning the houselves were helping out.
“We also need a bookcakse and perhaps an other cabinet for him to keep odds and ends organized.” Lucius said, I will check out the stored furniture and have some borught up.” Lucius decided, watching the changed room. Colour and lighting were the only things they had not changed since they did not matter much to Harry.
“The healer adviced us to check for more dangerous germs around Harry for the next while to make sure he does not get sick again. I need to research spells that could help. I also want to start serchign for spells that could help him read his books, perhaps even making them appear in braille. If they don’t exsist I need to design them.” Severus said, looking at the room once more.
“I need to head to the ministry to get updates and I don’t know how the hospital visit affected our case. After that I want to go to Gringots to see if the Potter heritage has been treated well.' Lucius said.
'I found Draco's copy of the stories of Beedle the bard and though I could read them to Harry so he gets a little more used to being with people.' Narcissa said. Silently wondering if she could figure out how to start Harry's education on its way.
