Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter
A/N: Okay this chapter was really tricky. But first i want to ask a few questions. Purely canon wise. What made Dumbledore ask for the stone in the first place? How did he know Professor Quirrell would break into Gringotts? and thirdly. How did Voldemort know that Dumbledore was in possession of the stone? These question and many more like it are not answered by J K Rowling. So i have been left to come up with some of my own ideas. I hope they are believable enough.
Head Master Office Christmas Break
Albus Dumbledore sat behind his desk worried. They were nearly half-way through the year, and Harry and Rose hadn't even made a single attempt to find out what he was hiding. Albus had been alerted earlier in the year that someone had entered the out of bound room. The wards he had placed around the room allowed him to identify the exact magical signature of the witch or wizard who had tried to enter the room. He had been most surprised to find out that it had been Harry's magical signature, the reason he was so surprised was because the boy had unlocked the room using the Alohomora charm. A charm that first years shouldn't have been learning until the end of their first year. It was this that led the headmaster to keep an extra close eye on the twins and their studies. However since that attempt the twins had ignored the room.
Albus Dumbledore remembered how the object in question came to be in his possession in the first place. His good friend Nicholas Flamel had come to him, after someone had made several attempts to break into his home. It was well documented for what his friend was famous for creating, and the properties the object could offer. Nicholas in fear of his greatest achievement being stolen, decided to ask Dumbledore to keep it safe. At first Albus had insisted that they hid the object in one of the school vaults in Gringotts. This had proved to be a good decision as all attacks on the Flamel home stopped. However the safety of the object was again called into question at the beginning of the school summer holidays.
Hogwarts was once again was in need of a professor to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts. For years the position had been cursed and it was very rare that a professor survived more than a year in the post. Albus Dumbledore had only one applicant a man called Quirinus Quirrell, however Albus had immediately noticed that something wasn't quite right about the man in front of him. Albus Dumbledore was very good at sensing witch's and wizards magical signatures. Not only could he sense the mans signature, but another signature as well. A signature that Albus Dumbledore knew all to well. The other signature belonged to an old student that Dumbledore had taught before he had become headmaster of Hogwarts, and that students name was Tom Riddle, who eventually went on to take up the name that all the wizarding world feared, Voldemort. The question was, what had drawn Voldemort to Hogwarts? There were two possible reason. One he had heard about the stone, or two he had been drawn to the forbidden forest for what laid within it.
Albus Dumbledore had known that Voldemort was not truly dead. Voldemort had used some very dark magic to create an object known as a Horcrux. These horrid things were used to store a portion of a wizard or witch's soul within it. Long as the wizard or witch had a Horcrux they were immortal. This is how Voldemort had survived that night when he attacked the Potters. Although his body was destroyed his spirit wasn't. However with no physical form, he would have to search for a host to sustain himself. Obviously Voldemort had decided to use this Quirrell as his host. However just finding a host wasn't enough he would need a substance that would allow him to carry on living, Unicorns blood. This is why Dumbledore had not only suspected Voldemort was here for the stone, but to feed on the forest population of Unicorns, for their blood could sustain anything even if it was close to death. However killing such an innocent creature had a great cost. The person who had killed the Unicorn and drunk its blood would have a curse placed upon them. Dumbledore knew Voldemort wouldn't care about any curse, long as he survived, he would do anything.
To test Voldemort Dumbledore had decided to bring the stone back to the school. He had then made it obvious to the teaching staff that the stone was being held at Hogwarts. Albus had then asked several professor to provide some sort of defence to protect the stone. However they were not allowed to disclose what they were going to provide to each other. Professor sprout had decided to use devil snare as her defence, Professor Flitwick had come up with an idea to retrieve a key from a flock of other keys. The person stealing the stone would have to have exceptional flying skills. Minerva had decided to provide a chess set, forcing the person attempting to steal the stone to play across the board before, they could gain access to the next room. Quirrell had offered to provide a troll, this is why Dumbledore knew that Quirrell was the one who had let the troll in during Halloween. Dumbledore knew that Voldemort would try steal the stone during the panic on that night. He had ordered Severus to intercept him before he could get the stone. Unfortunately the Cerberus had bitten him. Dumbledore had felt sorry for Severus, but a simple bite was more than a willing sacrifice to keep the stone safe. The final defence for the stone was a potion problem provided by Severus himself. Once all the defence were in place Dumbledore had checked each one, however if he was going to use this as a test for Harry and Rose, then a few of the defence would have to be brought down a few levels. Of course that was until he had learnt how well both twins were doing in their classes. Maybe the defences would be now too easy. However what was the point of having defences and these trials if they were not being tested. Dumbledore had to come up with another approach. He turned to look at the package now wrapped up by his desk. Maybe this would cause both twins to be more adventurous.
Gryffindor Common Room
Harry and Rose sat on one of the sofa's. Hermione had gone home for the Christmas break, along with the rest of their new friends. Harry and Rose had been invited to spend the Christmas period with the Greengrass family. According to Daphne her father wanted to thank him personally for saving her. Harry had wanted to go, however Rose had wanted them to stay here, after all it would be their first Christmas together since leaving their relatives. So in the end Harry had decided that he and Rose would spend the Christmas together at school. It was Christmas eve and the tree in the common room had already been decorated. Already the presents were placed under the tree. Harry had gotten Rose a beautiful gold locket with her initials engraved on it. Inside was a picture of both of them cuddling and smiling.
"I'm glad it just you and me this year Harry. This will be our first Christmas where we are not forced to slave around after others. I know you wanted to go to the Greengrass family for Christmas, but thank you for choosing to stay here with me."
Harry moved closer to his sister before hugging her. "We have always stuck together, and we always will. You're my sister and their is no one else on this entire planet that I would rather spend Christmas with. " Rose eyes began to water as she buried her head on to Harry's chest. Harry like always rubbed her back in soothing circles to calm her down. "Hey sis come on, there is no reason to cry."
Rose lifted her head of Harry's chest, and then wiped her eyes with her sleeve. "I'm not crying because I am upset, I am crying because I am happy. You always look out for me, and always put me first before anything. Even spending a holiday with Daphne and her family, you chose to stay here with me. I am so lucky to have a great brother." Rose then wrapped her arms around Harry's neck and kissed his cheeks.
Christmas Day
Harry went to get up, however he found his arm pinned to the bed. He turned his head to see a sleeping angel laying in his arms. Normally Rose would be gone by now, however as he was the only one from his dorm who was staying over Christmas, they had the dorm room all to themselves. It was then Harry remembered what day it was. It was Christmas. Harry gently nudged Rose awake.
"Rose wake up. Its Christmas." The word Christmas was all it needed for Rose to open her eyes. She stretched her arms out accidentally hitting Harry in the face. Seeing what she had done and her brother now holding his face, she quickly crawled out from under the quilt. "Oh Harry, I'm sorry. Are you okay?" Rose was really worried she had hurt Harry, however she was relieved to see that he was okay. Rose watched him climbed out of bed and walked towards his trunk, he then opened it and pulled out a small package which she took from his hand. She looked at Harry and watched him smile.
"Merry Christmas Rose."
Rose knelt on Harry's bed and kissed him on the cheek. She then opened the package. Her eyes widened as she opened the box to see the small gold locket. Carefully she removed it from the box and held it in her hand. There on the front engraved was 'R L P' (Rose Lillian Potter) Rose opened it up and a whole new flood of tears appeared in her eyes. She was so happy that she leapt on Harry and kissed him fully on the lips. Her eyes suddenly widened at what she had done, and she quickly pulled back.
"I'm sorry Harry, I didn't mean to do that, I was just so happy." Harry quickly sat up and looked at Rose, he could see the worry on her face. "It's okay Rose, I am not angry. I am just happy you liked your present."
Rose shook her head. "Harry I don't like it, I love it. Thank you. Wait here I will go get your present." Rose then leapt off the bed and run out of the boys dorms, towards the girls dorm.
Harry waited patiently on his bed, his fingers on his lips. Rose had kissed him. His first kiss and it had been with his sister. Harry wasn't sure what he was feeling, even though the two had never had any moral up bringing, he knew kissing his sister like that was wrong. So why did it feel so right. Harry's lips were still tingling. Harry decided to think on the matter later. Just then Harry noticed Rose run back into his dorm with a small box.
"Merry Christmas Harry."
Harry took the box and then opened it. Inside was a small watch. He took it out and placed it on his wrist. He noticed a separate dial which he twisted. Suddenly he found himself inside a sort of protective shield.
"I thought seeing how you had taken such an interest in defence. Then this could help if you end up in a tricky situation. The shop owner said the charm works like a basic Protego charm, however it has a time limit and it can't stop the more sinister spells, but should be able to stop any little hexes Malfoy and his group try to throw at you." Rose then found herself pulled into a huge hug.
"I love it Rose thank you." Harry then checked the time. "We better go down to breakfast. Come on."
Harry and Rose left the dorm and walked down the stairs. However a huge brown package drew their attention. Harry pulled it from under the tree and noticed it was addressed to Himself and Rose. He brought it over to one of the sofa's and began to unwrap the parcel. Harry found a small envelope inside the package and what look like some sort of black cloak. Harry read the note.
This was entrusted to me by your father. It is time it was returned back to both of you. Use it well
Harry wondered who had sent him the note however, when he turned to look at Rose she had vanished. Harry noticed the cloak was missing too. Harry suddenly saw Rose head just floating around the room. The sight had really scared him. However he noticed Rose was laughing and then she took the cloak off and stood before Harry. "How cool is this. You put it on and you vanish." She then put the cloak back on to show Harry.
Harry was rather surprised at the gift. He wondered who had sent it to them. There was no signature or name on the note. Harry decided to file the information away for later. "Come on Rose, we need to get down to breakfast. Why don't you put the cloak in your pocket."
Rose took off the cloak and then stuffed it into a school robe pocket. The twins then left for the great hall. Once they got there, they could only see a handful of students. They also noticed that the four tables were missing, and there was only one long one in the centre of the great hall. Rose and Harry sat down and began to fill their plates. Once they had finished their breakfast they decided to go back to the common room. However on their way back to the common room, they came across both the headmaster and Professor Snape discussing something. Harry quickly pulled Rose into one of the alcoves. He then whispered.
"Rose give me the cloak, and hold onto me." Rose pulled the cloak from her pocket. Harry then placed it over both himself and Rose. They both listened to what the headmaster was saying. Harry had been mighty suspicious of their potion Professor, ever since Halloween night. He had seen the bite on the Professor's leg and guessed that the three headed dog had been responsible. The question was. What was in that room that the Professor would risk his life for?
"Severus it is very likely that someone will make an attempt on the stone during the Christmas holidays. The thief almost succeeded on Halloween. I must say I am sorry for what happened to your leg but I needed someone to protect the stone." Dumbledore smiled as he sensed both Harry and Rose, hidden under the cloak he had sent them.
Severus hated being the headmaster puppet, he still had no clue what the headmaster wanted to achieve. Why did he see it necessary to test both Harry and Rose? More importantly if he knew who was trying to steal the stone, then why didn't he just fire the useless prat. The guy couldn't even say one word without stuttering. Severus had been after the defence job for years. Yet the headmaster wouldn't give him the opportunity to teach the subject. Now the person who was teaching the subject was trying to steal the object that was hidden here. None of this made any sense what so ever, and now the old fool wanted to involve these two children. Severus growled as he played along with this charade.
"What happened to my leg Albus, is nothing. As long as the stone was protected that is all that matters, however I am still curious why we are hiding it in the school in the first place. Wouldn't it be safer with Mr Flamel?"
Mean while Harry and Rose, were looking at each other confused. "What stone, and who this Flamel guy?"
Rose shook her head, she had no clue either. But what was clear now was the three headed dog was guarding the object. The question Rose wanted to know was why two Professor would be discussing this in a corridor, where any student could walk past and hear what they were saying. If this stone was a meant to be secret then they were not doing a good job of keeping it.
Albus grinned, everything was going to plan. "You know why Nicholas entrusted me with the stone. His home was attacked over the summer. He was convinced that someone was trying to steal it. He knew there were no stronger wards then Hogwarts so he asked me to look after it for him. So we must do everything we can to protect it. So not only will it be protected by the defences already in place, but I to will add my own defence. All I ask is you keep a close eye out for anyone you suspect who would want to steal the stone."
Mean while under the cloak Harry was now very confused. With what he could understand from the headmaster was Professor Snape was protecting the stone. Which meant when he had been bitten then he was trying to stop someone else, the question was who? Plus, what was so important about this stone, and who was Nicholas Flamel. These were questions Harry was going to find answers to. Harry was so wrapped up in what he had heard that he failed to notice that the headmaster and Professor Snape had already parted ways. Seeing the coast was clear Harry pulled off the cloak, and then stuffed it into his own pocket.
"Well we know what the three headed dog was guarding now. I wonder what is so important about this stone? Maybe we should look into it."
Rose knew what her brother was like. Anything that sounded like a mystery he was right into it. "Harry why don't we just ignore what we just heard. Whatever this stone is, the Professor have it guarded, so why should we get involved. Lets just complete our first year, without anymore incidents. I almost lost you when you faced that troll. I won't allow you to go chasing after some stone being guarded by a three headed dog."
Harry sighed and lowered his head. Rose was right. "Okay lets ignore it then. So shall we go back to the common room?"
The twins then took hold of each others hand and walked towards the grand staircase. Meanwhile hidden under a delusion charm the headmaster frowned. Obviously he would have to try a more hands on approach.
A/N: this chapter was a pain. I had to come up with a way for Harry to find out about the stone. Has I have not involved Hagrid in this story, I thought this could be the most logical way for both Harry and Rose to find out.
