At around five thirty I decided to pack it in, I felt sweaty and gross from all the work and the room had become uncomfortably humid. I briefly wondered where Crookshanks had gone, hoping he hadn't gotten lost somewhere though I was pretty sure he was just out causing a poor mouse some trouble. When I got to my room I chose to change back into something more comfortable. The corset had slackened somewhat during the day and I wondered if maybe it was just my body heat warming the plastic, or if maybe I was getting used to it already. After I changed I felt the need to wash my face and I started to wonder what the rest of the rooms might be. I remembered where the bathroom was, but before entering to wash I decided to wander right past it. The door right next to it was a small linen cupboard, it had towels and sheets, blankets and some other fabrics. Across from the cupboard was as I remembered, the kitchen, followed by the living room and door to the potions classroom.
When I turned I noticed a small hallway that I had totally managed to overlook every single time I passed. I slowly made my way down. To the left was a closed door, I pushed it open and peeked in. Inside was a spotless potions lab, cosy and clean. The whole length of every wall were storage units from floor to ceiling, some shelves held an array of pots with all sorts of different ingredients inside. I desperately wanted to explore but the room was so clean, Snape would surely know I was in there so I backed out of the room and closed the door once more. At the very end of the walkway was a door that was slightly open, I edged my way towards it, not really knowing what to expect. When I reached it I cautiously pushed it open and peeked inside.
“Ah! I'm sorry!” I squeaked and bolted backwards away from the door. I hadn't expected Snape to be in there, shirtless.
“I was just... Uh... I was...” I rambled through the slit in the door. From what I could tell it was a very sleek bedroom, the bed covers were black silk and neatly made. Severus was in the middle of pulling on a shirt when I intruded, though he noticed me the moment I saw him.
“What business is it of yours to be wondering around my premises?” He drawled, unamused. I didn't even know what to say, I was curious? I got lost?...
“Y-you told me to... You told me to learn where everything was!” I defended. Feeling momentarily like a genius. The door opened and I automatically stepped back several paces. “And I didn't know you got back...” I finished with a whisper.
“I'll make myself more clear next time. We haven't had a chance to discuss how everything works when it comes to my personal chambers so I will let you off this time. For future reference, all rooms down this passageway are off limits.” He looked carefully at me. A new softness in his expression that was absent earlier in the day. “And what I get up to in my free time is none of your business, these are my quarters and I'm at liberty to come and go as I please.” He nodded curtly before pushing past me, the door he'd emerged from automatically closing in his wake. As he passed I couldn't help noticing he smelled very... Musky. A thick, rich scent that I'd never noticed on him before, if I were to label it I'd have said he smelled almost like sex.
“Sorry.” I uttered again, slowly following him out of the hallway. I checked my watch, it was almost seven. I scurried to the bathroom, when I positioned myself in front of the sink to refresh my face I noticed in the mirror a large smear of ink down from my left temple to my chin.
“What the-?” When I scratched it, tiny little flakes fluttered into the basin. I wondered where it could have come from, then I remembered when Snape had tightened my corset. I'd fallen onto his desk and tipped a vial of ink over. Oh great... I rolled my eyes after blushing at the memory. Couldn't believe I'd been wondering around the class all day like that, though luckily I'd been alone. Snape had seen me but I started to care so little at how he saw me now.
I washed my face and tidied my hair before nipping into my room and grabbing a jumper. While rushing across his living space I tried to pull the garment on and the mix of motions caused me to fall right over, scratch that, I didn't fall, I positively vaulted towards the exit and banged my head against the door.
“Urgh!” I curled up into a little ball on the floor, clutching my head. “My braiiiin.” I groaned. After the ringing in my ears stopped I noticed I heard a chuckle. Looking over I found Snape looking down at me, a full and amused grin spread across his face. I stared for a second or two, it was beautiful, a sight never seen by me or probably anyone else. I couldn't help smiling back. His faded a little but didn't go. He extended his hand and I took it.
“Perhaps dressing standing still might be more suited for someone such as yourself.” He mused. He actually radiated ease, which was a total contrast to earlier. I could hardly believe it but I wasn't about to knock it any time soon, after all it might be the last time I ever see him this way. Once I got on my feet and brushed myself off, I turned to look back at him to find he was easing himself into my personal space. He tucked his fingers gently under my chin and moved my head to the side. “Seems your not injured.”
“Can't say the same for my pride.” I smiled a little as he withdrew. Not used to the intimate contact. His smile was small but he still bore it as he nodded and turned to leave the room. I was still smiling in disbelief when I noticed the clock on the mantle had passed seven by about three minutes. I was already late in meeting McGonagall.
**“I'm sorry I'm late Professor.” I panted as I entered the large office. After closing the door I turned and found that we weren't alone, two more people were sat in front of her desk.“It's Minerva!” She called and beckoned me to a chair in between the two other guests. As I approached I noticed the familiar blonde hair of a certain young Malfoy, I sat and nodded a greeting towards him. When I turned to address the other person, I faced Neville Longbottom.
“Neville? What are you doing here! It's good to see you.” I beamed and he got up, smiling wide, I instantly stood back up in time for him to embrace me.
“Hermione, I hoped I'd see you here.” He smiled into my shoulder. “How have you been?” We parted and sat down.
“I've been okay.” I said simply, not wanting to talk about myself. “What about you?” I held his hand and we sat closely, in our own little bubble. Most would have probably assumed we were lovers, but not long after the war Neville 'Came out'. I suppose he felt more like my brother now.
“Ah you know, this and that.” He started, Minerva sat at her desk.
“Neville is the Herbology apprentice.” She announced. I smiled at him excitedly. I noticed he wore a multi coloured tie with the same wording as mine. “And Draco Malfoy here will be working as an assistant for Professor Mark in defence against the dark arts class.” she waved her hand at Draco. I didn't mention that I already knew. But I smiled at Malfoy, he reciprocated with a tiny wave.
“I mostly invited you three here to welcome you to the school personally. Never before have we had three sub staff at one time, we may have to extend the table in the great hall!” She laughed, we echoed her slightly. “You are all former students so I won't have to inform you what the dinner schedule is, but-” she pushed three identical pieces of parchment towards each of us. “You might like to know of the privileges you will have now that you're staff.” She finished. We all took a scroll each. “I've spoken to both Professors Sprout and Snape to learn of your schedules, Granger and Longbottom.” McGonagall peeked over her spectacles at us. “I've managed to squeeze in some teachers duties for you. All three of you will be required to do rounds on certain nights of the week, as will the rest of us. If you are ill you must let me or another member of staff know so someone can cover for you, is that all right?” She smiled, sounding very professional.
“Yes.” We all replied in one.
“Very well then!” She stood. “Don't be afraid to come to me if you need anything and I hope all three of you settle in nicely at this school.” Smiling softly she shook our hands from across the table and we left.
After I stepped out and to the side to let the others pass, I couldn't help a peek into the scroll.
“Ah, this is going to be a busy few months.” I heard Neville mutter behind me. I turned to him.
“You're telling me, Snape already has me working my fingers to the bone and term hasn't even started yet!” I ran my fingers through my hair and let out an exhausted breath. The smile on Neville's face making me giggle a little bit. It sure was nice to see him.
“Do you wanna go grab a drink in the Great Hall?” He grabbed my hand before I even answered. As he was tugging me gently away I saw Draco stood not far from us, he was shuffling his foot and obviously felt out of place. I stopped mid stride and looked at him, then back at Neville who just nodded.
“Draco, would you like to join us?” I asked, he looked up from the floor and smiled.
“Really? I don't want to impose...” He trailed off. I shook my head and smiled a little.
“You won't be.” I urged.
“Besides, we're all going to need a good drink if we're to survive here.” Neville interjected. We all laughed.
“You're right there.” Draco said, I yanked on his sleeve to steer him closer to us. I wasn't about to spill all my darkest secrets to Malfoy, but at the start is a good place to begin. I remembered what Snape had told me about starting small. It could apply to anything, even making amends with an old rival.
**We'd all sat in the mostly deserted Great Hall, even though we were wholly allowed to sit at the staff table, we all decided to lounge around on one of the house tables.“So then he turned around and WHAM! He flew straight into the bludger. The guy still can't see straight!” Draco yelled. Me and Neville almost fell off the bench laughing. “And it was an accident I swear!”
“Oh god, stop, please stop I'm gonna puke!” I screeched. I knew I probably should have denied the alcohol when they offered, but I found myself drinking it anyway. Draco and Neville were swaying slightly and I hoped they wouldn't wake up tomorrow hungover. Perhaps they had nothing to do until term started, unlike me.
Neville came down from his laughing high, his cheeks stained with tears. “This is why I don't play Quiddich.” He breathed.
“But you ride something else, don't you Longbottom?” Draco grinned cheekily, a laugh bubbling up his throat when Neville blushed up to his ears.
“Awwwww, you're so shyyyy.” I mocked in a baby voice and pinched his cheeks. He laughed and hid his face in his arms on the table.
We drank, much, much more. Spoke and laughed, it was the happiest I'd felt in a while.
“Uuuurgh I should be getting back.” I grumbled when Draco and I both noticed the third liquor bottle was empty. “If I drink any more I'll just end up fucking someone.” I snorted. Seconds later I realised what I'd said and gasped. Draco was too busy giggling to himself to have really noticed and Neville was passed out on the table. Tomorrow I'd feel guilty for glueing glitter all over his face.
“I'm already to the point of fucking someone, I crossed that point looooong ago!” He giggled again, sounding like a girl. I laughed.
“Neville.” I jabbed him with my finger, nothing. “Neville we should go, it's like...” I checked my watch, barely being able to focus my vision long enough to see the dial. “Aw man it's two in the morning... Neville it's two in the morning!” I yelled louder, he grumbled.
“Ahh but the night is still young!” Draco sang, getting up onto the table with a sort of clumsy grace. I laughed as he tried to dance and nearly fell off onto the floor. Neville lifted his glitter covered face, I snorted loudly, the sound rivalling a pig's.
“C'mon, we'll help you back to your bed.” I stood and swayed, this would be interesting. The blind leading the blind, or drunk, I guessed.
Me and Draco both helped Neville back to his bed, which unfortunately was ages away. We spent more time falling flat on our faces than actually getting anywhere. Once he was safely passed out in his own chambers, Draco said he would walk me back to the potions class. We walked arm in arm through the castle, giggling at the odd thing and trying to prop each other up.
“Are you sure you don't want me to walk you back first?” I slurred when we reached the dungeons.
“Nah, I'm not too far from here. When I reach the stairs I'll crawl so I won't fall down, promise.” He gave me a drunk smile and braced himself to the wall. I was about to do the same when I realised the wall I'd chosen to prop myself against had turned out to be the classroom door and I fell clean through it. Amazingly I caught myself before landing on my arse.
“Careful Hermione!” He laughed, clearly not worried about my well being. After more laughing he thanked me for inviting him for the drink.
“You're welcome, it was fun!” I giggled like a child. “Now, off with you!” I shooed him out.
“Okay, okay! Later Granger.” He waved cheekily before wobbling down the corridor. He kept mumbling 'Later Granger' and laughing to himself as he left out of sight. I shook my head and somehow made my way to the door of Snape's quarters and stumbled my way through it, trying to make as little noise as possible.
“You're about as subtle as a flying brick, Miss Granger.” Came the familiar voice of my current house-mate. I leaned against the sofa and caught Severus stood in the doorway of his kitchen, it took me a little while to notice he was just in PJ bottoms, and that was it.
“Ah, I'm sorry.” I swayed. It looked like he was holding a mug. “Did you wait up for me?” I gave him a cheeky grin before gingerly making my way over to him. He stiffened when I fell against him, running my hands up his chest. He moved his mug higher, out of the way to avoid spillage. “You want to have some fun?” I grinned lazily at him, my alcohol fuelled mind couldn't even make out his facial expressions but I didn't care. “C'mon, just a little?” I kissed the juncture in the centre of his chest, he flinched and abruptly shoved me away from him, holding me at arms length. My head spun with the sudden movement, making me feel sick and dizzy.
“Again with this, Miss Granger.” He sighed and pushed me towards the bathroom in time for me to chuck up into the sink.
“Hey it's not my fault, blame... Blame Neville! He invited me!” I giggled. “No wait, don't blame him, he might shit himself looking at you.” I looked in the mirror, well, I tried. I couldn't see anything but a blur. I threw up two more times, nothing came up but liquid and it made my chest burn. Snape handed me another potion. “Wow, do you keep an endless supply of these things or what?” I laughed and almost fell backwards, he caught me.
“Just take it.” He grunted. I obliged and downed it, fighting the same urge to bring it back up like the previous times. “Sleep now.” Snape ordered and pushed me towards the door and into my new room. The potion settled my stomach but I wasn't conscious long enough to feel it clear my head.
