Chapter 7
“Are you awake, Harry?” Nagini asked after poking her head in the room once she got the door open.
“I'm up,” Harry said with a little bit of a grin as he pulled his socks on.“Good!” The huge snake said, slithering into the room then over to the settee where Harry was perched. Coiling up in front of it, she looked around and asked, “Where is Sirius?”“In the loo. Give him a couple minutes and he'll be out,” Harry told her, finishing with his socks then tugging his shirt on. “Is something going on?” He didn't think there was and she was in just to talk some more, but wanted to make sure.“Tom sent me to ask the both of you if you wanted to join him for breakfast. He's in the dining room. He told me to tell you he has some information that he wants to pass along. Besides, it would be nice to sit in the dining room rather than be cooped up in here,” she imparted, slithering over then perching on the arm of the settee by Harry now that he was dressed. “I'd like that, too. We can talk more that way,” she added. As the snake had spent hours talking with him yesterday, Harry grinned at that, figuring that was the motivating factor for her coming in and said, “Let's see what Sirius says.”“The dining room is quite nice. Better than eating in here,” Nagini encouraged, wanting to spend more time talking with Harry.“I'm sure he'll agree. We just have to ask,” Harry told her, still grinning. Looking up as Sirius came in, seeing the wary look on his face, he explained the snake's offer then waited.Mind honing in on the information bit, Sirius nodded, “We can do that. Let me get dressed then we'll meet him there.”“Oh, very good,” the snake said, enthused. “I'll go tell Tom and meet you there.” With that, she slithered out to tell Tom.Chuckling, Harry shook his head.Grabbing his clothes, Sirius began tugging them on then asked, grinning a bit himself, “Do I want to know what that was really about?”“She likes talking to me. Says it's nice to talk to someone besides Tom all the time,” Harry explained, looking around for his shoes. “I think that was the real reason she came in with the offer.”“I can understand that,” Sirius snorted. “Talking to only one person that understands what you say all the time would get old, fast. At least she's nice about it.”“She is,” Harry nodded. “Not the least bit frightening.”“That's good though,” Sirius told him, finished putting on his clothes. Once everything was straight, he said, “Let's go eat. And see what he found out. The more we know, the better we're going to manage in this fucking nightmare. Not counting on it being earth-shattering, of course, but any little bit helps.”Nodding, Harry stood then stretched, groaning. He just hoped that the two of them wouldn't get lost in the massive house and be able to actually find the dining room again.
Chuckling at his familiar, who was draped over Harry's shoulders, talking non-stop to him, Tom shook his head. Pushing his now empty plate away, relaxing back in his chair and crossing his legs, he sipped at his tea before saying, “I have some information for all of us. It's not a lot, but some.” Seeing both of them look his way, he said, “First, I was able to get my hands on some books when it comes to this mess. Let me see what's in them and trace footnotes to see what else I can find.”
“At least we might have something,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. It was his hope they would come up with just a little to give them some damned hints as to what might come of this nightmare.“As I finish them, I'll pass them along with the notes I make and see if you can pick up on something I don't or know about what's mentioned so you can give us hints where else to look. I doubt either of us have encountered what's discussed in them, but we can hope,” Tom told him, sounding casual. It wasn't a great hardship to do this, honestly. As he was quite busy with other matters, Sirius and Harry going over most of it would be a huge help so he could focus on the other areas.“We'll see what we can find,” Sirius told him, planning to do just that as he got them.Shifting topics, he said, “I've used some influence I have in the Ministry to make sure that Lucius can't do a damned thing about his son. From what I've heard thus far, he's trying to get part of the charges negated, thus reducing the time his spawn would spend in Azkaban. From what I was told, Lucius is trying to foist off responsibility onto the other two involved. We all know that can't be the case because of how complex this potion was to brew. He's wiggling the best he can, but I've made sure it won't work.” With that, he looked sadistically pleased. He wanted this to hurt, badly, and planned to ensure it did. If it meant using more influence to make the stay longer, he would.“Good,” Sirius said, actually grinning at that. Though curious as to just how much influence the evil son of a bitch had in the Ministry, something the other side really needed to know though he had no way to pass that information yet, he liked that he was making sure Malfoy couldn't do a damned thing to wiggle his son out of this. “Any clue yet why the little shite pulled this stunt? It goes well beyond the normal pranks he's pulled up to this point.”“Not yet, give me time,” Tom told him, leaning forward and clasping his hands on the table. “So far, I've gotten hints. From what I was told from a few 'in the know', it was petty revenge, something like he's pulled up to this point. That and there is a mention of 'helping the cause' because of something that failed. Either excuse just isn't good enough for me. I don't care about his motivation. He's going to pay. All there is to it. In more ways than one.” Shaking his head, he added, “My contacts tell me that Madam Bones wants the book thrown at them anyway. She's still miffed with Fudge over that prosecution of Harry for the Patronus. That's factoring in. Not to mention that she knows just how this affected Harry, and will for the rest of his life. That's enough to make it so she goes after all of them.” What he didn't add was that he heard the DMLE was going to help when it came to looking for Harry. It wouldn't do them any good, of course, but he wanted to make sure they were all protected. That was going to involve moving his base of operations for where he held Death Eater meetings. It was now time to keep on his toes because of this mess.“Why am I not surprised,” Sirius groaned, head going back, already envisioning what he wanted to do with the spoiled little brat.“Where did he even hear about this—whatever? I mean, neither one of you knew what it was,” Harry asked, looking between the two and curious about that. He hadn't heard of it, but that didn't mean anything.“My guess is crime novels,” Tom told him. “It's been in a few from what I can tell. Most don't believe in the whole compatible magic, but used it because of the reaction. If you hadn't found your match, it would have brought on depression. At least that's what the books say. Not only that, it takes you out of commission for a couple weeks while you wait for your match to show up in the dream-like state we were all in. My guess is he was going for both. I don't know for sure. When I find out, I'll pass along his reasons. It won't make sense to us, that we know, but we'll at least understand why he pulled this stunt.” Looking at the clock, Tom shook his head. He had plenty to attend to that morning and had to get going, though didn't want the two to know he would be gone. Instead, he said, “Let me get on what I have and see what I can find. I had one of the elves open an old room that was once a rec room of some sort. They cleaned it out, added some entertainment items and other things. Nagini can show you where it is after breakfast. Feel free to partake.” With that, he nodded to them then stood and swept out.Watching the arsehole go, Sirius sighed. He was sure there were plenty of bits the man wasn't telling them. Whatever it was, he wanted to know about. He wasn't sure how he could use it, but was damned certain it related to this mess. Shaking his head, he looked at his godson and grinned a little. Once more Harry was in deep conversation with the snake, grinning as he talked to her. Ruffling Harry's hair, he said, “Have her show us where the game room is. We can find something to do there, I'm sure.”Telling Nagini to lead the way, watching her slither off him and head towards the door, Harry stood, snickering, “She will. It's very nice with lots to do from what she said.”“Good. It'll help keep us from going mental,” Sirius said, standing himself. This was good. Some games or something might help him think up a solution to the many problems they now had. He wasn't sure about that, of course, but it might help solve even one of them.
Drumming his fingers on the desk, Tom looked at the parchment that he was holding, not at all pleased with this. It appeared that he had to go to the Ministry today and use some influence to tend to a few matters. He had to get on hiding the bonding certificate. That was for certain. He also needed to find someone to put a leash on Fudge. From what he was reading, the man was trying to help Lucius all he could. Though the inept fool helped him plenty without knowing it, this he couldn't allow to happen. No, he wanted the three to pay the full penalty for what they did. Which meant he had to use some influence in a few places to make sure that happened.
Sighing, he tossed the parchment on the desk, thinking it over. While at the Ministry, he would venture down to the Department of Mysteries and get with a couple people there about the bond. They might know where to point him so he could get information. Maybe they would have some themselves as they might have taken the opportunity to look into it because of what was going on. They might even have gotten a request from the DMLE to do so because help would be needed at the trials. It would only assist if that was the case as he could get almost everything he would need. Yes, he needed to stop down there.Fingers drumming faster, he was trying to think what to do. Not only did he have to sort this mess and figure out what was going on with the bond, something imperative, but deal with the normal issues as well. It wouldn't do for his followers to think that something was off. In fact, they might get curious if he didn't have a meeting to demand answers about what was going on. After all, he did that every time there looked like there was something off with Harry. That meant he had to plan for one in the next day or so. Most didn't know the kind of contacts he had that weren't Death Eaters and he wanted it kept that way.Shaking his head as he looked around his desk, he sighed then decided it was time to move his base. He had the place, of course, it just meant having the elves come in and shift everything around. That needed done. So, while he was at the Ministry, he would have them do that so it was taken care of. He hated the idea because it meant getting used to plenty and shifting other things accordingly. It was imperative so he would deal appropriately. There was also the fact that he had to get on negating any tracking or tracing spells anyone could come up with. For both places. That he needed to tend to, fast. Before Albus could pull something out.Mind on what he needed to do, he stood and summoned some elves. Setting them on moving, he let the transformation slide off then strode out, planning on going to the Ministry to get on what he needed to do.
Looking around the game room, Sirius held his pool cue and waited for Harry to take his shot. Though his godson hadn't played this game before, they were having fun. Not only was he teaching Harry the game, something he enjoyed, but they were taking their mind off the mess they were in by mucking about. That was good and what they needed.
Like the git said, he had the room filled with all kinds of bits to entertain them. The snooker table was only part of it. There were plenty of other Wizarding games as well. As Harry hadn't encountered any of them, and he adored playing with most, they would have fun. Right now, they had the Wireless going with music playing on it, while they mucked about. It was fun, too. Good.“I like this,” Harry admitted after taking his shot, though it didn't do what he wanted it to. He hadn't ever played this before, but was having a great time. “It's fun!”“It is,” Sirius said, leaning down and taking his shot, grinning as he sunk the ball. “I think we're going to end up spending a lot of time in this room,” he admitted, walking around to find his next shot. While doing that, he glanced around. “Where is Nagini? She was here not long ago.” The snake had been with them since coming into the room, seeming to enjoy talking to Harry and being around the two of them. That was fine as she wasn't acting like she would attack or anything. It was just the idea of who she was.“She said something about eating,” Harry told him, watching what Sirius was doing, hoping he could get a better idea of what he needed to do to improve. “So, I imagine she'll be gone for a while.”“Understood,” Sirius said, lining up another shot. However, he stopped when there was a break in the music for a brief news report. Standing up, looking at his godson, his eyes widened when he heard the report about Harry. Unlike most times when it came to any of the Malfoys, Draco was talked about as being the one that cause the problem. They also rattled off what was used then talked about the effects of the potion. It was odd to hear, but didn't help them any as it didn't mention anything they didn't already know from the evil arsehole. However, he was hopeful when he heard that the DMLE was working on tracing Harry. There was also speculation about where he could have gone. Just before ending the news part, they did a promo for a spot later that night to discuss the whole mess in an hour long show. When it finished and the music kicked back up, Sirius looked at Harry, who was staring at him. Quietly, he said, “I think we need to listen in to that program tonight.”“We do,” Harry agreed with a vigorous nod.“I doubt it's going to help anything with this mess, but we'll at least be caught up,” Sirius said, leaning down and taking the shot, which missed. Motioning for Harry to take his, he said, “In a way that might get us more information.”“It's something I want to hear,” Harry told him as he tried to think what to do when it came to the game.“We'll manage. Somehow.” Sirius said, thinking over how they could do this without the arsehole knowing they were.Taking his shot, and missing again, Harry asked, “Do you think they'll manage to trace me? I mean, even if they do, there's not much they can accomplish.”“I don't know,” Sirius admitted with a shake of his head. “I think the big way is gone; the Trace. From what I know, I bet that vanished when the bonding happened. We'll go outside later and have you cast something to see if it triggers you getting cited for underage magic, but I bet you won't. Even if you do, it won't help shite as the owls won't be able to get through the wards. If they can't though, that might trigger someone showing up.” With that, Sirius made a mental note to do just that. They might not be able to even see the damned place, but it could trigger something that might be able to help!Shaking his head as he thought about it, Harry told him, “It probably won't do us any good for anyone to show up. First, you said they can't get through the wards. And, second, there is the bond.”“I know,” Sirius admitted, looking at him. “I'm not sure what it would accomplish, but it might be something that can give us a little help. Let's see what happens before we get our hopes up. I'm not sure what else they might try beyond that. Even tracing you won't help much. They can't do shite to break this mess.”Sighing, Harry wasn't sure what to say to that. He would go with it. Maybe, if they could, the two of them could figure out a way to get a message out. Not that a message would help much either. It would just make it seem like they were doing something about this mess, nothing more.
“Filius is trying to come up with some kind of spell that might help us trace Harry and Sirius. Also, I have Septima looking up Arithmancy equations to help as well. She's not sure what she'll find, but might be able to come up with something,” Albus said, looking between Remus and Severus, both of whom were seated in front of his desk. Sighing, he admitted, “Even if we can manage, I'm not sure what good it'll do.”
“We could at least pass information,” Remus told him. “Well, once we find a way. That will help all of us, especially Sirius. I doubt he knows all of what he's dealing with considering where he is.”“Very true,” Albus nodded. “That we do need.”“And foreshadowing of what he knows. It can only help us.” Severus added. “I doubt the Dark Lord is telling him his plans, but Black is swift enough to pick up on plenty. What he might know can only aid our side of this nightmare.”“Yes, that we do need,” Albus admitted. Looking at Severus, he added, “And we need you to keep on your toes about what might end up being said about poor Harry and Sirius. I doubt Tom will stay quiet long when it comes to having Harry. That and see if you can find a way to slip messages to Sirius. It might not help much, but anything will do at this juncture.”“I'll see what I can manage,” Severus nodded though he wasn't hopeful that they could come up with anything.“You're our best hope, Severus,” Albus admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. With that, he was just worried what all this meant when it came to the war. There was so much that could factor in now that he couldn't plan for. He didn't think Sirius would allow himself or Harry to end up swayed by Tom's silver tongue, especially with all that had gone on when it came to him, but he knew all too well what the man was like. He could charm almost anyone if he put his mind to it. Because of what Harry meant to this war, he was sure the man would try. That frightened him. It truly did.Along with that part, he was trying to come up with a way to use this to his advantage. He wasn't sure, with that bond there, that Harry could kill Tom. If Harry couldn't do that, it meant they had to go about this mess in a different way. Even getting Tom under some form of control would help. That would take the whole mess to a stalemate that would give him the time he needed to come up with a real solution. For that to happen, though, Sirius had to know he could do it. He doubted the man did. So, he had to come up with some way of getting in contact. So, that's where he wanted to focus. Sirius getting the information he needed would be their priority.Looking between the two, Albus said, “For now, we need to do what we can to find where they all are. Once we do that, we'll come up with something we can use for contact.” Seeing them nod, Albus focused on Remus and asked, “You're cottage is fortified the best you can get it?”“It is,” Remus nodded. “We just need you to put the Fidelius on and it's perfect for meetings. I have no problem allowing that.”“I'll tend to that in the next day or so,” Albus said, pleased to finally have somewhere secure. Though it wasn't as protected as Grimmauld Place, it was good enough. That's what they needed.
Groaning, looking down, Sirius shook his head. Yeah, that was a worthless waste of time. Just like everything else they had come up with. He, Harry and the great evil arse had just listened to the Wireless program about the mess. And they all got nothing out of it. Most of it was garbage they all knew, such as about charges. The rest was nothing but gossip and speculation about what went on. Rita Skeeter herself had been on being a simpering fool and moaning about how poor Harry had led such a tragic life then was forced into this. Complete and utter crap. It was just another failure as far as he could tell when it came to finding something to help.
Earlier he had tried the bit with the Trace. As expected, nothing happened. Which told him that the Trace was gone. And he was drawing a blank as to what else he could do to help. There was absolutely nothing coming to mind. Groaning, he leaned back and put a hand on Harry's head. His godson was just staring at the floor, elbows on his knees, head down. He sure didn't look happy about this. That would be expected. Looking at the evil git, who was sitting in a comfortable chair, legs crossed, he said, “That was just crap passing as news.”“Oh yes,” Tom admitted with a nod. “Nothing at all useful. I have more information than they imparted.” Figuring this was the time to toss it out there, he pulled out the official Ministry bonding paper and passed it over to Sirius. “Before you say it, I have it hidden. It won't come out until I want it to.” Seeing Sirius start to say something, he added, “We're both wanted men, Sirius. If it gets out there, the hell that will come won't be good. I don't have the Dementors under control yet. They're helping, yes, but not fully there. If the Ministry played it right, they could use them. Which could mean that both of us are in extreme danger. There isn't a ward out there that can keep Dementors out. I've done the best I could, but they may be able to get through. We can't chance that.”“I didn't think of that,” Sirius groaned and stroked his goatee. “Yeah, it doesn't need out there.” Stroking Harry's head, not liking how quiet he was, Sirius sighed. “You come up with anything on this bond?”“I have several books on it, though I haven't started looking through them yet. There is also a couple people I put on to seeing what they can do,” Tom explained, shifting slightly in his chair. With that, he decided to poke Severus to find out what the old goat had. Albus had a way of coming up with information he couldn't on some areas. “I'll start looking tonight to see what I can find.”“Yeah, because we have jack and shite,” Sirius groaned, shaking his head. Mind all over, he didn't know what to do other than it confirming that he and Harry were well and truly fucked when it came to this nightmare. There had to be a way around this and some wiggle room. That just meant he had to find it. Nothing more. To do that, he had to think. And get information. He would do that. All he had to do was figure out how.
Elbows on his desk, hands over his mouth, Tom stared down at the open book on his desk. Shutting his eyes, he groaned. As it was late, he was tired and not up to his normal level of efficiency. Because of that, he hoped what he just read was wrong.
Rubbing his gritty eyes, he then opened them and looked down at the book. Rereading the passage again, he felt his gut clench. This was about as bad as it could get. He had actually found more information they all needed when it came to this mess, but what he just read was a nightmare for him.Picking it up, he read it again, though he knew it wouldn't change what was there, and took it in. This was a tidbit that he wasn't about to let Sirius find out. There was no chance he would allow him to know that he was the dominant partner in this threesome. Because he was Harry's true match and the young wizard was the most vulnerable of the three of them, Sirius was the one that would take on the dominant role when it came to matters that dealt with Harry. As this whole mess tied all of them together, it meant that he could call the shots about almost everything. That was a nightmare. One that was bigger than anything else so far.Shaking his head, he skimmed the rest of what was there then stuck the book in his desk, locking the drawer it was in. With a heavy sigh, he picked up the next tome and went to work. It was his hope there wasn't any more in here that would make a bad situation any worse. That and he had to find a way to keep Sirius on a leash of some kind. If it went on how it had been, Sirius would eventually figure it out. That he couldn't allow.Looking at the open book, he wasn't really seeing it. Instead, his mind was circling the issue of keeping Sirius in dark about the real power he had in this relationship. The man was already plenty unhappy about what was going on. That was obvious and a feeling shared by all of them that were affected. However, as he thought it over, he was getting flashes of Harry and Sirius together. As that happened, a plan began to form. To get Sirius to calm down, the key would be Harry.Sirius, as he well knew, was protective of those he was close to. And Harry was no exception. In fact, he was probably more protective of Harry than anyone else. That was the key. If he could work on Harry and do what was 'right' by him or take care of him in a way that no one had before, it might calm Sirius down, thus holding off him figuring out what he could do.Deciding that was the way to go, he was galvanized to figure out a way to go about it. That was the question, though, as he hadn't done anything like this before in his life. He would manage, though, just like he always did. It would just take work, nothing more.
