Chapter 7
“Black!” Severus shouted, just about jumping out of his robes after Sirius' cold hand somehow drifted up his bare inner thigh without him knowing the man had managed to get his hand under his robes. “Is it possible for you to not act childish?” With a huff, he then pinched the bridge of his nose, eyes shut, ignoring Sirius' chuckling.
“Of course it is,” Sirius told him, shoulders shaking as he grinned. “I just prefer having fun is all. And, shit, I didn't expect to get that far, Snape. I assumed you would have felt the draft before I touched. Which means you're relaxing. Good!”Eyebrow arched, Severus looked at Sirius then gave an exasperated sigh. Though he was pleased about the 'relaxing' observation. It was true. Despite all they had to worry about and tend to, he was far more relaxed than he had been in years. Hearing Harry chuckle, he looked at the youngest of them, seeing a grin there, then huffed, “Mr. Potter, you're letting him encourage you with his deranged behavior. Don't allow yourself to end up drawn in. I keep telling you this.”“Yeah, well, you are too, Severus,” Harry snickered, shoulders shaking. Before Severus could say anything, he added, “Us even pondering a plan to get out wasn't something you would have done a year ago. That was all Sirius encouraging you. We won't mention some of the other bits you've done since the two of you hooked up.”“He has a point,” Sirius grinned, nudging Severus. “I'm contagious. What can I say?”“I refuse to comment,” Severus deadpanned, but smirked as he did. After all, Harry was right and he wasn't about to argue the merits as he would lose. With a shake of his head, he reverted back to the original conversation, planning to press on so Sirius didn't come up with any more, and worse, deranged schemes. “Now, what we're going to do is stay together for this foray. None of us, including Eddie, knows what kind of pests might be outside. So, Harry, you stick to us like there is a charm on you. If it comes down to us having to tend to something nasty, go with Eddie. He'll take you back a ways and keep watch. If it's something horrific that's overly dangerous, he's going to take you to where Buckbeak is housed. Stay there until we come and get you.”“We want you with us so we can teach you to tend to some of the pests, but if it's one we'll have problems with, it's better you stay safe,” Sirius explained, giving Harry a rub on the head.“I understand why, don't worry,” Harry assured him, pulling out the map they made. Eddie had pointed them to a most basic of one for the grounds, something they made a copy of. As they went along and worked their way through areas, the map would update so they could come back later knowing just what was where. He also had a clipboard where they were going to write down what not only needed worked on, but where low level pests were or dangerous areas that needed tending to right off for various reasons.“Just make sure you keep the map and clipboard out at all times,” Severus told him. “We'll get everything down we can then see if we can get one of the elves on the outside to at least clear a couple areas that will allow us to get out and enjoy the weather.”“As long as we get the pest control done, they can pretty much handle everything else. I want something cleared so we can enjoy the outside before the weather changes and to keep us from going completely mental being stuck in this house. Had enough of that shit with Grimmauld Place,” Sirius told them, looking over the map as Harry held it.“I say we start by heading towards the garage area. It's partially clean as the pavement for the drive is close. Then we press on from there after checking the garage. I want to see if we can get part of it done so Hedwig can get out and hunt. We don't want to force her to stay inside if we don't have to.” Severus told Harry, resting his hand on the back of his head and rubbing it.“We'll see if Eddie knows if there's an owlery around,” Sirius added. “If we put it close to the garage, she should be fine outside. After all, she was at Hogwarts all these years and knows what to avoid until we can make damned sure it’s completely safe.”Severus nodded at what Sirius said then leaned in closer to Harry, running a finger over the map, trying to devise the best route to take when it came to their walk around.
A smile on her face as she watched 'her boys' plan out what they wanted to take care of, Red gave a slow nod. “They are quite good together, aren't they, Eddie?” She observed as they went over everything, ensuring that they not only stayed safe on a 'mission' that might end up dangerous, but that the most vulnerable of them was protected. “It's quite an odd relationship, but it works.”
“Oh, they are,” Eddie told her with a chuckle. “They seem quite happy together from all I've observed.”“Have you managed to get a clarification of just what the relationship is yet? We know the leaning, of course, but they've not said,” Red asked. Then she added, “Not that it matters if they're happy, it just gives us an idea of what we're dealing with. Perhaps getting Harry's age as well. We know he's younger by quite a lot, but just not how much.”“No, not yet,” Eddie admitted with a shake of his head. “Harry is the kind that is rather tight-lipped about some areas. I've managed to garner some information, but not a lot. I think I'll have to ask Severus or Sirius to get what we want. Well, after I reassure them it's not for nefarious purposes, that is.”“Please do,” Red nodded. “I'll work on the others in the house. The one has been watching closely and I'm sure she'll reveal herself soon. The others are wary still. Let me do what I can with them.”“Just assure them that the three aren't the type that will cause problems. With what I know so far, they're hiding for a good reason and probably need protection. That's our job,” Eddie said. After seeing they were getting ready to take on the grounds, Eddie straightened up then told her, “Let me join them. I'll leave you to talk to the others.” After that, he floated in the direction of the three, planning to keep his word and watch over young Harry. As she watched them depart the house, Red smiled and nodded. Yes, she did like the three and planned to hurry along what she could with the others.
“I say we send an elf off to the Magical Farm Store and have them pay for about half a dozen Magical sheep then let them have at it, Severus,” Sirius said, looking around the place they were in the yard, hands on his hips. “As much work as that house needs, this should free up plenty of time. Even after we get it done, the grounds are massive and it would take more than one of the elves to keep up with lawn care alone. If we get the sheep, they can do the grass, very easily as well. We just put up the standard spells to keep a place clear for them and feed them normally during the winter. Then the elves can just tend to the bushes, trees, whatever.”
At the moment, they were taking a break from the tour and cleaning. They had done the front side of the house, where the garages and driveway were, but hadn't managed to get further because of the amount of pests they had to deal with, grass to cut so they could even get through and plenty of other problems. It appeared that getting through most of the grounds would take the majority of the day, longer than they anticipated.“A sound suggestion and one we'll tend to when we're sure we have the nastiest of the pests eradicated,” Severus told him with a nod after a sip of his butterbeer. “Very good idea, Sirius.”“We need to do something,” Sirius snorted. “It's taken us forever just to get this far and cutting the grass to manage factors in heavily. If we let it keep growing, it's just going to keep right on attracting pests as they'll have somewhere to hide. The minor ones aren't a problem, of course, but we know places like this attract nasty ones. No sense in doing all this work only to leave it and have the same issues reoccur.”“Another point well taken,” Severus told him. “We'll get the pests out of here today, the big ones anyway. Buckbeak and Hedwig can tend to the small ones. Then I'll send the elves for a half a dozen sheep and let them have at it. I'm sure, with what we've seen so far, that there is an out building we can easily use for a small barn. We'll just make sure to add in the hay and whatnot they need for bedding.”“We need that anyway for Buckbeak,” Sirius added. “So, setting up an account is needed. Nothing hard, though.” Then, with a grin, he added, looking around where they were standing, “I vote we spend a bit of extra time here to get it at least mostly cleaned. This is nice, Severus. Perfect for us just coming out and relaxing.” Where they were was a patio like area, something that had a stone base with tables and such. It looked off over a portion of the grounds that had statues, a fountain and other very nice bits.“We'll do that as well,” Severus agreed with a nod, scanning around himself, liking the area. “It shouldn't take us long.” Then he made sure to look over to where Harry was. As promised, he wasn't far off with Eddie floating right by him. Good. He was safe and not exploring. Harry was quite good at listening to the two of them when it came to these areas as he had seen and encountered some of what they were dealing with, thus knowing how dangerous they were. He just had to check on him for his own peace of mind. After that, he pressed on to what he thought they had to do to make it nice enough that they could come out and relax. As the other two were discussing what needed done, Harry was over by the medium sized fountain that was there. It was running, but in spurts and not well with the water a nasty greenish brown color. After making sure he had all the notes he needed and the map was updated with where they had been so far, he tucked it and the clipboard under his arm then took a sip of his butterbeer. While it had been a busy morning, the time seemed to fly because they not only had plenty to do, but it was fun discovering some of what was out here. After a sip, he looked at the fountain then said, to no one in particular, “I wonder if it works right. It's neat and I'd like to see it working as it should.”“Oh, I would think it should work fine,” Eddie told him, floating closer and taking a good look at the sputtering fountain. “It seems like its pumping water as it should, but it's filthy and probably needs refilled. Why not give it a good Scourgify, vanish the water then refill it. Let's see if that does the trick. If it doesn't, the elves might have to take on giving the plumbing a good cleaning.”Harry decided to give that a go and see if it worked. While it was a small thing compared to all they really had to get done, he wanted to see if it functioned. It would be great to have their own working fountain. After quickly cleaning it all up to where it was a bright white marble with gold and silver trimmings, he then filled it and waited. At first there was some gurgling and clanging of pipes, but it then began to sputter, water starting to trickle out then spurt slightly. Within a couple of minutes, it was working just as it should and cascading water like any other fountain. With a big grin, Harry lowered his wand and said, “Brilliant! It looks great!”“Indeed,” Eddie agreed, floating closer to take a look. “Just a good cleaning was all it needed, it appears.”Still grinning, Harry looked around. He could see plenty of statues around, but most were covered with all kinds of growth, so you couldn't identify any of them or who they might be. “Eddie, do you know who all the statues are of or are they just the generic kind that Muggles use, like recreations of famous ones?”“Oh, these aren't the Muggle sort, Harry,” Eddie assured him, though he didn't move any closer to the nearest one. The gents hadn't cleaned them off yet, so there might be unsafe creatures lurking in the plant life that surrounded them. “They are of famous members of our society and are all original creations. Our kind tends not to do the whole mass produced statues. Each one might be a replica of a famous person, but they are all unique. Once they're cleaned of the plants and whatever else then given a good Scourgify, they'll be as beautiful as the fountain. And they move much like our paintings and can interact with you. I'm sure all of you will like that.”“Oh, that'll be brilliant as well,” Harry grinned, gazing around, wondering if he would recognize any of them once they were cleaned up. As he did, he also looked around the area and sighed before observing, “It's going to be nice sitting out here at night or during the day once it's safe. We've not been able to do that together before. Mostly we were stuck inside over the last few summers. Then I had school and Severus had to teach while Sirius was stuck in that bloody awful house.”The tidbit of information Harry just gave up was intriguing. Eddie wouldn't question him, though, as he doubted he would get much out of Harry. What he did was file it away for when he talked to the other two. Maybe he could get more from them about the topics. “It's oh so very nice, I assure you. All year round. The spells on the bricks and stones will need refreshed, but it keeps them clean of even snow and debris. There is a wonderful fire pit in the middle that you haven't managed to get cleaned off yet. One of the residents about a century ago had it built in. I was dubious when they did it, but it's an amazing addition. It allows you to light a fire and sit around it, something similar to a bonfire. For chilly fall evenings, it's a wonderful way to spend time and keeps you ever so warm.”
“Perfect,” Harry told him with a vigorous nod. “We'll use it, that's for sure! I like the idea.” The thought of sitting outside on a chilly evening as the leaves were falling, sipping hot chocolate with a fire blazing was something he adored. Once more he scanned around then told Eddie, “This place is amazing and I love it. Yeah, it's going to take plenty of work to get it looking good again, but when we do, it'll be brilliant. I adore it here already, despite the problems. We'll all love it, I think. Plenty to do, wonderful house that doesn't hold the memories of the places we've all lived, we have lots of room, everything we could want.”“Each occupant of Sanctuary Manor has added their own personalities to the home in some way or another, making it their own. Those additions have let it become more beautiful. I imagine the three of you will do the same, Harry,” Eddie told him with a huge smile. Again, the house loved what was just said. After all, it wasn't many that could see through the years of neglect and disrepair to what it could become. Harry was able to envision it. As could the other two, from what they talked about. Yes, the house loved the three already. He was sure that it was about to help them in their endeavors to fix the old lady up in many ways.A glance in Sirius and Severus' direction showed them motioning for Harry to join them, so he headed that way. Floating along behind, Eddie was smiling. Oh, this was wonderful!
Being cautious, Severus stepped into the library and glanced around. They had the pests cleaned out, or so they thought, but the whole house was still dangerous in many ways. So, one needed to stay on their toes. When he saw nothing, he stepped further in, making sure he had tight hold of his wand.
This wasn't going to end up a full cleaning, as he wasn't about to take on such a massive job alone, but more him scoping out the basics so they knew where to start. They had finally finished the tour outside not long ago, so Sirius and Harry were downstairs relaxing after they all had eaten dinner. His thought was, once they all rested, they would come up and get the basics done until it was almost bedtime. Then, come tomorrow, finish it up, if they could manage. As he kept a wary eye out, Severus walked along the stacks of books, mentally noting what they needed to take on first to ensure it was safe and that the damage was repaired. He also double checked to make sure there were no pests. While he meandered along, he took notice of some titles here and there. From what he could see, there were books scattered among the more standard ones that were dangerous. One of the top priorities would be to move them to one section so they knew to stay alert as they might be harmful. No, they didn't want to pull something out only to get a nasty surprise. While wandering through the stacks, Severus gave a small smile. There were titles here that were not only ancient, but rare and he wanted to read them. Some were instructional, but others historical or fiction. Yes, he would spend time, when they finally managed to get the worst tended to, reading many of these. After making it to the back of the room where the windows were, he conjured a quill and parchment then made notes on what he found. While there was plenty here that needed taken care of, it was more of the cleanup and repair bit than other rooms. He didn't think it would take much to get it ready, other than the elves replacing furnishings, redecorating and the like. Yes, like so much else in the house, once it was cleaned up, decorated and rearranged, it would look magnificent. As he was perusing the list, making sure he had everything written down, he about jumped out of his skin when someone cleared their throat. Since it was a feminine sounding noise, he stiffened. After lifting his wand, he leveled it in the direction he heard the noise then relaxed when he saw a female ghost hovering there. Her hands were clasped in front of her and she was dressed in clothes from about the same time period as Red, smiling slightly. With a nod to her, he admitted, “You startled me.”“Very sorry, that wasn't my intent,” she told him, floating closer. “You are Severus, are you not? I believe that's what Red called you when she gave me a description.”“I am,” Severus told her, slipping his wand up his sleeve then tucking the list into his pocket. “If I may—your name? You look very familiar.” She did, too, he just couldn't place from where.“You were gazing at my picture the other day in the gallery,” she told him with a smile, moving closer. “In life, I was Catherine Parr. Now—everyone just calls me the Librarian.” Gazing around the room, she told him, “This has been my domain, if you would, since I came to the house. Are you going to get it cleaned and fixed up?”And yet another Queen of England! Severus was stunned. Queen Catherine was the last of Henry the VIII's wives and known for not only publishing books, but her stance on education. Being the Librarian made perfect sense. With a respectful nod, he told her, “We are. Aside from our bedroom, we want this done first for various reasons. I'm just doing a quick check of what needs done so we can prioritize since there is so much to tend to.”A happy smile growing, the Librarian told him, “If you would, follow me and I'll point out the worst of what needs taken care of. I see you've already tended to the pests. There are some books you need to stay cautious of because they tend to attract nasty creatures.” Starting to float along, she led him to the worst areas, not sure if he had seen them or not.Highly pleased with having help, not to mention who this was, Severus asked, “If you would, once we start on the books, can you indicate which ones are dangerous so we can corral them into their own area. Our concern is getting blindsided by something or Harry stumbling across a dangerous tome and having no foundation on how to handle what could come of it.”“Oh, something I'll easily do and will be most pleased to help,” she told him with a nod and smile. “Harry is the youngest, isn't he? I think Red told me he was, that is. I want to make sure I have your names straight so I don't insult you.”“He is, yes,” Severus confirmed with a nod. “We wouldn't be affronted. It takes time to remember, as we well know.”“As we'll all be in the house together, it is best to get off on the right foot, so the correct name is important,” she smiled. With a sigh, she explained, “There are plenty of nasty books in this room. Most owners weren't interested in books. Others who were seemed like they would start to organize it as it should be, but soon gave up and moved on to other areas in the house. So, what's here is in a haphazard system that doesn't make sense. It will be a big undertaking, I should warn you of that now.”“We'll manage, between the three of us,” Severus assured her. “We need the library for many areas, so it behooves us to not only do repairs and redecorate, but to make sure we can find what we need if it's required. Especially Harry.”“Oh, very good,” she said, smile still there as she began to point out the worst of the problems and damage. After pulling his list back out, Severus checked to make sure that he had what she mentioned marked. If he didn't, he wrote it down. Good. This was most helpful. As they moved along, he asked about the various categories of books. While he knew the spell to set a library to rights in minutes, he wanted an understanding of what was here so he knew how complex and time consuming it would end up. From what she said, there were no 'modern' books in the place or ones from Muggle sources, so it would be a tad easier. He also was pleased that he could add his own sizable collection to it without worrying about duplicates. Yes, this would be wonderful as he was sure plenty in here weren't tomes he had read before. For him, that would be almost heaven.
As Red watched the interaction between the two in the library, she was pleased. Severus was perfect for Catherine to meet first. Doing so would start her off on the right foot with their three boys. It would help.
After watching the two for a time, as Severus began asking about various books he was seeing, she floated off. One more had revealed themselves, a step in the right direction. Now all she had to do was work on the other two. If she gauged it right, she was sure the Mad Monk would adore Sirius, and his sense of humor, so that might be the next one. She just had to convince him was all. That was something she thought she could do.While floating along, making sure to keep an eye out, she smiled and tried to think of the best way to approach the monk then get him moving how she wanted. It was for the best that all of them get to know the boys so they could help. Wariness was warranted, of course, but she didn't think the three in the house would end up troublesome. No, they needed to help anyway, so it was necessary for it to be pushed along. She could do it easily, and would.
