Chapter 6
Since the time his kids were all in school Arthur Weasley had changed jobs. Truthfully? He missed his old one, a great deal. He had loved not only sorting out problems that came in, but dealing with Muggles and their devices. Though many wouldn't understand it, he found it highly rewarding, more than almost anything else he could do. While his current job was not only helpful, and made him more money, he longed to go back to the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. He was coping, though. On days like today, it was something he liked, though not for the normal reasons.
At this time, his official title was Head of Muggle Artifacts. It was a job that entailed not only writing laws about what was and wasn't allowed as well as regulating their use. Because of the war, there were plenty of Muggle artifacts that people wanted for protection, a huge problem. So, they had created his position to regulate their usage or deem if they were allowed. Most times it was boring as heck with it involving just reading whatever proposal and deciding. Other times it was interesting. Today was one of the interesting days. The reason for his interest wasn't so much the job, but what he could learn. Today was the day Remus and someone else, though he didn't know who, were coming in to talk to him about a matter handled by his office. As this was an official visit, it wasn't to pass information or whatever. The mere fact that Remus wanted to talk to him about business was most curious. All of them knew the man didn't have a lot of money, so starting a business himself probably wasn't in the offing. Then there was the stigma of what he was. The prejudice abounding about werewolves would derail almost everything he could do then doom any business before it started. So, knowing what this was about was part of the interest.Another part was more curiosity; who would be with Remus. As of now, most of the other wizards he had talked about it with, and his own leanings, were it had to be Sirius. He was the only one that Remus would team up with when it came to a business and had the money to start one. If it was Sirius, it could be a huge help, in many ways. Most were now sure that Sirius knew where Harry was, or had a good guess. Even if he didn't, those two alone could be a huge help in what was going on. While they were just two people, as bad as the war was going, it could make a difference. However, he had to wait and see. It didn't do any good to speculate on anything in case they were wrong or had guessed erroneously. Which meant waiting. With a heavy sigh, he began slugging through the never ending pile of paperwork that was always on his desk. The paperwork was the worst part of the job and it was mind numbing on a good day. Today would be even worse as he waited for Remus to show up.
Tucking his wand back up his sleeve, Harry breathed a sigh of relief after passing through security at the Ministry. Thankfully he no longer had the same wand he had when he went to Hogwarts and, because of the bonding, had a different last name that didn't raise eyebrows. Sirius had, of course, but that was more because he was back since everyone knew his name. Remus hadn't even raised an eyebrow. This was good.
Following the two as they knew where they were going, he asked, keeping his voice down, “What are we doing first?” The appointment with Mr. Weasley wasn't for a half an hour yet, so he assumed they were going to tend to the other bits and bobs they needed to do before then.“We're going to get your Apparation license first,” Sirius told him, putting a hand on his shoulder and guiding him along. “It should only take us five minutes to tend to the matter as they can check to make sure it's authentic with just a spell. Then we're going to register my Animagus form. Again, it's a quick bit, fifteen minutes, tops. That should give us plenty of time to finish then meet Arthur.”“Nothing hard or to worry about,” Remus assured him, putting a hand on Harry's other shoulder. As they walked along, he made sure to keep an eye out. While Harry had in one of his pairs of contacts he could change the color of and was using a brown, it was wise to make sure no one paid too much attention. After all, Sirius being around for the first time in years, since before he was cleared in fact, was enough to draw plenty of looks. The two of them together with someone so much younger might end up raising eyebrows, though Harry didn't look much like he had before he left. Yes, caution was needed.Sirius let Remus lead the way as he was more familiar with the layout of the Ministry, but was keeping a close eye out for anything that seemed off. And he was trying to keep his head down slightly so he wasn't noticed. From all Remus knew, people seemed like they were of the opinion that he might know where Harry was, at least that was the speculation, so he didn't want to draw attention to himself if he could at all help it then have some come up to them asking questions. It was coming out, they all knew it, but he wanted to put it off as long as he could.“How long should this take, do you know?” Harry asked as Remus guided them along, making sure to keep an eye out. It was better to get back in the habit now, than lapse and get caught in the middle of a mess because he didn't.“Trust me when I say we're going to do this as fast as we can,” Sirius muttered, hurrying along as fast as he could with them. “Most of it's going to depend on what we need to do with Arthur. I think we can get out of here without anyone in the Ministry knowing just who you are. It's coming, though, as I'm sure Arthur is going to Floo more than one person when we leave to let them know we're back and you're with us.”“I'm sure that this will be the last day we'll have before word gets out,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. “For now, we're safe. The Floo is locked down at home and everything has to be done by owl other than among us and Plato. We have the phones. However, I don't think we're going to end up left alone, sadly.”“Oh well, at least we know it's coming,” Harry muttered, though he didn't like the idea. After all, he had been able to do whatever he wanted for so long that it rankled to think he now had to once more watch over his shoulder.“We'll manage, don't worry,” Sirius told him as Remus lead them into the office for Harry's Apparation license. And this was the start, so it was now time to stay alert.
Arthur looked up when the secretary for his section buzzed the intercom and told him his appointment was there. Heart pounding slightly, knowing what it could mean, he stood and straightened his robes after telling her to show them in. Now he would get answers, hopefully. He just had to wait.
When the door opened, he smiled. Indeed there was Remus and, as expected, Sirius was with him. Well, that explained part of what he was wondering about as Sirius would have the money for some kind of business venture. However, there was also a third man with them, one that looked familiar, but he didn't recognize right off the bat. He supposed he would know shortly who this was.Once he did the obligatory shaking of hands and sending for the niceties, he waited for the tea and biscuits to be delivered, then the door to shut, privacy wards sliding in place, before he leaned back and smiled. “I assumed it would be Sirius with you, Remus,” he chuckled. Eyes lighting on the other man with them, his brow furrowed. He looked very familiar, but couldn't place him. “And who else is with you, if you don't mind me asking. I assume you're all involved in whatever it is you need to talk to me about.”Hand on Harry's shoulder, Sirius leaned back and crossed his legs then grinned. “Say hi, Harry.”“Hello, Mr. Weasley,” Harry chuckled, grinning at the astonished look on the man's face.“Harry? Is that really you?” Arthur asked, standing, not sure what to do or say.“It's me,” Harry told him with a bigger grin, making the contacts clear so the man could see the true color of his eyes.Rounding the desk quickly, Arthur was grinning like a fool. He then clapped Harry on the shoulder and said, “Oh Merlin! This is wonderful! We'd wondered where you were all these years.”“I was fine,” Harry told him with a smile, but that's where he left it. There was no chance in the world he was giving up what really happened. If he did, the odds of Remus and Sirius getting in loads of trouble was there. All it meant was he had to keep his mouth shut on the topic, something he could do.Almost unable to contain his excitement, knowing plenty would love to hear the news of Harry's return, Arthur then tried to focus. After taking a seat on the edge of the desk, he concentrated on the business at hand. Personal could come later. Well, it would because he planned to cajole the three into dinner at the Burrow as soon as he could manage it. Still smiling, he asked, “What is it you needed to discuss with me? I was told it was an official meeting, though not what it was about.” Then he waited, highly curious about the topic, though his mind was wandering over the ramifications of the return of the three and how it would factor into so much.Hand drifting over to rest on Harry's knee, seeing him fidget from nerves, Sirius gave it a squeeze then said, “Let's start with a question. That will give me an idea how to progress with what we want to know.”Arthur focused and nodded. “What do you want to know?” Then he stood and sat back down behind his desk. As this was his job, he would focus on the task at hand. Everything else would come later.“When it comes to Muggle devices, or what is considered as such here in the UK, what proof does it take to show they were a Wizarding invention in another country? Would something like the Magical patent from the US suffice?” Sirius asked. The answer to that question would determine how they would proceed from here and just how difficult it would end up.“If you have a copy of the official paperwork from say the US showing the Wizarding patent predates the Muggle, it's all we need. It may end up with us having to have the object reclassified, of course, which will take time, but we could easily issue a permit showing the reclassification is pending and will end up granted.” Arthur explained. “If I may,” he started, glancing between the three, seeing grins there, “what kind of device are we talking about?”“Mobile phones,” Sirius grinned, pulling his out and laying it on the desk then motioning Harry and Remus to do the same. “These are from the States, obviously, and we have the proper paperwork to be allowed to carry them.” Pulling out the file folder of parchments he had, Sirius fished in it then found the one he needed that was an official certified copy of the patent for the Wizarding version then the patent for the Muggle equivalent. Once he passed them over, he explained, “The Wizarding version predates the Muggle by almost two decades when it comes to the patent. Even now, our most basic version of the mobile is far more advanced than anything the Muggles have.” With that, he pulled out the chart he had made up and passed it over as well. The first thing Arthur did after taking the papers was authenticate them with a tap of his wand. It was standard and required, no matter who you were dealing with. When it came back as genuine, as expected, he looked them over, brow furrowed as he did. Indeed, the Wizarding version was patented first, which made it a Wizarding device, not a Muggle artifact. Once he finished reading over all of it, making sure to take in all the details, he pushed them aside then folded his hands on his desk and asked, looking between the three, “What is it you want to set up? You've given all the proof needed that we can start the process to reclassify the phones. I assume there is more to the meeting than the three of you just wanting to legally carry them without needing paperwork to prove you can.” He was actually excited by the development. Not only was he now going to be able to do real research into the phones, something he would love, but be allowed to own one. On top of those parts, they could be a boon to all of them with the war going on. Oh yes, the assist they could give would be immeasurable. Well, once they figured out how to legally get the blasted things and use them, as there was nothing in the UK set up for it. He wasn't even sure how one would set up such a project. With a huge grin, Sirius pulled out the next batch of parchments from the folder and put them on the desk. “We want the permit to set up for a business to not only sell them, but the permits to put the technology in place to run them. Our partner, Plato, has set up the networks to get this running before, so he'll take on that task. I'll take on helping, doing permits and setting up the business itself. We just need the permits from you and to start all the paperwork. We also want to work on getting our version of the Muggle landline telephones approved. Like with what you have there, we have the proof our version predates the Muggle.”Now Arthur was well and truly excited, something that easily showed. With a vigorous nod, he began pulling out the forms he needed, asking, tone distracted, “Do you already have most of the forms you need and filled out, or do we need to start that process as well? I can give you a hand with the forms if you need it, Sirius. This could be a huge help and much needed in so many areas, that I can easily get through everything you need quickly once the paperwork is filled out.”Once more dipping into the file folder, grinning bigger, Sirius pulled out everything he had filled out that would start the process and handed it over. “It's all tended to. I still have some to fill out, but it's more for starting the process once the store is ready to launch and permits we may need once we figure out just what we have to do.” Then, after a quick glance at Harry and Remus, both of whom were grinning, he pulled out the plan they had on how to set up the network for the phones. Though it would take plenty of time to walk Arthur through just what they had to have so this could launch as fast as they could manage, he was sure he would accomplish almost all of it before they left. Well, they would also be leaving Arthur with one of the phones, a basic one like Remus had, so he could not only have it for all he needed to push the paperwork through, but to play with. He was sure that Arthur would adore doing so.Very pleased Sirius was prepared and it would cut down on the paperwork he had to write up, Arthur gave a vigorous nod. A quick glance through what was there made his eyes widen at the name of the person listed as a partner. Oh, he knew just who Plato was and since he was in partners with the three here, it meant not only Galleons coming in for taxes, but ensured someone who knew what they were doing was helping. Wonderful! After snatching up his favorite quill, Arthur began going to work on what was needed, making the normal amount of copies as he did. While he worked, he had Sirius walk him through everything he needed to know and explain just how they were going to manage setting up what they needed without using available Muggle systems to manage. As long as they could do it without Muggle involvement, he wasn't going to say a word. He just needed the proof, nothing more.Quite pleased with how this was going, Sirius relaxed and answered all the questions the best he could, pulling out diagrams when needed and plans for what they had to put in place. While this meeting would last for a while, he figured that by the time they were done, as much would be in place as he could get it and the permits would be issued. Once he had those in hand, Plato could get to work. Great!
After several hours of filling out forms, paperwork, filing and getting the permits needed for Sirius to start, Arthur was standing outside the visitor's entrance to the Ministry with the three. Though they could have easily talked inside, he didn't want to risk anyone overhearing anything that might give away who Harry was. Oh, he was sure it was coming out soon, but didn't want to chance anything yet. So, he thought this for the best.
“I want to invite the three of you to dinner the day after tomorrow at the Burrow. Molly and the others will want to see Harry, of course,” he told the three with a smile.Remus figured it was better not to refuse as the bombardment was coming. Besides, they could probably pick up a plethora of information they needed and Sirius was going to need Arthur's help with plenty, so they did need to play nice. “We can attend, of course, but be aware Harry has a 'date' with his friends from the States at what would be our tea time. He'll be doing it by phone, of course, but we promised him and them, both, already.”“Oh, that's fine,” Arthur told him, a tad excited to see how Harry's phone worked. From what he was shown in his office, Harry's phone was far more complex and had more functions that than either Sirius’ or the one he now had in his possession. “I'll make sure Molly knows you're coming.” Then, extending his hand, he shook all three of theirs and reminded Sirius, “You need any help at all, send an owl and I'll be more than happy to give a hand setting up what you require.”“We'll probably take you up on that, Arthur,” Sirius grinned, knowing he would as the paperwork still needing done was plenty daunting.“Send an owl with the time and we'll attend, Arthur,” Remus told him with a smile after the handshake, putting his hand on Harry's shoulder.“I will,” Arthur assured him with a vigorous nod. “Molly and I will set it up tonight then let you know.” As he had a ton of work to do and a small mountain of paperwork to not only file, but people to meet with over what was coming, Arthur then excused himself to attend to it. He also planned to get with the proper people so they knew just who was back so they could start planning. There was much to be done now, so it was best to get started.Sirius waited until Arthur vanished inside then began getting the three of them moving in the right direction, trying to vanish into the crowds so they didn't stand out. As they began heading towards home, he muttered, “Want to bet part of what he has planned is letting half the damned world know Harry's back?”“That's rather a given, Sirius,” Remus sighed, guiding Harry along with a hand on the small of his back, making sure to keep his eyes peeled. “Let's just hope he's circumspect enough to only let certain people know and not be overheard. If only the 'right' side of this mess knows for now, we have more time to prepare. Well, at least some. It's coming.”“Nothing ever works out like that,” Harry snorted, shaking his head.“Harry's right,” Sirius agreed with a groan. “Let's hope it doesn't slip out just yet. The longer we can hold it off, the better off we're going to be.”“Right, let's get our arses home. Not only am I starved, but I need to get in contact with Plato then send him off copies of all the permits and paperwork. The faster he gets it, the faster he can start. We need that, desperately.” Then, nudging Harry, he added, “And I'm going to need your help with it. Yours is the only phone with the fax capability to send parts of it through. We'll owl him the proper copies, but he can use the others for now.”“Whatever you need,” Harry agreed then began asking just how much he had to send. It wasn't a problem, of course, he just wanted an idea since the connection to send wasn't as good here as in the States. As he listened in to the conversation, Remus couldn't help but smile. The three of them worked well as a team and always had. That ability would assist greatly in getting this venture off the ground. As he did, though, he couldn't help but worry over what was coming. The most dangerous time was approaching, something they hadn't had to deal with in a very long time. As would be expected, it had him on edge. It just meant the time to stay vigilant was at hand and keep an eye out for anything off. They could, and would, do it. After all, they had planned it out for a long time, it was just a matter of putting it into play, nothing more. Yes, they would. They would make it out of this mess and be back in California as fast as they could manage. And without being drawn into this nightmarish war if he and Sirius had any say at all about it.
