Chapter 7
Eyes opening when he heard something odd, Sirius' first glance was at the clock on the bedside table. It was one minute after midnight on Harry's birthday. When he heard the noise again, finally able to distinguish that it was a tapping on the window by a beak, he grinned. Perfect and what they needed. The owl from Gringotts came late at night, so Petunia wouldn't know it arrived.
After shifting around, he gently woke Harry. Though his godson was groggy and huffing, he was able to explain to him what was going on.Harry immediately caught on then went to open the window. Once he took the largish envelope from the regal looking eagle owl, the bird flew off and Harry shut the window quietly, eying what he was holding with a tiny grin.Sirius waited for Harry to join him on the bed again then explained, “It's everything you need from my estate from bank books to deeds and titles. It won't show up with anything when it comes to accounting for your assets tomorrow at Gringotts as it's not fully in the system yet. Just ask like you should and put this somewhere safe. When your aunt goes back to work we'll drag it out and go through what's there then I'll explain it all to you. Once you understand, we'll make a day to where we go see the house. It's something you need to handle now so that damned elf there gets on it. You might not need it for several years yet, but it's best it's ready.”With a grin and nod, Harry turned the envelope over in his hands, looking at it. His eyes lit on the seal and lingered there, fascinated by how intricate it was. “Is there anything I need to sign when it comes to this?”“Nothing,” Sirius told him, slipping an arm around his waist and holding him close. “It's paperwork that's automatically triggered if someone is raised among Muggles. If you were raised among our kind, it would have been yours since I 'died'. Nothing more. It's also something your aunt won't know anything about, no matter what. I doubt anyone else will either as wills such as this one, because I was in Azkaban, are kept quiet. It's nothing at all to worry about. You'll be the only one that knows unless someone takes it in their head to really dig. Even then it would take a lot of time and effort to find it because of the years that have passed.”“Good,” Harry said, leaning against him, still smiling. Though Sirius told him the house he inherited was nasty, he still liked the idea that he owned it and it was Sirius'. Those facts made it special to him.“We need to get some more sleep,” Sirius nudged. “We have a busy day tomorrow.”With a huge grin, remembering what was coming, Harry nodded then stood and slipped the envelope among the books he was planning to take to Hogwarts. His aunt didn't pay much attention to his horde of books, so she wouldn't look there if she came in for whatever. Which meant it was safe. Once he bought his school trunk, he would just keep it in there until he needed it.After waiting for Harry to return to bed and get comfortable, Sirius curled back up around him and held him close. When he gave him a kiss on the temple and a squeeze, he said, “Happy Birthday, Harry.”“Thanks, Sirius,” Harry told him in their normal way of communicating. Though he was tired, what was coming that morning had him wondering if he would get back to sleep. He needed to try, so he would. Eyes going shut, he sighed, but was still grinning. Oh, he couldn't wait for this!A big grin on his face, Sirius just watched Harry, hand rubbing up and down over his bare stomach. Yeah, Harry was enthused and he loved seeing it. He just needed to make sure he slept for a few more hours.
As Harry sat down at the table for breakfast, he put the pad with his list, Hogwarts letter and a ball cap by him on the table. Hagrid should be here shortly to take them to Diagon Alley, something that had him very excited. Though he was highly enthused, he was trying to keep his head about him so he could remember all they had to do and take care of. Hence the list. There was also another list on the pad for bits they might need to look into.
After taking his juice from his aunt and starting to nibble on a piece of toast with jam, he flipped to the second page of the pad at Sirius' prompting then told her, “It says in the letter Hagrid has my vault key. When it comes to that part, shouldn't we get an—is it called an accounting of my assets so we know what I have?”As she worked on breakfast, also focusing on all else they had to tend to, Petunia gave a slow nod. “Yes, we need to. Quite a good suggestion, Harry. We'll tend to that chore while at the bank.” Turning to look at him, she said, “Happy Birthday!”“Thanks,” he told her with a sheepish grin, nibbling more on the toast, looking the list over. After turning back to the stove, she said, “We'll save your presents for tonight, like normal. This trip should take most of the morning. My thought was to have lunch out, inviting this Hagrid along for helping, after we finish. If I remember right, the entrance to Diagon Alley is through a pub for your kind. We can eat there if you like, something I'm sure you'll enjoy.”“I would like that, a lot,” Harry told her with a nod and huge grin. Sirius was explaining to him about the Leaky Cauldron and he couldn't wait to see it. Polishing off the last of the toast, he asked, flipping back to the list of what he needed, “About the bank bit—do I need to get money, do we change it, what? Do you know?”“I'll pay for what you need, nothing to worry about there,” she told him, smiling as she forked the sausages out of the pan and turned the heat down before cracking in the eggs. “We'll get some out of your vault for you to use if you want or need anything. I can exchange my money for the Wizarding version at the bank, nothing to concern yourself with.”As Harry sipped at his juice, he nodded to her, listening to Sirius talk about what was on the list and other bits. Then there came a hammering on the front door that sounded like someone was trying to break it down. Eyes wide, he looked at his aunt as Sirius chuckled, explaining that must be Hagrid and he would understand why it was so loud in a minute.Though startled and having jumped, Petunia called that she was coming then hurried off to answer it, drying her hands on a towel as she went. When he heard her coming back, accompanied by heavy loud footsteps and talking to someone with a deep voice and accent, Harry watched the doorway to get his first glimpse of the half-giant, trying to envision what Sirius talked about. As Hagrid came in, having to duck and turn sideways to get through the doorway, his eyes widened at the sheer size of the man. He was huge. Honestly, he had thought when Sirius mentioned big, it would be something like the tall of basketball players he'd seen. This was far beyond those and just wide in a way none of them were. He was quite intimidating, but seemed rather nice as he spoke to his aunt.“'ello, 'arry,” Hagrid said after taking a seat at the table, the chair he sat in groaning ominously. With a soft 'ta', he took a beaker of tea from Petunia and sipped it. “Ye've grown up nicely since the last time I saw you.”“Thanks,” Harry told him with a smile, not sure what else to say, taking in everything about the man. After finishing the eggs, Petunia began serving them up, making sure to add a plate for Hagrid. Since she still cooked enough for what she was used to, there was plenty to give the huge man. Passing Harry his normal plate, she also put one in front of Hagrid with a smile, though it was a tad strained. “Eat. There is plenty. While we do, we'll go over some questions we have.”“Much obliged,” Hagrid told her honestly with a smile, digging into the wonderful food. Albus had told him to expect problems, though the letter had been accepted, but he was pleased to find there weren't any. Petunia appeared like she was accepting what was coming and ready to tend to the tasks. Harry gave the impression of being well cared for, nicely groomed, a good weight and not mistreated, even better. After taking a seat and settling in herself, Petunia began eating while Harry talked a bit with the huge man. While she listened, she also pulled over Harry's list and checked it over, the same with what was on the second page to make sure they missed nothing. When there was a lull in the conversation, as Hagrid finished eating and was sipping his tea, she said, “We decided that Harry should wear one of his caps while we go shopping. I've filled him in on all I know of what went on over the years, so we thought it best to hide the scar so he's not gawked at.”“Wise choice,” Hagrid told her with a nod, not having thought of that end, though slightly dejected that he couldn't show off who he was with. It was better, though. “M'sure most know he's coming this year, o' course, but let him keep his privacy.”“Our thoughts,” Petunia said with a smile. Then she pressed on to asking about how to get into the Alley if Harry wasn't around, the platform for the train, if the store she remembered that helped protect Muggle objects from magic was still there and the Knight Bus if Harry had problems. As Hagrid answered, she wrote down what she needed. While these were the most obvious, she was sure more would come up as they went along. While he ate, Harry was almost bouncing in place, excited to get on with the new adventure, something that had Sirius chuckling and trying to keep him calm. Oh, he couldn't wait for this! Not only was it the start of his new life, one among his own kind, but he was finally looking at getting away from his aunt for long stretches of time. Brilliant! However, as his aunt talked, he told Sirius she was really irritating him with this show. That's all it was and he knew it; something to make her look good. After all, she wouldn't have cared one wit if Dudley hadn't died. He said he thought she was just doing this to make herself look good for those she would encounter. In the past, she wouldn't have let anyone that looked like Hagrid anywhere near their house.Though he paid attention to what Petunia was saying, Sirius also listened to what Harry was coming across with as well. Thankfully, his godson could keep a straight face and pretend he was paying attention while they talked through the connection they had. And he agreed with everything Harry said, honestly. The woman was putting on a good show for everyone, pretending to be the proud, caring parent. That's all it was. Which meant keeping Harry away from her was for the best, for more reasons than just her. He was sure that at some point in the future, Harry wouldn't hold his tongue on such topics like he was now. When he could not longer remain quiet about it, something Sirius wouldn’t blame him in the least for, it wouldn't be pretty. He just had to hold that off as long as he could, nothing more. It was something he could, and would, do.
Harry adjusted the bags he had in his arms to a more comfortable position. While these were the Wizarding version of bags, something that wasn't nearly as heavy as the Muggle kind, from what he learned, there were enough of them that it was slightly awkward to carry. Thankfully, the worst one, his trunk, was shrunken in a bag itself. Of course, he got the deluxe version he wanted and needed, something that probably made it heavier, thus he was happier about having to carry the bags.
While he was now tired, as it was almost noon, he was still plenty excited. They had been all over, not to mention the cart ride in Gringotts, something that left both his aunt and Hagrid looking somewhat green, and had picked up most of the items on the list. They also picked up plenty else, like books. When he saw some in the shop, he felt he had to have them, like Hogwarts; A History. It didn't make the bags any heavier, just added more bulk to them. They had most everything by now when it came to the school supplies, thankfully. He had his books, ingredients, telescope, robes and the rest of the supplies. They even stopped into a shop that was supposed to help Wizards and Witches who needed to use some Muggle devices to stay in touch with their family reinforce them. While the Wizard at the counter said he couldn't guarantee it, he had put some spells on his cell phone. It worked, as they had tried a call, but not well. Sirius and Hagrid, both, said they weren't sure if it would work at Hogwarts, something he hoped for. There hadn’t been any problems either, other than Aunt Petunia getting huffy with a ferret-faced boy when he went on about thinking Muggle-borns shouldn't be allowed at Hogwarts. She had heard then told him coldly that Harry's mum was a Muggle-born and was Head Girl. That seemed to shut the prat up, though he shot her a malevolent look over it. Sirius told him that he thought the prat's name was Draco Malfoy. If it was, he was someone Harry needed to watch out for at school. Then he promised to explain it all when they were home and had time. As long as he understood why, Harry was good with waiting.Though he was listening to Sirius and looking at what his godfather was pointing out to him, Harry was also paying attention to his aunt and Hagrid. As they were going over everything, he asked, “How much more do we have to pick up?”Petunia put her hand on Harry's head then told him, still looking at the list, “Your wand and the owls. I think we'll do the wand first. That can take some time. The owls should come last so we don't have to upset them too much by carrying them around with us.”“Brilliant,” Harry said, grinning bigger. The wand! Oh, he couldn't wait for this! Of all of the things they had picked up so far, this was the one he wanted the most.“Ollivanders is the place for wands,” Hagrid told them, chortling at the look on Harry's face. “Fix yer righ' up, he will,” he added, guiding them in that direction.Almost bouncing along, Harry was still grinning. His wand! He was finally getting it!A sad smile on her face, knowing Harry getting his wand was the final confirmation he was leaving her September first, Petunia said, making sure she kept her usual tone, “This might take a while. It did for your mother, if I remember right.”Harry honestly didn't care how long it took, just so he had his wand! Though he was doing his best to stay calm, he wasn't managing well. He just hoped the shop wasn't far off and they could get there quickly without having to wait.Unable to help himself, Sirius grinned, hand on Harry's shoulder. This was good. The trip had gone fine without problems. No one looked at Harry oddly, another plus. From what he could tell, he wasn't noticed either. While he assumed that no one would, with the types of people they would be around, it was always a chance. He was happy no one did. It told him that he would be fine once at Hogwarts as well, thankfully. He had gained enough power by now that he didn't have to worry much, other than around a very select few. Those he would manage with.As Harry almost bounced along, excited, he still grinned and tried to keep his godson calm. It wasn't going to work, but he was going to try. No sense in drawing attention to themselves if they could at all help it.
After he put another wand down on the counter, one that had caused something to crash into one of the walls, Harry shook his head. He wasn't sure how long they had been in here trying wands, but it felt like forever to him. That and he had gone through what seemed like half the wands in the store. Though Ollivander didn't seem at all concerned, he actually seemed excited by the challenge, he was starting to worry they wouldn't find one suited to him.
As he stayed right next to Harry, Sirius assured him, “Don't worry, he always finds a wand. Sometimes it just takes time, that's all. You're just tricky, for several reasons. Hell, it took him finding me one what seemed like forever.”“I know, just getting worried,” Harry sighed as the man was in the back mumbling about wondering and the sounds of boxes being moved.“You'll walk out with a wand, I promise,” Sirius told him with a squeeze on the shoulder. As the shop was far darker than outside, he wasn't worried about anyone noticing him because of the thick shadows. When the old man brought up one he said to try, muttering something about being curious, Harry gave it a shot. The reaction from this one was far different. It seemed like it didn't want him touching it, as though it was trying to repel him by making him feel uncomfortable, then it set fire to the entire desk. Eyes wide, he dropped the wand and backed off. “Uh—that one didn't like me at all!” He stuttered out.“No, no it didn't,” Ollivander said, putting out the flames then sending the wand back to its place, far away from the young Wizard. “Not surprising, really, as its brother gave you your scar.” Then, without explaining what he meant, he once more headed to the back to try something else. Now, Harry was highly curious about what the man meant by what he said and asked Sirius, reaching up to finger his scar as he did.“I'm not sure,” Sirius told him honestly, curious about what was said himself. “Only thing I can think of is it might mean it was somehow related to the wand the evil git that killed your parents had. Either way, it doesn't mean much, other than it rejected you. Nothing bad there, Harry!”“True,” Harry said, trying not to grin as the man came back with more boxes. With a sigh, he began taking out wands again. None of them suited him, though they didn't have the bad reaction the one had. At least that was a plus. Finally, as he was down to the last box brought out, something that had Ollivander muttering about wondering again when he handed the wand over, Harry took it with some trepidation but felt a wonderful tingling, the kind that made his hair stand up in a good way. Then he gave it a wave. A rainbow of sparks came out the end. He had his wand. One had finally chosen him.“Ah, yes,” Ollivander smiled, looking disheveled, but happy. “We have a match. It's fifteen inches, a bit rigid. The wood is black oak with the core a griffin feather. Very good for defense.”As he looked the wand over, Harry thought it looked familiar somehow. It looked different than the other wands he tried as it didn't really have a handle on it. The end he was gripping was square, tapering towards the other end, smoothing out into a round shape. Intricate runes were carved on all sides of it rather than the type of decorations the others had.Petunia stepped up by Harry then went to pay the man, smiling at her nephew. “What did you mean by wondering when you gave it over?” She asked, curious herself about what he said.“While I easily remember every wand I've made and sold, this one is odd in the shape and style. It's far different than anything else I've ever built over my time. Griffin feathers aren't something I've used much, as I find them a bit temperamental with who they'll accept. Some years ago, two feathers from an old male griffin came into my possession. They both wanted the same style of wand. In fact, they both demanded that the wands be twins. I sold the brother to this wand the same year your sister bought hers. It went to young Sirius Black, the person that betrayed Mr. Potter's parents to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. It's most curious, don't you think?”“Rather creepy if you ask me,” Petunia said dourly, not sure if she liked this man or not. Well, or the wand, honestly. Though she wasn't sure how the wands worked, it seemed strange to her, and a bit morbid.Staring at the wand he held, Harry tried not to grin. He had the twin wand of Sirius'. That was bloody brilliant! And he now knew where he had seen it as Sirius had his, in a form anyway, the shadow form he was. Though he wasn't sure how Sirius still had his wand, as he couldn't remember him having it when he first showed up, but he did now. And it was the same. Absolutely perfect!Sirius was grinning himself over what was said, nodding. He didn't find it that odd, but he knew something the rest didn't, about the connection there. It made sense to him. Hell, he was pleased Harry had the same wand. He was sure it meant something more, but they wouldn't find out until time passed. A smug look on his face, he said, “You have your wand and it's a good one.”“I do,” Harry said, clutching onto it tightly. It already felt like a part of him and he wasn't about to let it go. As he let Aunt Petunia and Hagrid lead him out, talking about getting their owls and something to eat, he couldn't help but think that this signaled something huge for him.
With a chuckle, Sirius took a seat on the floor by Harry. It was later that night, long after they came home. Petunia was tired from all that went on and had gone to bed early. Even Harry looked a tad worn out himself from it. Not only had they done Diagon Alley, but she had taken Harry to a play he wanted to see, something his godson loved and he enjoyed as well. Then they had done a bit of shopping before coming home. Supper was all of Harry's favorite foods then a cake she had picked up from a local bakery. Of course, there was a mass of birthday presents as well. This time, though it was over the top like she had been doing, they were more practical items such as clothes, shoes, whatever, that Harry could take with him. Though he rolled his eyes at the four pairs of expensive trainers she bought, he didn't say anything. At least they were something Harry had a use for, unlike some of the crap she kept buying him.
At the moment, Harry had most of his presents shoved aside, too focused on the bits they had picked up in the Alley. His trunk was open and he was trying to organize how he wanted everything in it while ending up distracted looking through his new school books. Typical Harry was his thought as he grinned. “You'll have plenty of time to devour them before you have to leave, trust me. And you'll want to read Hogwarts; A History as well. It'll give you some insight into what you'll be dealing with.”“I can't wait to delve into them,” Harry admitted with a grin, pushing them into a pile. “They all look fascinating!”“The more you know going in, at least of the theory, the better you'll do,” Sirius told him honestly, crossing his ankles and wrapping his arms around his shins. A glance over to where the snowy owl that latched on to Harry was perched, who he dubbed Hedwig, he said, “She and Barnabas seem to get on well. Which is good. You don't want your owls fighting, after all.” Barnabas was a Long-Eared Owl that Petunia had picked up. He was staying downstairs.“No, that wouldn't be good,” Harry chuckled, picking up his list of what he planned to take, adding more to it. With a sigh, he lowered it then looked at the phone, a sour expression on his face. “Do you actually think that thing will work in the castle?”“I doubt it, Harry,” Sirius told him honestly. “It might work like outside on the grounds away from the castle, but I don't think you'll have to worry about her bugging you all the time.”“Good,” Harry said with a relieved sigh. “I don't want her to if I can at all help it. Owls are good enough for that bit.”“I'm in complete agreement,” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. “Right, I say we start organizing this mass and getting as much packed as we can, since I'm sure you're taking most of your books! Well, other than your clothes. Those will have to wait until last. Between the two of us, we can knock this off tonight. We also have to get you to tap your wand on the compartments so only you can get into them.” Because the trunk Harry picked out was one of the really high end ones, it was keyed into his magic. The shopkeeper had done most of it when they bought it, but when Harry came home, he had to tap his wand in various places. This would allow him to lighten, shrink and lock it without the use of magic out of school. They were both of the opinion that it was best to make sure some of the compartments were keyed in so if Harry needed to hide something from Petunia, he could. The letter about his estate came to mind there. An enthused Harry then made sure his list was propped up before starting to grab books. He figured once he had all the books he wanted, the rest would come easy for him.As Harry worked, Sirius smiled, making sure to keep touching him when he could. This was good and, though being in the school would be more stressful for him, it would help Harry. As Harry shifted around what he could, he began talking about what they could do for the next month while Harry waited to leave. One of his suggestions was to practice with the quill so he could use it before he was forced to. The next was to spend time each night going over his school books so he could understand troublesome bits Harry was having and adjust accordingly. Both ideas would help tremendously when Harry was finally at school. He also talked about getting into Grimmauld Place and going through that letter from Gringotts. They wouldn't tonight, of course, but he wanted it done fast, just in case. While Harry tended to packing, he smiled. Yes, this was going smoothly, what he wanted. However, as he did, he wondered about that small package Hagrid had picked up. The bit about it being official business for the school had him curious and more than slightly apprehensive. He was sure it related to what he had heard about in his wanderings. And he didn't like it a bit. It was just something that would have to wait until it began to play out, nothing more. He was more than a match for whatever stunt anyone tried to pull with it.After Harry sat down on his lap, he wrapped his arms around him then began answering the multitude of questions his godson had about everything. He didn't mind, honestly. It was all part of taking care of Harry. As he started answering questions about the Knight Bus, he chuckled then described what riding it was like. Harry was soon laughing at his description of it, shaking his head. Pressing on to the mass of other bits Harry wanted to cover, he just held him close, hands slipping under his shirt and rubbing his stomach. Their life was about to change, and he would make damned sure it was for the better.
