Malfoy awoke in his parents home.
He recognized the familiar silk damask walls of his old room—a pale silver—and groaned. It was blindingly bright. Why, why did everyone seek to irritate him? He didn't even remember coming home. How much did he drink? If they were fighting about him then they could just piss off. Draco loathed his mother and had a barely tolerable relationship with his father.
Even worse, and not surprising, he could hear the raised voices of his parents from downstairs. Why they never used a muffing spell was one of life's many mysteries.
Well, that was not entirely accurate. Actually he did know.
Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy were so wrapped up in themselves that it would be a cold day in hell when they acknowledged that there were indeed other people in the world.
Draco was well-aware of the role he was expected to play when in their company: dutiful son, upholding the ancient family traditions, and above all, stay out of their way. His parents were the most emotionally frigid people he ever knew. Unsurprising, he inherited their cold logic and glaring lack of empathy. It served him well, as did the genetics and fortune he had access to merely by being born to them. It suited them all to simply remain out of touch until something--usually a publicity event--forced them together.
Their courtship was a mystery, and he never cared to ask. It was amazing that they found the time to take a breather, fuck, and produce him.
Right now he wanted them to be silent. Otherwise he would seriously kill them. Groaning, he reached for his wand, but all he met was air. Accio wand. He flicked it, uttering a quick silencing spell, vowed to swear off anything that bore even the most remote resemblance to fire whiskey, and drifted off to sleep.__‘…so much for seals.’ Narcissa laughed bitterly, shaking her head. But she was anything but pleased. But she was past the point of pretending to care.
‘I am hardly to blame,’ Lucius coldly replied, looking at her as if she were some kind of bacteria to be examined, ‘I made it clear that the only guarantee was marriage. However--’
She looked away, but he seized her arm in a bruising grip, unrelenting until she finally looked at him with hate-filled eyes, ‘however you insisted that the boy be given the freedom to make his choices. I reminded you of the potential for disaster. But you insisted.’
She refused to accept this from him, not after everything he had done, ‘You don’t give a damn about him or me. All you care about is one thing. And its name starts with an L and ends in S, just to give you a clue.’
He flung her away, ‘Let me remind you that it was I, not you, who gave you the chance to lead the life you wanted. Tell me, Narcissa, what have you done? Besides gaze at yourself in the mirror. Please, do tell. You play the part of concerned mother very well. ’
‘How dare you! I am the only one in this entire family who actually has the capacity to feel anything even closely resembling affection. You’re the one responsible for what he is. You made him this way. You and your lies have done nothing but tear this family apart.’
Lucius narrowed his eyes, ‘You test my patience.’
‘I am finished. I will not bear the label of ‘bad parent’ any longer. I told you to just let them alone and let it run its course. But you and your pride and ambition—not only have you ruined our lives you’ve ruined your sons!’
He hit her.
She wasn’t as strong as him, and she should have expected it. It was his nature, after all, to react with agression.
She lay on the floor, hating the silence. Always alone. No one to champion her, only herself and every time he proved that she was weaker merely because of his sex.
Carefully, she picked herself up. And she straightened her clothing.
‘He won’t remember what happened last night, but Lucius I will never forget this. I am finished. Done.’
‘Darling, please desist in these empty threats. And know that as lacking as you are, Narcissa, be grateful in knowing that it was I who accepted you. And never forget that it was you who begged me to marry you. I made the correct choice, took the proper precautions, making certain our son will forget and thus ensuring that he never need know the measures one must take to reject a thoroughly unsuitable mate.’ His eyes turned silver, 'Something you will never know.'
This time she threw her head back and laughed, ‘How nice it must be, to so easily sever ties, to completely remove all hurdles between you and your wants. As much as I hate her, I wish she were alive to torture you as you torture me!’
She knew she crossed the line when his wings tore through his clothes and he pointed a sharp, black claw at her, ‘Why not I kill you too, woman? Why not?’
This time she would not step down. Her eyes turned red, after all, the females of their race were different, ‘If you do not right your errors, husband, I promise you will soon understand the fury of a female veela. By all means, kill me. But know that at I will take you with me.’
He hissed, but instead of following through with his threat, he stormed from the room, cursing in the old tongue.
She glanced in the direction of her only child’s room.
What did you call this lingering sense of attachment? It certainly was not not love, not in the normal sense. No, she learned over the years that her attachments were more like loyalties. Loyalty to family. Loyalty to one's child. How her mother would laugh if she could see her daughter now.She warned her of the consequences of her actions.
But Narcissa had been young, confusing her first sexual awakening with 'love'.
'That is not love,' Her mother had sneered, 'And now you have ruined everything.'She was stubborn. Her son, she knew, had inherited this quality from her.Narcissa had latched onto the first man she had ever lusted after, and allowed herself to believe he cared for her.It did not matter that their love did not follow the usual guidelines for their kind: there was no marking, but there had been obsession. And she, foolish girl, merely thought that her love had been different because she was only half-veela.Just as Lucius had been. Slowly, carefully, she made her way to the back of the house. How easily she had been deceived. How gullible, how naive, and most of all, how silly, that her lingering obsession and attachment managed to fade through the years.
Narcissa Malfoy doubted there was anyone who loathed Lucius Malfoy more than herself. And then she felt a smile slowly form on her perfect, pretty face.
No...there was one other...
She could not love her son; she was anything if not a convincing actress. And she would use any tool in her arsenal to humiliate Lucius Malfoy, even if it meant supporting her son’s union with a disgusting mudblood—should the time come.___________
