“So, how are things going with your mate?” Pansy asked Draco as he sat down for breakfast.
Draco beamed. “Wonderfully, actually. He’s great.”
Pansy smiled at him. “I’m really happy for you. You look so much better now. Love is a good look for you.”
Draco smiled, turning his attention to his food when the post came in. He looked up to find that his mother’s owl was heading for him. He frowned as Magnus landed in front of him, imperiously holding out a leg with a letter tied to it.
Draco took the letter and watched as Magnus flew away again.
Pansy raised an eyebrow. “Your mother doesn’t usually send letters without care packages unless it’s something serious. What’s going on?”
Draco just shook his head, opening the letter. He had no idea.
“My Dearest Draco,
I miss you, my son. This letter is an impersonal way to tell you, but you are now the Head of the family. Your father was found dead in his Azkaban cell two days ago, apparently from poison. How he got it is unknown, and it is being looked into. I had considered coming to the school to tell you, but I decided it is best if you keep to your studies.
I know there was little love between you two, but he was still your father, and I understand if this news hits you hard. Severus knows, and will have his door open if you should go to him needing to talk.
As the new Head of the Malfoy family, your father’s study will only open to you now, and you will need to go over his business dealings and decide which will continue, and which you would rather pull out of. I expect to see you for the Christmas holiday so that you can take the time to do so.
Your loving mother,
Narcissa Shaula Malfoy”
Draco folded the letter and put it in his pocket. “My father’s dead.” He said tonelessly.
Pansy gasped. “What happened?”
Draco shrugged. “They suspect poison. I need to go.” He said, getting up and heading back to his room.
From across the Great Hall, Harry watched him leave. “Where’s he going?” He muttered, frowning.
Hermione pulled him back down when he made to stand. “No, you need to eat, Harry. You can worry about him later. He won’t thank you for starving yourself, you know.” She told him firmly.
Harry sighed. “Fine. But after breakfast, I’m going to check on him.”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “If you feel you must. You’re lucky you have a free period first, because you really can’t afford to miss any classes.” She warned him.
“I know, Mione. I’m not going to, but what if it’s something serious? He hardly ate anything! Don’t you think that’s a bit alarming?!” He asked irritably.
Hermione shrugged. “I don’t know, but that owl was his mother’s. I recognized it. It’s probably a reprimand for getting you pregnant or something.” She said.
“How would she know about that? We only found out two days ago.” Harry asked her.
Hermione shrugged. “That’s plenty of time for an owl to be sent to her. Maybe she was notified because she’s Draco’s mother? I don’t know for sure if they do that here, but it doesn’t seem too far-fetched, now does it?”
“I guess not.” Harry muttered. He finished eating in record time and got up. “I’ll see you guys in class.” He said to Ron and Hermione, then headed for his and Draco’s room.
He found Draco sitting on the couch in front of the fire, staring blankly into it.
“Draco?” Harry sat down next to him. “What’s wrong?” He wrapped his arms around Draco’s waist.
Draco gave a massive shudder and folded in half, sobbing. He turned to bury his face in Harry’s chest, wrapping his arms around the Gryffindor and holding on tightly.
Harry’s eyes widened and he began smoothing his hands over Draco’s lower back. “Shh, it’s okay. We’re okay. What’s going on?” He asked again, softer this time.
Draco sniffed and shook his head. “My father. He’s dead.” He answered. “I’m now the Head of the family.” He told Harry.
Harry bit his lip. “Oh. Are you going to be okay?” He asked, then could have kicked himself. Of course Draco was going to be okay, but it would take more time. He’d just lost a parent!
Draco wiped his face with his hands and nodded, pulling away from Harry. “I’ll be fine, really. It was just a shock, that’s all.”
Harry let him pull away, but grabbed his face in both hands, then drew him in for a slightly wet kiss, doing his best to ease what pain he could through the gentle press of lips against lips. “I don’t mind if you need to cry some more. I won’t tell. He was your father, I understand that you’re hurting.” He said, staring into Draco’s eyes.
Draco smiled tremulously. “It’s fine. We weren’t really that close. It’s more like losing a patriarch than a parent. He was there, but always distant, except for when he needed to involve himself with me.” He explained. “And there were few enough of those times.”
Harry took Draco’s hand in both of his own and just sat there while Draco pulled himself together. Niveus flew over to land on Draco’s shoulder as he seemed to recover and nuzzled him.
Harry and Draco smiled as a wave of sympathy was felt from her.
“I think she likes you, Draco.” Harry remarked.
Draco reached up and stroked a hand down her warm feathers. “Thank you, girl. I appreciate it.” He murmured.
Niveus trilled in response and nuzzled him again.
Harry squeezed Draco’s hand. “So, do you have anything you need to do as Head of the family? Sounds like a big responsibility.”
Draco took a deep, shuddering breath and nodded. “Yes, I have to go to the Manor over Christmas holiday and go through Father’s business dealings and decide which I’m going to continue and which I’m not.” He grimaced. “I’m not looking forward to that. I also need to formally court you, since we’re both the Heads of old families, but since we have a creature bond in place, sex is permitted.” He smiled at Harry. “Thankfully.”
Harry blushed. “Formally court? Didn’t we already do that part?” He asked.
Draco shook his head. “No. A formal courtship is much more involved. Since I’m the Dominant partner, you just have to let yourself accept the gifts I’ll be sending you and be receptive to any overtures I make towards you.”
Harry snorted. “I don’t know how much more receptive I can get. I’m already pregnant with your child, that’s pretty receptive in my book.”
Niveus flew back to the desk and began preening herself as Draco rolled his shoulders and stood. “Well, we have class to get to.” He said, then cast a quick charm to erase any evidence of his crying earlier. “There, now I’m presentable again.”
Harry stood with him and flung his rucksack over his shoulder.
“No, I’ll carry that.” Draco said, easing it off his shoulder and taking it from him.
“For God’s sake, Draco, I can carry my own bag!” Harry shouted.
Draco waved a hand. “No, let me. I want to do this for you. Humor me?” He asked, smiling winningly.
Harry sighed. “Fine, whatever.”
*****
Draco ignored Professor Binns’ droning in favor of reading through the letter he had composed one last time.
“Dear Mother,
Thank you for telling me. I am aware of my duties, and will come home for the holidays ready to carry them out.
Since I am now the Head of the family, I must ask for the Malfoy promise ring to be sent to me, so that I may begin formally courting my mate. I would like to see you in person soon, so that I may inform you of who it is, and why this is so important.
You may have noticed that I used the word ‘mate,’ signifying that I have come into a creature inheritance. I haven’t had a chance to tell you yet, because I have been focusing on winning over my mate, and now that I have, I am free to take my time courting them.
Please understand that I did not mean to keep it from you, only father, and I was worried that you might feel the need to tell him if I told you any sooner. I am not worried about your reaction to my inheritance or my mate, as I know you love me, and will continue to do so, no matter what happens.
Your loving son,
Draco Lucius Malfoy”
He folded it up and put it in his bag, stuck in the middle of his Arithmancy book for safekeeping.
Now he only needed to figure out exactly how he was supposed to explain to his mother that his mate was a boy, and worse, a half-blood.
That it was Harry Potter himself was the one thing that could either save the match, in her eyes, or damn it.
And even Draco didn’t know which way it would go.
*****
“Enter.”
Draco opened the door to Severus’ office and stepped in. “Sir, my mother told me she contacted you?” He asked, taking the seat in front of the man’s desk.
Severus set down the papers he was reading and folded his hands, laying them on top of the stack. “She did; however, I thought you would rather seek solace in Mr. Potter’s arms. I am willing to talk, if that is what you came for.”
Draco cleared his throat. “Sir, I came for a much more pressing matter.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Do enlighten me, Mr. Malfoy.”
“I am now the Head of the family. I am within my rights to formally court Harry Potter.” Draco explained, folding his hands in his lap.
Severus inclined his head. “Indeed you are, and that is the only way you can claim him without the chance that someone else could later steal him away. But why are you coming to me with this? Do you feel the need to gain my permission, as your Godfather?” He asked mildly.
Draco shook his head. “No, Sir. I was wondering if you would chaperone us, were I to begin formally courting him?”
Severus stared at him for a long moment.
Draco did his best not to fidget under the assessing gaze.
Severus smiled. “I would be honored to act as your chaperone, Mr. Malfoy. Thank you for asking me.”
“Thank you for accepting, Sir. I know this will be an unconventional courtship, thanks to the creature bond, but I know that a chaperone is important. I want the courtship to be adhered to in all areas but the bedroom.” Draco explained.
“Very well. I assume you have already asked your mother for the promise ring?” Severus asked.
Draco nodded. “I just sent Hermes off with my letter. She’ll be coming to speak with me soon so I can explain who my mate is. And hope that she won’t be horrified with the choice fate has made for me.”
Severus smiled. “I believe, Mr. Malfoy, that your mother may yet surprise you.” He said.
Draco nodded. “I certainly hope so, Sir. Goodbye.” He said, getting up and heading for the door.
“Good day, Mr. Malfoy.” Severus said, picking up the papers again.
*****
Draco watched Harry eating with his friends at the Gryffindor table long enough to be sure he was eating well, then turned his attention to his own dinner.
“So, Draco, now that you’re the Head of the family, are you going to formally court your mate?” Pansy asked. “It’s a good idea. He’s quite a catch, you know.”
Draco sighed. “Of course I am, Pansy dear. I’m not stupid. I already asked Mother for the promise ring, and I assure you, as soon as it’s in my possession, it will be on his finger. I’m not wasting any time. He’ll be mine, well and truly.” He said with relish, smirking.
Blaise snorted. “I’m surprised you weren’t doing that earlier. Someone could have still stolen him later. You normally don’t leave any outs when you go for something you want so much.”
Draco flushed. “Really, Blaise, do you see my father agreeing to let me court him? I honestly didn’t have that option until now. Mother will allow it. She won’t want me dead, so she’ll agree to it whether she likes him as a son-in-law, or not. I almost think Father would have rather seen me dead.” He explained.
“Oh. You make a good point.” Blaise said softly.
Draco rolled his eyes. Honestly, if he’d had the option of courting Harry earlier, he would have done it. Even marriage wasn’t considered binding in the Wizarding world unless a courtship had taken place first, and he didn’t fancy someone trying to steal his mate out from under him, literally. Harry was HIS, that’s just all there was to it.
*****
Draco smirked, sending Hermes off. The courting gloves he’d bought on a whim last year were finally going to be put to use. And his mother would be coming in a few days to talk to him about his mate, and she’d told him she’d be bringing the promise ring with her.
Things were coming along nicely.
He headed down to breakfast and took his seat at the Slytherin table, flashing Harry a wide smile.
Harry smiled back and blushed, then dropped his eyes to his plate, nibbling a piece of bacon semi-distractedly as he listened to Hermione.
The post came in, and Draco watched as Hermes landed in front of Harry, dropping the small box in his lap.
*****
Harry looked down at the small white box with a silver ribbon on it. He looked up at Draco, who was smirking at him. He nodded.
Harry opened the box to find a pair of white gloves. “What..?”
Hermione smiled. “They’re an intention to court, Harry.” She said.
Ron’s mouth dropped open. “But who—No, don’t put them on!”
Harry was already halfway through putting them on.
“Oh, honestly, Ron, that’s Draco’s owl, you git!” Hermione said with a giggle.
“Oh. Well, why didn’t he do this sooner?!” Ron groused, flushing, as Hermes inclined his head at Harry and flew off.
Harry’s smile faltered. “Oh, it might have something to do with him being Head of his family now.” He said.
Ron frowned. “What, his father die, or something?” He asked.
“Yes.” Harry answered.
“So, he’s going to formally court you? That’s good. I don’t think you know, but unless he does it this way, someone else could claim courting rights later, and that’s the only way a marriage is well and truly binding in the Wizarding world. It’s all very formal and strict. But what about the creature bond?” Hermione asked, suddenly realizing that a courtship usually spanned at least three months, and Draco didn’t really have that kind of time left before he had to claim Harry, or sicken and die.
“Well, he said that sex would be permitted, so I’m assuming the claiming will be allowed, too.” Harry told her, flushing.
Hermione nodded. “Yes, that makes sense. So the courtship will be a little redundant, but still, it’s good to follow it as best you can, in any case.”
Harry nodded, finishing breakfast quickly and bringing Ron and Hermione to wait in front of the Transfiguration classroom.
Draco showed up with his friends a few minutes later, smirking as he eyed Harry’s hands. “Those look good on you, Harry.” He purred.
Harry smiled at him. “I agree.”
Draco wrapped his arms around the Gryffindor’s waist. “How about a kiss for your suitor, hm?”
Harry leaned in and kissed him gently, just as the door to class opened.
Draco licked his lips as Harry pulled away. “You always taste so sweet.” He whispered as he passed into the classroom.
Hermione sighed softly from beside Harry. “He’s a charmer.”
Harry grinned at her. “And he’s all mine.” He said smugly.
