So here is the next update! I am so sorry that it took so long but between real life and writers block it took me a while the get the end of this update to the point where i was happy with it. The next chapter will take a couple of weeks at least and hopefully it will be longer. I hope I still have readers out there!
Chapter SevenHe was back in the ritual room deep under Gringotts and the ritual had just reached the point when the triangle had lifted him into the air. He was once again surrounded with piercing white light but instead of the ritual continuing as he remembered the white light grew stronger before slowly fading away. With the light gone Harry found himself standing on a barren, wind swept plain doted with large rocks and dead grass. He turned in a circle trying to find something that stood out but the plain was almost uni-formal in all directions. Thinking that a higher vantage point might help he headed over to one of the rocks, but when he got to it he realized that it wasn't a rock at all. It was a dead and blackened stump of a once ancient tree, it had been huge before its demise. Harry turned from the stump and once more looked around the plain at all 'rocks'. He was standing in a dead forest.“Horrible isn't it?” The voice was female, soft, and musical, it sounded as if it came from the very air around him. “The destruction that can come from the greed and power hunger of man was unimaginable even for us.”
Harry turned around to see two beings who practically radiated power standing behind him. They appeared human, a man and woman, but their appearances kept changing, as if they had no set appearance of their own but cycled through others. Looking at them a feeling passed over him, a mixture of awe, reverence, comfort, and, strangely, of coming home. Harry felt a pull towards them and let himself be drawn forward to stand before them. The woman smiled down at him while the man gave him a friendly nod.
“What happened here?” Harry kept his voice soft, as if he was standing in a graveyard.
“War.” The man's voice was strong and powerful, it resonated out around the plain.
“What war?” Harry asked him.
“The first.”
Harry nodded before asking, “Why am I here?”
“To be given a choice. A chance to save lives.” The woman spoke softly. “A force that was once locked away, one that should never have been locked away, is on its way back. The wall separating it from this world is wearing thin and soon it will burst forth to retake its place in the natural order of things. Wild magic Harry is a fundamental part of this world but during the First War it was locked away by the unnatural actions of human wizards. But it was like trying to hold back an ocean wave, the longer its held back the stronger it becomes so that when it finally gets through the damage it causes will be twenty times as destructive as it would have been originally.”
“And the wave is coming, Harry.” The man's voice had a finality to it that told Harry that it didn't bode well for them when it happened. “Soon.”
“You said I was to be given a choice? It is to stop this?”
“No. There is no way to stop what is coming, it is a resetting to the natural order of things.” She paused to glance at her male counterpart. “No your choice is whether or not to limit the loss. If the Wild Magic comes through on its own, bursting through the wall, the loss of life will be cataclysmic, little to no human survivors and even those with Fae blood will be hit hard. But if you are willing to pay the price you can limit the damage drastically. You can bring the Wild Magic through now, using yourself as a buffer, and it will be a slow release, much less damaging to the human population. But the price will be high, Harry.”
“But it will save hundreds of lives.” Harry looked down at the ground absentmindedly rubbing his wrist. “Then there is no other option, I'll do it. What ever the price, I'll pay it.”
The Lady gave him a sad smile as the world around him began to fade. “Very well my Child. The price will be paid.”
The world went dark around him and for a moment he seemed to float suspended in the darkness. Then he started to hear voices talking and the darkness began to lighten. “I can't believe he forgot us.” It was the woman's voice and she sounded amused and perturbed at the same time. “I had hoped that we had made a larger impression on him.”
“Give him a break my Lady, he did go through a lot of pain shortly afterward.” The man's voice held amusement.
The darkness cleared and he was once again standing on the plain, but it was different. The very air seemed more alive and the grass was greener then it had been. Many of the stumps seemed to have disappeared though many still remained. For a moment he wondered what had happened to the ones that were gone. It seemed wrong that they would just be gone, they were like the tombstones of a time long gone.
“Gone but not forgotten, Harry. Do not worry, the stumps have turned to the earth to provide nutrients for the next generation. It is the cycle of life, the old gives way to the new.” Harry turned toward the voice to see the Lady and Lord walking toward him. They were both smiling, almost like proud parents. “It is just the land preparing for the new growth that will come now that the Wild Magic is free.”
Harry sighed, “That is good. Why am I back here? Did something go wrong?”
The Lord shook his head. “Nothing went wrong. If we hadn't needed your help before, tonight would have been the first time we would have met. The night after the Legacy ritual is when a young Fae goes through a coming of age ceremony, the Soul Walk. It helps a young Fae find out who and what they are.”
“How does it work?” Harry asked.
The Lord smiled and stepped up in front of Harry and reached out to touch him on the forehead. “Like this.”
The moment he touched Harry the young Fae's eyes rolled back and he slumped to the ground. The Lady moved to stand next to her Lord to watch over the young man.
Warmth. That was the first thing to register to Harry in the darkness. Then came the feeling of being held tight, which caused Harry to mildly panic and struggle, but soon a voice came from the dark that cause Harry to still.“Hush now little one, there there. You are fine, absolutely fine. Hush now.” The voice was one he recognized, one he had only heard in panic and fear begging for his life. His mother's voice continued, “Can you open your eyes my little one? Can you look at me?”
Harry struggled for a moment to do as he was asked but finally managed to flutter his eyes open to stare up at the fuzzy face of the woman who had gave her life to save him. Her beautiful green eyes stared down at him with love and pride and he felt tears gather in the corners of his eyes. She chuckled and gently wiped them away before they could have a chance to fall. “Don't cry Harry, I chose to do what I had to to save you. You are my pride and joy, my courageous little hero. There isn't a choice you have made that I would turn against you for, not even this newest one. You have always done what you could to keep the people you care about safe, and to do what is best for all. But there comes a time that you have to chose to make some choices for your own good. If you don't take care of yourself you can't look after those who depend on you to protect them. Though it saddens me to see how far it had to go for you to realizes it. I will always owe that owl of yours a debt of gratitude for snapping you to your senses, she was there to save you when I couldn't be.”
Harry tried to talk, to apologize for almost wasting her sacrifice, but all that came out was a whimper and baby babble. It was then he realized that he was a baby being held in his mother's arms and that he wouldn't be able to tell her everything he wanted to, that he needed to have her hear. He started to fuss and his mother smiled gently down at him and rocked him slowly to get him to settle down.
“Harry I was only given a short time to talk to you as part of your coming of age ceremony. But I wanted you to know I have been keeping track of you as you have grown and I do hear you if you wish to tell me things, though I wont be able to answer you back as easily.” She stroked her hand over his head leaned forward to kiss his forehead before contenting. “Now to business. Harry as you have been told every member of our family has had a family name that contain the family name of Lily. You are no exception. Your wizard name is Harry James Potter, but your Fae name is Lily of the Green. And before you fuss over the fact that it sounds girly, the Fae don't care about such things. Many strong and fierce warriors have come from our line and they all carried the name Lily proudly into battle. You are Lily of the Green last male hair of the Lily line, wear the name proudly and let nothing stand in your way, my son. You are already a great man and you can only become more so as you age.”
The edges of his sight began to darken and his mother glanced around before looking back down at him. “Our time is almost over, love. But one more thing before you have to leave. Don't forget to make time for love and family, my son. You never know when you will find someone who will make your heart pound and your palms sweat while bringing the thought of babies to mind. Do not close yourself off from the chance of happiness if it arises. And always know that I love you and so does your father though he could not be here. We will always love you.”
The darkness closed in once more as her voice faded away and though he wished he could have had longer with her the parting did not have the desperate edge to it that he though it might have had. There was a sense that she was with him even if he could not see her. Harry didn't know how long he wondered through the darkness before it changed. It was still dark, but it was lightened by the light of the full moon.
Cold night air rushed passed Harry's face as he hunched over the neck of his galloping horse, a quick glanced left and right let him check the placement of the hounds. They were all in place and they let him know that the sent was strong in their noses by baying and barking. Looking forward once more he watched the pray try to put on a burst of speed as the sounds alerted it to how close the Hunter was. Harry shifted his weight as the horse shifted to leap over an obstacle in their path. Turning he watched as the hounds flowed effortlessly over and around it and he smiled, the smile was grim and filled with cold mirth. The hounds had become much more graceful since the first hunt they went on and it filled him with a fierce pride for the beasts. Facing forward Harry once again focused on the pray running before them. The pray was tiring and slowing, it wouldn't be long now before the hounds over took the beast.
The hunt passed out of the trees into a field and the hounds surged forward unhindered. In moments they descended on the pray pulling it to the ground tearing at its flesh causing it to scream and struggle uselessly against them. Harry pulled the horse to a walk and slowly approached the writhing mass of hounds and listened as the beast begin to beg.
“Please help me! Please! Help!” The man's voice was wet and thick, you could tell that a lung had been punctured. Frightened eye's stared up at Harry from a blood covered face and Harry hardened his heart and his eyes.
“Did you grant mercy to your victims? When they screamed for mercy did you still your hand, or did you laugh and continue having your fun?” His voice was cold and unyielding. “You have been judged by the Wild Hunt and found guilty. Your punishment is death. At least face it with courage as you were a coward in everything else.”
Harry sat unmoving as the hounds finished tearing the child molester and murderer to pieces before one of the bigger hounds grabbed the man's soul and disappeared with it into the underworld to take him to face his eternal fate. As things settled down the darkness closed in and he found himself floating once more. The wait seemed shorter this time before something stirred in the darkness. A new feeling came over him, it was like a fresh breeze blew through the darkness bringing with it a sense of life and living things. As he was trying to analyze the breeze the darkness lightened and gave way to a sunny green forest.
Harry found himself walking between and around the trunks of trees that seemed to reach out to him as he passed. They entreated him to stop and listen to their tales, and though he would have liked to, he couldn't. There was a call coming from the distance that pulled him farther down the path to the last of the trees. Before him stood death and destruction, trees blackened and broken, lying where they fell. Looking at it all Harry felt his heart clench for the loss of life, both plant and animal. Lowering his head he cautiously sniffed the ashes and easily detected the trace amounts of fuel used to start the fire. Snorting to clear his nose he pawed the ground before raising his head and taking the first step into the blackened area.
As he walked farther into the black he felt the power drain from him into the parched earth which drank it up with an unquenchable thirst. And as the power spread from him and through the ground the first hints of green began to lighten the black on black color scheme. The green spread out behind him becoming thicker and more lush, moving from grasses to bushes to trees as all those who were lost were replaced by new growth. Harry didn't know how long he walked before the calling finally faded away and the pull on his power stopped. Turning to look at the renewed forest
Harry felt a sense of peace and rightness as the darkness closed in once more.
Harry opened his eyes and found himself sprawled out on the plain with the Lord and Lady looking down at him patiently. He stood up and once again faced the divine duo and waited for them to speak. He didn't have to wait long before the Lord spoke in a resounding voice. “You have gone through your Soul Walk and you have seen who you are, but one last thing needs to be done. You must acknowledge who you are and accept it in all its glory, both the light and dark sides of who you are.”The Lady stepped forward and met Harry's eyes with a serious look. “Who are you?”
The question was like a punch in the stomach and it stirred something deep inside him. It rose up like an untamed force calling out to be heard. “I am he who walks and guards the wild green places. I speak the language of the beasts and they tell me their secrets. Where I walk life follows in my footsteps. I am also he who leads the hunt, releasing the hounds that never lose the sent. I hunt those beyond salvation. I am Harry Potter-Black, the Lily in the Green, the Greenman, and the Hunter!”
Harry jerked awake with a shout and lurched toward the edge the bed, but in his hast he tipped off of it backwards. He landed with a thump on his back smashing the poor nightstand and getting his head tangled in the bed frame. It was as he struggled to free himself that he realized that he didn't have arms and hands, but instead he could see four long moss colored legs ending in sharp looking hooves flailing above him. He was just starting to panic when his door burst open and Remus, who had heard the crash from next door, rushed in only to come to a skidding halt.
“Harry?” Remus spoke softly and was answered with a moaning grunt. Moving forward Remus circled around the deer like animal his nephew had become so he could get a better look at what was wrong. He soon realized that the beast's antlers were both tangled in the bed and impaled in the floor. “Bloody hell pup, what the hell happened? Here hold still a moment and I'll get you free.”
Remus soon realized it was easier said then done and after much fiddling and tugging he was forced to resort to magically cutting the bed frame to free Harry's new head gear. With his head free Harry quickly struggled to his feet forcing Remus to quickly retreat to a corner to avoid being accidentally impaled by his nephew. On his feet Harry was so tall the tips of his antlers scraped gouges in the ceiling as he turned his head this way and that to get a better look at himself. What he saw was a large deer like beast with green/gray moss and grass like fir, four sturdy legs ending in razor sharp hooves. Walking over to the standing full length mirror Harry got his first look at his face and the large antlers that angled back along his body. Tangled in and hanging from his antlers was a green vine that seemed to move and grow under its own power as he watched. Remus stood there watching him finish his inspection before venturing to speak.
“Does this have to do with your Fae blood or should I be rushing you to the hospital?”
That was a very good question. Could this be an odd type of attack, or is it a new power manifesting? It was as he was contemplating this that his dream came back to him and he connected this form with his walk through the blackened forest. So this form is part of my Greenman powers. Does that mean I will be able to create forests like in my dream or was it just a form of symbolism like in fortune telling?
“Harry, should we head to the hospital?” Remus asked again with renewed concern.
Harry snorted at him, as he realized that he would not be able to speak until he turned back, and bumped him with his muzzle to reassure the older man. It was at this point that the pups who had watched the whole scene rushed forward to dart around their bonded's legs yapping up at him.
“Wow Harry your new form is so big!”
“Are you going to stay like this? How are you to ride Sheridan if you stay like this?”
Hearing the question Harry thought about it and remembered how he was able to hide his antlers back at the bank and decided to give it a try. Closing his eyes Harry concentrated, but nothing happened, and after a few minutes he gave up on that idea. Well, if that didn't work, maybe he could try doing what people who use the animagus spell did to get back to their human form. If he remembered right they focused on being human again and what it was like to be human. Harry focused on what having two arms and legs was like, and having to walk upright. But no matter what he focused on nothing happened.
The pups went on and on as Harry quietly began to panic as he realized that he didn't know how to turn back. The thought that he would be trapped in this new form after finally breaking free of those who would control him had him shouting a denial in his mind. Then suddenly there was a pulse from the spot next to his heart where the moon symbol's power had seemed to settle and a sense of calm filled him as he heard a distant female voice ask the that all important question. “Who are you?”
Who am I? Why do people keep asking me that? Isn't it obvious? I am Harry Potter-Black, the Lily in the Green, the Greenman, and the Hunter. I am the son of James Potter and Lily of the Fire. Godson to Sirius Black and pup to Remus Lupin. But Harry paused for a moment as a thought struck him. But that is not all I am is it. I am also the man who as an eleven year old faced Voldemort to save the Sorcerers stone, at twelve I fought and killed a basilisk to save Ginny, at thirteen I met Sirius and faced the dementors, fourteen saw me dealing with the triwizard tournament and Voldemort's return, and just this year Sirius's death. Each of those experiences have affected me and who I am. But there is also all the good times with my friends too. There are Christmas presents, and Halloween parties. Laughter and jokes, as well as the sadness. Even the every day experiences shape who I am.
As these thoughts ran through his mind they conjured up memories of his years at Hogwarts and even older memories of his time with the Dursleys. As he focused on each memory and considered how the experience changed him a subtle light began to radiate from his body. The deeper he delved into what had happened to make him who he was today the stronger the light grew, until the light grew so bright that his form inside was impossible to make out. Then with the sound like a snapping rubber band the light flashed out of existence leaving a panting Harry in his true form in its wake. Harry stood there for a moment meeting Remus's wide eyed stare before his legs buckled sending him crashing to the floor almost on top of young Daray who dodged out of the way just in the nick of time.
“Harry!” Remus rushed forward to Harry's side and went to his knees beside him. “Are you all right? What happened?!”
“I can only guess that that form is part of my inheritance and is connected to a large portion of my magic.” Harry stopped to rub his hands over his face and glance at the clock to see the time. He wasn't surprised to find it only barely three in the morning. “I also think that I may have been sent back in that form to help drive a message home, one that I have learned well.”
“Sent back? You didn't go anywhere, you were just asleep weren't you? What message did you learn?” To say that Remus was confused was an understatement.
Harry looked at the man he considered an uncle and took a deep breath and began to talk. “I think that I should start from the beginning of all this for me and explain what has been going on.”
So that is what he did. He started from when the nightmares began and told him everything that happened to get him to where he was now. The only thing he left out was the choice he had been given and the price that was paid, he told the older man everything else, even though some made him blush with shame. Remus sat quietly, growing pale as he listened to his pup tell him just how close he had come to killing himself and how it led to him making changes to see that he never again was pushed to that point. Remus felt his eyes prickle with tears even as his heart swelled with pride, his pup had hit bottom and instead of wallowing in it he looked up and began to pull himself up out of the hole. The pride was joined by awe when Harry spoke of his Soul Walk and speaking to the divine Lord and Lady.
When the boy finished talking Remus could not keep himself from reaching out and wrapping his arms around him. The thought that he had come so close to losing the last of his pack and he hadn't even known it was terrifying. He made a promise to himself that he would make sure to keep a close eye on Harry and never let him sink so far into depression again.
Harry let him hug him for a few moments before gently pulling away. He sent the older man a reassuring look before standing up and offering the older man a hand up. “Don't worry Remus, I have pulled myself away from the edge and am forging a new path for myself.”
Remus took his hand and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet. Once he was on his feet Harry released his hand to cover a huge yawn. It was still really early and the boy looked exhausted. “Why don't we both head back to bed to get a few more hours of sleep?” Harry nodded and watched Remus quickly repair the bed, floor, and ceiling before heading to the door where he paused and turned to Harry. “You have no idea how glad I am that you are still here and if you ever reach that point again do not hesitate to come to me Harry, no matter the time or place. I will listen and help in any way that I can. Now get some more sleep and I will see you in the morning.”
Harry smiled and closed the door behind his honorary uncle before heading once more to bed in the hopes that he would not wake up as a deer in the morning.
