Chapter 6
“You were an Auror before you want to prison, weren't you?” Hank asked, settling in his chair and getting comfortable. Black had asked for a meeting earlier than normal, so he was curious what the man wanted to know. He assumed there was something. And this question wasn't strictly the type he usually inquired about, but it was brought on by curiosity from what he learned about him.
“I was,” Sirius confirmed, wondering where the question came from. “Why?” He asked because he wanted to know.“Just curious,” Hank told him, sipping at his beer and tossing one of his chips to Yama, who caught it deftly. “With everything going on around here, you would think they would have asked you back. After all, you're trained.”“They did,” Sirius told him with a snort. After a sip of his beer, he explained, “I refused. No chance I'm going back to work for the people who allowed me to end up sent to prison without a trial or the most basic of investigations. The one who is the Minister now was my boss. He came to me personally when this mess grew worse and asked. Told him to shove off and just why.”“Don't blame you a bit,” Hank agreed with a soft chuckle. “Would have done the same myself.”Then he focused on the business at hand and asked, “Since you set up the meeting, I was curious what you wanted. Is there something specific?”“There is,” Sirius said with a nod, putting his beer bottle aside. “I'm going to say up front and be honest that what I'm going to ask about I heard from one of your clients. I won't say who to protect him, something you'll understand in a minute, but he was able to put it together.” Then he went on to relay a little of what Snape said. While Hank still had his normal mask in place, he added, shaking his head, “This one is helping the right side. He doesn't want it out there for obvious reasons.”“Understood,” Hank said. With how Sirius had phrased what was said, he already figured out it was Snape the man was referring to. If he read the signs right, he was also a spy. Most interesting. He then added, “What I know on the topic will stay with me and go no further.”“Good,” Sirius nodded. Snape was concerned about this part getting out, but if he put it out there, Hank was more apt to loosen up and give them more of what they needed.“What does this have to do with anything?” Hank asked, wondering what he wanted for that tidbit.“He told me and my best friend that Lucius Malfoy has a—well, he's in lust with you,” Sirius grinned, chuckling a tad.Unable to help himself, Hank grinned as well. “I'll confirm that's correct. Lusty Luci is trying. Not getting anywhere, mind you, but he's trying.”“What he told us, and it comes from him knowing the man for so long—the relationship stretches back to school, and what he's like, Lucius is probably trying to impress you with plenty of bits to entice you into his bed.” Sirius pressed on, wanting it all out there so Hank didn't shut down or end up angry over some of it. It wouldn't help if he grew upset then cut off the meetings.Hank thought over what was said trying to judge what he would say then came across with, “He does.” That short statement was all he said, though, leaving it there to see where Black wanted to go with the topic.“This next is a guess,” Sirius put out there to make it clear. “I think, and the other two agree, you get a great deal of information from Lucius.” Then he waited.Hank thought it over for a few seconds then just nodded.“I think you know where I'm going with this,” Sirius started, happy he hadn’t shut down yet. “I know you won't give up everything you know when it comes to this, but we need the important stuff. Just couch it in such a way we can make it look like it came from somewhere else. And if you hear something big is coming to let us know.”“It'll cost you,” Hank told him honestly. He had no problem giving up most of what Luci told him since the man liked to run his mouth. He was sure he wasn't the only one Lucius did so with. It isn't like he felt any kind of loyalty to the man either. He was well aware what Lucius, and his kind, were like. The second he managed to get what he wanted, he would drop him. Either that or put in him such a position he could get plenty out of it.“More than willing to give up what you need as long as it's like what we've been doing,” Sirius told him with a nod.“We can work something out then,” Hank smirked, settling back.“Is there anything in the works now, something big, you think we need to know about?” Sirius asked, relaxing a tad himself. Like the others, he was worried pressing too much would have Hank backing away.“He mentions big plans for whatever, but is so vague about them I don't think it's much beyond the planning stage or is just him blowing smoke to sound good,” Hank told him honestly. “He likes to make himself sound plenty important to impress me. From what I know of him, he is and doesn't really need to make it sound better, but he does.”“His son is the same way,” Sirius snorted, grinning a tad. “Lucius has plenty of power, he doesn't need to make himself sound better.”“My understanding on the matter,” Hank nodded. “He tries. I think when he realizes I won't bite, he'll start giving details. We'll see. It's usually the way this sort of bit goes.”“I take it you aren't?” Sirius said, though it was more rhetoric since the man didn't seem like the sort who would.“No chance,” Hank replied, rolling his eyes. “People like Lusty Luci are dangerous to play with. You're in the middle of a nightmare before you know it if you allow them to talk you into such matters. I might not lean to either side in this mess, but I won't help the other side and want no part of them. If I accepted, I'm sure I'd end up pulled into that side in one way or another.”“Very true,” Sirius agreed, pleased Hank was the sort who understood such matters. Plenty didn't then ended up in a world of shit. Then he added, sobering up, “Be careful with him. Lucius is the type who will get what he wants and he doesn't care how. If this bit doesn't work, he'll try another way, including coercion.”“He can try,” Hank snorted, giving a feral grin. “Won't work with me. Whatever he wants to pull out to force me in that direction I can counter with plenty that would land him in a dung heap the size of a mountain. And I have no problem doing so.”“Just protect yourself,” Sirius told him. Then he asked, just out of curiosity so he knew what he was dealing with, “Is that your leaning or is he just trying because it isn't?”“He would try no matter what,” Hank told him with a chuckle. “However, I lean that way when I feel like it.” He then left it there. Besides, it gave him an opening to ask Sirius the same. “How about you? Tit for tat, remember?”“I remember,” Sirius nodded. “It's the same for me,” he admitted honestly. If he gave up plenty of this type of information, the more Hank might relax and give up as well.Hank nodded at what was said, pleased. Might be a way to wiggle around and push for what he wanted since this was the case. Good. “Don't worry about me,” he reiterated. “Whatever Luci wants to pull won't work. I've played that game before with people and know my way around it. He'll probably grow bored and move on before it gets there.”“I don't know,” Sirius told him doubtfully, shaking his head. “Lucius isn't used to not getting what he wants and might see it as a challenge. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard of someone turning him down before.” Then he asked, “What does he see you for anyway?”“The ones I told you about aren't the only ones who like certain recreational potions,” Hank chuckled, looking amused. “He just likes a different kind.”“Figures,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “I'm sure Cissy doesn't know about it either.”“Who?” Hank asked, decidedly curious.“Narcissa, his wife,” Sirius explained. “My cousin, actually.”“Interesting,” Hank said honestly, filing it away for later use.“I'm the black sheep,” Sirius told him proudly, a big grin on his face. “We don't associate.”“I didn't think you would with their leanings,” Hank replied, grinning a tad.“Let me ask this,” Hank started, leaning forward a bit. “I keep hearing the Order is plenty divided and not nearly as effective as it was during the last war. Is it true? If it is, why?” This he was curious about.“It's true,” Sirius groused, looking dour. “It's—well, it's a long story. Let's say Albus, despite all he did during the last war, screwed himself with some of his stunts and plotting.” He gave the most basic of rundowns of what happened with James, Lily and Harry then pressed on. When he finished, he added, “Most in the Order don't actually trust him anymore. They're helping because it's the right thing and is needed, but the faith they had in him just isn't there. And it's growing worse. The longer this drags on, the worse it gets.”The name Harry Potter set off something in Hank, making his brow furrow. He wasn't sure what it was or the why, but it was there. It might have been because the name was famous here, at least that's how it sounded coming from Sirius, but he didn't know. It was one he would add to his notes to look into when he went home. Other bits were triggering parts as well. If this was all well known, he could look into it and find what he wanted to know. “This Harry Potter was your godson then?” He asked to clarify.“He is,” Sirius confirmed with a sigh. “As far as we know he's alive, just not what happened. We're trying to find out.”“And the prophecy bit—it divided things?” Hank then asked, curious about it.“You have no idea,” Sirius grumbled, looking thunderous. “We think Albus knew all along what it meant, or was leaning there, even back in the first war when he heard it. He then planned for so much. What he didn't count on was what happened. We don't know what happened to Harry or when he vanished. Since then, it was leaked out. When we all heard what it said and found out what it meant, it divided the Order plenty. Then came the general distrust of anything he says because of what he plotted and planned for so long, hiding it from all of us.”“It would do it for me,” Hank said honestly, petting Yama when he came over and perched on the arm of his chair to take a drink of his beer.“That bird is damned scary,” Sirius chuckled, watching it drink the beer.“He is,” Hank grinned malevolently. “He's also deadly. Unlike owls and whatever, he's Magical. The Thunderbird is an old creature, one who is a protector. He's also half turkey vulture, what people call a buzzard. I did him a favor once when I was young and he took over protecting me since then. He's nothing to trifle with and will gut you, after he eats your eyes, then rip you apart if you try anything. Better than any bodyguard there is, honestly.”“Yeah, well, I wouldn't want to tangle with him,” Sirius admitted, shivering at bit at what was described.“As long as you don't mess with me or try anything foolish, you're fine,” Hank chuckled, stroking Yama's back.“Dung still seems plenty loyal to the old man,” Hank observed, changing back to the topic.“Albus helps Dung wiggle himself out of plenty of trouble,” Sirius snorted, rolling his eyes. “Dung has contacts, like you, Albus needs to help. Well, honestly, we all need. I get the point there,” he admitted with a shrug. “In times like these, you sometimes need contacts and information you can't get normal ways.”“Very true,” Hank conceded, feeding Yama more of his chips.Sirius then pressed on with some more pointed questions about what Lucius had spouted, the same with what he might know on others which could help. Hank would give answers, though he was short with some of them when it came to the information, probably to keep some to himself for now. Like had gone on since they started meeting, he gave up plenty in return as well, in all kinds of areas. Though still wary about Hank and his motives at times, he was growing more comfortable with the man, thus at ease with some of it. He'd manage and deal. In some ways, he liked the talks as he didn't have to worry about so much. And, well, he liked Hank as well. His approach was rather refreshing since he had to deal with so much when it came to plots, plans and schemes. It was nice to deal with someone who you knew just who they were and their motives.
“You were right, Snape; he's getting the information from Lucius, a bunch of it, if I read the signals right,” Sirius told him and Remus. They were in one of the parlors with a ward up in case anyone came over. With a glance at Snape, he added, “And for the reason you said.”
“I thought as much,” Severus nodded, crossing his arms over his chest and giving a pleased nod. “Did he give up any information on them we can use?”“Some, not a lot,” Sirius admitted with a shake of his head. Before the two could ask, he added, “And I think it's because he doesn't know anything bigger yet.” He then relayed what Hank said. When he finished, seeing the two nod, he added, “He did agree anything huge or we need warned about, he'll give up. It'll just be in such a way it'll look like we heard it elsewhere. The only thing he said was the standard; that it'll cost me. I don't have issues with the price since all he wants is information.”“Let me ask this: what kind of information has he wanted? Anything you take issue with?” Remus inquired, curious. Sirius wasn't uptight after returning from the meetings, so he didn't assume it was anything horrible, but he wanted to know.“Mostly it's about the war and some history,” Sirius started. “This time he asked about dissension in the Order and those bits. There were a couple personal bits about me, but nothing I have issues giving up. I think he just wants an idea of the whole mess for his own whatever, probably to stay safe.” Then he added, glancing between the two, “And he made it damned clear he wants nothing at all to do with the other side. There was no beating around the bush there. My thought is he'll do business with them because it's money and garners him information, but won't dance elsewhere.”“Did you warn him about what Lucius is like?” Snape asked. As the man could pass them plenty of information, he didn't want him caught in the middle or end up in trouble then helping the other side. He was well aware Hank probably had enough information on their side to give the Dark Lord enough of an advantage to win the war.“I started to, but it wasn't needed,” Sirius assured him. “He knows and laid it out in a way I realized he did, probably more that I would have given him. My assumption, from the way it was phrased, he's either had it happen to him before with people trying or seen it enough to stay wary. He's good and safe there.” With a snort, he grinned, adding, “And I doubt that damned bird of his would allow it. He told me just what it would do to someone and if they're smart, they'll steer real clear of Yama.”“Very true,” Severus nodded, looking sour. “It's intimidating enough to look at and I doubt those looks are for show. What breed is it? Did he say? I'm more curious than anything else.”“Thunderbird and turkey vulture or it's also called North American buzzard, one of the two. Evil, malevolent looking thing, it is,” Sirius told them, shaking his head. “He said he's a protector, so the bird is probably like a bodyguard of some sort. Either way, if you're smart, you aren't going to tangle with it. Dung told me normal spells don't work on it either before the first meeting.”“I'm curious as I've not heard of a Thunderbird other than the name, so I'll look it up,” Remus mused, rubbing his chin. “Let me see what I can find.”“He did say it's Magical,” Sirius added for his old friend. “I'll be interested to hear what it can do.”“Right, other than whatever crops up, what do you two think I need to cover with him at the next meeting?” Sirius asked, settling back and sipping his drink. “We're doing this once a week, but he told me he doesn't care if it's more as long as he doesn't have plans.”“I have a couple bits I've picked up from Death Eaters you might want to ask about,” Severus told him. Then he relayed what he heard and explained how he thought it might be related. If Hank knew any more, it would be most helpful.
Later that night, just before they intended to go to bed, Sirius and Remus were seated in front of the fire in the main parlor, relaxing and talking. This was their normal routine as it helped them fall asleep and they weren't worried someone would come over, unless it was an emergency, and overhear anything.
It had been a busy night for them, but not for the Order. Bill had come over while Snape was here and agreed to the scheme about the Dursleys to see what they could manage to find out. They were also going to look into what was going on with them now so they might have a way to go about this without drawing suspicion. Good. He and Remus had discussed that bit and were pressing on to Hank.“I'll admit I actually like talking to him,” Sirius told his old friend with a shrug. “Not only do I learn plenty we have no other way of finding out, but there's something about him I'm attracted to. Not sure why, as he's generally not my type and is a little too young for me, but it's there.”“How old is he?” Remus asked, curious. Dung had told them how old he thought he was, but he wasn't sure.“Twenty-three,” Sirius said. “He's just completely different from like Ron and Hermione. Hell, he's more mature than most we know, including us.” He added with a snort and chuckle, grinning as he did. “Probably because of what his life was like,” he tossed out there, sobering up.“He sounds like a dangerous one, Sirius,” Remus cautioned, shaking his head.“Won't argue that point because he is,” Sirius told him with a nod. “Not sure what it is, but I like him. I know to stay wary, you don't have to say it, but was wondering about giving it a try to see what happens. He admitted he likes blokes. The way it was worded sounds like he means bisexual.”“While he sounds plenty dangerous, he might be less than most others anymore, especially if he refuses to take a side in this mess,” Remus told him with a sigh. “With you not really wanting anything permanent, it might work.”“Just wanting some fun,” Sirius admitted. “He doesn't seem like the sort to want to settle down either. Some of what he's said leans me to thinking he's not back here for the duration, just for a time then moving on.”“If you do give it a shot, make sure to keep it quiet,” Remus schooled. “If Lucius is chasing him, he won't like competition. Especially if it's from our side and you're involved. He might take it in his head to cause all sorts of problems for you to eliminate you from the race.”“There is that,” Sirius conceded with a groan, leaning back in his chair. “He's known for it, after all. Pulled that shit back in school with plenty when it came to Narcissa. Yeah, I'll watch my arse if it gets that far. Hell, not sure if Hank would be interested, to tell the truth. Not sure of his leanings or if he even has someone. I'll have to find out before I put out feelers. Then I'll go from there.”“We don't want this fount of information to dry up, so stay alert and don't offend him,” Remus cautioned. “In this sort of circumstance, we need the information more than you need to get a leg over, Sirius.”“No argument there either,” Sirius assured him, “I know, don't worry. We'll see. Not sure how to even approach him about the matter. He's not like others I've dealt with. We won't even get into my age on the whole matter. As far as I know, he might be like so many others his age and turn his nose up because I'm so much older. The relationship we're building now isn't the sort that part factors into, so I'm clueless. It's not like we're friends and can press on from there.”“I won't say anything about the relationship as Tonks isn't much older than he is, just to caution you to stay on your toes. He's not like ones we know. You were around that sort in prison, so you know what they're like,” Remus sighed, knowing the last part was touchy, but wanted it out there.“I know, trust me,” Sirius grumbled, leaning back and smoothing down his whiskers. “Part of why I'm unsure about this whole bit. He's not the full out criminal kind like Dung, but he dances close to the line and can most assuredly see over it as he deals with ones on the other side. I'll stay cautious, don't worry.”“Just go with your gut. It's served you well plenty of times over the years,” Remus told him.“I always listen to it,” Sirius agreed. Then, downing the last of his beer, he groaned and said, “I'm hitting the hay. Completely beat, honestly.” Hearing Remus agree, he stood and made his way up the stairs. While he waited to fall asleep, he would think about how to approach Hank on the personal part. It was an area he'd manage, he just wasn't sure how yet.
