“Where do you think she will be?”
“At our usual table in the back corner. It has the nicest chairs.”
“I’ve never been in the library long enough to care about how nice my chair feels.”
“Well then you must not be Rose Weasley.”
Albus and Scorpius walked together through the Library in search of Rose. They had decided that it was high time to let her know what was going on. The short period of time when they could sneak away without being questioned was coming to an end. Scorpius was running out of excuses to skip out on homework with Rose. Albus on the other hand had offered no excuses to his family when he missed their weekly outings to go on dates with Scorpius. He did however fear that, though their shared connection with Rose, the family would put together that they were both missing at the same time.
“Do you think she will tell the rest of your family?” Scorpius asked.
“She will probably just tell us that we have to tell them too.” Albus said with a shrug.
“Wait, Albus.” Scorpius held the other boy by the arm and drug him into a deserted row of books. “I’m such an idiot. I can’t believe I waited until now to have this conversation will you. I mean, I don’t even know how your family is going feel about us. I’m usually so in the moment when you are around that-“
“That you just forget about everything else.” Albus finished for him. “I know Scorpius, I feel the same way.” He leaned in and kissed Scorpius. “I don’t know how they are going to take it. I already broke the mold by being put into Slytherin. I’m pretty sure that I am officially the black sheep.”
“But Alby, it’s not like you are just going to tell them that you are sneaking around with a boy.” Scorpius said hanging his head. “You are going to tell them that you are sneaking around with me! Scorpius Malfoy, the son of traitor deatheater Draco Malfoy.”
“I know Scorpius, and I understand that feeling.” Albus said as he lifted Scorpius’s face upwards towards his own with his index finger. “My dad is Harry Potter. I look just like him, I sound like him, I even fly like him. I know what it is like to feel defined by what your dad did over twenty years ago. But I’m not him, you are not your dad. We are just ourselves. We are just two people trying to figure out our feelings for each other.”
“Do you really feel that way?”
“Yes. It’s my life. I’m going to do what I want, regardless of what my dad did.” Albus stated firmly.
“So that’s how you ended up in Slytherin.” Said Scorpius with a half-smile.
“Come on, let’s go find my cousin.”
“Oh Scor!” Rose gasped, both of her hands going to cover her heart as though it would fall out of her chest. “I’m so sorry! I had no idea that was going on! I thought you were just tutoring him.” Tears began to form in the corners of her eyes. “It’s all my fault, I should have just tutored him myself. He would not have been able to get to you.”
“Rose, no, it’s not your fault. I’m glad that it was me. He would have just done the same to you.” Scorpius said, pulling tissues from his bag and handing them to Rose. Albus draped his arm over her shoulders in a gesture of comfort.
“Why did you wait so long to tell me?”
“Well, there have been some other things going on.” Scorpius admitted guiltily as his eyes found Albus’s.
“Vincent did more to you?”
“Uh no…” Scorpius began but was soon at a loss for words.
“What then?”
“Rose, we have something to tell you.” Albus said slowly.
“Okay, well then tell me.” She retorted.
“I heard Vince talking about what he did to Scorpius. He was telling the other chasers before the game.” Albus admitted. “I went to find Scorpius after the game to see if he was alright.”
“That was really nice of you Al.” Rose said with a smile as her eyes continued to leak tears.
“There’s more.” Scorpius said nervously taking her hand.
“I found him in the bathroom.” Albus said, his heart beating faster as he got closer to the point of no return. “We kissed.”
“What?” Rose responded. She was rarely confused, but it sounded as though her cousin had just admitted to kissing her best friend.
“Scorpius and I, we um, kind of made out for a little bit.”
“Ah…wait? What are you saying?” She said looking quickly between the both of them, searching for whatever she had missed. “Albus. You’re gay?” She asked in disbelief.
“I-, I’m not sure. I’m still trying to figure it all out.” He admitted with his usual honesty.
“Trying to figure it out?” She questioned. “But you were all over Misty Winters last year!”
“Yeah I know, but I have been going on dates with Scor. We have been having a really good time together.”
Rose looked questioningly at Scorpius. “It’s true Rose. We have been sneaking around for about a month now.”
“Albus, you mean to tell me that you are using my best friend to find out if you are gay?” She said angrily, facing her cousin.
This was not the reaction Albus was expecting after admitting that he had been snogging Scorpius Malfoy. She was mad at him, not shocked or discussed, mad. “I’m not using him for sex, Rose! We go out on dates and have fun. I’m not taking him to a bathroom and having my way with him!”
She looked at Scorpius, demanding the truth. “He is being honest Rose. We just go on dates, we do have a lot of fun doing stupid things. Sometimes things happen, but when they do it’s not forced.” He answered.
“How many times have you gone out?”
“About six or seven times now.”
“Six or seven… and you are just now telling me!?” She exclaimed. “But that is even beyond the point! You went out that many times and things happened but you still have not figured out your feelings Albus?”
“Rose, I’m sorry we waited so long. It’s just that-“ Scorpius began to apologize but Rose interrupted him.
“You loved Mandy Fisher after snogging her for one week!” Rose said, her gaze burning into Albus. “You spend a month with Scorpius and you can’t even call him your boyfriend?”
“Rose, it’s okay!” Scorpius pleaded. “He has never been with a boy before, he just was not sure about his feelings. It is not a crime to be confused.”
“And what if it turns out that you don’t like boys, Albus?” She said in a low and menacing voice. “Were you just going to throw him to the side like Vincent did?”
“Rose, I’m nothing like Vincent!” Albus responded angrily. “I care about Scor. When I heard Vince saying all that stuff in the locker room I wanted to hurt him for hurting Scor. That’s why I went to find him after the game. I needed to know he was okay. I broke my heart to see him crying. I needed to hold him…” He trailed off when he realized that both Scorpius and Rose were looking at him, open mouthed and amazed.
“I think you know exactly how you feel.” Rose stated simply, all traces of anger vanishing.
Instantly Albus knew she was right. He looked at the gorgeous blonde sitting before him. He found Scorpius to be extremely attractive. However there was so much more he felt for him beyond sexual desire. In the past few weeks, he had become closer to Scorpius than he had to any of his past girlfriends. Their connection was undeniable.
“I don’t know if I’m gay.” Albus said looking at Scorpius. Honestly began to flow from him in a steady stream. “But I know I want to be with you. I want more than someone to go on dates with.”
“Well Albus, you should probably ask.” Rose told him with a smile.
“Scorpius, will you be my boyfriend?”
“Obviously.”
