Chapter Seven-The Note
Harry picked up the note and read the first line out loud to the other three.
“To Misters H. Potter and R. Weasley and Misses H. Granger and D. Gale. On the occasion of the termination my Headmastership:”
The four looked at each other with fear and confusion, even Dorothy knew this was bad. Harry kept reading.
“I regret to inform you that High Inquisitor Dolores Umbridge has assumed my post and is now Headmistress of Hogwarts. I have been forced to accelerate plans with the Order.”
The letter went on, now written directly to Dot.
“Dorothy, I apologize for your current situation, in which you were placed by factors outside my control. Unfortunately you cannot stay at Hogwarts. Without my protection as Headmaster, I’m afraid Hogwarts is too dangerous a place for you to remain. You must leave immediately. Hagrid will help you. On a lighter note, I understand you all had nice History of Magic class today. The story of Ephelba, one of my favorites!
Regards, Albus Dumbledore”
“What the bloody hell is that supposed to mean?” asked Ron loudly.
“I don’t know,” Hermione responded, looking frightenedly at Dot.
“I know what is means,” Dot stated calmly. “It means I have to go.”
The next few hours were filled with anxious planning and packing. Harry, Ron and Hermione quickly agreed that they couldn’t let Dot leave by herself, but that she couldn’t stay either. Dumbledore had only told Dot that Hagrid would help her escape; he hadn’t mentioned the other three leaving Hogwarts at all, perhaps he intended for them to stay. So, as all four friends quietly walked down the hill to Hagrid’s hut, packs on their backs, barely covered by the invisibility cloak, they hoped desperately that he would let them stay together.
It was dusk by the time they were packed and had made their way to the hut. Harry knocked softly, Fang started barking, and they could hear Hagrid quieting him within. The door opened and Hagrid looked out onto his apparently deserted stoop, but he received enough late night visits under the invisibility cloak to know it was them. He stepped out of the way and they walked inside, removing the cloak as Hagrid shut the door.
“She’s not going without us!” shouted Hermione, her voice surprisingly loud inside the small room. “You can’t take Dorothy away Hagrid, I won’t let you.” Hermione began to weep quietly. Ron and Harry shared a glance, understanding how important Dot was to her.
Harry tried to help convince Hagrid. “Look, if Dumbledore’s not Headmaster anymore, then the school isn’t safe for any of us. Fudge refuses to accept that Voldemort is back and now the Ministry runs Hogwarts. If we don’t leave I’ll wind up getting expelled and you’ll find yourself in Azkaban, Hagrid!”
“Whoa, easy,” soothed Hagrid. “You lot have really got yourselves worked up and I ain’t even told you how it’s gonna be yet. Just lemme breathe for a moment.” Harry and Hermione realized how aggressively they were acting and laughed. After only a few weeks, both their feelings for Dot were powerful.
Hagrid took the moment to gather his thoughts, then went on.
“Dumbledore already told me I’m to transport all of ya to headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix tonight. He said you lot wouldn’t take kindly to being split up. Boy, was he right.” They all laughed.
Once night had fully fallen, Hagrid led the students into the forest, to a clearing where his motorbike was parked. There were also three brooms with the bike, and they all mounted up, Hagrid on his bike with Dot in the sidecar and Harry, Ron and Hermione on brooms. Hermione was least comfortable on a broom and even though it was long trip to #12 Grimmauld place, she kept pace with the others. Once they were all inside the Black family home a feeling of safety washed over them, despite the off-putting décor.
