CHAPTER SEVEN: Showers and Conversations
Severus was already naked and waiting for Sirius in the shower when the other arrived. Dropping his bath robe on the sink. Having worn nothing beneath it. They were for all intensive purposes alone. He didn't miss the spell that Severus had cast to make the bathroom soundproof. Sirius cast a locking charm on the door and stepped under the water. Sirius froze at the sight before him. He still couldn't believe this was real. That everything had changed in so short a time. Here he was standing in the shower with Severus in the light. Something Sirius knew was a huge step for Severus.
He stared openly at his partner. Severus was thin, but he had a nice build. Lean muscles. Tall and intimidating. It was stunning to see the soft smile curving his lips and that light dancing in his eyes. That was only ever there when Severus looked at him. His eyes weren't cold distant orbs, but soft gentle blackness that welcomed him. The more Sirius learned about this mysterious man, the more he fell in love.
Severus was looking at Sirius with critical eyes. Sirius didn't notice of course being fat too preoccupied looking at his lover. Drinking in every place of his features, the lean muscular build, the long black hair that really wasn't greasy even if it looked like it.
Severus could see the changes in Sirius since they had first touched. Even in the darkness of the den he had been able so see enough to know that Sirius had been nearly skeletal. The once striking figure the boy had been was ravaged by prison and hardship. In so many ways Severus could relate to that. Though most of his scars were not physical. His physical scars were from a distant past. Now the man had put on weight. His musculature had begun to develop again. His long hair was no longer stringy and untamed. It was long, slightly curly, tied at the base of his neck. His eyes were haunted, but hidden beneath all that was a life and vitality that infected Severus. When they had first lain in bed together Severus had watched the years drift away from the haunted features and seen the man he should have been. The man Sirius would have been had he not suffered through Azkaban.
Sirius's hand gently entwined in Severus's hair. His soft words were spoke inches from his lips. "What's on you mind Sev?"
"You," came the whispered reply. Before their lips met in a soft chaste kiss that left both wanting more. Severus drew his arms tightly around Sirius drawing him close. Until both their bodies were pressed tightly together. His lips capturing Sirius's again. His tongue lightly brushing against those lips. Pressing them apart so that he could intensify the kiss. Severus and Sirius stood like that for several long moments kissing under the warm water. Entwined in a perfect moment. These little moments meant more to Severus then Sirius would ever know. At least that is what Severus thought. Little did he know that Sirius treasured that most of all about Severus. The unconditional love the man gave. It had always astounded Sirius from the first moment they had been together. Severus didn't just give a part. He didn't dip a toe in the pond. He leapt blinding in. He was an all or nothing guy. He gave himself so fully that it was a wonder he was never completely shattered. That's what never surprised Sirius about how devastated Severus was and is about Lily's death. Sirius had never known that kind of love before he met Severus and now there is nothing he wouldn't do for it. Unfortunately it also made Sirius aware of just how careful he had to be. One wrong move, one wrong word and he could shatter Severus. Completely and utterly destroy him. That notion terrified Sirius.
Sirius did not have a reputation for forethought. He acted blindly. He had paid dearly for it in the past. Many others had as well. Now the most important person to him could be destroyed in more ways then one by his thoughtless actions. Sirius was well aware that Severus was a spy. That he returned time and time again to the dark lord of his. That he came back a little more broken each time. Sirius had seen the broken soul hiding behind the masks with every return.
Sirius shuddered at the memories. The movement didn't go unnoticed by Severus. He looked down breaking their kiss. His words were like a caress as he spoke so softly. "What are you thinking of?"
"You," Sirius whispered back, but Severus could see that was not all there was to it. He frowned gazing into his partners eyes.
"What exactly about me?" Severus asked, his voice neutral, but his eyes worried and concerned.
"What he does to you," Sirius admitted looking down. Knowing that he'd just ruined the moment. A hand closed over his cheek and fingers lifted his chin. Sirius was forced to meet Severus's haunted gaze. Ghosts of a truly unknown pain haunted those eyes. Yes worry and concern darkened the expression.
"The Dark Lord has to be stopped. I do what is necessary to see that end come to pass," Severus said. The unspoken words hanging behind them: I do what I have to to pay for what i've done.
"It shouldn't be necessary. It shouldn't be done. You've done enough already, Severus you've paid more then enough. When will it be enough?" Sirius said his voice growing louder.
"Shh. It's ok," Severus whispers gently. Pulling Sirius tighter to himself again. Pressing his partners head into his shoulder. Feeling the warm breath across his chest. The warm water trickling across his back. The words spoken so passionately from Sirius warming his heart in ways he'd thought impossible.
"No it's not," Sirius hissed. Shaking his head. Tears mingling with the water as he clings to Severus. "I don't want to loose you."
"Is that what you fear?" Severus asked concerned. Truly surprised and yet touched.
"More then anything," Sirius admits. Now truly crying.
"I would die for you Siri," Severus whispers. Continuing softly. "I would die for Harry as well. For the Order and the cause. I gave Albus my word that I would do all in my power to bring down the Dark Lord from within. I spy for Albus and I am happy to risk my life. So long as I know I have you to return to I can do this. More then ever before, because now I have a reason to life. Now I don't fight just for a mistake I have tried to atone for all my life. I fight for my family. Something I never thought to have."
"Would you life for me Severus? Do not die for me, but live," Sirius whispered. "I could not bear for you to die."
"I do live, because of you Siri," Severus whispers softly kissing the top of Sirius head. Those words echo in Sirius's mind. What Severus called them. Family. It hits Sirius so hard he is silent as they hold each other for long moments. Before they begin to wash. Hands never wanting to let the other go. Touching every inch of each other. The action one of love and gentleness. Not an act of sex, but an action of claiming. Admitting that they belong one to another.
As both man dressed after their shower it is Sirius that breaks the comfortable silence that has fallen. His hand coming to rest on Severus's left arm. Right over his mark. The gesture one of purpose and determination. The touch one of love and care. Severus cannot look away from that gentle touch. On the most hated mark he bears.
"You really think of me and Harry as your family?" Sirius asks softly.
"You are my partner. I will never leave you, never stop loving and never could I forsake you. Harry is your godchild, therefore he is mine as well. So yes. You are both my family. Just as Lucius, Draco and Narcissa are family," the words are spoken softly. Something Sirius had never realized about Severus before. He did not speak of anyone tied to him by blood, but people he had chosen to protect. Even die for. Those are the people Severus called family. Sirius had known that Lucius and Severus where good friends and that Draco was his godchild. That Severus would willing put aside his differences with James and love Harry as he does Draco. That spoke volumes to Sirius of what kind of man Severus was. Just how wrong he and James had been. Sirius did not deserve this man, he thought. Sirius thought that Albus did not deserve his loyalty. So rare were people like Severus. It broke Sirius's heart to know no one trusted him, because he hid this part of himself away.
In that moment Sirius made a decision. He would not allow Severus to hide any long. He would not allow the order to doubt him. Severus would have the support of friends. He would know that he was not alone. It was time they all saw it. Including his stubborn Slytherin partner. Sirius grinned broadly at Severus startling the other who instantly pale.
"Please tell me you are not planning something?" Severus asks. Truly frightened by that smile on Sirius's face. The man is clearly planning something and he just know it'll be horrible. Wondering what fresh hell Sirius is planning for his life.
"Oh yes I am," Sirius grinned even broader and Severus drew back. A spark of fear in his gaze. "Don't look so frightened. I'm just going to kick some stupid people in the ass and hex a few well deserved posteriors that's all."
"That makes about as much sense as I'd expect a flee bitten mutt could make," Severus said teasingly.
"Well I can't expect the overgrown dungeon bat to understand now can I?" Sirius teased back. The two laughed and almost gave Molly a heart attack at the sound. They had just opened the washroom door and stepped out. The laughter that rebounded around the hall made Molly freeze and stare open mouth. Her hand pressed to her chest. She had never seen Severus smile in her life. Let alone hear him laugh.
"Molly you look like you've seen a ghost," Sirius said as his laughter died. Severus just stopped laughing. His face turning to stone. Emotions vanishing.
"You can actually laugh?" Molly asked in her shocked state.
"I am human," Severus confirmed. Cold and distant once more.
"Sev! Don't do that!" Sirius grumbled poking him in the ribs. Severus growled warningly. So Sirius just drew himself up and kissed him. Completely startling Severus with his response. As the kiss deepened Severus relaxed. His arms coming around Sirius and a gentle smile tugged his lips. Sirius broke the kiss and grinned. "Much better."
"So I am to be kissed ever time I scowl?" Severus asked Sirius with a raised eyebrow. The smile didn't vanish from his lips this time however.
"I have to say, I like it better when you smile," Molly said reminding them she was there. She seemed to have regained her composure.
"I did not think you welcomed my presence in any state," Severus replied. His voice neutral. It was evident to Sirius that he was concealing his emotion. His face had become his usual mask. How he could convince the stubborn man to smile was beyond him. Severus smiled easily enough when they were alone. Then it dawned on him. Severus's choice of words. Molly looked hurt and bewildered.
"Oh Sev," Sirius whispered. Having understood completely now why Severus had withdrawn again. "Molly trusts you, just as I do Sev. Give her a chance. Surely you can find it in yourself to give her a chance."
"Of course I trust you!" Molly said indignantly. "I wouldn't allow you around my children if I didn't! Fred and George have told me, what you've done for them. How you're the reason we have a stocked potions cupboard at home. How you allow them to experiment in your classroom after classes and watch over them. How could you even think I wouldn't trust you or welcome your presence as you call it. Or Severus. I've always wished you would stay for meals! Please join us for breakfast! Arthur is here briefly before he leaves for work and Remus is already downstairs. I was just coming to see if Sirius was awake."
"You want me down there with you?" Severus asked slowly. He was so confused by her words. He'd always believed none of them trusted him. Not that he would blame them. He was a Death Eater. He was the spy. No one knew what made Dumbledore trust him. Why should they trust him?
"Of course I do dear! Arthur would be delighted to have you join us! As would Remus. I'm certain Sirius would be quite upset if you didn't," Molly said. Doing yet another thing he'd never expected. She threw her arm around him and gave him a gentle push towards the stairs. He stiffened as he always did with physical contact. Though Sirius held his hand tightly. He gave a curt nod and followed Sirius down into the crowded kitchen. Or what felt to him like a crowd.
As he walked through the door and Molly hurried off to the stove to finish up. Remus and Arthur didn't look up from their conversation. A strange conversation about plugs of all things. Severus frowned why was Arthur so confused.
"A plug allows the Muggles to use electricity Arthur," Severus said joining the conversation as Remus struggled to explain this.
"But how does it work?" Arthur wondered.
"I'll have to show you one of these days, but it's quite simple. The plug completes the circuit and thus when you turn on the appliance it does whatever it is that it's designed to do," Severus explained.
"How do you know so much about Muggle plugs?" Remus asked curious.
"I grew up in a Muggle home," Severus responded. Not elaborating on the fact his father was a Muggle. It was simply better to avoid Tobias at all cost.
