Although rare, a Bond can, of course, be rejected. Usually the grounds given cover a lack of mutual interests or one of the pair wanting to Bond with another. Rejection of a claim should never be undertaken lightly; especially after having fledged, as this breaks the connection fully and only the one doing the rejecting can re-establish it. Should the one who made the original claim attempt to do so, various unpleasant effects have been noted from loss of wings, to even death.
Veela textbook (for Veela use only) on Bonding
The house without Severus in it felt suddenly too quiet and too large for Harry. Neither of his friends had asked about his fight with Snape, nor what had started it, for which he was very grateful as he felt his face flaming at the abandoned way he had thrown himself at the older man. Seeing how easily he had been rejected made Harry feel vindicated that Snape had never really wanted him, and that all this Bonding business had been some weird scheme to control Harry. The Veela in him knew it was nonsense and was in agony missing his Bond-Mate. But, now, Severus wasn't his Bond-Mate. He had rejected the claim, and it would not be re-made.
He knew, or the Veela part of him knew, that he had to be the one to fix this. He couldn't wait for Severus to come back and repair their relationship; he wouldn't. It had to be Harry who admitted the cock up he had made and claimed Snape. His nails dug into his hands as he warred with himself – he didn't want to be claimed, but Severus belonged to him, he didn't want to accept his Veela side, but he ached to be touched by Severus and stroke his wings... - the conflicting emotions were driving him mad.
Hermione's determined silence wasn't making anything any easier either, as she looked at him with such reproof in her gaze that he kept expecting her to nag him. She didn't, but waiting for the bitching to start was as unsettling as being bitched at.
Harry wandered the house, a top covering his wings, and he looked restlessly into room after room, refusing to acknowledge to himself that he was searching for Severus. A fruitless activity because he knew precisely where the older man was; he could feel it in his nerves. Flapping his wings in frustration he stopped and dropped to his knees by the side of his bed. Remembering the pleasure he had had in the bed he blushed, fingers combing through the tangled sheets searching for something that smelt of Severus. Finding Snape's scent he bent his head and sobbed.
Although she hadn't said anything, Hermione had thought of plenty, and she was keeping a quiet ear on Harry as he moved about the house. When he finally stopped shuffling about and thumped down, she walked quietly up the stairs and waited in the doorway to his room, hoping he would realise she was there before he began crying. But, no, he had seemed to be looking for something in the sheets and suddenly broken down.
“Harry?” she asked softly, no rebuke in her voice, simply worry and love for her friend.
“Hermione!” Harry wailed, “I've made such a cock up of everything!”
She hurried in and held him, letting him clutch at her and weep for his mistakes and his confusion. Holding a Veela, she soon discovered, was no easy task, as the wings got in the way, and, after learning the importance of them, she was very reluctant to even brush them accidentally. Harry sagged against her, no longer able to pretend he didn't want Severus.
After he had cried himself out, she shushed him and settled by his side. “Did you want to tell me?” she asked.
Harry sniffed. “It doesn't matter now. He rejected me.”
“Harry, you rejected him. He wanted you; you know that. And he was trying so hard to be patient with you, but you rejected him. Did you really think he was going to stay after you told him to get out of your life?”
He shrugged, his wings adding to the motion. “I don't get all this Veela stuff, Hermione. I just have this aching inside that makes me feel sick at the thought that I hurt him. But I'm human too, I'm not just Veela, and I don't want to be with anyone right now, and certainly not a man!”
Blushing, Hermione asked, “I – I know what you and Snape did was private, but did you get pleasure from it?”
Harry blushed as well. He didn't answer – he didn't need to – and said instead, “I'm not gay. I wanted to have sex with Ginny! How can I suddenly want this?!”
“You said you wanted to have sex with Ginny, not you want to have sex. Has your feeling changed?”
“That bastard Veela part of me wants Snape. And I can't seem to find the human side any more.” He twisted a sheet between his fingers. “I'm scared, 'Mione. What happens if I become all Veela and I can't find me any more? Ever again?”
Sighing, Hermione said, “You are Veela, Harry. It's not a new personality taking over; it's a part of you you never knew existed. Now I get that must be a big scary change, but Snape was willing to help you through it. He wanted me and Ron to help you too. Now you're going to have to do it without him and decide what you really want. What matters more – fighting the Veela side or being happy with who you truly are?”
“I don't have the strength to fight, not any more,” Harry moaned, “and I hate that I want him, but I can't just give in like that. That's what I'm having to fight all the time – myself. And I'm exhausted.”
“Then sleep. Tomorrow you can look at this whole situation having had some rest and having got some distance. Then you might know what to do about it.”
Shaking his head, Harry muttered, “I know what to do. I know what needs fixing; I just can't.”
Hermione pursed her lips, knowing that it wasn't that Harry couldn't, it was that he wouldn't. She realised that belonging to someone didn't necessarily mean giving up your own identity, it meant knowing yourself fully, and being inspired to be better because you wanted to be what the other person saw you to be. Gently she said all this to Harry and he whimpered.
“He said something similar. He said Bonding would make me stronger, make me, I guess, happier too.”
“Harry,” Hermione tried, she really did, to keep the rebuke out of her voice, “haven't you thought about Snape at all in this? Bonding isn't a one sided thing, it will make things better for both of you. Don't you want that? Don't you want him to be happy too?”
A fresh outbreak of weeping was her reply and she clutched him more closely, shushing his tears. “I've been such a selfish ass hole,” he wailed, “and I want to be with him. Right now.”
Harry began struggling free of her. Hermione wasn't sure this was such a good idea. Yes, she wanted Harry to realise what he was and who he wanted, but going to Snape in this emotional state would only lead to trouble in the end if he woke up after sleeping with the older man and changed his mind again.
“Why don't you give it a week?” she suggested. “We have a horcrux to find and destroy. Let's spend seven days on that, and then, if you still want him, then go. But be prepared to be honest with him Harry. And, I don't think he'll let you hold anything back either. It'll be a full commitment.”
Exhausted, Harry slumped and she had to help shove him into the bed. He nodded tiredly at her and yawned as he replied, “Okay, 'Mione, but no nagging 'til then, yeah? And tell Ron not to make any comments either.”
She nodded back and left him to sleep.
