Harry learned something interesting. Rebar was surprisingly resilient, and he wasn’t going to try anything loud that could draw the attention of the inferi outside.
Bombarda was completely out of any consideration. It was far too noisy and he wanted to make a hole, get the goods and get out without anyone the wiser.
Harry was going slow and steady as possible. Slicing through the layer of rebar.
He made it almost completely through the rebar. If worst came to worst and the inferi started breaking through the windows. Harry was just going to use the repairing charm to completely undo the damage he had inflicted upon the floor.
Harry gave silent thanks to whomever created the repairing charm. He was precise and he ended the spell just before it could slice through it.
Harry stilled for a moment. Patiently waiting for anything and when nothing happened. Harry cautiously reached towards the rebar nearly cut through.
He clasped his left hand around it nervously and tugged. A relived sigh when the bit of metal clinked off from his clean cut.
Harry repeated the process. Until all the rebar was clear, and he arranged the rebar bits into a neat pile.
“Defodio” Harry muttered and for a moment the concrete remained firm and unyielding and then it parted in manner quite like a flowering herb in his herbology classes.
Concrete was harder than stone but it couldn’t remain a hinderance to any capable wizard and then Harry was through the annoying concrete as the gouging spell tore right through material the ceiling of the gardening shop had with incredible ease.
There was a man-sized hole that led straight down to the gardening shop. Harry held wand at the ready for any movement.
They still had no idea what the inferi were capable of. If someone fell down the hole they were breaking bones and there was no sign of madam pomfrey.
Harry dearly hoped that wonderfully kind old matron was alright. She had saved him so many times Harry could not count.
Harry was however hopeful. As long as Hogwarts stood, she’d be there tending to whomever was in need without prying on how they were injured.
He felt a pang of homesickness. Hogwarts was home. The smell of rich earth was an delightful surprise. Harry had often helped Petunia with gardening, He pulled the weeds and trimmed the grass.
The smell of flora was comforting. There was, however, no way he was going down there. That close to the outside world filled with those true inferi.
Separated by mere glass. He saw enough horror flims on the telly to know exactly how that ended and Harry had no wish to die.
He was honest with Hermione, he had every intention of living for so long his grand kids wished he’d just keel over. Maybe, even live longer than Dumbledore had.
Harry walked the perimeter of his hole. He could see almost the entire garden shop from this vantage point.
“Accio Seeds!” Harry pointed at the racks of seed pouches helpfully labelled and of their own accord they flew up through the hole to land in his hand.
Harry tried not to think about those dead eyes staring through the glass but so far. The inferi didn’t seem to be able to sense magic.
Which was a fantastic advantage. Harry briskly used the summoning charms again and again and the various racks gave up their contents as the seed pouches picked up speed into a swarm of seed pouches.
Harry stopped after he had ransacked a few racks and he looked at his bounty as he sheathed his wand and he tried not to be dismayed.
More than half his pile were mere flowers. Beautiful to be sure but utterly useless for his idea about starting a garden.
But as he ditched the useless flowers off to the side. He couldn’t help but grin. He clutched his victory spoils.
Packets of carrots, potatoes, tomatoes. It wasn’t great but it was something!
Success. Harry grinned he couldn’t wait to show Hermione. His excavation however was just starting. It was a proof of concept.
“You aren’t going to leave the hole open are you?” Argus asked and Harry jumped. Argus was handsome but what startled Harry was the fact that Argus had managed to get so close to him that Harry could feel his body heat and Harry hadn’t even heard Argus move.
“Uh-“ Harry stammered for a moment.
“Not a chance, Until we have a better understanding of what those things are capable of. We cannot have a single access point to this floor.” Argus relaxed.
Harry hesitantly looked into those bewitching eyes.
“I’m not going to let anything happen to you. Or anyone here if I can help it.” Harry took a step back and procured his wand.
He waved it and pointed at the hole.
“Reparo!” Harry always marveled at the sheer beauty as the ruined bits of ceiling raced back towards the area the gouging spell had wrecked and affix themselves in the place they had been. The concrete he had to breached became firm and unyielding once more. His neatly piled bars of rebar flew of their own accord and reattached themselves before the concrete resumed repairing itself.
A truly magnificent piece of wizardy itself. The ability to undo one’s mistakes was beyond useful. If only more magic could do what the mending charm could.
The wonderous moment ended and the middle of the room was whole once more. As if it had never torn open.
Harry used a quick severing charm to mark the spot.
So next time would be easier. Harry didn’t want to nick a powerline or waterpipes or even a gas line. Those would be trouble even if he could repair it.
Electricity being all wonky around magic aside.
Harry scooped up his prize as he turned to open the knick knack shop. Argus’s strong arms enveloped him and Harry froze.
“I can’t sleep alone.” Argus whispered in his ear.
“You have a bunch of wizards and witches here.” Granted Harry knew Argus was probably into blokes. At least that was what Harry thought. Argus took him to the root of his dick with a fervent gusto that made him reasonably sure.
He could be wrong though.
“You are going to fine. I Promise Argus.” The man however didn’t let go. Argus was shivering and that was when he realized.
Aside from natural sunlight, not a single electrical light was on.
“We’re going to get through this you know that right Argus?”
“I don’t know.” Argus sounded afraid and unsure.
“But you do know.” Harry responded. The shadows looked threatening and monstrous but they were wizards. With a simple word capable of banishing the darkness.
“Lumos” The tip of his wand ignited and bathed them in its luminescent glow.
“See Argus? We’re wizards Argus, we can push back the darkness. All we need to do is remember how to turn on the light.”
Harry wasn’t going to lie, It was terrifying outside. The muggle world was ending, the dead were on the move and likely all manner of dark creatures.
Especially dementors were probably frenzying.
Which was why it was so important to foster the bonds between one another.
“I’ll tell you what Argus, you can put your tent in with mine. But, we all need our sleep.”
Argus released him.
“Okay.” The door made an odd squelching sound and the shutter raced across the rails and the door opened.
“Come on, Argus It’s time we rejoin the others.” Harry smiled
“Nox” His light extinguished, and he called upon a happy memory of Hogwarts.
“Expecto Patronum!” He said with a joyful flourish. A silvery white stag burst from his wand. A regal hart, proud and true as it stood sentinel.
Harry focused on the spell. The Order of the Phoenix could communicate with the Patronus spell. Perhaps, they could do the same. It was something to think about. A way to talk to the outside world that Voldermort and the death eaters could never hope to achieve.
Harry turned and he almost lost control of the spell before he focused on it.
For a moment… It looked like the shadows seemed to cling to Argus. Harry’s green eyes blinked but surely it had been a trick of light? The presence of the Patronus shown brilliantly and the mere shadows of knick knacks were as insubstantial as Lockheart’s prowess.
Harry giggled despite himself. Argus looked at him with awe and hurried towards the stag. His stag remained stoic and its ear’s twitched as it stood guard.
Harry turned back to see what his Patronus was on guard for but he saw nothing. There were no inferi here on this level.
They were safe. Harry looked at seed packets in his hand and his stag lead the way.
“Hermione! Hermione!” Harry called out. His bushy haired friend looked up from her parchments.
“The power’s out.” Harry commented. She gave him one of her looks that clearly brought his intelligence into question, but she smiled none the less.
“I noticed.” Hermione stated dryly. Harry placed the seed packets ontop of her stack of parchment.
“Harry, You’re brilliant.”
“Argus, and I managed to snatch some from the garden shop. It’s not much but it is a start. I was hoping whenever you have some free time that we go back there and really get everything we need to start a proper garden.”
His patronus’s glow washed over her.
“Harry Potter, You’ve got yourself a deal.”
His best mate beamed and he reveled in the glow of the patronus. It was a simple pleasure, but he had gotten Hermione to smile.
