Roark's eyes slipped closed as he thought about that afternoon, remembering how, once they had all left him alone to rest, he had felt the tears gather, begin to fall. For a few very short sectons, he had had a small baby growing within him.
His baby. RODOLPHUS' baby. Once everything they had told him had completely sunk in, the loss of that child he had not known he carried for so short a time, had struck him hard...had struck him to the core. He had not heard his door open, but as soon as his bed had dipped, arms slipping around him to draw him against him.
He had tensed, but then he had recognized who the presence was, and turned into his brothers arms, face buried in his neck, his tears falling faster. Harry's hand moved up and down his back as he murmured to him, trying to comfort him.
His head came up, eyes opening to look down into the busy Square once again. "Damn it, Rodolphus," he breathed, "where the hell are you? Why haven't you reported in. Why haven't you come to see me, or even CALLED to say when you return?" a pause, then, "Why have you left me to face this alone?"
: I have not left you, : came softly into his mind.
: It looks like you have from my end of things, : he returned with a shake of his head as his eyes narrowed on the Square below. : You are not here when I need you to be. Where are you? :
: Rory, baby, I have NOT left you. I'm not far, : then a feeling of amusement. "I am glad, though, that you haven't forgotten about me. :
An internal snort sounded as a smile began to curve his lips. : As if I COULD forget you. There were our confrontations when we first met. The instantaneous attraction. The sparks that flew between us every time I saw you following me. The fire of our desire, the passion between us when we DID finally come together. The instant linking, the bond that so shocked the hell out of us both. Especially given just how strong it was. :
Suddenly, the pain of his lover's abandonment hit him, nearly bringing him to his knees. : Roark...baby, I swear to you, I have NOT abandoned you. :
: No? It sure seems like you have. : he thought to the soft voice in his head, lifting his eyes to the tall Caprican Mountain Range behind the City, his thought very suddenly returning to the inquiry.

"Lieutenant Roark, are you pleased that Tom Riddle, the man who so viciously murdered your parents, so very nearly killed you and your brother, is dead? That Captain Ardyn, who threatened your lover, a Terminator, is dead. That the WIFE of said Terminator is also dead, leaving him free to be with you? Are you happy that said Terminator escaped?"
A sudden, very intense flare of fury that everyone in the room saw. Once again, however, they also watched as Roark controlled it, suppressed by sheer will as he looked at the smirking man. Bright silver eyes, ringed with fire focused on the man. He didn't say anything yet, just stared until the smirk wavered...then vanished altogether when he realized he wasn't going to get the reaction he had wanted.
Commander Jael, Roark thought as he continued to watch him, in his estimation, was just like many of the elder officers that he had encountered from the moment he had entered the Academy. Then, after he had graduated, he, and men like him kept demanding that he prove himself over and over. To prove that he could do the jobs that were demanded of a Colonial Warrior.
"Should I be, Commander Jael?" he asked with an arched brow. "Tom Riddle was a monster, Sir. A smuggler, a slaver, a drug manufacturer and seller, and finally, he was a murderer. Bellatrix Lestrange was, by all accounts, a crazy, vicious bitch who enjoyed torturing her targets before she killed them.
"As for Captain Ardyn? Ardyn was, Sir, a very fine warrior, and an excellent pilot, but he went wrong. We could sit here for days speculating the when, where, why, and how, and we still would not touch on what REALLY happened to him. Only Ardyn knew that answer, and were he alive for us to put those questions to him, he likely would not answer them to anyone's satisfaction. He was a traitor to the uniform he wore, and you, Sir, obviously did not read our reports if you believe otherwise.
"He murdered Major Kale, Commander Jael. He hired the assassins that killed our first team, hired the woman that murdered Tristyn, then he hired the Terminators that went after Logan and Kili. He THEN hired the Terminators to take out the second team sent to Aquaria.
"Bluntly put, Commander, he was intending to kill every single Durin that was on Aquaria, and just to make one thing very clear, Commander Jael? All those contracts that are out? Despite the fact that Ardyn is dead, they are all still active.
"He knew the proof of his crimes had been discovered by Tristyn, and immediately had him killed so he wouldn't, OR couldn't tell us. Of the three disks that were made, two by Lt. Tristyn, both of which have gone missing, one to be found in his house later by Counter-Intelligence Officers. That disk proved to be one of the disks that Tristyn had made," he raised a hand when he saw Commander Jael opening his mouth to interrupt him, "and before you DARE to even attempt to suggest planted there by me, I would ask that you remember I was in the Aquarian Life Center fighting for my life, and LOSING from what I was told when the said apartment was searched."
"The disk in question," came Admiral Roark's icy voice, "was found by Intelligence Team Samuel Gentry and William Weasley. The information that is on the disk is still being analyzed and verified."
"Then we have the second disk Tristyn made. IT has yet to be found." Roark's fire had been controlled as he spoke, and now regarded Jael with icy intent. "It was said to contain information of Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange. We now believe Trystyn discovered somehow that the two were undercover Counter-Intelligence Officers, which, it seems, you have forgotten.
"Which now leads us around to Rodolphus. Yes, Commander, I am glad that he escaped, though personally, I don't call it an escape, but a very strategic withdrawal, especially as the warehouse was about to be overrun by Warriors that did not know what we of Counter-Intelligence did."
"I was the one to order him, to order them both to go, with Severus backing up that order," Sebastien spoke up then, drawing everyone's eyes to him. "Hey, there was no sense in getting our two best undercover Officers killed. Lt. Colonel Aiden also ordered them to go."
"THAT Doctor-Colonel was not your call to make."
"ACTUALLY, Commander Jael, it was, and I will be MOST happy to explain it to you all over again if you continue to have a problem with it," Lt. Commander Dacian said in a caustic tone.
"ENOUGH, Commander Jael," came VERY unexpectedly from Admiral Malfoy, silencing the man from whatever he had been about to snarl at Dacian. "I think, Commander, that you have said quite enough." He turned his platinum blond head. "Lt. Roark, do you believe that Major Rodolphus will report in?"
"I do, Admiral Malfoy." He answered. Something, Roark thought as he looked up at him, had changed in him. He didn't know what it was, but the change was definitely there. "In fact, I have complete faith that once he has finished with whatever it is he is looking into, he will be in."
: Thank you, love. At least I know your faith in me isn't broken, even if your trust is, : came instantly into his mind, right along with a great deal of sadness, which startled him, though he didn't show it.
He didn't see several Durin heads turn, nor did he see their eyes sharpening, heads tilting just slightly as they caught a wisp of thought.
"They deserved to die, Lieutenant. Tom Riddle murdered your parents and very nearly succeeded in killing you and your brother."
"Yes, he did, and I won't deny...nor will I argue that point, Admiral Maxwell," Roark quipped, giving the man a smile. "I freely admit that I seriously thought about killing the man...killing all three of them more than once, especially when my temper would get the best of me. I am, Sir, only human, but thinking about killing them and actually DOING it, are two totally different things.
"It was not my job, nor was it my duty to administer justice no matter how much I may have wanted to. What WAS my job, and my duty was to investigate, and to stop him. I was to arrest him and bring him in for trial. It was not by my hand, nor by Rodolphus and Rabastan's hands that they should have died. Had things gone down differently in that warehouse, that is exactly what I would have done."
